Whitney release ‘Light Upon The Lake’ 10th Anniversary Edition featuring an unreleased demo, alt-versions & a cover

Chicago duo Whitney release Light Upon The Lake 10th Anniversary Edition, featuring a previously unreleased demo, alternate versions of much-loved album favourites and a cover from the sessions for their seminal debut album. Listen here. The album was released in 2016 to wide critical praise, with The Guardian calling it “a confident and effortless record that sounds as if it has always existed, blending shades of Americana and classic guitar pop into a russet-coloured, American pastoral whole,” and Pitchfork giving it the coveted “Best New Music” distinction calling it “warm, simple and profoundly enjoyable rock'n'roll record.”
The band’s Max Kakacek penned a personal essay about the album’s 10th year anniversary, which can be read here, with Julien Ehrlich adding “can’t believe I’m typing this but Light Upon The Lake came out 10 years ago. 10 years ago our community in Chicago was a beaming, nurturing, sometimes messy picture of young adulthood. Our friends provided couches and floors when we desperately needed them. Critical ears and valuable feedback when we were struggling to write throughout winter 2015. Encouragement (and residual panic) as we played our first few live shows around the city - and unwavering support as that live show eventually took us away for months at a time. It’s cliché but there was a chosen family that quite literally stepped in and kept us afloat and clearheaded throughout the journey of writing LUTL and I think that’s what I’m bound to remember another 10 or 20 years from now. Thank you to anyone and everyone whose lives have been touched by this record in the last decade. We’ll see you soon <3.”
To coincide with the anniversary, Whitney have released two new full-length videos with archival footage of the band. Following the release of the “Golden Days” (Official Alt Video), today they share the charming visual accompaniment to the alternate version of “Golden Days Fingerpicking Version”.
The album will also be released physically, with the original LP repackaged with an unreleased 10” and a deluxe 30-page booklet. The release will be limited to 500 copies of individually signed and numbered LPs. Pre-orders for the LP beginning on Fri June 12th for fans who are signed up via the band’s email and text list, with general pre-sale starting June 15th via whitneytheband.com.
