Select praise for "MVD LUV":
“catches the sense of wistful dislocation that comes with trying to go home again, the after-hours sidewalk café intimacy of ‘Manejando Por Pando’ or ‘Canciön Mamå’ suggesting quiet reckonings and reorientations. A field recording of its own.” – MOJO
“Wauters' latest is a love letter to that hometown and his first recorded there. It adds candombe, an Afro-Uruguayan form that leans on three tambores (drums) of different sizes, and the Montevidean carnival music known as murga, to guileless, guitar-and-keys indie pop with anecdotal lyrics sung in both English and Spanish.” - Uncut
"We love Juan Wauters, the transient Uruguayan who relocated to New York as a teenager, and who mixes the street sounds of both these environments into his sweet-toothed, earnest and funny Jonathan Richman-like songs. His great Real Life Situations album got us through lockdown and his newest, seventh album MVD Luv is another winner." - The New Cue
"folding in sounds of Uruguayan folk traditions and nodding to the lineage of experimental Uruguayan folk artists of the ’70s and ’80s. He’s impressively deft with these new ideas, drums and cymbals drifting into the mix like passing carnivals heard from a top-floor apartment." - Pitchfork
"charming" - The Financial Times
Late last month, Juan Wauters released his long-anticipated seventh studio album via Captured Tracks, MVD LUV, a love letter to his birthplace and hometown of Montevideo, Uruguay. The album explores the sounds of the city and the local genres of candombe and milongón. Today, he has shared the music video for ‘Mutuación,’ directed by JuamPi Bonino.
On ‘Mutuación,’ Juan Wauters reflects on the quiet tension of transformation–how personal growth can feel both natural and disorienting. Set against a gentle, meditative rhythm, the song explores what it means to adjust to a new version of oneself, while staying connected to the shared language of emotion and expression. It’s a moment of introspection that echoes MVD LUV’s broader themes of identity, artistic evolution, and the ongoing dialogue between past and present.
Speaking on the music video, Wauters says “JuamPi Bonino is a photographer/creator with a very strong personal aesthetic. I have known him for a long time and I have always admired his work and work ethic. He had made the video for my song ‘Locura‘ and every time he approaches me with an idea I give him the go ahead. This time around we both coincided in Montevideo (he lives in Spain). He told me he wanted to experiment with a new style he was working on and asked me if I had a song to make a music video to. The idea was to have me turn into new versions of me while going by interesting looking signage and wall paintings in Uruguay. I thought the song ‘Mutuación’ (Mutation meets Mutual) would be perfect for this. We went off and filmed a day in Florida, Uruguay and another day in El Cerro and La Teja: two classic working class neighborhoods in Montevideo.
He continues, “The outcome is what you see. I’m always happy to explore new ways of working and this is not an exception. Bonino has a very adventurous way of approaching his work and on this video our minds teamed up to make a video like a video I’ve never seen before, one of a kind type of work. Let humanity always push forward using the newest technologies around to explore our creativity and let humanity be open enough to understand new ways of working.”
The video for ‘Mutuación’ follows the masterfully directed music videos for ‘Dime Amiga,’ ‘If It’s Not Luv‘ and ‘Manejando por Pando,’ collectively conceived and created by Lucía Garibaldi, Fatos Marishta, Eric McLeland, Matthew Volz and Wauters, that form a three part video sequence, which you can view below.
Wauters also announced recently that he’ll be taking MVD LUV on the road for a fall tour across the United States. Full list of dates below and tickets available for purchase here.
