Wojtek Mazolewski releases new album Solo

Wojtek Mazolewski

Wojtek Mazolewski’s new album ‘Solo’, is a breathtaking and captivating musical journey. (…) ‘Solo’ is a masterclass in how a solo double bass album can be rich, cinematic, and deeply human. Essential listening. - UK Vibe, 5/5

Wojtek Mazolewski’s Solo is a wonderful album, packed with contrast and also melodies. The music relaxes, inspires, excites, and above all, engages the listener. The double bass is given a place as the storytelling instrument. Its narrative is spirited and warm, interacting with other sounds and weaving works that tell of depths, reflection and rich emotion. - Sammy Stein, author of The Wonder Of Jazz

Wojtek Mazolewski - internationally acclaimed bassist, composer, and leader of the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet - releases his new album Solo, a deeply personal, atmospheric, and cinematic exploration of the double bass and its expressive possibilities.

Known for his bold, genre-crossing vision, Mazolewski uses Solo to reveal a quieter and more introspective dimension of his artistry. Rather than approaching the project as an opportunity for virtuosic display, he offers a restrained, melodic, and profoundly human interpretation of the double bass, treating it as a storytelling instrument capable of tenderness, nuance, and emotional weight.

The album draws listeners into an immersive sound world that blends harp, flute, delicate percussion, electronics, and whispered vocal textures. Subtle yet richly expressive, the music opens a spacious environment for focus and reflection, avoiding the clichés often associated with ambient or meditative work. The compositions unfold gradually, revealing their layers and sonic detail with great sensitivity.

Solo was introduced by the intimate single ‘My Works Of Art’, a whispered, poetic piece set against ambient bass textures, followed by the hypnotic ‘Dark Ecology’, a minimalist track built around a dance-inflected groove and inspired by Timothy Morton’s writing on ecological interdependence. Together, these pieces offer an entry point into the album’s range and its unexpected shifts in mood and colour.

The album was co-produced by Wojtek Mazolewski and Wojtek Urbański (platinum producer and film composer) and mastered by Grammy-winner Ben Rawlins, resulting in a recording of exceptional clarity, warmth, and depth. Harpist Marysia Osu appears throughout the album, adding luminous, essential textures that have become a defining element of the record’s sound.

Mazolewski’s international profile continues to rise. His quintet’s album Polka was named one of DownBeat’s albums of the year; he has been a regular guest on Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio programmes, including a celebrated Brownswood Session; and this year’s WMQ release Live Spirit I earned widespread praise from Jazzwise, UK Vibe, Record Collector, All About Jazz, Jazz Forum, and others. Underscoring his growing cultural influence, Mazolewski appears on the cover of the debut issue of Polish GQ, a rare distinction for a jazz artist.

Following a series of solo and ensemble concerts across Poland, and recent appearances at the London Jazz Festival with the Tryp Tych Trio and as a special guest of Marysia Osu, Mazolewski now prepares to bring Solo to wider audiences. He returns to London on 11th February for a headline performance with WMQ at The Jazz Café.
