Wojtek Mazolewski announces new album Solo via WMQ Records and shares first single ‘My Works Of Art’
Wojtek Mazolewski by Jacek Domanski
The leader of the internationally acclaimed Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet reveals a more intimate and personal side in his new solo project, Solo - a chamber-like, cinematic, and deeply atmospheric record that showcases the double bass as both instrument and voice.
Where one might expect virtuosity, Mazolewski instead offers subtlety: his playing becomes storytelling, revealing the richness and depth of the instrument through sensitivity and space. Solo invites deep listening - modern in spirit yet timeless in feel, blending acoustic warmth with delicate electronics, harp, flute, and whispered vocals.
The album is introduced by its first single, ‘My Works Of Art’ - the only non-instrumental track on the record. A whispered poem shared by male and female voices unfolds over a gentle bass pulse and ambient textures, before giving way to a graceful, memorable melody. It’s an evocative entry point into the album’s world - an invitation to step inside Mazolewski’s inner landscape.
Produced by Wojtek Mazolewski and Wojtek Urbański (Polish platinum producer and film composer), and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Ben Rawlins, Solo captures sound with extraordinary clarity and depth. Episodic but essential contributions from harpist Marysia Osu further enrich its luminous textures.
Speaking on the album, Mazolewski says "Pharoah Sanders, Patti Smith, Coltrane, Rimbaud, Van Gogh, Jarmusch, and many others have been my greatest inspirations. I deeply admire the devotion these masters have shown to their art, and I continue to learn from them. Their works of art have shaped the path I seek to follow."
Mazolewski will present material from Solo with Marysia Osu as a guest during the London Jazz Festival in November. He also appears at the festival with his international ensemble Tryp Tych Trio, and will return to the London Jazz Café with the Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet in February.
A central figure in modern jazz, Mazolewski continues to build bridges between genres and audiences. His Quintet’s album Polka was among DownBeat’s favourite albums of the year, and his recent Live Spirit I received international acclaim from Jazzwise, UK Vibe, Record Collector, and All About Jazz. His projects, from the experimental Tryp Tych Trio to collaborations with artists such as Pete Wareham, Tomasz Stańko, Urszula Dudziak, John Zorn, Tim Berne, and Dennis González, highlight a restless creativity and a rare artistic range.
