Melinda Ortner was born and raised in California, and for the past five years she’s been based in LA, cultivating a burgeoning music career. Her first single Heartbeats was originally written for the US movie I Hate Valentine’s Day. She also penned tracks for the Finnish movie Gone With The River – her track of the same name made it into Billboard Top 100 in Finland, while Heartbeats was instead chosen for the major film American Pie: Book of Love which really introduced Melinda to a vast audience. Since then it’s had more than 40,000 views on youtube, been aired on several US radio stations, was regularly featured on MTV2, Showtime, HBO, USA Network and Pay-Per-View. With commercial success came several key showcases (including SXSW), a live MTV pre-VMA’s performance, a spot on the acclaimed Balcony TV Sessions and extensive touring.

In 2012, Ortner released the elegantly dark 4 track Strangers EP in the UK and has since performed at Sundance Film Festival, PCTV Sundance Channel and embarked on a full band US West Coast Tour. In summer 2013, she will base herself in the UK and announce European tour dates through summer and fall.

2013 sees the release of her debut album proper, I Wanna Be OK. Her lyrics are refreshingly honest and forthcoming, and her songs are written with great care, with an eye for the details as well as larger picture. The album covers more than one resounding theme, the most important being this dream of Ortner’s – pursuing a music career and the fears surrounding it.

“While I am a huge advocate for chasing dreams, the pursuit of music as a career, can be very trying, very discouraging, and more than anything scary as hell. I would of course like to feel ok about it all. I'm a stubborn one, a risk-taker and when I want something, I tend to want it bad. I suppose the passion I hold for this thing, music, and all it entails, lends itself to that notion of heavy chasing, and inevitably, heavy falling. The higher up you are, the more it's gonna hurt coming down.”
