An experimental band barely out of their teens, The Scenes are from Oulu, Northern Finland and are a band that represent something between art pop, hardcore punk and progressive rock. Although they themselves would describe their sound simply as ‘rock’, the oblique song structures, angular rhythms and contorted lyrics, combined with their powerful showmanship mastery makes for something altogether more special.

No strangers to the live circuit, in May 2014 The Scenes toured the UK earning a reputation for their lights-out mayhem live performances, playing festival slots at The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Live At Leeds and Dot to Dot, as well as supporting Bo Ningen on their club tour. Their sets are characterised by neurotic bursts - serene then suddenly lively to the point where it’s almost certain that something will break - be it equipment or bones.

After their debut album “Images Of Animals Crying In Public” in 2013, second album ‘Beige’ will come out in October, on the Sound of Finland imprint.

Girl Band announce summer tour

Tour announcement: Girl Band
Dates: 23 May - 22 June 2014
More information and updates: on official Facebook page

“Girl Band’s 2012 debut EP, France 98, could’ve passed for a product of Sub Pop circa 1988. The irascible (and all-dude) Irish foursome proved they were after something more than flannel hand-me-downs” - Pitchfork

“Rules in excelsis” - The Quietus

“Noise-pop genius” - Drowned In Sound

“This boyish quartet from Dublin deliver visceral, invigorating music with nods to Daft Punk and Nick Cave” – The Guardian

“Gnarly alternative to moon eyed psychadelia, chanelling the sick lurch of Nirvana and Mudhoney through Pissed Jeans’ cleverly gormless humour… Abrasive, unrestrained and exhilarating” – NME

“A simply thrilling, terrifically pulse-quickening noise. Feral yet accessible…an alert, succinct display of how to match urgently funky post-punk to no wave-style white noise” – Clash

“Girl Band blow minds when they take to the stage with their brand of amped-up post-punk. This is a special band.” – DIY

Still wet behind the ears and fresh from their uni exams, Girl Band will be spending their entire summer on the road this year. With dates across the breadth of the UK as well as a wealth of shows and festivals across Europe, including Primavera (on the Vice stage), the Irish foursome are quickly establishing themselves as live circuit stalwarts. And for good reason.

On stage they are a wall of noise. Disparate and desperate in equal measure. Their music is all sinew and wires, burgeoning excitement - in their heads as much for the dance floors as it is for punk dives. Their last London headline show attracted nearly 250 people to The Old Blue Last with one-in one-out before 8pm, while both of their shows at The Great Escape festival 2014 had crowds cramming in shoulder to shoulder to witness the feral noise.

They’ve had worldwide acclaim for their latest singles including 7” “Lawman” and the 25 second long Record Store Day sell out “The Cha Cha Cha”, not to mention their earlier releases including their longest player to date, the six track EP, France 98. Perhaps the most groundbreaking of all was their cover of Yorkshire techno artist, Blawan, and his “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage”, streamed exclusively via The Quietus.

They will be playing the following shows over the summer:

  • 23.05 – Life Festival, Mullingar (ie)
  • 28.05 - Ubu, Perpignan (fr)
  • 29.05 – Primavera, Barcelona (es)
  • 02.06 – Dog & Parrot, Newcastle
  • 03.06 – The Bell Jar, Sheffield
  • 04.06 – Bloc, Glasgow
  • 05.06 – Electric Circus, Edinburgh
  • 06.06 – Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds
  • 07.06 – The Prince Albert, Brighton
  • 09.06 – The Cookie Jar, Leicester
  • 10.06 – The Portland Arms, Cambridge
  • 11.06 – The Shacklewell Arms, London
  • 12.06 - L’Envers, Bordeaux (fr)
  • 13.06 - Charada, Madrid (es)
  • 14.06 - Whipporwill, Oviedo (es)
  • 15.06 - Ibu Hots, Vitoria-Gasteiz (es)
  • 17.06 - La Flèche d’or, Paris (fr)
  • 19.06 - OCCII, Amsterdam (nl)
  • 20.06 - Charlatan, Gent (be)
  • 21.06 - Best Kept Secret Festival, Hilvarenbeek (nl)
  • 22.06 - Ekko, Utrecht (nl)

Painted Palms announce European Tour

European tour announcement: Painted Palms
Dates: 17-30 April 2014

Amid continuing hype around recent album Forever, San Francisco’s Painted Palms are pleased to announce a European Tour this April.

Whether living four states away or four blocks away, Reese Donahue and Christopher Prudhomme have always found geography has no bounds against their psych electro pop output. The two cousins grew up together in Louisiana, but started making music over the Internet when one moved to San Francisco. The virtual exchange proved to be such a fruitful method (with their first EP Canopy being personally discovered by Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes and released with Secretly Canadian) that it spurred them to continue making music this way despite ending up living in the same city. And so, the songs that formed their debut full-length Forever (released February 2014 with Polyvinyl), came together as if the musicians were still separated by 2000 miles.

Tours with Of Montreal, Braids and STRFKR around their first EP showed testament to the duo’s spacious persona – affixing themselves behind computer screens clearly has no impact on their physical affinity. With many more shows under their belt since, their songwriting and performance abilities are so inherent and compatible with each other that they can cross seas and energetically emit their blissfully buoyant tracks to live audiences as effortlessly as clicking ‘send’.

Characterised by pop structures and memorable melodies, don’t be fooled into thinking Painted Palms are a wholly sunny band. Forever can get dark particularly in its lyrics, with much of the focus centered on how it feels to be caught between the external world and one’s own thoughts. And in that moment a hint of irony is apparent, for as much as the members of Painted Palms want to get out of their own heads, they’re awfully good at writing songs that will immediately get stuck in yours.

Painted Palms’ European run is as follows:

April 17 Stockholm, Sweden @ Debaser
April 19 Bristol, UK @ Louisiana
April 20 Manchester, UK @ Soup Kitchen
April 22 London, UK @ Old Blue Last
April 23 Paris, France @ Espace B
April 24 Brussels, Belgium @ Botanique Witloofbar
April 25 Luzern, Switzerland @ Sudpol
April 26-29 Germany TBC
April 30 Amsterdam, Netherlands @ Bitterzoet

Dearly Beloved announce UK & European dates

Tour announcement: UK & Europe tour from Dearly Beloved
Dates: April & May
Find out more on: official Dearly Beloved website

Toronto’s Dearly Beloved is a one-of-a-kind sweat-fest led by Rob Higgins, a Canadian bass masher and tambourine thrashing rock tigress, Niva Chow. The band has toured extensively and shared stages with Mike Watt, Juliette Lewis, Sloan, Franz Ferdinand, Airborne Toxic Event and My Chemical Romance, among others. Dearly Beloved’s monstrous bass-driven hooks, intense energy and vocal interplay have led to comparisons to The Pixies, X and The Ramones and their over-the-top live show is not to be missed.

Dearly Beloved have certainly learned the value of putting their collective nose to the grindstone during the two years since the band unleashed the striking stoner/shoegaze/psych/prog/Goth/punk/pop opus Hawk vs. Pigeon upon the world. That’s all Dearly Beloved has been doing: working. Then working a bit more, sliding in some more work on the way home and topping all that hard work off with a little extra hard work, just for good measure.

There were invitations to further tour Canada, then to travel overseas and show U.K. and European audiences the goods for the first time. All that playing, in turn, hardened Dearly Beloved into a battle-scarred, hell-raising rock ‘n’ machine non pareil and, arguably, a better band than it’s ever been. So, rather than pause for breath at the end of 18 months in the van like any sane band would do, Dearly Beloved decamped to the infamous Rancho de la Luna studio in Joshua Tree, Calif., to write and demo the follow-up to Hawk vs. Pigeon.

Enduro, out in June, is a bristlingly antisocial punk-metal juggernaut with an old school rock n’ roll soul that sounds as wild-eyed and breathless and half-mad as a record made at the end of nearly two years of roadwork should. Helping Dearly Beloved on their way to the take-no-prisoners brilliance of Enduro were Rancho de la Luna mainstays Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal) and Chris Goss (Sound City Players), figures familiar to any disciple of the “desert rock” scene that gave the world Kyuss, Masters of Reality and Queens of the Stone Age who both contributed guitar to the new record.

Although the album is now complete there’s still no rest for the Beloveds. The band hit the road again this Spring to revisit Europe with their new material.

Boho Dancer: London showcase

Boho

Live performance: Boho Dancer's London Showcase
Location: 229 the Venue - 229, Great Portland Street, London W1W 5PN
Date: Monday February 17th at 6pm
More information / music: on official band website

‘Boho Dancer's music is so sweet yet so sad… it's tempered by a childlike fragility that makes the songs sound like whimsical folk for fairy tales with a sinister undertow.’ – The Guardian

‘Bewitching Acid Folk with a deeply personal edge, their intertwining harmonies, their intricate song structures are matched to an unusual directness.’ – Clash

Danish trio Boho Dancer are pleased to announce a special one off show at London’s intimate 229 venue in February. This exclusive event will showcase the band’s already renowned delivery of sweetly melancholic folk-pop and gear audiences up for a special expanded reissue of their acclaimed album ‘Gemini’.

Despite the fact that they have a natural constituency, Boho Dancer’s live performance has the ability to emphatically stir even the most unlikely of audiences. As singer Ida Wenøe recalls, “We were playing a gig on a boat to Oslo recently, and this very macho guy, who we would never have thought would like us, cried through the whole show! I really like those experiences - It has to move us to be able to move others. What is amazing about music is that it has its own language, and it is this language that we use and embrace.” And they do so in the most enchanting way, utilising sophisticated instrumentation, quirky yet crisp percussion, beautiful cover renditions and the most emotive of harmonies, it’s certainly a show that will tug at the goosebumps in your skin.

Boho Dancer’s enchanting music, with their quirkily appealing vocals and captivating melodies, has gained them a considerable following in their native Denmark and is winning them fans across the rest of the world. The music is highly emotional yet accessible, and there are dark, almost gothic overtones, “a melancholic Nordic vibe”, as Ida puts it. Meanwhile, the singing is equally cute and cutting and the lyrics express a worldview that is childlike yet weary. Like fairytales for adults. Influenced by the classic songwriting of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake and by more contemporary exponents of folk-inflected pop such as Local Natives, Fleet Foxes and First Aid Kit, Boho Dancer also bring a certain indefinable Nordic quality to bear on their songwriting.

Their debut album, Gemini is a haunting delight, with songs about good friends and bad weather, love in general and the local landscape, that, even at their most delicate, have the power to haunt long after they’ve finished. Although this album met critical success across UK and European press the band have now decided to release the album in a bonus version containing 3 extra tracks that have previously been released as an EP in Denmark.

Videos

Boho Dancer are: Ida Wenøe (lead vocal, guitar), Símun Mohr (bass, vocal, guitar) and Asker Bjørk (drums, vocal, guitar).

Antun Opic announces London dates

"Antun Opic is the real songwriting-deal...a rare talent" - Music Radar

‘Songs peppered with wit, wisdom and a debut album of considerable charm...boldly ambitious, remarkably good and hugely enjoyable.’ – Folk Radio UK

“I don’t feel ‘home’ anywhere” says Antun Opic. With his dual origins from both Germany and Croatia, the singer-songwriter has always lets his sense of rootlessness feed into his work. Staying true to his adventurous soul he visits the UK in February, to soak in further inspiration while offering up his own to us.

The London showcases come after his debut ‘No Offense’ (on his own record label Antuned) intrigued the UK audience with a digital release last Summer. Opic's alternative blend of world music, blues, and pop made an impact, bringing the brightness and tranquillity of its hometown in the German countryside with skilfully accessed and adventurous styles from even further afield.

Antun’s solo project can encapsulate and transmit a panoply of different atmospheres, both acoustically and with amplification. On record, accompanied by his eponymous trio as well as guest musicians, he allows blaring brass and woodwind to meet swinging banjo, fiddly acoustic and deep bass, with unconventional vocal harmonies echoing in the background. His solo outing is no less beguiling though - sometimes his guitar romanticises in the style of Django Reinhardt, sometimes, it devotedly enthrals in the manner of Paco de Lucia. In some of his songs, Antun Opic includes passionate gypsy and fiery flamenco, only to recall Paul Simon's African borrowings in others.

Having toured restlessly throughout his ongoing youth with a range of characters as well as becoming a fixture in Munich’s music scene, Antun Opic has gained an intimate knowledge of performance. Despite his worl-reaching and varied influences he can ultimately deliver his adventurous artistry as a charming, effortless and sophisticated production, resulting in a live experience that is as soulful as it is jubilant.

The live sessions are also available to stream and purchase with iTunes:

Wampire announce UK & European Tour, London support to Unknown Mortal Orchestra and new single, 'Giants'

Tour / single announcement: Wampire to play UK and European tour dates in November
Single stream: available on Soundcloud here

Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps, the songwriting duo behind Wampire, first began to make a name for themselves in the same Portland, Oregon, scene that has produced Polyvinyl labelmates STRFKR as well as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It's a scene they get asked about a lot.

It makes sense, then, that Wampire came to Polyvinyl’s attention when the duo opened for STRFKR at a hometown Portland show and that UMO’s bassist Jacob Portrait produced Wampire’s debut full-length, Curiosity.

This debut album, released in May, was hotly received in both the US and the UK and saw the band make their first appearance on British soil, packing out The Shacklewell Arms and wowing an enthusiastic, sweltering crowd in the midst of summer.

The band will be back for their second headlining date in London, this time at The Lexington, and a support slot to their good friends Unknown Mortal Orchestra the day after at Electric Ballroom. They will also take in dates in Bristol, Brighton and Manchester before heading on to dates across the rest of Europe.

A new single, the propulsive, melodic Giants, will be released to coinicide with the tour.

Tour dates

You can view a full list of tour dates on the official Wampire website. The UK and European dates commence in November.

  • "Fervid, yet mesmeric..." Mojo ****
  • "Creepy, but in a good way..." The Guardian
  • Band To Watch - Stereogum
  • "Frantic, experimental, exploratory pop" Uncut

STRFKR announce their UK and European Tour

Tour announcement: STRFKR's UK & European Tour
Listen: on official site

Hot on the heels of the release of their acclaimed third album Miracle Mile, Portland OR-based STRFKR reveal a string of UK and European Nov / Dec tour dates. Spanning Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Spain, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland and the Czech Republic, they will also play 5 UK shows, to include London’s Hoxton Plaza.

STRFKR have always maintained a very close relationship with their fans, demonstrated again recently with a fan-led remix competition for While I’m Alive. Following a run of incredibly successful US festival dates, which included FYF and Summerset, this extensive Winter tour marks another opportunity for the band to connect in the best way possible with their dedicated fans across the pond; through the energetic live show.

Initially the brain child of songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Josh Hodges, it's hard to say exactly when STRFKR became as fully fledged as they are now. It could've been during one of the 100+ shows they played over the past two years - ecstatic sold-out dance parties that started in tiny, sweaty rooms before word of mouth spread and forced a move to larger (and even sweatier) venues. Vibrant crescendos, explosive drum beats, and layered synth melodies drive STRFKR’s theatrical live show, and with the band more confident and comfortable than ever before, now is the time to catch them on the road.

STRFKR play the following UK & European dates:

November:

  • Fri 1st - SWEDEN, Stockholm Debaser - Club Night
  • Sun 3rd - DENMARK, Copenhagen Pumphuset
  • Tue 5th – GERMANY, Muenster Gleiss 22

  • Fri 8th – SPAIN, Madrid Copernico
  • Sun 10th – FRANCE, Paris Point Ephemere

  • Tue 12th – LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg Rock Hal Café
  • Wed 13th – UK, London Hoxton Plaza

Dearly Beloved announce UK and Europe tour dates

UK & Europe Tour Announcement: Dearly Beloved
Listen: on official website

Originally released May 22, 2012 via eOne Music Canada, Hawk vs. Pigeon is the latest buzz bomb from bass masher Rob Higgins and fellow co-vocalist Niva Chow who, together, form Dearly Beloved. With UK and European tour dates lined up throughout September 2013, even more in November for continental Europe, Dearly Beloved knew it was time for Hawk vs. Pigeon to find a home for an overseas release. Aporia Records will be releasing a special redux of the album in the UK later this year.

Just this past May, we took our European tour aspirations and a ‘why not?’ approach to playing Indie Week Ireland and that trip led directly to working with AMA Music Agency in Dublin,” recalls Higgins. “As well, a plum opening slot at an all ages gig at Glasgow' best venue, the Classic Grand, that offered up some more gigs…that train kept rolling. Synchronicity, kismet, call it what you like but we've experienced it more than a few times these last 3 or 4 years.”

Hawk vs. Pigeon (Redux) features completely new album artwork, an inspired and fresh re-sequencing of the album and a previously un-released bonus collaboration called Never Tell The Truth with Patrick Pentland of Sloan.

"Releasing this revamped version of Hawk vs. Pigeon is like breathing a second life into the album," says Chow. "I'm excited to rock this next phase of Dearly Beloved."

Hawk vs. Pigeon was recorded in Joshua Tree, California at Rancho De La Luna and the band's Phoebe Street Studios and features a veritable who’s who of outstanding guest musician appearances: Dave Catching of Eagles Of Death Metal /Earthlings?, Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene, Mars Volta/M83 alumni Dave Elitch, Jeff Heisholt of The Trews and Care Failure of Die Mannequin.

“I have always championed Dearly Beloved and I am huge fan of their live show,” says Pentland. “Their songs are the perfect blend of the excitement of punk rock, the sing-a-long-ability of pop with a dash of muso/prog rock noodleing, thanks in large part to Higgins’ amazing bass skills. High powered riffs and melody lines that make me jealous.”

Tour dates

  • Sept 7: Southampton, UK @ Joiner’s
  • Sept 8: Bristol, UK @ 02 Academy 2
  • Sept 9: London, UK @ Barfly
  • Sept10: Manchester, UK @ Alter Ego

  • Sept 13: Edinburgh, SCO @ Liquid Rooms
  • Sept 16: Paris, FR @ Le Pop In

The album was produced by Jesse Gander at Hive Creative Labs and Japandroids and has been called "one of the year's most thrilling rock records" by Rolling Stone. International critics have unanimously agreed with that, as evidenced below by glowing reviews on Drowned in Sound and Stereogum. The album was shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Prize in Canada and received many album of the year plaudits including Rolling Stone Top 10 Albums of the Year. Plus Japandroids were crowned Band Of The Year by SPIN and House That Heaven Built was voted no 1 Song of 2012 by Paste.

Faustus: new album and tour from the award-winning supergroup

Faustus

Album release: Broken Down Gentlemen by Faustus
Release date: 11 March
Label: Navigator Records
Album tour: 11-27 April 2013 – including The Green Note, London
Listen: on official website

‘Frill-free folk music, superbly and tastefully performed . . . a folk essential’ **** Sunday Times
‘A considered album of exceptional class’ ***** Daily Telegraph

Nominated in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the Faustus triumvirate are three of the leading lights of English folk music of their generation: Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy, Whapweasel), Benji Kirkpatrick (Seth Lakeman Band, Bellowhead) and Paul Sartin (Bellowhead, Belshazzar’s Feast).

Specialising in powerful delivery, faultless harmonies, inspired arrangements and a sprinkling of some of the earthiest songs in the folk cannon, they are men on a mission to banish all that is anodyne and fey in the delivery of folk music. Their plethora of experience is brought together in a virtuosic display of musicianship and testosterone.

Faustus came together in 2006 as an evolution of the award-winning band Dr. Faustus.  They made an eponymous debut album in 2008, produced by Stu Hanna (also of Megson) and released by Navigator Records, which saw them nominated as the Best Group in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.  Subsequent touring saw them headlining at festivals, as well as playing sell-out concerts at arts centres and clubs.  Rooted deeply in the English tradition, in 2007 they received a 75th Anniversary Award from the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

The band members:

Benji: Scion of a noted folk dynasty, and very firmly rooted in the tradition, Benji Kirkpatrick is a key member of folk big band and BBC Award winners Bellowhead.  Member of the Seth Lakeman Band who shot to fame when 'Kitty Jay', featuring Benji, nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005, Benji has also performed with numerous other noted artists including Oysterband, John Jones and Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span), and has found time to release three acclaimed solo albums.

Saul: Saul Rose was a long time member of Waterson:Carthy, winning two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards with the album 'Broken Ground' and forming a duo with Eliza Carthy.  The double album Red Rice, of which Saul was an integral part of the 'Rice' half, was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1998.  More recently Saul has joined Whapweasel, played in Ruth Notman's and Jim Moray’s bands, and re-launched his own duo with hammered dulcimer player, Maclaine Colston. In demand not only as a touring band member, but also an incredibly popular session musician, he has played on numerous albums, including Jackie Oates's album Hyperboreans, Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy's album The Gift and the soundtrack for the film Morris - A Life With Bells On. He was nominated for the Musician of The Year award in the 2010 BBC Folk Awards and in 2011 took the part of Songman in the West End play War Horse.

Paul: Paul Sartin is also a member of Bellowhead, as well as BBC Folk Award-nominated duo Belshazzar’s Feast and is a BASC nominated composer. He is Director of the Andover Museum Loft Singers, consultant for the charity Live Music Now and is a composer of note with recent works including The Hartlepool Monkey for Streetwise Opera, Anthony and Cleopatra for the Central School of Speech and Drama, and ‘Changing Landscapes’ for Broadstairs Folk Week.

In Autumn 2012 Faustus returned to touring after a two year break to enthusiastic reviews while simultaneously putting the finishing touches to a brand new album, working once again with producer Stu Hanna.

March 2013 will see the release of the album Broken Down Gentlemen on Navigator Records followed by an album tour in April.  For full tour dates see the Faustus website.

More about the new record

After taking the bold step of recording his last album of new songs live, when it came to recording Electric, Thompson turned to Buddy Miller (Robert Plant’s Band Of Joy, Solomon Burke, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin) to produce, recording at Miller’s home studio in Nashville, TN. Miller who himself is renowned for his guitar skills recently told Rolling Stone: "I played along on the record, playing rhythm guitar for him, and I got a two-week guitar lesson while he camped out in my house." The record was recorded as an electric trio with Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome and bassist Taras Prodaniuk, who both sing background vocals. Jerome and Prodaniuk formed part of the band which recorded and toured the UK Top Twenty album Dream Attic, released in August 2010.

They make up the trio, with Thompson, on his forthcoming UK dates, his first extensive tour in two years.

Guests on Electric include the legendary Alison Krauss who joins Thompson on The Snow Goose, while English singer-songwriter Siobhan Maher Kennedy (formerly with River City People and now resident in Nashville) adds vocals on several tracks as well. Fiddle great Stuart Duncan also plays on the record; one of America’s leading bluegrass musicians he played on recent albums by Robert Plant/Alison Krauss and Elvis Costello and will be familiar in the UK from BBC4’s Transatlantic Sessions.

Richard Thompson himself commented that: “We did it ridiculously quickly. But it sounds great. It turned out surprisingly funky, sort of a new genre - folk-funk. It's quite snappy, somewhere between Judy Collins and Bootsy Collins.”

Electric will be released as a Standard CD, Deluxe two–disc set and on 180 gram vinyl.

About Richard Thompson

Recipient of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Mojo’s Les Paul Award and curator of the prestigious Meltdown Festival at the Southbank in 2010, Thompson was most recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by the Americana Music Association.

Electric was recorded earlier this year, marking the fortieth anniversary of Richard Thompson’s debut solo album, Henry The Human Fly. Thompson has now released some forty albums, played on countless other classic recordings, and written more than 400 songs, some of which have been covered by R.E.M., Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, The Futureheads, Bonnie Raitt, Dinosaur Jr., Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, and many more.

Rolling Stone has hailed him as “a perennial dark horse contender for the title of greatest living rock guitarist.” The Independent recently described him as “probably the best guitarist this country has produced, an utterly sui generis talent…”

Thompson says of his fellow trio members: “Michael Jerome has been with me for about 12 years. He’s actually from Texas; he is a great musician, able to respond to anything that’s put in front of him.  Taras Prodaniuk worked a lot with Dwight Yoakam, and more recently with Lucinda Williams. His roots may be in country music, but he’s another extremely gifted and versatile musician.”

James Iha announces intimate, semi-acoustic European dates

James Iha will return to Europe for a series of stripped back shows in December that will see him playing acoustic with backing from Steve Schiltz (Hurricane Bells, Longwave, Albert Hammond Jr.) on electric guitar. He’ll be performing a selection of material from his successful 1998 solo debut, Let It Come Down, from this year’s critically acclaimed and long-awaited follow-up, Look To The Sky and a few surprises from elsewhere too.

James Iha began his career as a co-founder of The Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago in 1987. He recorded and toured with the group until 2000, during which time they released ten albums and became one of the biggest bands of the era, selling tens of millions of albums and filling arenas worldwide. In addition to his guitar playing and singing, James was also a contributing songwriter to the band, co-writing some of their most loved songs, including Mayonnaise and Soma from Siamese Dream.

After his time with the Smashing Pumpkins, James co-founded a record label, Scratchie Records, as well as a NYC based recording studio, Stratosphere Sound, which he co-owns with Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger. In addition to his own compositions, James has produced songs for numerous artists including Michael Stipe, Cat Power, and two critically-acclaimed albums for Swedish band The Sounds, and has done remixes for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Ladytron. Other projects have included film scores for Japan’s Linda Linda Linda and the independent film Luck. In 2003, he joined the acclaimed progressive rock band A Perfect Circle, featuring members of Tool and Marilyn Manson, and he continues to tour with the band today.

Look To The Sky is James' first solo album in nearly 15 years, and features guests such as Karen O and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara, Nathan Larson of Shudder To Think and Television’s Tom Verlaine. It was released last month in the US and earlier this year in Japan. It will be released in the UK on November 5, through The End Records.

James will be performing on the following dates:

  • December 4th – London, UK – Bush Hall
  • December 5th – Paris, France – La Maroquinerie
  • December 6th – Amsterdam, Netherlands – Bitterzoet
  • December 8th – Lisbon, Portugal – Vodafone Mexefest

DVD / Blu-Ray release: The Beach Boys Live In Concert - 50th Anniversary Tour
Release date: November 19
Label: Universal

DVD features 21 live performances from the band's historic world tour and a bonus disc, The Beach Boys Doin' It Again. Blu-Ray edition features concert only.

"The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary tour meant so much to me personally; performing with the guys again was an absolute thrill. I'm so glad we captured it on film so that everyone, whether you were there or not, will be able to see what an historic event it was." - Brian Wilson

"The 50th Anniversary Tour was a historic, special event. This DVD captures the tour brilliantly and marks an important, iconic moment in time in our band's history. It's a moment I am deeply proud of." - Mike Love

For music fans raised on the harmonies and melodies that defined a generation, The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary was celebrated with an album featuring all new material and a special 75 date world tour.  The group played to sold out crowds garnering rave reviews at every stop — from the Hollywood Bowl to its conclusion at London’s Wembley Arena with an epic 55 song set. The excitement of the tour lives forever on DVD and Blu-Ray: The Beach Boys: Live in Concert - 50th Anniversary Tour.

Out November 19th, the DVD captures one of America’s most beloved and chart-topping band’s electrifying performances of 21 songs, including classics, album cuts and new songs, all of which highlight The Beach Boys' enduring impact on pop culture. For fans of all ages, this is the concert of a lifetime.

The new DVD comes hot on the heels of remarkably productive year for the group, which saw the release of their first new album in sixteen years, That's Why God Made The Radio (Capitol / Brother Records), and The Beach Boys: Doin' It Again which features live performances, behind-the-scenes exclusives from the 2012 recording sessions, as well as never-before-seen footage from the 1966 Good Vibrations recording sessions, and moving tributes to founding members Carl and Dennis Wilson. This also features as a bonus disc on the DVD release only.

Marc Bennett, co-director of  the film says: "To document this once-in-a-lifetime moment in music history as The Beach Boys embarked on their 50th year anniversary world tour was an experience I still have not come down from. This show is a solidification of their legacy and a tribute to creative endurance and artistic achievement that crosses all cultural and geographical boundaries. In spite of the obstacles they may have encountered over the years, they have reached this 50th year milestone as few bands have ever done, or even imagined. What they leave behind, as captured in this performance, is a body of work that is indelibly etched in music history and popular culture on a global level."

Joe Thomas, who also co-directs the film, says: "It was truly an honor to be allowed to capture this historic performance. The song selection allows fans both new and old a chance to fully appreciate the span and depth of the Beach Boys catalogue. This DVD includes performances from their hits in the early 60's to selections from their latest Top 3 Album. To be able to film all five surviving members of this historic band, together one more time...was certainly a dream come true..."

Suzy Bogguss - UK tour in May / June

"Suzy Bogguss is an artist of true beauty, sensitivity and integrity. 'The American Folk Songbook' gently weaves together a collection of traditional songs that have inspired this wonderful heritage project and Suzy's fantastic career."  – Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

Golden-throated Suzy Bogguss is back in the UK for an early summer tour of classic acoustic folk bliss. The platinum selling songstress can’t wait to get on stage saying:

“I've been coming over to the UK since 1989, and every year for the past 6 years. I have a love affair with the people. The fans are unique, they really get involved with artists they follow and I'm freaked out sometimes by how much they know about the songs! I've actually had some folks sing my songs to me when I couldn't remember the words! Last year I had a blast with Wine, Women and Song and we even played Glastonbury. This year I am touring with my acoustic trio. Can't wait to get back!”

Suzy first came to the UK for the Wembley Festival in 1989 and has been a frequent visitor ever since, notably with Gretchen Peters and Matraca Berg as "Wine, Women & Song". Songs like AcesDrive South and Letting Go amongst others took her to the top of the country music charts. Along the way she won raves from critics and peers including Terry Wogan who often playlists her songs on his radio show and had her join him on the ‘Wogan’ TV show. Bob Harris is also a huge fan, having her on his show many times. Suzy won a Grammy Award in 2005 for Traditional Folk Album, the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award in 1992 and album of the Year Award in 1994. She also hosted the CMA Awards live for the BBC with Paul Sexton in 2007.

With her shelf already full of Grammy and CMA awards she can now put her own book up there too with the release of American Folk Songbook. The CD and companion song book was created out of a revelation on stage with Garrison Keillor in 2008. Everyone loves to sing along on Red River Valley – except the children who somehow don't know the song. Folk songs are the scrapbook of the American experience, but as music education fades from US public schools, she worried: these beautiful melodies are in danger of being overlooked. She resolved to record these timeless songs in an updated but reverent way so that everyone could join in.

“We're playing a broad mix of material on the tour but I know we'll have fun with my current project, American Folk Songbook. The Brits are great with sing-alongs, and though we'll probably haggle over the lyrics we share a lot of music.”

Suzy says she modelled the pages after her "good old 5th grade songbook." The hardcover, 96-page book is filled with illustrations, fascinating historical stories about the songs, easy to read sheet music arrangements for piano, voice and guitar and as personal insights and anecdotes from Bogguss. It is an appreciation for tradition that really shines through on American Folk Songbook. The album is filled with songs that are the very fabric of American musical history and Bogguss reclaims this history and revives it with a fresh and beautiful take on classics like Shenandoah, Wayfaring Stranger, Ol’ Dan Tucker, Beautiful Dreamer and of course, Red River Valley" Everybody sing along!
