Passionate, political and darkly comedic, IDLES’ debut album “Brutalism” made an impact that no-one, not least the band, could have expected when it arrived, seemingly out of nowhere, in 2017. It was an album with such relevance to the fractured Britain that birthed it, that the band’s potent individuality and honesty simply couldn’t be ignored – and was described perfectly at the time by Uncut as: "a rare rock record with the rage, urgency, wit and shattering of complacency usually found only in grime."

No band toured harder, and invites to support the likes of Foo Fighters and The Maccabees (at Alexandra Palace) saw IDLES’ message spread even further, leading to a signing with the Brooklyn and London independent Partisan Records. IDLES second album saw them become leaders in a movement of new bands tearing down outdated perceptions of masculinity and bucking a trend of style over substance. Songs from the record were full-throated indictments of sexism, racism, the polarisation of Britain in the wake of Brexit, nationalism and toxic masculinity. The record felt both incredibly personal and at other times universal, wearing both its heart - and an active mind - on its sleeve. In a musical landscape that had become so safe and sanitised, IDLES were and remain a bolt to the arm of the norm.

Here was a band you could pin all your hopes on, ideals you could rally round, a set of songs you could believe in. And so many people have done just that – part of IDLES’ success has been down to putting their fans first. A community, the AF Gang, was formed on social media in the wake of “Brutalism” that has now grown to tens of thousands of members. A judgement free zone where people can discuss everything from their musical tastes to their mental health, the group features regular contributions from members of IDLES themselves. The tight connection between the band and those who back them remains a fiercely important part of what makes them what they are, even now.

That second album, 'Joy As An Act Of Resistance', debuted at no.5 in the UK charts upon its release last August, breaking Rough Trade’s all-time record for most pre-orders and sales in a day. It was, for a period, the no.1 best reviewed record of 2018 (average rating of 88 across 25 reviews) and at the end of 2018 it had won a fanbase far beyond the UK, featuring in album of the year lists across key media worldwide.

The band saw not only the album’s singles but the album itself A-listed at 6 Music and earned major features, among others, from the likes of Q, Mojo and The Guardian with covers to follow at DIY, Loud & Quiet, Kerrang!, So Young, CRACK and NME. IDLES won Best Breakthrough at the Q Awards, Best Breakthrough Act at Kerrang! Awards, were nominated for Breakthrough Artist at the Brit Awards and performed a raucous Jools Holland debut which NME called “history in the making…incomparably brilliant,” likening it to Arctic Monkeys and Kanye West's first appearances on the show.

They were announced as 6 Music's no.1 album of the year, won both the coveted Ivor Novello award for Best Album and saw not one, but two extensive tours sell out worldwide. Dates in the UK, US & Australia and festival performances across the globe were full of people eager to see a band famed as much for their frantic, unforgettable live shows as their rousing songs. Their last run of London shows, three consecutive dates at The Electric Ballroom in April, all sold out in minutes – and on December 7th this year they return to Alexandra Palace, this time as the headliners. Their biggest headline performance yet, it culminates a remarkable last couple of years for a band who have never given us anything less than everything. As well as a chance to celebrate all that has come before, it will also be the first opportunity for people to hear much-anticipated new material from an-as-yet untitled third album set for 2020.

Delta Sleep’s attraction has always come from the dynamics they produce. Drawing as much influence from punk, indie and electronic music as the math-rock world they’re home to, the Canterbury (via Brighton) quartet return with ‘Ghost City, their second full-length album, which is due out this August on Big Scary Monsters.

What started as an earnest foray into pushing the boundaries of fledgling math-rock has morphed into something much more for Delta Sleep. The band surprise their listeners with every release by constantly tweaking and perfecting their sound, and their new album is no exception to this ethic. Not content to be defined by any strict sub-genre or category, Delta Sleep continue to mould their sound into something that goes beyond the labels of just math-rock, demonstrating a firm command of structure and melody.

‘Ghost City’ was written over the course of two years, between the bands tours in Europe, Japan and Mexico, before heading to Northern Italy to record it. “We figured it was the same price to record in Italy, so we brought our friend and producer Mark Roberts along for the ride,” says Devin Yuceil (vocals/guitar), “we booked a bunch of shows on the way down which pretty much covered our recording costs, which also meant that we had around a week of playing the new material everyday leading to the studio, a luxury we don’t often have.”

Conceptually, the new album is a tech-noir wherein the world now operates as one city in a collective consciousness under the rule of vast tech firms - organic nature and wildlife are a thing of the past, a myth. Centred around a female protagonist who exists as a cog in the machine, ‘Ghost City’ is both bleak and dystopian but at times also uplifting and oddly cathartic; exploring existentialism, mundanity, oppression and ultimately the negative effects of technology on the world.

The bands future-facing approach to intelligent songwriting has previously garnered them considerable support from fervent fans and critics alike, combining guitar driven melodies over jazz influenced grooves, all topped with thought provoking and emotional vocals. ‘Ghost City’ is the sound of Delta Sleep at their inspiriting best, mirroring the energy of their live shows interlaced with moments of sweeping ambience, uplift and complex yet captivating instrumentation.

“This album feels like a snapshot of where the songs were at that time,” says Dave Jackson (bass), “You can even hear little blemishes throughout, which we love - chatter in between takes, us fucking around and generally having fun. A couple of the tracks were even improvised on the day, we’d never played them before, liked the vibe and they made it onto the album. We’ve also sprinkled in some field recordings from our time spent in Japan and Mexico.”

For those who were previously enthralled by the band’s richly textured sound this is a significant release on its own terms, let alone as another step towards wherever Delta Sleep might take themselves. ‘Ghost City’ is the sound of their life and subsequent cultural experiences redefining the way the band collectively compose and express themselves, resulting in their most focused and exciting work so far.

"...cut-up, cerebral lyrics over brooding but catchy post-punk" - The Observer

"Drahla are the UK's most uncompromising new band" - DIY

"There's a sinister groove to this fine debut from Drahla, a Yorkshire trio who embellish their disjointed post-punk beats with atmospheric squalls of sax." - Uncut Magazine

"Drahla have pulled together pockets of confusion and beauty for a rich and captivating debut unlike any other." - Dork

"Leeds trio’s potent first album takes rugged-but-cerebral post-punk on a propulsive, saxophone-tinted journey." - The Guardian

---

“Go inwards and be bold.” This was Harmony Korine’s advice to aspiring creatives, during a Q&A at the British Film Institute back in early 2016. For the recently-formed Drahla, his words served as something of a directive, encouraging the trio to trust their own instincts, however far removed they might be from those of their peers. Three years on, the Leeds-formed band have defined their own vital subset of art-rock with Useless Coordinates, a debut album that’s as fearless as it is enthralling.

Speaking from her current base in south-east London with bassist Rob Riggs, singer/guitarist Luciel Brown recounts the record’s somewhat chaotic gestation. “Most of last year was spent touring, so we were squeezing writing and recording in from the beginning of 2018 until end of August.” In-between a headline tour, support slots with Ought and METZ, and multiple festival appearances - including at Meltdown at the request of The Cure’s Robert Smith - Brown, Riggs and Wakefield-based drummer Mike Ainsley managed 10 days in the studio in total.

It was the unsettled nature of the period that part-inspired the album’s title. “[Useless Coordinates] summarised all of our situations,” Brown explains. “We had all these shows coming up and we knew we needed to leave our jobs and change our living situations to make all this stuff happen. So we had all these fixed points and timelines, but at the same time we felt quite lost within all of that.”

Though they felt adrift in their personal lives, artistically Drahla thrived amongst confusion. Experimentation was integral to the creative process, with Brown and Riggs continuing to swap instruments as per their live shows, while collectively they were open to relinquishing traditional song structures in favour of adopting a more instinctive approach. Another integral development proved to be the involvement Chris Duffin of XAM Duo, who played saxophone on large swathes of the record and whose esoteric musical tastes were influential.

Via Duffin, they discovered the work of Japanese synth pioneers Mariah and saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu. These cult figures figure amongst an eclectic array of musical touch points, from Glenn Miller and Swell Maps, to L.A.-band Behavior. As per their earliest releases, No Wave and post-punk remain integral to Drahla’s musical universe, evident in Brown’s brilliantly deadpan drawl, in the Gang Of Four-esque guitars on Gilded Cloud, and in Duffin’s skronking saxophone on React/Revolt, which draws parallels with the work of James Chance and the Contortions.

The set’s sharp angles, stark tones and claustrophobic textures are reflected in the album’s artwork. Designed by Brown and Riggs - as per all previous record sleeves and promotional videos - the minimalist, mixed media creation takes inspiration from Talking Heads and Gang Of Four album art, the work of American artist Cy Twombly, and the economical, regimented aesthetic of the Bauhaus movement. “Drahla came about off the back of needing an outlet for creative expression,” Brown explains. “So the whole aesthetic is hugely important. As important as the music.”

Whatever the medium, Brown’s interests lie in looking beyond the immediate to the abstract and indefinable. Her lyrics are developed from observations, notes and poems, and the fragmented imagery is spliced together to disorientating effect. On Gilded Cloud elegant snapshots from the golden age of Hollywood are juxtaposed with abrasive guitar textures, Pyramid Estate draws parallels between Ancient Egypt and the present day, and Serenity evokes the violent energy of a Francis Bacon painting. Beneath the abstraction are a diverse array of themes, including gender fluidity (Invisible Sex), city living (Primitive Rhythm) and artistic expression (Unwound).

The result is an uncompromising but deeply rewarding debut where the internal and external, cerebral and visceral coalesce to quite startling effect.

1. Gilded Cloud
2. Serenity
3. Pyramid Estate
4. Stimulus for Living
5. React/Revolt
6. Primitive Rhythm

Charly Bliss announce UK and European tour

Tour starts: 4th November 2019
More info: Charly Bliss’ website

""Young Enough" is youth encased in titanium. It's fist-pumping out the car window to an old LCD Soundsystem song, it's a supercut of the way your exes looked when they smiled, it's feeling like John Hughes read your journal and cast the Brat Pack in its movie adaptation.” - The FADER

“Young Enough is a masterstroke” - Billboard

"The Brooklyn band’s second record is bigger and darker, amplifying their ’80s new-wave sparkle into ecstatic triumph." - Pitchfork

"Eva Hendricks [is] one of the best rock songwriters working today." -Stereogum

“Charly Bliss’ triumphant new album Young Enough is an unflinching celebration of survival.” - NME

"Blindingly bright, gleeful-sounding power-pop with teeth like piranhas." -Entertainment Weekly

“A gargantuan step forward.” - DIY

"Young Enough, is essential because it’s the latest reminder of the healing power of music” - The Line of Best Fit

Today NYC's Charly Bliss (Eva Hendricks, Sam Hendricks, Spencer Fox and Dan Shure) share an incredible video for “Young Enough”, the title track from their critically acclaimed second album. Directed by Henry Kaplan, the video perfectly compliments the emotionally charged single.

WATCH THE "YOUNG ENOUGH" VIDEO

Of the video, Eva says, “This video is so magical and unlike anything we’ve ever made before. I told (director) Henry Kaplan that I was feeling inspired by the video for Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush, and he took that initial idea and made something totally beautiful and unique that’s as cinematic and sentimental as the song.

Despite the fact that this video looks so dreamlike and serene, it was very physically draining to make. The entire crew and anyone who wasn’t in a given shot had to sprint behind the steadicam op so that they wouldn’t be seen and ruin the effect of the giant open field where we were shooting. Between that, the choreography, racing to utilize available daylight, speeding up and slowing down the track to achieve the slow-motion and fast-motion effects, and trying to get perfect, full takes because there’s so few cuts, this was an extremely challenging video to make, but for that reason it’s also our favourite.”

Eva says about the track, “For so many reasons, “Young Enough” is the centrepiece of this album. This is a song about perspective, nostalgia and growing up. The first time that I fell in love it was tumultuous and frustrating, but I think all of the endless drama made me believe that it was “worth it.” Sort of like the Twilight-movie trope that relationships that are the most painful are the most romantic. Instead of writing about it through the lens of anger and frustration, I wanted to write a song that was really honest about the fact that I really loved this person, and regardless of how messy it was and how immature we both were, I was both grateful for the experience but also grateful that I’ve grown up and out of believing that being in love should be so hard.”

Young Enough is out now on Lucky Number - purchase/stream here!

Charly Bliss will play a headline show at London’s Scala on November 6th as part of a new headline UK Tour, and they have also joined the line-up for the Primavera Weekender. Additional European shows to be announced soon. All dates below:

LISTEN TO LATEST SINGLE: "LIVING ROOM, NY"
PURCHASE "THE BIG FREEZE"

----

"On her fifth solo album, the New York musician both evolves as a singer-songwriter and grows in confidence, addressing heavy emotional themes with candor and grace." - Pitchfork

"The Big Freeze captures her in a moment of releasing every pent-up feeling at once, producing an emotionally harrowing listen full of unflinching honesty." - VICE

If gravity is strong enough, at the end of time our universe will collapse, pulling all of existence back down to infinitesimal size, like before the Big Bang. But if expansion outpaces gravity, eventually the universe will be cold and empty--all light, heat, and connection will be gone. That possibility is called The Big Freeze.

Recorded in her childhood home during the dead of winter, The Big Freeze represents a pivotal step for Stevenson. Despite her pedigree in the punk and indie rock scenes, and the occasional inclusion of a backing band (like the sprightly, C86-inspired pop track “Dermatillomania”), for the first time on record Stevenson’s voice and guitar are in clear and highlighted focus. It is a natural aesthetic choice for the musician, who has often toured as a solo act and who pulls influence from the great American songbook, and a choice that plays to the core strength and organic beauty of her writing. And though it is easily the darkest and most emotionally-devastating album of Stevenson’s career, it is also without a doubt her most powerful.

Stevenson builds on her own private worlds with choruses of multi-tracked voices, swarms of cellos, French horns and violins; orchestration that blooms and swells throughout each intimate performance. Exploring thematic ideas of distance and misconnection; worlds pulling apart, aching loneliness, and attempts to drive out hibernating dormant demons.

In the opening track Stevenson’s voice insists the listener “lay back with arms out, all-in, unfeeling,” to allow themselves to sink into a flood of instrumental sound that thrums between dissonance and resolution. From waves crashing in an abandoned waterpark on the haunting “Value Inn”, to the last leaves trembling before winter sets in on “Rattle At Will”, a creeping sense of isolation and anxious beauty surrounds every song. And yet there is also warmth, and hope. The album’s third track “Living Room, NY” tells of an intercontinental love and longing which seems to have the strength to thrive despite even the most trying and impossible of circumstances. Across ten tracks, the listener will travel through the cold night, following after a small but powerful flame burning from the other side.

Stevenson is a songwriter whose strengths have gone unsung for far too long, but The Big Freeze is likely to change that. At times you will be reminded of classic songwriters from both the mainstream and the fringe, whether it’s Jason Molina, Judee Sill, Harry Nilsson or Dolly Parton. But always you will be reminded of the power of the human voice (and a single guitar) to invoke the universe. Or in this case, it’s end.

The single is taken from their self-titled EP, that was released earlier in the year on Nice Swan Records and that was described by DIY as "a pure, twinkle-eyed joy from start to finish." Nice Swan have quickly become one of the country’s most exciting new labels and landing pad for early releases for the likes of Sports Team, Pip Blom and Sweaty Palms. More information on FUR:

The band were formed after frontman Murray met original guitarist Harry in a Fresher’s internet forum before their respective University lectures began and the duo instantly began writing songs. "I was very aware that going to a place like Brighton would definitely allow you to do the band thing," explains the singer “So when me and Harry met each other we thought: let's get it started as soon as possible so we're not wasting time.

With bassist Tav and drummer Flynn soon completing the line-up, waste time they did not. Last autumn’s ‘If You Know That I’m Lonely’, is testament to that. Armed with a camera and a £100 budget, the group headed to woodland to shoot the video to the aforementioned single themselves.

Subsequently, and around 4 and a half million YouTube hits later, the band have landed support slots to the likes of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Matt Maltese and more; their listenership is fast-spreading with praise - and even fan art - coming in from all over the world. "I think the one thing we really appreciate is people telling us we have a fanbase in places we never expected”, noted Murray on this. “Indonesia has become a big thing, and when people in Peru say there are whole groups of people out there that love us, that's amazing.

It goes some way in showing the power of simply uploading a good song can have, even amongst the swathe of music constantly flooding the web. It pricked the ears of the likes of Steve Lamacq, an early supporter via his BBC 6 Music show, and Nice Swan Records; who released their debut EP earlier this week.

Despite being relatively early in their life as a band, FUR sound like a band already capable of crafting intelligent songs; penning a particularly nostalgic strain of guitar music but making it sound fresh again. Taking the age-old love song trope and reinvigorating it, theirs are tracks that feel familiar and classic but with a vibrancy that’s entirely new. “The three most written-about things are love, money and sex”, mentions Murray. “One I’m not that comfortable writing about, and I don’t have that much money, but everyone’s felt some feeling of love and there’s something powerful about that. It’s the strongest emotional connection I can have with a song.”

Tour dates: Throughout May & June
Album release: Out now

Selected praise for The Molochs:

"...a striking proposition, for two reasons: their spectacularly caustic wit; and their refined ability to chisel away at a song until it is sharp, sinewy and instantly catchy." - The Quietus

"The Molochs introductory is a thrilling and thoughtful beginning for a duo with plenty of promise." NME

"One of the year's best. Which year? Any year." - MOJO

"The baggy basslines tease a slightly warped guitar melody, that only feeds into their youthful sound that contradicts with their retro influences." The Line Of Best Fit

More on 'Flowers In The Spring':

The Molochs' America’s Velvet Glory was the earliest burst of light and energy to hit in 2017, an album of electrified rock ‘n’ roll like Dylan and Lou Reed by a band named after the Ginsberg-ian glutton god who demanded the sacrifice of all things good and pure. But now it’s 2018 and Moloch himself is fatter and happier than ever, so the Molochs couldn’t just make another record. After Glory showed the world who they were, they needed to make an album that showed what they could do. So Flowers In The Spring is where the Molochs worked harder, thought harder and fought harder to be the kind of band that the times demand: “I like to think the world just needs some good solid songs out there,” founder Lucas Fitzsimons says. “It’s simple. It’s not easy … but it’s simple.”

America’s Velvet Glory, their first-ever record for L.A.’s Innovative Leisure label, had sparked their first-ever U.S and European tours, first-ever festival sets, first-ever international press and more. (Mojo even said they’d made one of the year’s best albums—“Any year!”) Follow-up Flowers bloomed almost exactly a year later at Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio between December of 2017 and January of 2018, where Fitzsimons and longtime band member Ryan Foster had recorded Glory. By the time they’d returned, they had a slate of songs that had come to Fitzsimons in flash moments, written on nerve-wracking transcontinental flights or on isolated nights in an L.A. apartment, captured at once in bursts of insight or rescued from almost-abandonment in discarded notebooks.

As on Glory, inspiration from Syd Barrett, Dylan, Nikki Sudden and kindred spirit Peter Perrett of the Only Ones was at work, but the Molochsare endlessly (appropriately?) ravenous when it comes to things to read and listen to and learn from. On Flowers they’d refine and recombine their sound, working in that long tradition of poets who cover (or discover) themselves in pop songs. “To Kick In A Lover’s Door” blows Flowers open with the wit and precision of the Go-Betweens, and “I Wanna Say To You” draws more from some of Creation Records’ dreamiest dreamers than it does from any esoteric 60s howlers. “Flowers In The Spring” and “Pages Of Your Journal” could be two lost Kinks singles from two different Kinks eras—that Ray Davies-ian venom stays the same, of course—and the charming/disarming “Too Lost In Love” makes feeling down sound like cheering up, just like the Clean did.

Yes, they do have their first-ever string section here, and that could confuse some people. (“People go, ‘Wow, it sounds more mature.’” says Fitzsimons. “What kind of boring shit is that?”) But Flowers isn’t a grown-up album or a show-off album or a break-up album or a just-had-to-make-another-album album because the Molochs don’t pick targets that tiny. Love and disgrace and life and death blur and bleed into each other, but at the core of Flowers is a story about standing against the inhuman by being more human, however messily honest that needs to be. (Or like Fitzsimons sings at the end of the record: beware that “determination by a whole / to destroy the human soul.” Funny how that comes in a song where he claims he can’t explain everything that happens to him, because he sort of just did.) So consider their new Flowers In The Spring a meticulously plotted counterattack against all things Moloch-ian, with clear, concise, immediate, undeniable, simple, direct pop songs, says Fitzsimons, each sharpened enough to cut through anything it touched. That’s what he needed to do, he says, because that’s what felt most true. Maybe it really was that simple, even if it wasn’t easy. Like he’d explain in a song with just seven words: “There’s something I wanna say to you.”

The Murder Capital UK tour starts 31 January 2019

TheMurderCapital_LEAD_NeelamKhanVela-14-990000079e04513c.jpg

Tour announcement: The Murder Capital
Tour dates: January / February 2019
Label: Human Season
More info: Band website

The Murder Capital ended 2018 as that rare thing: a band tipped from all corners without having released a single song. In an age where people and bands overshare by default, The Murder Capital have been doing the opposite. If you wanted to know about The Murder Capital, you had to get to a show and see for yourself. That’s if you could get in. Based on the caustic strength of one live recording of ‘More Is Less’, which went viral on YouTube (watch), and feverish word of mouth from those who have been lucky enough to attend these early gigs, The Murder Capital have built a formidable reputation. In just over a year, they’ve sold out shows in their hometown of Dublin (to 400 people), played with Slaves, Shame and fellow countrymen Fontaines DC and seen the likes of the NME, Loud & Quiet, Dork and DIY back them already – with The Irish Times calling them out as Ireland’s best new rock band.

With ‘Feeling Fades’ the band fulfill their early promise – delivering a brooding, propulsive slice of post-punk recorded with Flood (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Foals). In one of their rare interviews so far, the band have stated they are driven by the genuine desire to affect cultural change, and when front-man James McGovern repeats the lyric “the now elapsed ‘round you and me, and it kept us all together” on this, their debut single, you start to believe that they’re capable of achieving just that.

Stream debut single ‘Feeling Fades’ here.

Watch ‘More Is Less’ (Live session) here.

The Murder Capital will tour the UK in January and February:

31st January – Liverpool – EBGB’s

1st February – Cardiff – Club Ifor Bach

2nd February – London – The Shacklewell Arms

3rd February – Brighton – The Prince Albert

5th February – Birmingham - The Sunflower Lounge

6th February – Newcastle – Think Tank? Underground

7th February – Glasgow – The Poetry Club

8th February – Edinburgh – Sneaky Pete’s

They will also support IDLES at the band’s sold out show at The Electric Ballroom on 6th April.

“Murder Capital are one of those most oddly entertaining prospects – a punk band that can truly instill can’t-look-away levels of captivation.” - NME

Scott Matthews releases new single and new album on 27 April 2018

YsJk2lx.jpg

Album release: 'The Great Untold' by Scott Matthews
Release date: 27 April 2018
Label: Shedio
More info: Artist website

"Putting my world on the line
Turning one leaf at a time
Never knowing what I'll find"

Scott Matthews’ new record, 'The Great Untold', deserves to be a career defining one. The sixth studio album by the Ivor Novello Award-winning singer-songwriter (Best Song Musically & Lyrically for 'Elusive') is a master class in honesty, instinct and reflection. A largely acoustic recording, Matthews’ new record features sparse production after being recorded over a productive winter at home. His ten-song cycle is the sound of a man now entirely comfortable in his own skin, putting his neck on the line with a collection of quietly extraordinary songs.

The ghosts of Paul Simon, Ron Sexsmith, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake and John Martyn loom large on a sixth record that revels in its stripped-back nature to show what an exceptionally strong songwriter Matthews really is. The absence of multi-layered instrumentation on 'The Great Untold', however, should not infer that it lacks depth. The richness in Matthews’ new work comes from the intricacy of his guitar work, influenced by the likes of Bert Jansch and Mark Kozelek, whilst showcasing again an otherworldly singing voice that betrays an everyman inflection and down-to-earth persona.

In many ways, 'The Great Untold' is the start of a new era for Matthews. Since his debut album, 'Passing Stranger', in 2006, the Wolverhampton-born artist has further refined his craft. Writing deft and sensitive songs during a trajectory that began with the ethereal ‘Elusive’, The Great Untold marks a new beginning on his own terms. The first great arc of his career was completed with his Home duology; a pair of records that reflected on his journey thus far. The Great Untold is the sound of that man moving on. Matthews is recently married, soon-to-experience fatherhood and has new hopes and fears, new stories to tell. “After Home Part 2 was finished, I was looking to move forward by marrying harmony with my experiences since the last record. The plan to write an acoustic record has always been there. And finally the time is right to do that.”

Matthews has tested himself as a songwriter. He started as a soloist and has gone full circle, again ready to fly alone. It opens new possibilities, a different type of challenge. “It takes me out of my comfort zone and has made me test myself. I’ve largely pared it down to guitar and vocals. At the beginning, there was nobody else. It’s time to surprise myself. It’s time to go back to my own world.”

Lyrically, 'The Great Untold' is a work with poetic intent. “It’s a collection of songs that lots of people will hopefully relate to. Naturally, my starting points are from a personal perspective but most times I have to broaden the idea so it's not so insular as a piece of music. It can be a challenge but I'm very proud of where I've ventured to and there's been a lot of soul searching woven into these songs that I hope people will appreciate. When I’m writing, I’m almost hearing voices from The Masters and thinking: ‘Would they approve?’”

The point is to make a connection. “I want to move somebody with the power of moods and music.” It is in the right hands. And that’s an opposite description for The Great Untold. It is a record written by a man at the peak of his powers – 'As The Day Passes', 'Something Real', 'Song To A Wallflower' and the stunning 'Cinnamon' are amongst the finest in his songbook – and by a musician able to channel great beauty in songs that reveal the most human of truths.

"...engagingly thoughtful and classy singer-songwriter" - The Guardian

Loudon Wainwright III ‘Surviving Twin’ Live March 2017

Tour announcement: Loudon Wainwright III - ‘Surviving Twin’ Live
Tour dates: March 2017
More infoLeicester Square Theatre

'Surviving Twin' is a posthumous collaboration in which Grammy Award winner Wainwright connects some of his best songs with the writing of his late father Loudon Wainwright Jr, the esteemed LIFE Magazine columnist. The performance is a game of creative catch between son and father, exploring issues like birth, loss, parenthood, fashion, pet ownership, and mortality. In a one man show, Wainwright recites a selection of his father’s compositions interspersed with songs from his own catalogue. 'Surviving Twin' has never been previously performed in the UK.

Loudon’s illustrious career as a songwriter, humourist and actor, spans over two-dozen albums. He collaborated with Joe Henry, on the music for Judd Apatow’s hit movie 'Knocked Up', penned music for the British theatrical adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s novel, 'Lucky You' and also recorded several songs for HBO’s 'Boardwalk Empire'. His songs have been recorded by many including Johnny Cash, Mose Allison, Earl Scruggs, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Rufus Wainwright and Bonnie Raitt.

As an actor, he hit the screens early in his career playing Captain Calvin Spalding, the “singing surgeon”, on the American television show, M*A*S*H and has subsequently appeared in films directed by Martin Scorsese, Hal Ashby, Christopher Guest, Tim Burton, Cameron Crowe, and Judd Apatow.

A limited edition, deluxe hardback programme including an 18 track CD of show excerpts will be available exclusively at the performances.  Listen to the tracks here

Leicester Square Theatre, London 9th, 10th, 11th (inc. matinee), 12th March 2017. Tickets available now.

Press reaction to date

“The sardonically humorous singer-songwriter delivers a moving meditation on father/son relationships.” - The Hollywood Reporter

“…a bristling, acerbic, ultimately affecting family album of a show, with father-son resentments, hostilities and resemblances laid out for all to see, alongside the love and self-loathing.” - New York Times

American Football announce first UK dates

Tour announcement: American Football
Countries: UK
Dates: May 14-16 2015
Tickets from: American Football website

It’s finally happening…In May 2015, American Football are coming to the UK for the first time to play three dates in London, Leeds and Manchester. The dates follow on from American Football’s incredibly successful US reunion tour, and the reissue of their seminal self-titled album.

  • May 14th 2015 - London, UK @ Electric Ballroom
  • May 15th 2015 - Leeds, UK @ Brudenell Social Club
  • May 16th 2015 - Manchester, UK @ Gorilla

In the 15 years since its release, American Football's self-titled debut full-length has quietly become one of the most fiercely beloved titles in the US indie Polyvinyl catalogue. Though the trio - Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Owen, Owls), Steve Lamos, and Steve Holmes - only played a few shows and released just one other record (a three-song EP that preceded this full-length), their influence and legacy has steadily continued to grow in the time after they disbanded.

From its now iconic artwork to the band's unique songwriting approach (highlighted by an emphasis on shifting time signatures and sincere lyrics), American Football proves a record doesn't become a true classic through flashiness or catering to trends, but rather the deep emotional connection it forges between the music and the listener.

A testament to the act's lasting influence, American Football maintains a loyal fanbase eager for material from the band. Due to an outpouring of request, in 2004 Polyvinyl reissued American Football on vinyl. Following up on past success and requests, in 2008 Polyvinyl issued a 1-sided 12" of the American Football EP with new photography by Chris Strong. Despite the small amount of recorded work and hardly any touring, American Football remains one of Polyvinyl Record's most loved bands to this day.

Previous praise for American Football

  • “…currently the most influential album in the genre” – Pitchfork (8.6)
  • “The album serves as what indie rock should be about, synthesizing the musical world around us, not dividing and separating.” – PASTE Magazine
  • “…there’s no question that the music that American Football did produce is as close to timeless as modern indie gets” – The Line Of Best Fit
  • “… one of emo’s essential LPs” – CLASH

The Scenes announce tour dates with the Specials

  • Nov 27th – Bristol, Start The Bus
  • Nov 28th – Liverpool, Studio 2

More dates will be announced soon - please check the band’s website for most up to date information.

An experimental band barely out of their teens, The Scenes are from Oulu, Northern Finland and are a band that represent something between art pop, hardcore punk and progressive rock. Although they themselves would describe their sound simply as ‘rock’, the oblique song structures, angular rhythms and contorted lyrics, combined with their powerful showmanship mastery makes for something altogether more special.

No strangers to the live circuit, in May 2014 The Scenes toured the UK earning a reputation for their lights-out mayhem live performances, playing festival slots at The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Live At Leeds and Dot to Dot, as well as supporting Bo Ningen on their club tour. Their sets are characterised by neurotic bursts - serene then suddenly lively to the point where it’s almost certain that something will break - be it equipment or bones.

After their debut album “Images Of Animals Crying In Public” in 2013, second album ‘Beige’ will come out in October, on the Sound of Finland imprint.

Painted Palms announce European Tour

European tour announcement: Painted Palms
Dates: 17-30 April 2014

Amid continuing hype around recent album Forever, San Francisco’s Painted Palms are pleased to announce a European Tour this April.

Whether living four states away or four blocks away, Reese Donahue and Christopher Prudhomme have always found geography has no bounds against their psych electro pop output. The two cousins grew up together in Louisiana, but started making music over the Internet when one moved to San Francisco. The virtual exchange proved to be such a fruitful method (with their first EP Canopy being personally discovered by Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes and released with Secretly Canadian) that it spurred them to continue making music this way despite ending up living in the same city. And so, the songs that formed their debut full-length Forever (released February 2014 with Polyvinyl), came together as if the musicians were still separated by 2000 miles.

Tours with Of Montreal, Braids and STRFKR around their first EP showed testament to the duo’s spacious persona – affixing themselves behind computer screens clearly has no impact on their physical affinity. With many more shows under their belt since, their songwriting and performance abilities are so inherent and compatible with each other that they can cross seas and energetically emit their blissfully buoyant tracks to live audiences as effortlessly as clicking ‘send’.

Characterised by pop structures and memorable melodies, don’t be fooled into thinking Painted Palms are a wholly sunny band. Forever can get dark particularly in its lyrics, with much of the focus centered on how it feels to be caught between the external world and one’s own thoughts. And in that moment a hint of irony is apparent, for as much as the members of Painted Palms want to get out of their own heads, they’re awfully good at writing songs that will immediately get stuck in yours.

Painted Palms’ European run is as follows:

April 17 Stockholm, Sweden @ Debaser
April 19 Bristol, UK @ Louisiana
April 20 Manchester, UK @ Soup Kitchen
April 22 London, UK @ Old Blue Last
April 23 Paris, France @ Espace B
April 24 Brussels, Belgium @ Botanique Witloofbar
April 25 Luzern, Switzerland @ Sudpol
April 26-29 Germany TBC
April 30 Amsterdam, Netherlands @ Bitterzoet

Dearly Beloved announce UK & European dates

Tour announcement: UK & Europe tour from Dearly Beloved
Dates: April & May
Find out more on: official Dearly Beloved website

Toronto’s Dearly Beloved is a one-of-a-kind sweat-fest led by Rob Higgins, a Canadian bass masher and tambourine thrashing rock tigress, Niva Chow. The band has toured extensively and shared stages with Mike Watt, Juliette Lewis, Sloan, Franz Ferdinand, Airborne Toxic Event and My Chemical Romance, among others. Dearly Beloved’s monstrous bass-driven hooks, intense energy and vocal interplay have led to comparisons to The Pixies, X and The Ramones and their over-the-top live show is not to be missed.

Dearly Beloved have certainly learned the value of putting their collective nose to the grindstone during the two years since the band unleashed the striking stoner/shoegaze/psych/prog/Goth/punk/pop opus Hawk vs. Pigeon upon the world. That’s all Dearly Beloved has been doing: working. Then working a bit more, sliding in some more work on the way home and topping all that hard work off with a little extra hard work, just for good measure.

There were invitations to further tour Canada, then to travel overseas and show U.K. and European audiences the goods for the first time. All that playing, in turn, hardened Dearly Beloved into a battle-scarred, hell-raising rock ‘n’ machine non pareil and, arguably, a better band than it’s ever been. So, rather than pause for breath at the end of 18 months in the van like any sane band would do, Dearly Beloved decamped to the infamous Rancho de la Luna studio in Joshua Tree, Calif., to write and demo the follow-up to Hawk vs. Pigeon.

Enduro, out in June, is a bristlingly antisocial punk-metal juggernaut with an old school rock n’ roll soul that sounds as wild-eyed and breathless and half-mad as a record made at the end of nearly two years of roadwork should. Helping Dearly Beloved on their way to the take-no-prisoners brilliance of Enduro were Rancho de la Luna mainstays Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal) and Chris Goss (Sound City Players), figures familiar to any disciple of the “desert rock” scene that gave the world Kyuss, Masters of Reality and Queens of the Stone Age who both contributed guitar to the new record.

Although the album is now complete there’s still no rest for the Beloveds. The band hit the road again this Spring to revisit Europe with their new material.

Anamanaguchi announce 2014 European Tour

Tour announcement: Anamanaguchi, European tour
Dates: Jan 30th to Feb 10th 2014
Listen / find out more on:  official Anamanaguchi website

The explosive Brooklyn indie/dance hacker boy band Anamanaguchi unleash themselves on the UK yet again this January / February as part of their 2014 European Tour.

The full run of dates looks like this:

  • Thurs, Jan 30th – Belfast, McHughs
  • Fri, Jan 31st -  Dublin, Academy 2
  • Mon, Feb 3rd – Glasgow, King Tuts
  • Tues, Feb 4th – Manchester, Night and Day
  • Wed, Feb 5th – London, Heaven
  • Fri, Feb 7th – Amsterdam, Melkweg
  • Sat, Feb 8th – Berlin, Urban Spree @ WinterBar
  • Mon, Feb 10th – Paris, Point Ephemere

The band stuck their toes in British waters last September when Anamana fever was high after their neon splashed, electronically anthemic and sweetly escapist album ‘Endless Fantasy’ invaded our shores last summer transporting us all to a polygon dreamworld. Using vintage videogame hardware (and using it really fucking well) the band have inspired a generation of internet romantics, effortlessly tapping into any and all technological opportunities available.. (..or hacked). Tickets to their sweaty show at The Garage in London sold out well in advance, practically off the back of a single tweet and Facebook message.

Refusing to merely huddle over laptops to emit their euphoric electronics, they instead opt to pedal impossible sound effects out of their real life instruments. You can expect beautiful carnage at their forthcoming dates, not to mention light shows that will confuse nuclear missile deterrent systems. It will be the most fun you can have inside this green and pleasant land – like an exhilarating game of lazer quest with no ninja skills necessary.

Recently signed to Alcopop! Records (Johnny foreigner/ Fight Like Apes – AIM’s Small Label of The Year 2013) Anamanaguchi boast a humungous fanbase. Their loyal champs raised them over $277k kickstarter fund in just 30 days, while last summer’s hit track ‘Endless Fantasy’ made Number 1 in the US Billboard Heatseekers chart in the US. Alongside an appearance on Jimmy Fallon; videogame soundtrack credits including Rock Band, Bit Trip Runner and Scott Pilgrim (which debuted at Heatseekers Number 3); and official remix credits for Cyndi Lauper, Matt & Kim, Das Racist, M83, Fang Island and more, Anamanaguchi are certainly an act in demand. With a ceaseless energy, the band will always gleefully meet their audience with CPUs in their heads and emojis in their hearts.

Antun Opic announces London dates

"Antun Opic is the real songwriting-deal...a rare talent" - Music Radar

‘Songs peppered with wit, wisdom and a debut album of considerable charm...boldly ambitious, remarkably good and hugely enjoyable.’ – Folk Radio UK

“I don’t feel ‘home’ anywhere” says Antun Opic. With his dual origins from both Germany and Croatia, the singer-songwriter has always lets his sense of rootlessness feed into his work. Staying true to his adventurous soul he visits the UK in February, to soak in further inspiration while offering up his own to us.

The London showcases come after his debut ‘No Offense’ (on his own record label Antuned) intrigued the UK audience with a digital release last Summer. Opic's alternative blend of world music, blues, and pop made an impact, bringing the brightness and tranquillity of its hometown in the German countryside with skilfully accessed and adventurous styles from even further afield.

Antun’s solo project can encapsulate and transmit a panoply of different atmospheres, both acoustically and with amplification. On record, accompanied by his eponymous trio as well as guest musicians, he allows blaring brass and woodwind to meet swinging banjo, fiddly acoustic and deep bass, with unconventional vocal harmonies echoing in the background. His solo outing is no less beguiling though - sometimes his guitar romanticises in the style of Django Reinhardt, sometimes, it devotedly enthrals in the manner of Paco de Lucia. In some of his songs, Antun Opic includes passionate gypsy and fiery flamenco, only to recall Paul Simon's African borrowings in others.

Having toured restlessly throughout his ongoing youth with a range of characters as well as becoming a fixture in Munich’s music scene, Antun Opic has gained an intimate knowledge of performance. Despite his worl-reaching and varied influences he can ultimately deliver his adventurous artistry as a charming, effortless and sophisticated production, resulting in a live experience that is as soulful as it is jubilant.

The live sessions are also available to stream and purchase with iTunes:

Huey Lewis and The News - 'Sports' 30th anniversary edition out 13 May

Album reissue: Sports by Huey Lewis and The News (Deluxe Edition)
Release date: 13 May 2013
Label: Universal
Listen: on official website

Huey Lewis and The News' 1983 Sports album spawned four Top 10 hit singles (and another that cracked the Top 20), iconic music videos, and sold almost 10 million copies. To celebrate the blockbuster album's 30th anniversary, Lewis has personally overseen an expanded commemorative edition, to be released May 13th by UMG. Digitally remastered for CD and standard and high definition digital audio, Sports (30th Anniversary Edition) pairs each of the original album's nine songs with choice live versions on a second disc, many of which have never before been released.

The special edition includes an expanded booklet with photos and memorabilia from the band's archive and new liner notes by music journalist and author Gary Graff.

Says Huey, “We’ve always been very proud of the record and it’s going to be a blast to play it all live!”

Sports is on the cusp of RIAA Diamond Award sales certification with U.S. sales approaching 10 million copies. Self-produced by the band, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and ranked No. 2 on Billboard's year-end sales chart for 1984, second only to Michael Jackson's Thriller. Lewis created indelible music videos for each of the four Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits on Sports - If This Is It, the Gold-certified I Want A New Drug, Heart And Soul and The Heart Of Rock & Roll, which won the year's GRAMMY Award for Best Long-Form Music Video - as well as the Top 20 single, Walking On A Thin Line.

Sports was also an international success, with Top 40 chart peaks in several countries, including the UK, Canada, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, and Norway.

Huey Lewis and The News performed a hit from Sports on ABC's Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday, April 2 and will also perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, May 15.  Additional TV appearances will be announced soon.

In May, the band will launch the "Sports 30th Anniversary Tour" across North America, performing the album in its entirety. For more information on this, please visit www.hueylewisandthenews.com.
