“…beautiful and insightful…Often, her songs end up revealing the strange and weird thoughts grief and transition can bring out of us, feeling all the more honest and real in its chaos.” - The FADER

Ada Lea -- the project of Montreal-based artist and musician Alexandra Levy -- today debuted her video for second single “mercury” alongside an interview with The FADER. Watch the Monserrat Muro-directed clip now HERE.

Saddle Creek’s newest signing, Ada Lea will release her debut album what we say in private on July 19, 2019, and the album is available for pre-order in multiple formats -- including a limited edition glow-in-the-dark vinyl exclusive to the Saddle Creek webstore -- HEREGorilla vs. Bear debuted first single “the party” last month and the song earned additional praise from outlets including The FADER, Brooklyn Vegan, and Paste, among others.

Following a run of U.S. dates last month supporting Angelo De Augustine, Ada Lea has announced North American tour dates in August. The tour begins the 1st in Toronto and includes a Brooklyn, NY show on the 2nd at Union Pool. She’ll also head overseas for the first time in November for a stop at the Mirrors Festival in London.

To Levy -- who is also a painter -- music and visual art are different vessels for communicating similar ideas. “It's a world that I can build around me and sit inside,” she says. Through all her art, Levy explores the concept of womanhood as it feels and looks to her, as well as love and how it transforms over time. She doesn’t shy away from exploring uncomfortable and painful emotions, either. With the brightness of love, strength, and hope contrasted with the darkness of loss, suffering, isolation, and abandonment, the Ada Lea album what we say in private is a varied and vivid record that constantly seems to shift in the light, bringing together all the intricate influences she’s collected over the years.

"what we say in private" began with a need to document the ending of an important romantic relationship. Following a tormented period of staying up all night (sometimes days at a time), frantically painting or writing songs as a means of coping, she journaled for 180 days in the hope of finding herself again. She conducted this period of analysis and introspection in private, like most of her creative pursuits, and the process eventually resulted in a rebirth: a rediscovery of self and a new sense of freedom and self-acceptance. These chaotic feelings and the resulting catharsis are deeply felt in the final recording of what we say in private. Levy wanted the album to feel like a journal entry from those 180 days as she cycled through emotions. Throughout, she expresses feelings and thoughts that all humans experience behind closed doors and alone, but are conditioned to keep to themselves.

"what we say in private" truly comes alive thanks to the way these recordings utilize the very real world around them, rather than shutting it all out. Expanding the boundaries of the studio, Levy, alongside the record’s producer Tim Gowdy, found new and nuanced ways of allowing the songs to flourish. “It was all part of a bigger idea,” she says. “We stuck microphones out of windows in mid-January to capture the chilly nighttime sounds. We recorded snow removal trucks backing into the lot and airplanes flying overhead. We used voice memos, a piece from here and another from there. I had built a room with the demos of my songs and Tim helped to add a second level.” As such, the album reverberates with human warmth, defined by the signature characteristics that can be found throughout -- as on “the party,” which fittingly comes wrapped up in static white noise, a soft atmosphere lingering in the distance and gently surrounding the stark instrumentation that is gradually introduced.

More information on FUR:

The band were formed after frontman Murray met original guitarist Harry in a Fresher’s internet forum before their respective University lectures began and the duo instantly began writing songs. "I was very aware that going to a place like Brighton would definitely allow you to do the band thing," explains the singer “So when me and Harry met each other we thought: let's get it started as soon as possible so we're not wasting time.

With bassist Tav and drummer Flynn soon completing the line-up, waste time they did not. Last autumn’s ‘If You Know That I’m Lonely’, is testament to that. Armed with a camera and a £100 budget, the group headed to woodland to shoot the video to the aforementioned single themselves.

Subsequently, and around 4 and a half million YouTube hits later, the band have landed support slots to the likes of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Matt Maltese and more; their listenership is fast-spreading with praise - and even fan art - coming in from all over the world. "I think the one thing we really appreciate is people telling us we have a fanbase in places we never expected”, noted Murray on this. “Indonesia has become a big thing, and when people in Peru say there are whole groups of people out there that love us, that's amazing.

It goes some way in showing the power of simply uploading a good song can have, even amongst the swathe of music constantly flooding the web. It pricked the ears of the likes of Steve Lamacq, an early supporter via his BBC 6 Music show, and Nice Swan Records; who released their debut EP earlier this week.

Despite being relatively early in their life as a band, FUR sound like a band already capable of crafting intelligent songs; penning a particularly nostalgic strain of guitar music but making it sound fresh again. Taking the age-old love song trope and reinvigorating it, theirs are tracks that feel familiar and classic but with a vibrancy that’s entirely new. “The three most written-about things are love, money and sex”, mentions Murray. “One I’m not that comfortable writing about, and I don’t have that much money, but everyone’s felt some feeling of love and there’s something powerful about that. It’s the strongest emotional connection I can have with a song.”

Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage share video for new single 'Hidden Things'

Praise for Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage

“Flawless” The Guardian

“Dreamy reveries, softly warm vocals, stirring guitar arrangements - Sanders & Savage wield an elusive sort of magic.” - Mojo

“A thing of beauty” - fRoots

“I’ve loved Hannah Sanders’ voice since the first listen and Ben Savage is a master musician." -  Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2 Folk Show

“When their voices blend there are echoes of Anne Briggs and Bert Jansch, Shirley Collins and Davy Graham and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings” Max Reinhardt, BBC Radio 3, Late Junction

****

Hidden Things is the first in a trilogy of singles by Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage. Here, in a new video for the song - premiered by Folk Radio, and shot by Rob Bridge from Redwood Music Photography - the duo highlight the beauty in the tiny details of landscapes, whether urban or rural.

Watch the video below.

After widely touring for the past few years 2019’s singles reflect the duo’s relationship to the spirit of place; all three songs were written and arranged in different counties whilst they were touring their critically acclaimed album Awake in 2018.

The first in this trilogy, Hidden Things, takes its inspiration from a time spent in northern Sweden. Hannah says “I was reading my friend Francesco Dimitri’s novel “Book of Hidden Things”. I was sitting on the coast of Stockholme’s Archipelago reading a novel set in Southern Italy and I was moved by the idea that landscapes hold dreams - love, mystery, loss… Dimitri’s book is about how stories become part of our connection to landscape. Like stories, songs can be a way of bringing the land’s dreams to life…”

The duo tour their intimate single-microphone show throughout the UK in April. Full dates below:

Huddled round a single microphone, singing intimate duets with just mountain dulcimer, dobro and guitar, Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are an acoustic duo that look & sound classically timeless, yet their music is unique.

Fleetingly, they may evoke a memory of Gram & Emmylou, Shirley & Davey, or Gillian & Dave but their distilling of musical influences from both sides of the Atlantic produces a refined sound that is decidedly their own.

Their unique unplugged presentation creates a widescreen, cinematic soundscape with open spaces and atmosphere, giving their beautifully pure vocals room to share the songs’ emotion and narrative.

The material is as joyful and fun as it is intense, but the common factor is the duo’s warmth and confidence in each other; their natural ease and connection is clearly evident on the recorded music, and a genuine pleasure to witness on stage.

Creedence Clearwater Revival 50th anniversary video release

CCRvideostills20181.jpg

Video release: 'Fortunate Son' by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Release date: Out now
Label: Craft Recordings
More info: Band Facebook

Craft Recordings proudly announces the 50th anniversary of America’s greatest rock band, Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was in the summertime half a century ago that CCR, a group that would reach sky-high success while retaining a resolutely rootsy, earthbound sound, released their debut album. This marked the beginning of an incredible legacy that was formed over just four years of unbridled creative output (1968-1972).

CCR's canon has become a staple in the Great American Songbook. Songs like 'Bad Moon Rising', 'Down on the Corner', 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain', 'Proud Mary', and 'Up Around the Bend' have been ingrained into the pop-cultural consciousness—not just as classic rock staples, but as American standards.

As the United States speeds towards another anniversary of its own on 4th July, Craft is kicking off the CCR50 campaign by releasing an official music video (the first ever) for one of the band’s most enduring classics, 'Fortunate Son', a song as vital now as ever.

Beyond its anti-war sentiment, 'Fortunate Son' is an anthem for the 99%ers, condensing a critique of elitism and class privilege into three simple, but powerfully defiant words: It Ain’t Me. Craft partnered with director Ben Fee (Band of Horses, The War on Drugs, The Lumineers, Aesop Rock) to give a whole new generation a visual entry point into the world of Creedence.

The song already has an undeniable place in history as one of the most visceral, attention-grabbing protest tunes of the Vietnam era. With the new video, Fee extends the reach of 'Fortunate Son' even further. "For me, protest right now is just showing pure positivity in the face of division and anger." Says Fee, “I wanted to highlight the community and positivity that everybody shares…I wanted to show what America feels like when you actually hit the road and drive throughout the states."

Though the Vietnam war is decades away in the rearview mirror, the people CCR were speaking for in the song are still the heart and soul of America, and they're still the underdog, facing a whole new set of challenges. So, Fee turned the video into a celebration of their indomitable spirit, giving viewers a glimpse of the broad array of characters comprising the patchwork that is our country at its core.

In spotlighting the diversity and unconquerable spirit of America's so-called 99%, Fee created a concept as relevant to today's world as it is to the original 1969 setting of "Fortunate Son." "I met so many beautiful people," says Fee of the folks he shot for the video. "I went to the Taos Pueblo people, into their land, and met with the war chief, and they were very big fans of CCR. They were so welcoming because they knew the song and the band, and they really loved the idea of protest through positivity."

Click here to watch the video.

Fee’s video road trip took him across the country, from Los Angeles to Miami and all points in between. The footage captures people across America of diverse ages, cultures, ethnic backgrounds and locations (including Florida, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, California, Washington and Hawaii) to document the true spirit that makes up the fabric of the United States, for which CCR have been the soundtrack for 50 years.

In addition to the video, the half-century celebration will continue in the coming months to fill out the CCR story even further. Craft will be honouring the band’s musical legacy via a diverse array of media, products and events; including a special release coming this autumn. The fête will also provide fans with new ways to engage with CCR online–sharing their memories, streaming new content, and diving deeper into the band’s legendary history. Stay tuned to CCR50.com for more details, coming soon.

In the meantime, you can dig in to more from the Creedence Clearwater Revival catalogue (and build your 4th July playlists) via Apple Music (click here for the Essentials) or Spotify (click here for This Is).

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1968 self-titled debut album introduced the world to guitar-playing brothers John and Tom Fogerty, drummer Doug Clifford, and bassist Stu Cook, four young men out of El Cerrito in the San Francisco Bay Area. Though they emerged in a place and time where trippy psychedelic visions were the order of the day, CCR bucked the trends and instead tapped into a rich, traditional seam of American music that connected to blues, country, rockabilly, gospel, folk and R&B.

While their contemporaries were unfurling mind-bending musical excursions with elaborate productions, Creedence crashed into the upper rungs of the album and singles charts with songs that wasted nary a note or word, overflowing with raw soul and unbridled energy. Although the band members were only together for four years under the Creedence Clearwater Revival appellation, they managed to accomplish more than many artists do in their entire career – they released 14 Top 10 hits, six Platinum albums, and one Gold in just four intensely prolific years, all powered by John Fogerty's gut-level growl, with Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford providing just the right kind of gritty, in-the-pocket punch to propel CCR's vision.

The band's West Coast origins notwithstanding, Fogerty's voice contained echoes of everything from the Chicago blues bite of Howlin' Wolf to the Alabama twang of Hank Williams and the Memphis swagger of Elvis Presley, creating an archetypal example of Americana decades before anybody ever thought of using that term to define a musical genre.

For all the indelible guitar hooks and commanding vocals the CCR catalogue contains, their songs are more than catchy tunes. CCR was a people's band in more ways than one; hand in hand with the accessibility that made their music relatable to just about everybody, there was a strong sense of identification with America's common folks, the ones whose stories were told in the songs.

On tunes like 'Born on the Bayou' and 'Green River', Creedence harnessed the sonic hoodoo of almost dangerously deep, “swamp rock” grooves to propel vivid New Orleans imagery. 'Long As I Can See the Light' floats luminously with the kind of sanctified soul feel that we've come to expect only from the South. And the spry country two-step of 'Lookin' Out My Back Door' finds its feet in Nashville, at least in a spiritual sense. While CCR's signature song, "Proud Mary," is a Southern-soaked riverboat travelogue, with stops in Memphis and the Crescent City.

Even some of the covers of Creedence's tunes have become part of history—Ike & Tina Turner's sped-up, R&B-slathered 1971 recording of 'Proud Mary' almost rivaled the original in popularity. And an astonishing array of artists, from Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to R.E.M. and the Ramones, have recorded 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain', to home in on the reach of just one of their profusely covered songs.

The group also performed a historic headlining set at Woodstock, and toured the world before disbanding in 1972. CCR's music endures today – still in popular rotation on the radio, and heard regularly in films and TV shows. Having sold over 30 million albums in the U.S. alone, Creedence received a rare Diamond certification from the RIAA in 2016, marking 10 million units in sales for their 1976 compilation album, Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits.

The appeal of Creedence Clearwater Revival isn't tied to any one era or milieu; whether it's 50 years ago or 100 years from now, all you need is a pair of ears to pick up on their sound. As John Fogerty once sang on a certain 1969 hit single, "Over on the corner there's a happy noise/People come from all around to watch the magic boys."

Diet Cig video premiere 'Maid Of The Mist' on DIY

Diet-Cig.jpg

Video premiere: 'Maid Of The Mist' by Diet Cig
Release date: Out now
More info: Band website

A few dates into their biggest European tour yet, NYC's Diet Cig today release the occult-friendly new video for 'Maid Of The Mist', a video DIY have called "frankly amazing" in their premiere. The video's director, Emily Dubin, goes into more details here:

“My goal with the 'Maid of the Mist' video was to take the stereotype of the “emotional girl” and lean into it as hard as possible. Often times, women who exhibit any sort of emotional reaction to anything are labelled over-sensitive and are told to essentially “get over it.” We're rarely given control, and when we do exercise control, we’re labelled as domineering or a bitch.

The idea that a group of witches set up this whole ritual and do this extravagant spell just so they can make sure to kiss the boy they want during spin the bottle is meant to be a melodramatic reflection of the way men perceive women: always extra, always emotional, always plotting.

However, I think our fondness for and practice of emotional intelligence in a general sense is one of the strongest assets that women can have; what better way to embody power, sensitivity, emotion, and connection to the universe than a bad ass group of witches?

I also need to give an enormous shout out to our Director of Photography, John Komar, who has been an inspiration to me for a while and was an absolute dream to work on this with.”

The band are currently touring alongside Scottish indie-poppers The Spook School and recently added a second London date at The Moth Club after the first sold out. Watch 'Maid Of The Mist' here.

'Swear I'm Good At This' was released this Spring via Frenchkiss Records to world-wide critical acclaim. It is the follow up to the infectious, 2015 'Over Easy' EP - recently reissued, and almost immediately selling out, on "egg" shaped vinyl - that introduced the world to the band's consistent sing-a-long lyrics with thrashing drums and strums that never held back. Swear I'm Good At This accumulates Diet Cig's tenacity for crafting life-affirming, relateable tales with a gutsy heart at their core. Luciano has the ability to write lyrics that are both vulnerable and direct, perfecting a storm of emotive reflection that creates a vision of a sweaty, pumped-up room screaming these lines in unison.

Diet Cig make it okay to be the hot mess that you are. The LP was produced, engineered and mixed by Christopher Daly at Salvation Recording Co. in New Paltz, NY with additional recording at Atomic Sound in New York City.

Pale Honey premiere video for new single and announce new album

PaleHoney-Pressshot2017web.jpg

Video release: 'Get These Things Out Of My Head' by Pale Honey
Release date: Out now
More info: Band website

Pale Honey premiere video for new single "Get These Things Out Of My Head" and announce Old Blue Last show for 7 November 2017. Watch the video at Dork and listen to the single on SoundCloud.

“The single manifests our way of tackling hardships and troubling times; sometimes you write a song to deal with something rough and sometimes it’s a way of explaining something hard to talk about. It went under the working name of ‘Heavy’ – a good start to tackle what would become a song centred around OCD. We love the drive in the song that makes a perfect base for the desperate shrill of Tuva’s singing and hope that someone out there will enjoy it too and find comfort or support by it.” - Pale Honey

Two years have passed since Gothenburg-based band Pale Honey (Tuva Lodmark and Nelly Daltrey) released their critically acclaimed, self titled debut album. This year the band will release their second full length album 'Devotion', a record of real honest and maturity.

It is no doubt that 'Devotion' was named thematically. Written and recorded together with producer Anders Lagerfors at the legendary Nacksving Studios in Gothenburg, the album offers a snapshot into the changing shape of Pale Honey. Though their sound may be maturing and growing more ambitious, for this album they returned to the process that served them so well as songwriters while they penned their debut. They say the number one motivation was to stay curious about music and try new things; “We didn’t record our debut album knowing what we were doing - we were new to our instruments at that time, and so writing for Devotion was a bit like that. We’ve recorded ideas on instruments we don’t usually play.”

The band have also sought to make 'Devotion' more of a curated experience to its predecessor; “Our debut album included songs that we wrote as teenagers and settled for anything that sounded good. For Devotion, we became extremely picky and left out a lot of songs that are good, but just didn’t fit in together or didn’t feel good enough. It has taken it’s time, two years of touring and writing but we’ve also had some time apart to be able to let ideas come in more environments than in the rehearsal room or studio. As we have pushed ourselves, we have become more confident in what we’re doing and what we like and don’t regarding our music.”

What shines through about 'Devotion', thematically, is its dealing with relationships on their many different levels, all the way down to the relationship with one’s self. In this way they’ve said the album has been quite therapeutic, and nowhere else on the album is this clearer than on the single track 'Get These Things Out of My Head'. Amongst a swath of distorted guitars and menacing synths are lyrics that deal with singer / guitarist Tuva Lodmark’s Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, something she has suffered with since her teenage years; “For me, this is very personal to talk about. I even wanted to change the lyrics for the song to be about something else before we recorded the vocals, I was so afraid of what other people would know about me. But after I gave it some thought, why would I censor myself that way? We make music because it’s true. We write to deal with ourselves and things that happen around us. This condition I’ve been in is a big part of me and I want to be true to myself and shed some light on the disease. It’s more common than people think.”

Over ten tracks, 'Devotion' proves itself to be a deeply personal album to really get lost in.

Press reaction to date

“Youth is a nervy bolt of Rock & Roll.” – Stereogum

“packed with refined, and barely controlled, fury.” - The Line of Best Fit

“Sparse yet emphatic, there are shades of early PJ Harvey or Sleater-Kinney in the directness of the songwriting. Capable of shifting intensity within a few seconds, Pale Honey have a remarkable sense of control for such a fresh group.” – Clash

“The Gothenburg duo of Tuva Lodmark and Nelly Daltrey make brutally minimal rock that’s prone to the odd fit of rage.” – DIY

“The LP effortlessly tosses out just the right amount of sonic twists and turns” – Consequence of Sound

“Pale Honey remain coolly poised throughout the three-minutes of their latest single, in which fans of PJ Harvey and Sleater-Kinney will find a lot to love.” – Q

"An intense three minutes riddled with angst and frustration" - Dork

Oslo duo Apothek release new video for 'Family'

Video release: ‘Family by’ Apothek (released via DIY)
Release date: 14 May 2014
Watch: on Youtube

‘If the cooks in Breaking Bad conjured up music while busying themselves with the money-making meth, they’d probably make something like this.’ - DIY

“A wonderful example of excellent pop songwriting mixed with electronic sounds and a classical vibe. What is truly exciting is the schizophrenic way band treats the track’s beat causing wonderful little heart attacks with its sudden, unpredictable nature.” - The 405

“Combines the two artists’ musical backgrounds to somewhat stunning effect. A slow burning, euphoric little ditty which paces along at perfect head nodding speed, getting into your ears and latching on like a musical leech” - Ja Ja Ja

Apothek’s music is often described as cinematic; a word that doesn’t mean much in isolation, but one which given context can be annoyingly accurate. Other than describing the concrete musical elements it also says something about the span or depth of the music.

It embodies nostalgia and being part of a tradition. So, even if the sound of “Family” is one that could only exist today, it’s nevertheless easy to look behind the chopped rhythms and discover the classic and surprising songwriting that would feel familiar regardless of the instrumentation.

It’s timeless, and exactly the type of song that doesn’t need the context of the current day to be enjoyed.  As a band, Apothek is absolutely a child of its time, but one with parents, great grandparents, siblings and cousins. Or “Family”, to be more precise.

‘Family’ is Out Now, available to buy digitally. Remix/Acoustic package to follow.

David Bronson releases comic book inspired video for ‘One Simple Myth’

Video release: One Simple Myth by David Bronson
Watch on: Vimeo

"Letting your mind drift, allowing your thoughts to float into unexpected directions...That’s the effect David Bronson has. ‘Incompetent Assassin’ is blissfully downplayed, with a near Elliot Smith use of twisted silence."- Clash

‘What stands is a decent recording from a reflective soul, one who’s purging his innermost feelings for all to see.’ - 7/10 Drowned in Sound

‘There are dreamlike qualities to several songs and, even without the aid of hallucinogenic substances, you can join David in a world of poetry, imagery and unrequited love.’ - No Depression

‘If you like well-produced, catchy, decent guitar playing and solid vocals then you’ll like this. It’s clear that he takes what he does very seriously and puts a lot of thought into things.’ – Gold Flake Paint

NYC singer-songwriter, David Bronson has unveiled his latest video for the track ‘One Simple Myth’ from his latest album, ‘The Long Lost’.

The visual landscape takes viewers on Bronson’s personal journey of refusal to accept the world as it is. The story interlinks animation with life as a comic book to a drab and dreary reality. The story unfolds with intercut scenes of a comic book and swirls around, matching the hypnotic production of One Simple Myth.

Directed by David and his brother, Jeremy, One Simple Myth is compiled of footage from during David’s studies when working towards his MFA thesis. The musician says it reflects the winding disposition of his ‘The Long Lost Story’ project, which comprises of two albums, ‘Story’ and ‘The Long Lost’ which features 22 sonically profound tracks that portrays the artist’s creativity and continuing perseverance for making his ideas come to life.

Bronson says: “There’s a lot of stubbornness in The Long Lost Story; a lot of refusal to accept the world as it had presented itself to me. It had something to do with being in a state of disbelief and that my particular version of idealism and youthful optimism was so vast that I was unable to cope with the reality of my circumstance. As cliché as it might sound, I was probably just having a very hard time “growing up” and was clinging desperately to the version of existence I had mapped out inside myself/”

The video can be viewed below or on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/84141966

David Bronson - One Simple Myth (Official) from David Bronson on Vimeo.

Bronson will embark on a tour of the Midwest and Northeast of the States in March. Dates include Chicago, Indiana and Ohio before concluding on the east coast at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall. Further dates in April are to be confirmed.

A third album is in the works and is slated for release later in the year. The future project promises to portray even more of Bronson’s intriguing creativity and musicianship.

An 8-bit history of the world - fantastic new video from Will Varley

Video Release: 'Weddings and Wars' by Will Varley
Release date: out now (single out 3 February 2013)
Watch: on Youtube

Acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Will Varley has released something you might not necessarily associate with folk music: a computer-game style music video that shows the history of the world and man’s evolution using 8-bit graphics – and in only four minutes. The video, which has already clocked up thousands of views, accompanies his song ‘Weddings and Wars’, a track from his recently released ‘As the Crow Flies’ album (Smugglers Records).

The video was designed and animated by Varley himself – it took about six weeks of solid work and involved lots of all-night sessions. Designed in a demo version of a 1990s computer program, Will finished the game on the last day of his free trial of the software. The video is influenced heavily by the kind of games Varley played with his brother as a child, and gamers will appreciate quite a few hidden in-jokes (look out for the Commander Keen reference, for example).

Super Nintendo gaming enthusiasts will love this video, which uses the same resolution and colour palette of the classic NES and SNES consoles; those interested in evolutionary biology will enjoy the simple and darkly funny explanation of how humankind has progressed from bacterium to killing machine; but above all, music fans will love the track: a witty, melodic and extraordinarily well-crafted take on the meaning – or meaninglessness – of life.

Label: Casino Gravity (www.casinogravity.com)
Video release date: 4 November 2013
Album Release Date: 15th November 2013

Previous projects

Jeff Martin is a founding member of Irish band Halfset, who have released two albums to date, the acclaimed debut Dramanalog and Another Way of Being There – the latter being The Irish Independent's 'Irish Album of the Year' and a Choice Music Prize nominee (The Choice Music Prize is the Irish equivalent of The Mercuries).

Jeff Martin has also released three solo records under his own name, Still, Spoons and Spoons Remixes/Collaborations. The remix album saw musicians rework their chosen tracks, contributors include David Pajo (Slint, PapaM), Mice Parade, The High Llamas, John Parish (PJ Harvey) & Minotaur Shock. This release gained Jeff US distribution. To date Jeff Martin has opened up for Lambchop, Tortoise, The National, David Grubbs and The High Llamas to name a few.

Jeff Martin has also played live guitar for acclaimed Irish songwriter Adrian Crowley as part of his touring band.

Ghost Maps

The Ocean From The River is Jeff Martin's first release under the Ghost Maps name. The 13 track album was written and arranged by Jeff Martin over a 12 month period, and was recorded in Dublin and Chicago. The Ocean From The River features long-time collaborator John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake) on drums and a guest piano appearance from Tony Crow (Lambchop).

The emphasis is on real instrumentation, with virtually no electronics, sequencing or programming. The result is rich and organic tones throughout the album. Intimate guitar and voice songs contrast with panoramic full-band tracks, occasional brass flourishes and textured string arrangements.

Drawn from various musical genres, The Ocean From The River is a diverse piece of work - complex, multifaceted, and one that reveals a new layer with each listen.

You can watch the video for the track 'Vanilla' on Youtube - where you’ll also find the embed code.

Jane Badler reveals video for new single Nursery Rhyme

New Video: Nursery Rhyme by Jane Badler
Watch: on Youtube

This November, singer, songwriter, actress and cult figure Jane Badler reveals a brand new video for her stirring, brooding single 'Nursery Rhyme'. Intended to be what she refers to as an ‘art project’ in the lead up to her next official album release, slated for early 2014, Nursery Rhyme is an intoxicating slice of neo-gothic balladry, with Badler’s sultry and powerful vocals really coming to the fore.

Written by Jane, working alongside Australian composer /pianist /producer Paul Grabowsky, and with direction from Wilk, Badler and band present a musical exploration of seduction, raw emotion and danger that so often compliments a life lived in seediness and multiplicity.

Talking of the video, Jane says: "Nursery Rhyme is about fantasy and betrayal. It is about the choices we make when we are deeply hurt by another. The abandoned house the metaphor for a place that was filled with laughter and love now empty and abandoned. The nursery rhyme in the song is the metaphor for loss of innocence."

Jane's Addiction: Live in NYC - album / DVD out 8 July

Album /DVD  release: Jane’s Addiction: Live In NYC
Release date: 8 July 2013
Label: Capitol / UMC

From the beginning, Jane's Addiction have thrown the most unique parties in rock, mixing a fierce musicality with theatrical flair onstage. 2012 saw the band — who’ve always outrageously combined electricity, sex and danger — return to the stage in support of their acclaimed album The Great Escape Artist (Capitol Records).

Live in NYC was filmed in New York City at Terminal 5 on December 29th, 2012 during a special run of North American shows—called “Theatre of the Escapists”- with the band performing in intimate venues, most of which are classic theatres. The alternative rock pioneers — frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass — captured this immersive theatrical experience on tape and are making available via Live in NYC on multiple formats.

“We chose to play as many of the great theatres that we could find because we wanted to immerse the audience in a unique experience unlike any they have ever seen at a rock show,” said FARRELL in the band’s tour announcement.  “Expect an orgy of musical and visual delights. We like orgies, and hope you do too.”

The album will be released on the following formats: Digital, DVD and Blu-ray (running time 69 mins),  DVD & CD, CD – both with 12 page booklets and sticker and also double vinyl LP – which is the first live vinyl release since 1987's self-titled on Triple X Records.

Lost Souls: new single / video 'Black Eyes' out on January 21

Single / video releaseBlack Eyes by Lost Souls
Listen / watch: on Youtube

“Their sound is unique in the true sense of the word. Fusing a traditional Brit-rock sound with elements of electronica to create a sound no one has heard on a national scale.” — BBC Introducing

Lost Souls, an electro-rock'n'roll 5 piece from Lincoln, are releasing a ruthless new track, Black Eyes, with an honourably rebellious art core video to match.

"Our videos are important to us, being descriptive of our songs but always in a way that's subjective to the listener/viewer. Do we know too much or nowhere near enough? Black Eyes puts the question to you pointing out some observational references that may seem pro conspiracy? Or could they just be word interplay?

"We tend to pitch our collective viewpoint through an abstraction filter, so what we write is suggestive, rather than a force-fed opinion. There are maybe some things you should question about the world around you and there is every reason to pursue the notion that all is not what it looks to be. Don't be fed every opinion you have. Go out and find your own"

The early Lost Soul’s sound could easily have been described as a postmodern, Manchester-inspired acknowledgement; the electronic influences, as well as the image and language of the band's key lieutenants often alluded to the 90’s baggy cultural references. It was perhaps the second EP’s title, Hidden In Plain Sight though that gave the game away - this wasn’t just a self styled Manchester influenced band, this was in fact a band with much more clout in song-craft and musical chemistry than they were given credit for.

Lost Souls have since moved away and detached themselves from that place in a very short space of time, quickly picking up fans at their commanding live gigs as well as moving on sonically to a place of their own making, which shows how quickly a band can hit the spot when all the elements come together naturally.

Lost Souls are Sam Warner (vocals), Michael Mckiernan (bass), Tommie Wincott (electronics), Tom Wilkins (drums) & Andy Brown (guitar).

For fans of all ages, this is the concert of a lifetime.

The new DVD comes hot on the heels of remarkably productive year for the group, which saw the release of their first new album in sixteen years, That's Why God Made The Radio (Capitol / Brother Records), and The Beach Boys: Doin' It Again which features live performances, behind-the-scenes exclusives from the 2012 recording sessions, as well as never-before-seen footage from the 1966 Good Vibrations recording sessions, and moving tributes to founding members Carl and Dennis Wilson. This also features as a bonus disc on the DVD release only.

Marc Bennett, co-director of  the film says: "To document this once-in-a-lifetime moment in music history as The Beach Boys embarked on their 50th year anniversary world tour was an experience I still have not come down from. This show is a solidification of their legacy and a tribute to creative endurance and artistic achievement that crosses all cultural and geographical boundaries. In spite of the obstacles they may have encountered over the years, they have reached this 50th year milestone as few bands have ever done, or even imagined. What they leave behind, as captured in this performance, is a body of work that is indelibly etched in music history and popular culture on a global level."

Joe Thomas, who also co-directs the film, says: "It was truly an honor to be allowed to capture this historic performance. The song selection allows fans both new and old a chance to fully appreciate the span and depth of the Beach Boys catalogue. This DVD includes performances from their hits in the early 60's to selections from their latest Top 3 Album. To be able to film all five surviving members of this historic band, together one more time...was certainly a dream come true..."

Wondrous dance-punk” Pitchfork

Brooklyn's Dinowalrus, fronted by visual artist and sometime guitarist of Titus Andronicus, Pete Feigenhaum, and backed by Max Tucker and Liam Andrew have released a new video for new single Beth Steel, out May 12 2012.

Directed by Argentinean Roberto Llauro, the video uses the striking image of The Domino Sugar Factory as its centre piece – the same image gracing the cover of the band's anticipated debut UK album release Best Behavior. Doused in electrifying hues and back dropped by swirls of galaxy, the track offers welcome reminiscence of our own baggy scene, sparked by the likes of The Stones Roses, as well as to the band’s interests in krautrock, house music, post-punk and psychedelic rock.
