R.E.M. to release new vinyl 7-inch collection

REM

Box set release: '7IN – 83-88' by R.E.M.
Release date: 8 December 2014

Label: UMC / Capitol

REM 7IN-83-88

Eleven singles that R.E.M. released between 1983 and 1988 with I.R.S. Records have been gathered for 7IN – 83-88, a new boxed collection of vinyl seven-inch singles to be released December 8 by UMC/Capitol. The singles feature replicated original picture sleeve art and the set includes two U.K. releases making their U.S. vinyl seven-inch debuts: “Finest Worksong” / “Time After Time” (live) and the double-pack single for “Wendell Gee” with “Crazy,” “Ages of You,” and “Burning Down.”

R.E.M.’s early storytelling was both epic and familiar, with themes of loss and alienation expressed in several songs, including “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry),” “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville,” and in their 1987 Top 10, “The One I Love.” This new, transformative music emitted from the sleepy/sharp college town of Athens, Georgia, where R.E.M. and other bands forged a scene, which spawned a movement and ultimately led to a cultural sea change in music.

1987’s “Its The End Of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” was a tongue-twisting pop culture rally cry, beckoning to the tuned-out masses, listless casualties of 1980s economics, politics, and general ‘Me Generation’ malaise.  In December 1987, Rolling Stone’s year-end issue celebrated R.E.M. on its cover as "America's Best Rock & Roll Band." By the end of R.E.M.’s run with I.R.S. Records, the band’s success had paved the way for a new generation of alt-rock and grunge acts, as Athens’ finest continued to lead the charge.

Popular music’s modern-day evolution can be traced in step with R.E.M.’s ascent and reign as one of music’s most creative and influential bands.  Explore the history that leads back to Athens.  These are the documents.

R.E.M. ‘7IN – 83-88’

  • “Radio Free Europe” / “There She Goes Again”
  • “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)” / “King of the Road”
  • “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville” / “Catapult” (Live)
  • “Can’t Get There From Here” / “Bandwagon”
  • “Driver 8” / “Crazy”
  • “Wendell G” / “Crazy” + “Ages of You” / “Burning Down” [U.K. double-pack, previously unreleased in U.S.]
  • “Fall On Me” / “Rotary Ten”
  • “Superman” / “White Tornado”
  • “The One I Love” / “Maps and Legends” (Live)

Karma To Burn announce new album, "Arch Stanton"

Album release: “Arch Stanton” by Karma To Burn
Release date: August 18, 2014
Listen on: official Karma To Burn website

The heart of the KARMA TO BURN beast pumps from West Virginia once more. The instrumental rock titans KARMA TO BURN return in full force with their highly anticipated long player ‘Arch Stanton’. From their first album, released in 1997 through Roadrunner Records, to this, their latest, the band have never moved away from the rhythmic rock that has seen them receive critical acclaim and a cult status over the years.

Returning with a riff heavy, progressive and purely instrumental record reminiscent of early highlights ‘Wild Wonderful Purgatory’ & ‘Almost Heathen’, ‘Arch Stanton’ delivers seven monumental new tracks and resurrects a track from their vaults, ‘23’, a classic number never before heard, sounding as fresh as ever for this record. Energy and spirit are back at an ultimate level, one has never seen a more powerful KARMA TO BURN.

‘Arch Stanton’ is a true return to those West Virginia roots. Backed by spiritualism, mysticism, and unrelenting grooves - the band have truly harnessed the spirit of the riff-rock ritual once again.

The band like to pay their dues on the big stages - and they have done many times - but home is where it’s dark, packed and (very) loud. 20 years of rock’n’roll history in its purest and most authentic form, resisting every compromise has left them feeling more alive than ever.

These Reigning Days: Opera of Love

These Reigning Days

Album release: “Opera of Love” by These Reigning Days
Release date: 22 September 2014
Label: Ecco
Listen: on official website

“Supple, layered rock with a taste for the epic. Pulsating electro shadings subtly counter the dazed guitar and transcendent lyrics” - Daily Mirror

“An incredible band” – BBC Introducing

Two years of continual touring will make or break a band. For Devon’s These Reigning Days it looks to be the former. Life on the road seemingly suits this ambitious trio, having recently enjoyed support slots with Metronomy, festival appearances at Glastonbury, Hop Farm, Liverpool Sound City and Boardmasters, as well as an appearance in front of 60,000 fans at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, which consequently nudged their track ‘Too Late’ to the top of the Italian charts. This summer they hit the road in the UK and Europe (also taking in Vladivostock Rocks in Eastern Russia and Emerge in Mumbai, Dehli and Bangalore) in support of their debut album ‘Opera Of Love’.

With an ear for melodic rock and an eye on the mainstream, Opera Of Love, produced by Yoad Nevo  (Goldfrapp, Moby) with additional production and mix by Ade Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters) on Opera Of Love, Changes and Living It Up, the album finds These Reigning Days in conquering form, harnessing as they do the band’s live spirit and momentum. The album’s opener, Stand Down, sets the pace, all purposeful rhythms and robust guitar work paving the way for former single, Too Late, a track that channels the urgency of White Lies and Editors while pacing toward its sky-high chorus. Punctuated with thoughtful interludes, it rarely lets up, guided all the while by lead vocalist / guitarist Dan Steer’s keen ear for melody.

The album’s title track is released on July 21 and marks the record’s centerpiece. No other track defines the band quite like this one. Forceful and full of momentum, it’s followed by the introspective I Need Time, and The Killers-esque stomp of Living It Up.

Opera Of Love is the sound of a band reaching for the top. As one fan puts it “They’re Coldplay with balls and a stiff drink instead of world peace and green tea”. Quite.

These Reigning Days is Dan Steer Songwriter, lead vocals, guitar, keys; Joe Sansome, drums; Jonny Finnis, bass, vocals.

Go Forth and Multiply: the new album by Well Hung Heart

Album release: Go Forth and Multiply by Well Hung Heart
Release date: 5 May 2014
Label: GROWvision
Listen on: official Well Hung Heart website

“With Well Hung Heart, entertaining and interesting is what you get… a band worth investigating” - Classic Rock

“In fact it’s like the feral lovechild of Howling Wolf, Mick Jagger, Joan Jett and Suzi Quattro fronting a hybrid of Nirvana and the Black Keys. All in a good way. A very good way.” – Mad Mackerel

There is no mistaking the bluesy undercurrent that forms the bedrock of Well Hung Heart’s raw and uncompromising Rock sound.

Well Hung Heart record just as they play live - stripped down to the core, void of multiple takes and studio trickery. The band’s debut album “Young Enough To Know It All” arrived in 2013, self-released through their label GROWvision. The band toured extensively throughout the US, UK, & Europe, sharing the stage with The Virginmarys, opening for Sublime at Ink-N-Iron festival, as well as being billed with Guns N Roses, Bush, and Alice In Chains at Rocklahoma - one of the biggest Rock festivals in the USA. The album also earned the band a prestigious spot at Austin’s SXSW in 2014 as well as currently being nominated for Best Rock Band at the OC Music Awards in Southern California.

Well Hung Heart’s brand new 2014 album “Go Forth and Multiply” was recorded live, with minimal over-dubs, and direct to tape, in a studio close to the bands current home base in Southern California. Sticking to the band’s live set-up, which has Davey playing simultaneous Guitar and Bass, Greta Valenti on Vocals and Keys, and Phil Wilson on Drums Wilson, the band used the recording period as an intense, creative and emotional opportunity to capture album that represents them at this moment. Produced by Well Hung Heart, Mixed by Ryan Hafer, and mastered by Grammy award winning Gavin Lurssen (Queens of the Stone Age, Tom Waits), “Go Forth and Multiply” is set for an April 2014 UK release.

British born-and-raised guitarist Robin Davey cut his teeth with theblues elite; jamming onstage with the likes of Buddy Guy, recording with Mick Jagger, and touring the world as a member of British Blues upstarts, The Hoax. Davey quickly secured a place as the youngest ever inductee into the British Blues Hall Of Fame, and has built a reputation as an eclectic and cutting edge musical mind.

Singer Greta Valenti grew up amongst the deep-rooted musical traditions of New Orleans. Having embraced performance and music on stage since the age of four, she emancipated herself at age 17 to tour the USA with a touring performance group, eventually landing in Southern California and become a staple on the local Punk and Indie scenes. Though the two’s early years were spent on opposite sides of the Atlantic, they have both found common ground in their passion for the raw honesty of music, delivered in its most unprocessed and unrestricted form. Having met via a music video competition on YouTube, the pair eventually became an item, and then a band. With a dose of Hendrix, and a nod to PJ Harvey, Well Hung Heart are just as comfortable channeling Nirvana as they are Leadbelly or Led Zeppelin.

Wiretree's fourth album, Get Up, to be released on 19 August

Album release: Get Up by Wiretree
Release date: 19 August 2013
Label: Cobaltworks Music
Listen: on official site

Wiretree began as the solo recording project of singer-songwriter Kevin Peroni. After releasing the LP Bouldin in 2007, Peroni recruited other band members to solidify the project. The group released their sophomore effort Luck in 2009, which made its way to numerous year-end Best Of lists, labeled by Blurt Magazine as their “Best Kept Secret”. The band have since appeared at SXSW, featured on Austin City Limits and toured Europe. This year the band will play China’s biggest music festival, The Strawberry Music Festival, alongside acts like Deerhoof and Travis.

Wiretree’s mission statement for Get Up reads thus: unite diverse songs in a compatible way. Peroni, an Austin native, spent his life listening to music from the UK with The La’s, Radiohead, The Kinks all currying favour while sitting side by side US artists such as Grandaddy and Dylan. Each of these bands influenced what would become this beautiful patchwork album. Take Us Away beats like a Shins comedown, while elsewhere much of the album is guided by the power pop light of Big Star.

It was a conscious decision then to create an album that sounded homegrown and carefree, the general feeling being that too many modern albums are left feeling overly clinical, sterile and precise. The recording process itself was varied. Some songs were recorded live with the whole band (So Bold, To the Moon), other songs recorded alone (Marching Band, When You Were Young). The remaining songs were done in various studios, using different equipment and producers resulting in sonically different approaches to match the writing of each song. Peroni admits that when these new songs were birthed, it wasn’t with the intention of them becoming an album, which perhaps going someway to explain the resulting diversity.

Of the album, Peroni says:

“The album before, I tried using only one producer, I let the band members push the music to more of a rocking sound, and that was good for the time, but it made me want to get back to the roots of how I hear music in my head. I think this new album is one of the most revealing in terms of how I hear and create music in my head.”

For many, such diversity might signal a band yet to discover their true direction. But for Wiretree, now four albums in, their path couldn’t be more clear-cut; write the songs you want to listen to.

“There are traces of Britpop’s cool factor and The Shangri-Las’ lilt and sway” - Under The Radar

Jane's Addiction: Live in NYC - album / DVD out 8 July

Album /DVD  release: Jane’s Addiction: Live In NYC
Release date: 8 July 2013
Label: Capitol / UMC

From the beginning, Jane's Addiction have thrown the most unique parties in rock, mixing a fierce musicality with theatrical flair onstage. 2012 saw the band — who’ve always outrageously combined electricity, sex and danger — return to the stage in support of their acclaimed album The Great Escape Artist (Capitol Records).

Live in NYC was filmed in New York City at Terminal 5 on December 29th, 2012 during a special run of North American shows—called “Theatre of the Escapists”- with the band performing in intimate venues, most of which are classic theatres. The alternative rock pioneers — frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass — captured this immersive theatrical experience on tape and are making available via Live in NYC on multiple formats.

“We chose to play as many of the great theatres that we could find because we wanted to immerse the audience in a unique experience unlike any they have ever seen at a rock show,” said FARRELL in the band’s tour announcement.  “Expect an orgy of musical and visual delights. We like orgies, and hope you do too.”

The album will be released on the following formats: Digital, DVD and Blu-ray (running time 69 mins),  DVD & CD, CD – both with 12 page booklets and sticker and also double vinyl LP – which is the first live vinyl release since 1987's self-titled on Triple X Records.

Track list

  • Whores
  • Ain't No Right
  • Just Because
  • Ted, Just Admit It...
  • Been Caught Stealing

Metallic prog-rock band Arthouse Hours release 'All for One' on July 22

Album release: All for One by Arthouse Hours
Release date: 22 July
Listen: on Bandcamp

Hailing from St Petersburg, Russia, Arthouse Hours set about creating their breed of metallic prog-rock in 2010. Their ascent to the forefront of the city’s alternative music scene was a swift one, in the wake of a first mini-album release (View of Notre Dame) in 2011. Putting the stress of several line-up changes behind them, the band formerly know as Arthouse In Your Waking Hours locked themselves away in their own custom-built studio, charged with the task of writing and recording their sophomore record. All For One is the brutal result. Armed with a hefty cannon of Russian-born riffs, Arthouse Hours step take a giant step towards worldwide recognition with the UK release of the album on July 22.

Citing multi-era heavy rock, prog, industrial and metal influences such as Yes, Converge, Godflesh and The Fall of Troy, Arthouse Hours wield a steady hand at the production desk too, always careful to allow space for them to nod towards their heritage whilst administering their own force on the proceedings. On tracks like Away they are tormented (“Every season, like a prison”), during Heavily Assaulted, they openly burn bridges (“Relegate beloved ones… I can be alone”), whilst on Like This they find solace in Closure (“Farewell my dear friend”).

Thematically, the album centres around an individual under stress. Our protagonist goes through a break up with the object of his desire. He has conflicting thoughts on this, that frequently turn to dreams. He later questions whether he has actually experienced loss, instead acquiring something that is much bigger - a realization dawns that life must go on. On it goes.

Owen to release new album, 'L'Ami du Peuple'

Album release: L'Ami du Peuple by Owen
Label: Polyvinyl
Release date: July 2, 2013
Listen: on Polyvinyl site

The songs Mike Kinsella writes as Owen have always had rock solid lyrical foundations. And on new album, L'Ami du Peuple, the same can be said for the music. Emphasis on the rock.

Anyone vaguely familiar with Kinsella's musical lineage (Cap'n Jazz, American Football, Owls) knows he's far from a one-note musician. And now, he expands his repertoire as a solo songwriter to include a touch of female vocals, pounding drums, and even dueling electric guitar lines that are the closest thing he’s done in tribute to his 80s hair metal obsession.

The variety of sounds featured on L'Ami du Peuple can largely be attributed to a new approach Kinsella took to the writing and recording process. Rather than locking himself in a room with mostly finished song ideas for a couple of weeks before emerging with a finished album, this time Kinsella involved producer Neil Strauch (Iron & Wine, Bonnie 'Prince’ Billy, Andrew Bird) from the very beginning and spaced out recording over a few month period.

This enabled him to naturally bring a different mood or vibe to the material he was working on every time he entered the studio - re-evaluating what had been recorded during the previous session and collaborating with Strauch on the direction new songs should take.

As a result, L'Ami du Peuple sounds markedly different than any album Kinsella has released under the Owen moniker.

From the electronic blips and hand claps that punctuate I Got High to the ragtime piano melody running through Where Do I Begin? each track possesses a unique and surprising identity.

"In the past I've stifled a bunch of my influences and leaned on a couple consistently, but this time I just let each song happen as I heard them and had a lot of fun trying some new things," Kinsella reveals.

The benefits of this "anything goes" mindset are plainly apparent on album centerpiece Bad Blood -- a track propelled by a quasi-country stomp that explodes halfway through with an electric guitar solo before dovetailing into a closing crescendo.

Bad Blood also affirms that lyrically Kinsella remains as raw and personal as ever. As the title suggests, the song finds Kinsella lamenting his pedigree: "Bad blood / Hereditary law you can't run away from / (Trust me, I've tried)."

This focus on familial relationships occurs often, but with the addition of a new angle on top of those Kinsella has adopted previously  Now the parent of two children, Kinsella finds his perspective on life inevitably shifting from being a "son" to being a "father."

This role reversal adds a new dimension to Kinsella's self-examination of his thoughts and fears. As he explains, "Instead of being a son whose father passed away, I've moved on to being the father afraid of passing."

His anxiety at life passing by too quickly is evident on closing track Vivid Dreams: "How long have I been sleeping? / I'm a dad and my dad's dead."

The question he poses doesn't come with an easy answer, but for an artist like Kinsella who is constantly evolving and reinventing himself, death is just an opportunity for rebirth.

James Younger releases new single, Monday Morning - a 'catchy as hell piece of guitar pop'

Single release: Monday Morning by James Younger
Release date: April 29, 2013
Label: Light Organ
Listen: on Soundcloud

James Younger left his home town of Manchester in Britain at the ripe young age of 21 and headed for the States. He hitchhiked across America, dissecting life in conversations with all those he came across and scribbling down stories in a notepad he kept in his breast pocket. These conversations and stories became the seeds that would grow into his debut album of pop/rock anthems, Feelin' American – out on June 25 on Light Organ Records.

Younger’s first single, Monday Morning (the opening track on Feelin’ American) is out now.  Northwest tastemaker station KEXP debuted the track calling it, “A catchy as hell piece of guitar-pop that is a radio classic like the Cars would write.”  The single is backed with What Comes After The Weekend and both are available now on iTunes. You can stream Monday Morning on Soundcloud (and feel free to embed).

New album from Saturday Looks Good To Me

Album release: One Kiss Ends It All by Saturday Looks Good To Me
Release date: 21 May 2013
Label: Polyvinyl
Listen: on Bandcamp

In their decade-plus existence, Saturday Looks Good To Me have never taken a typical path: endless line-up changes, shifts in sound from lo-fi 60’s pop to experimental noise rock, a twisting discography heavy on one-off singles and bizarre package tours with afrobeat and freakfolk bands.

In 2012, bandleader and songwriter Fred Thomas returned with yet another reconfigured band line-up, including new vocalists Carol Catherine and Amber Fellows, but also featuring old friends from previous SLGTM incarnations like bassist Scott DeRoche and drummer Ryan Howard. The band’s fifth proper album, One Kiss Ends It All, came together following the group’s first tour after getting back in action, but the four years since their last full-length weren’t spent cultivating this new batch of songs. Instead, a spontaneous and breezy vibe flows through the album’s 12 selections, drawing on the reference points of 60’s pop and early indie rock, all filtered through the band’s skewed pop lens.

Thomas’ songs are always bittersweet, but short, uptempo rockers like Invisible Friend and Break In recall the open-hearted running melodicism of New Zealand kiwi-pop while more groove-oriented numbers like Polar Bear or Sunglasses meld electronic elements with the same sharp-edged attitude of the first Strokes album. Even former SLGTM lead vocalist Betty Barnes (who now lives in Sweden) sings lead on two tracks: the doo-wop piano lament of Negative Space and the spare indie rock road trip The Ever-present New Times Condition.

Saturday Looks Good To Me’s albums from the early 2000’s (All Your Summer Songs, Every Night) predicted the reverb-saturated production and girl-group revisitations that indie rock would embrace several years down the road. One Kiss Ends It All expands on those early lo-fi marvels and feels more like a revelation than a continuance. With more sophisticated arrangements and melodies more direct and engaging than anything the band has ever done, the album feels like re-telling the details of a dream minutes after waking. Something new colliding with something that shouldn’t make sense in a beautifully strange collage. And always more details hidden in the corners.

Dark, dirty, psychedelic rock from acclaimed band The Lost Souls Club - and a UK tour

EP Release and tour: High Noon by The Lost Souls Club
Release date: 25 February 2013
Listen: on official website
Video link: Shoot Me Down

“Romeo has a great opening riff and vocal line. The lyrical themes are suitably noir…so they sit alongside bands like The White Stripes and The Black Keys….and look like a junior Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds” – Simon Price, The Independent

“Perfect to soundtrack both wild Friday nights of excess and the gloomy sad Sundays that always follow, the likes of Kiss Away The Sun and Romeo are monochromatic slices of life that retrace and then reinvent those such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Raveonettes who came before them. The guitars are fuzzy, the vocals sleazy, the songs themselves urgent and paranoid, almost as if they’re scared of the impending sunrise. It’s thrilling stuff.” - Mischa Pearlman (Kerrang / Clash / Record Collector)

“Their dark, pulsing rock swirls with a sinister malice that sets the tone perfectly...” – Kerrang

“The Lost Souls Club may be a musical home for the heartbroken and dreamers, but on this showing I think they'll very soon need to start booking larger venues in which to hold their meetings, as they are about to explode.” – Uber Rock

"With hints of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Jesus and Mary Chain, as well as NIN-edge that remains, there’s a real intensity that really makes it hard to turn away. There’s something dark and wrong going on here, but at the same time its irresistible… you just want to reach out and touch it." – Pure Rawk

Hailed by The Independent’s music guru Simon Price as the band to fill The White Stripes’ empty shoes, The Lost Souls Club are a UK band who play rock as it should be: dark, dirty and energized with a psychedelic twist. With reverb, fuzz and massive hooks the band belong with the likes of The Dead Weather, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Jesus and The Mary Chain.

The band’s sinister rock is perfect for a long drive through the night along a lonely road with nothing but heartache for company, but they also have a musical alter ego – a brooding acoustic side that is just as thrilling as their rock'n'roll, with a naked intensity that echoes the sounds of Nick Cave and Johnny Cash.

Having just signed to JL Booking agency (Nine Black Alps, Spotlight Kid, Passenger), The Lost Souls Club are now are touring High Noon, their debut EP, which has already picked up glowing reviews in the UK and in Asia and Australia (where they toured in 2012). The theme running through the EP – from which the ‘High Noon’ title originates – is the idea of a showdown between two opposing sides of oneself: arrogance and insecurity. The mirrored image on the cover echoes this idea of duality.

High Noon was self-produced and recorded, apart from opening track, Romeo which was produced by the eminent Sam Bell (Editors, REM, Bloc Party). With BBC Introducing already hailing them as a ‘Band to Watch’ in 2013, this year is set to be a big one for The Lost Souls Club.

Eric Burdon: 'Til Your River Runs Dry - his most personal album to date

Album release: 'Til Your River Runs Dry by Eric Burdon
Release date: 1 April 2013
Label: ABKCO
Listen: on Youtube

Eric Burdon has completed his most personal album to date, 'Til Your River Runs Dry; it will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally on April 1 by ABKCO Records. Water, the debut single from the album, will be released to radio. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” Burdon has long forged new ground while maintaining a commanding presence in music - as front man of The Animals, with WAR at its inception and, simply, as Eric Burdon.

'Til Your River Runs Dry is a collection of 12 songs, most of which were written by Eric. The album's title reflects Eric's lifelong passion to “express his own truth.” The result is a deeply intimate, honest self-portrait, as well as an unsparing look, through his eyes, at religion, politics and the environment.

Many of the song titles reflect Eric’s continuing concerns, addressing the topics that he finds most urgent, intriguing and important.

Produced by Eric Burdon and Tony Braunagel, the new album was recorded at Playback Studios in Santa Barbara, at Ultratone Recording in Studio City (where Eric recorded his last two albums, My Secret Life and Soul of a Man), and in New Orleans, where Eric feels most closely connected to his original, musical roots. The album was mixed by Ed Cherney and mastered by Doug Sax and Eric Boulanger at The Mastering Lab in Ojai, California.

Also on Eric Burdon’s musical agenda this year is a special collection celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Animals. This exciting package will pay tribute to one of the British Invasion’s most groundbreaking bands whose soulful ferocity resonates to this day. It will be released by ABKCO Records later this year.

Aside from his musical endeavors, Eric is also working on a memoir, a follow-up to his first two autobiographies, I Used to Be An Animal, But I'm Alright Now and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

Having just signed with Paquin Entertainment Group for booking, Eric has already hit the ground running in 2013. He will be performing near you in the coming months. Following back surgery last summer, Eric is feeling rested, recharged and ready to rock and is excited to get out on the road and share his new music with his fans.

City Reign announce live dates and new single, 'Making Plans'

Single release: Making Plans by City Reign
Release date: 25 February 2013
Label: Car Boot
Listen: on official site

Manchester indie rockers, City Reign, have announced the first single, Making Plans, from their forthcoming debut album Another Step. The single follows taster tracks the band offered as free downloads, Ahead of Ideas and Retaliate.

Ahead Of Ideas propelled them on a UK tour and led to Clash Magazine asking them to open their inaugural issue launch gig in Manchester, recognising them as “one of the best new young bands to follow.”

The band teamed up with Manchester-based producer Sam Jones (Alex Turner) for the album, who took the band into Sacred Trinity Church in Salford to record. Jones chose the church for its rich natural reverb, which helped to bring depth to the band’s classic guitar sound.

The sound builds on the raw energy and exciting promise of the early demos, including the demo version of Making Plans which caught the ears of Steve Lamacq and The Independent in late 2011.

City Reign are song-writing pair Chris Bull and Mike Grice with Duncan Bolton on drums.

The album, Another Step, is due for release the same day (25th February).

David Bronson Celebrates Release of 'Story' with 2 new videos and free downloads

‘If you like well-produced, catchy, decent guitar playing and solid vocals then you’ll like this.’ – Gold Flake Paint

After a number of years of writing, producing, and recording, David Bronson officially releases the first instalment of a 22-song cycle project, The Long Lost Story, in the UK. Story is the first album, out now, to be followed by The Long Lost later in the year. To celebrate the occasion, Bronson gives away two free downloads of tracks from the record, accompanied by beautifully intimate new videos.

Bronson on the tracks

"Easier is a very reflective kind of song, roughly narrating some of the story of the record, in a hopeful, if kind of wary way. It's a detached retelling of what had happened that was painful, as well as a kind of attempt at a self-prescribed 'remedy' on how to proceed forward.

Since the song is an extremely internal one, even moreso than the rest of the record, I wanted a very intimate feeling for the video, so I thought "what would be more intimate than shooting it by myself, at home?" So that's what I did. I also realized the other day that it's kind of a funny play on words - it was after all, from a technical standpoint, a much 'easier' video to make than some of the other ones. I like when things like that happen.”

Momentary has a chorus that to me is a universal message, a message that I acutely needed to hear when I wrote it. It was essentially me telling myself that things would get better, but also acknowledging that they’d likely worse again too, and that’s just how it is (and that that’s not necessarily a bad thing). On another level, it’s ultimately an acknowledgement of death, and as such is an implied admonition to really value and be supremely grateful for all of it – that it’s all part of it, and all beautiful and meaningful, both in spite of, and because of, its impermanence. It’s also a special song to me personally because it’s the one song on the two records that was co-written by my brother Jeremy (who’s also the drummer).

As far as the video is concerned – I’ve always had a deep love and appreciation for illustration, from a very young age being obsessed with comic books. So I wrote out a few rough, sort of allegorical outlines and began looking for illustrators. I literally came across David Sparshott by googling ‘Illustrator’. I was really drawn to his style, as I was looking for a somewhat particular line-drawn, monochromatic kind of thing. His pieces were cooler and more boldly idiosyncratic and technically beautiful than I had imagined. I’m thrilled with his interpretation.”

New double A side single from Syd Arthur

Single release: double A-side from Syd Arthur, Ode To The Summer / Edge of The Earth
Release date: 11 March
Label: Dawn Chorus Recording Company
Listen: on official website

Praise for debut album On An On

'Dorothy begins with a calmative wash of heat-have guitars, then cedes to a lazy, joined at the hip groove that's a small marvel of poise and subtlety.... Enchanting' - Mojo

‘Dizzyingly intricate… they bristle with energy and ideas’ - Q

‘Strong compositional ideas… a careering piece’ - Uncut

‘Absurdly talented’ - Word

‘Syd Arthur are sons and heirs of those Canterbury musicians who did sometimes whimsical, sometimes intense things with psychedelic and progressive rock’ - The Guardian

‘Staggeringly good. It will take something exceptional to beat On An On to Prog Album Of The Year’ - Classic Rock

When Syd Arthur emerged in 2012 with their debut, self-recorded, self-produced, self released album On An On, it didn’t take long for them to meet with critical acclaim. Hailed as natural successors to Canterbury’s famous folk-prog sound, they not only connected with fans of Caravan, Soft Machine and Gong, but with fans of contemporary artists like Tame Impala, Devendra Banhart and Wolf People. Rave reviews across Q, Mojo, Uncut and The Guardian followed. With the release of the single Dorothy in late 2012, the band had their first taste of UK radio support, scoring plays across Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM, Amazing Radio, NME Radio, Q Radio and more.

Greatly inspired by the sonic pioneers of the late 60s and early 70s, they have patiently learned how to engineer, produce and mix themselves, using an innovative hybrid of analogue and digital techniques. They seamlessly mix bucolic, retro reveries, devastating blasts of precision controlled riffing, sweeping folk, fleet-fingered mandolin work and a musical vocabulary that’s as fluently conversant with world music as it is the time signature twists of many progressive artists.

The band then finished their 2012 with a sell out headline show at Communion’s club night at The Wilmington Arms, recorded a live session for Daytrotter, were invited by Qthemusic.com to write an in depth blog on world music and received a full page ‘High Hopes’ feature from Classic Rock (who also included Edge of The Earth as one of their Best Tracks of 2012). On Boxing Day, Paul Weller and Bradley Wiggins presented a Radio 2 show of their favourite songs, during which Weller picked Ode To The Summer. He also talked the band up in Uncut magazine in their My Life In Music column (Dec 2012) and even invited them to support him live in Europe.

It’s live that Syd Arthur really continue to impress: their intricate, high-energy live sets, which to date include Glastonbury and Secret Garden slots, have resulted in a large following emerging - one that is also blossoming in Europe as they continue to pick up tours in France, Belgium, The Netherlands and most recently Italy. For their latest dates, please see below.

Lost Souls: new single / video 'Black Eyes' out on January 21

Single / video releaseBlack Eyes by Lost Souls
Listen / watch: on Youtube

“Their sound is unique in the true sense of the word. Fusing a traditional Brit-rock sound with elements of electronica to create a sound no one has heard on a national scale.” — BBC Introducing

Lost Souls, an electro-rock'n'roll 5 piece from Lincoln, are releasing a ruthless new track, Black Eyes, with an honourably rebellious art core video to match.

"Our videos are important to us, being descriptive of our songs but always in a way that's subjective to the listener/viewer. Do we know too much or nowhere near enough? Black Eyes puts the question to you pointing out some observational references that may seem pro conspiracy? Or could they just be word interplay?

"We tend to pitch our collective viewpoint through an abstraction filter, so what we write is suggestive, rather than a force-fed opinion. There are maybe some things you should question about the world around you and there is every reason to pursue the notion that all is not what it looks to be. Don't be fed every opinion you have. Go out and find your own"

The early Lost Soul’s sound could easily have been described as a postmodern, Manchester-inspired acknowledgement; the electronic influences, as well as the image and language of the band's key lieutenants often alluded to the 90’s baggy cultural references. It was perhaps the second EP’s title, Hidden In Plain Sight though that gave the game away - this wasn’t just a self styled Manchester influenced band, this was in fact a band with much more clout in song-craft and musical chemistry than they were given credit for.

Lost Souls have since moved away and detached themselves from that place in a very short space of time, quickly picking up fans at their commanding live gigs as well as moving on sonically to a place of their own making, which shows how quickly a band can hit the spot when all the elements come together naturally.

Lost Souls are Sam Warner (vocals), Michael Mckiernan (bass), Tommie Wincott (electronics), Tom Wilkins (drums) & Andy Brown (guitar).

A renegade rock and blues album - Gwyn Ashton's "Radiogram"

Album Release: Radiogram by Gwyn Ashton
Release date: 22 October 2012
Label: Fab Tone
Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXG7i3ki4Io

Guitar maestro Gwyn Ashton’s back with Radiogram, a hard-driving renegade rock and blues album heaving with hook-laden songs and killer riffs.

A truly accomplished master of electric, acoustic and slide guitars, singer / songwriter / guitarist Ashton was voted third place as "Guitarist of The Year 2001" by French readers of Guitar Part magazine, behind Jeff Beck and Gary Moore at number one and two. Italian company Liutart has recently released the Gwyn Ashton signature model guitar, designed to his own specifications.

Radiogram boasts nine self-penned tracks plus a phat groove version of Willie Dixon’s I Just Wanna Make Love To You with the Ashton trademark stamped all over it. This feast of electric blues, heavy funk and melodic rock has been inspired by his well-worn vinyl record collection and sounds like it could have been recorded in 1971. Old-school retro is in and nobody does it better.

The rhythm section on Radiogram features Ashton (also on bass) along with stalwart drummer Kev Hickman, who has been the backbone of Ashton’s European touring duo for the past three years. The diverse guest artist roster includes Don Airey (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath), Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Robbie Blunt (Robert Plant, Bronco, Silverhead), Johnny Mastro (LA’s Mama’s Boys), Mark Stanway (Magnum, Phil Lynott) and Mo Birch (UB40, Go West, Culture Club). Radiogram was recorded in England, mixed in LA by Lost Prophets’ producer Justin Hopfer and mastered in Australia by Don Bartley, who was recently commissioned by EMI to remaster the audiophile version of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Radiogram is the follow-up to 2009’s Two-Man Blues Army. Dixiefrog released Prohibition in 2006 with guests Chris Glen, Ted McKenna (Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Ian Gillan, Rory Gallagher) and Don Airey. In 1999 Virgin France released Fang It! which was recorded with Rory Gallagher’s rhythm section - Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O’Neill. Ashton’s first two albums Feel The Heat and Beg, Borrow & Steel were recorded in Australia and released through Virgin France in 1997 and 1998. In 2000 Feel The Heat and Fang It! were simultaneously in the Amazon France Top 100 album charts. They also garnered Ashton European support slots with the likes of B.B. King, Johnny Winter, The Yardbirds, Mick Taylor, Peter Green and Status Quo.

The Finest Hour - indie, ska and rock come together to produce fantastic debut

Album release: These Are The Good Old Days by The Finest Hour
Release date: 1 October 2012
Listen: http://thefinesthour.bandcamp.com/

“Absolutely brilliant.” - BBC Raw Talent

“The guys mix flavours of indie, rock and ska vibes to produce infectious grooves with terrace anthem lyrics carrying a veiled social comment.” - AltSounds

This impressive debut album from The Finest Hour is packed full of confidence, ambition and an energetic trip through several different musical genres.

With its big chorus, overdriven guitar and cymbal smashing drum tracks, the opening track Never Heard of Dylan highlights the band’s ability to play feel-good summer rock; later on in the album, tracks like Pocket Change showcase the wider range of influences behind the album, which manages to take in punk, ska and spirited anthemic rock whilst still maintaining a solid coherence throughout and delivering consistently strong melodies.

Based in the Cleethorpes/Grimsby area of Lincolnshire, The Finest Hour draw their influence from indie, punk, ska and folk. They have toured the UK extensively, playing alongside the likes of Neville Staple, Chris Helme & The Yards, Mystery Jets, Orphan Boy, and Zane Lowe. The band's taste in venue is as diverse as their taste in music – recent gigs included a set on an ice-cream parlour roof; a 4am performance in a Travelodge at King Cross; and a concert in the kitchen of a halls of residence in Salford.

In the build-up to the release, the band recently released a free download of the opening track Never Heard Of Dylan (available from their Bandcamp page) and picked up airplay from John Kennedy at XFM.

This record not only showcases what The Finest Hour can emulate, but also gives clear insight into the direction in which they want to head. These Are The Good Old Days offers a fine introduction to their music, and bags of promise.

The band will be playing a promotional tour throughout September playing eight dates:
