HOLLYWOOD, CA – Capitol Records is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Martin Scorsese’s award-winning documentary 'No Direction Home: Bob Dylan', by releasing a Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition of the film on October 28th that will mark its first release on Blu-ray (standard DVD is also available).  These 10th Anniversary Editions of the film all feature 2 1/2 hours of bonus and never-before-seen content, including extended scenes from the film and full-length interviews with Scorsese, Dave van Ronk and Liam Clancy.

Both formats are also available in a Special Edition Deluxe Box that will include both Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film and bonus content, as well as an exclusively produced Bob Dylan magazine that features reproductions of historical articles about the artist, plus three high-quality lithographic photo prints of Dylan, all in a deluxe portfolio.

All configurations of 'No Direction Home' are available for pre-order at the official No Direction Home Store, and will be available for purchase on Amazon.com on October 28 and for pre-order in the weeks leading up to that date.  Retailer Best Buy will also carry an exclusive Blu-ray that includes a limited edition Bob Dylan poster with all purchases.  Digital versions of the film will be available for download at iTunes and other digital HD retailers on October 25, and will be available for rental on November 8 and streaming on November 22.  A newly-produced trailer for this release can be viewed here.

Produced by Jeff Rosen (American Roots Music) and Nigel Sinclair (The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years),  along with Susan Lacy (American Masters) and Anthony Wall (BBC Arena), the 3 ½-hour film focuses on Dylan’s life and music from 1961 to 1966, detailing the artist’s journey from his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota through his emergence in the folk music scene of New York’s Greenwich Village to his controversial decision to go “electric” and his rise to the pinnacle of international fame and cultural impact.   No Direction Home: Bob Dylan features rare performance footage and interviews with artists and musicians whose lives intertwined with Dylan’s during this era, while Dylan himself talks openly and extensively about this critical period in his career in interviews shot exclusively for this film.

The film features rare treasures from Dylan’s extensive film, tape and photograph collection, including footage from Murray Lerner’s film Festival documenting Dylan’s performances at the 1963, 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, previously unreleased outtakes from D.A. Pennebaker’s famed 1967 documentary Don’t Look Back, and interviews with Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur, and many others.

The film met with enthusiastic audience reception and universal critical acclaim when it first premiered on PBS, BBC and other prestigious international outlets in the autumn of 2005 and simultaneously released on DVD.  Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun Times, “[The film] creates a portrait that is deep, sympathetic, perceptive and yet finally leaves Dylan shrouded in mystery, which is where he properly lives.”  Frazier Moore of Associated Press called it, “a film I recommend not only to Dylan devotees and neophytes alike, but also to anyone trying to reconnect with where America was then, and grasp where it is today.”  The Hollywood Reporter’s Glenn Abel wrote that the film was, “as good as it gets in music documentaries,” while Variety’s Phil Gallo predicted that “some of the footage will startle even the most dedicated Dyalnologists.”

'No Direction Home: Bob Dylan'; A Martin Scorsese Picture is a production of Spitfire Pictures, Grey Water Park Production, Thirteen/WNET New York and Sikelia Productions, in co-production with Vulcan Productions, BBC and NHK.

James Brown: Best of Live at the Apollo - 50th Anniversary

Album release: Best of Live at The Apollo - 50th Anniversary by James Brown
Release date: 24 June 2013
Label: Universal

This unique, 12-track album celebrates 50 years since the release of James Brown’s classic 1963 live album, Live At The Apollo, and showcases his many great performances recorded at the iconic Los Angeles venue. Brown, who would have reached his 80th birthday on 3 May 2013, first arrived at the Apollo in April 1959 as an opening act for Little Willie John, one of his idols. He wasn’t to remain an opener for long and “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business” would play the Apollo, Los Angeles more than 600 times during his career.

This title comprises 12 tracks from James Brown’s three landmark albums recorded at the historic venue: Live At The Apollo (recorded 1962, released 1963), Live At The Apollo Vol. II (recorded 1967, released 1968) and Revolution of the Mind: Recorded Live At The Apollo Vol. III (recorded and released 1971). Additionally, this set includes two unreleased tracks taken from the album, Get Down at The Apollo with The J.B.’s: Live At The Apollo Vol. IV – recorded in September 1972 but ultimately never released.

Personally funded by James Brown, the original, critically acclaimed Live At The Apollo, featuring the Famous Flames and the James Brown Orchestra, was first released in 1963 and became a cultural phenomenon, reaching No. 2 on The Billboard 200 album chart. In 2003 it was listed at No. 24 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time and in 2004, Live At The Apollo was added to the Library Of Congress’ National Recording Registry. Three tracks from this landmark recording, I’ll Go Crazy, Try Me and Night Train, plus the famous show introduction, are featured here.

Recorded in June 1967, Live At The Apollo Vol. II was released in 1968 and ushered in Brown’s new funky style with a larger, more sophisticated incarnation of the James Brown Orchestra, featuring Maceo Parker and led by Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis. This was Brown’s first live, double-LP set and charted at No. 2 on the R&B Album chart and Top 40 on The Billboard 200. Three tracks from this recording that feature on the new celebratory release are, the live hit single There Was A Time, Cold Sweat and Please, Please, Please, documenting the constant evolution of Soul Brother No. 1.

Revolution Of The Mind: Recorded Live At The Apollo Vol. III
, a double-LP from 1971, is Brown’s third official live album recorded at the venue and features the backing band Fred Wesley & The J.B.’s. Revolution Of The Mind went to No. 7 on the R&B Albums chart and No. 39 on The Billboard 200. Three tracks from the album, the super-hot Sex Machine, Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved and Soul Power are featured on this best of.

Get Down At The Apollo with The J.B.’s was recorded for a potential double-album and was to feature the J.B.’s as well as James Brown Revue singer Lyn Collins. It was mixed for LP but its release was cancelled. Best Of Live At The Apollo includes two songs from the album, the instrumental Hot Pants Road and There It Is, in new mixes exclusive to this collection.

Top Deck presents 'Ska Vocalists' and 'Ska Instrumentals'

Album releases: Top Deck presents Ska Instrumentals and Ska Vocalists
Label: Universal / Spectrum
Release date: 24 June 2013

Ska Instrumentals

After forming the ‘Top Deck’ sound system with his brother Ivan, Phillip ‘Justin’ Yap launched his label of the same name in 1962. Initial releases by local vocal acts sold moderately, but the following year, he made it into the big time with popular 45s featuring the  leading trumpeter, Baba Brooks. Over the next few years, up until his departure for the US in 1966, the young producer’s run of hits continued, due in no small part to his employment of the exceptional talents of Jamaica’s number one band, the Skatalites.

The very best of the group’s recordings, along with the remainder of Yap’s instrumental output throughout the Ska era is collected on a 40 track 2 CD set, Ska Instrumentals. Alongside the hits are numerous lesser-known gems and alternate cuts featuring the very best of Jamaica’s Jazz-trained musicians, thus illustrating why Top Deck is today widely associated with the very best in original Ska.

Ska Vocalists

In 1962, teenage entrepreneur, Phillip ‘Justin’ Yap entered the ruthless world of the Jamaican music business when he launched the Top Deck label. Over the ensuing years, he established a reputation as one as being one the island’s finest producers, issuing material by a variety of Kingston-based acts, from established stars like Jackie Opel to up and coming performers, such as Larry Marshall and the Angelic Brothers.

Top Deck remained one of Jamaica’s leading labels throughout the Ska era, and the run of hits only ended after Yap emigrated to the US in 1966. The Ska Vocals 2 CD collection brings together the very best in the label’s vocal recordings, from the earliest singles by Joe G. Henry, through to the hugely collectable works of Barbadian-born singer, Jackie Opel.

Today Top Deck is widely considered one the great Ska labels of all time and this set, along with the complimentary Top Deck Presents Ska Instrumentals illustrates just why!

Huey Lewis and The News - 'Sports' 30th anniversary edition out 13 May

Album reissue: Sports by Huey Lewis and The News (Deluxe Edition)
Release date: 13 May 2013
Label: Universal
Listen: on official website

Huey Lewis and The News' 1983 Sports album spawned four Top 10 hit singles (and another that cracked the Top 20), iconic music videos, and sold almost 10 million copies. To celebrate the blockbuster album's 30th anniversary, Lewis has personally overseen an expanded commemorative edition, to be released May 13th by UMG. Digitally remastered for CD and standard and high definition digital audio, Sports (30th Anniversary Edition) pairs each of the original album's nine songs with choice live versions on a second disc, many of which have never before been released.

The special edition includes an expanded booklet with photos and memorabilia from the band's archive and new liner notes by music journalist and author Gary Graff.

Says Huey, “We’ve always been very proud of the record and it’s going to be a blast to play it all live!”

Sports is on the cusp of RIAA Diamond Award sales certification with U.S. sales approaching 10 million copies. Self-produced by the band, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and ranked No. 2 on Billboard's year-end sales chart for 1984, second only to Michael Jackson's Thriller. Lewis created indelible music videos for each of the four Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits on Sports - If This Is It, the Gold-certified I Want A New Drug, Heart And Soul and The Heart Of Rock & Roll, which won the year's GRAMMY Award for Best Long-Form Music Video - as well as the Top 20 single, Walking On A Thin Line.

Sports was also an international success, with Top 40 chart peaks in several countries, including the UK, Canada, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, and Norway.

Huey Lewis and The News performed a hit from Sports on ABC's Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday, April 2 and will also perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, May 15.  Additional TV appearances will be announced soon.

In May, the band will launch the "Sports 30th Anniversary Tour" across North America, performing the album in its entirety. For more information on this, please visit www.hueylewisandthenews.com.

The Teardrop Explodes: 'Wilder' reissued as expanded two-disc edition

Albm re-issue: Wilder by The Teardrop Explodes
Release date: June 24th 2013
Label: Mercury / Universal Music Catalogue

Wilder was the second and final album by The Teardrop Explodes, originally released in November 1981 and a radical, post-punk classic that’s ripe for reappraisal. Ambitious, colourful and catchy and with more ideas at play than most groups could conjure up in a lifetime, like so many great albums, it simply confused people in its audacity.

At the start of the year, Reward had given the Teardrops their only Top Ten hit but amidst all the publicity that always surrounded the group, Wilder reached only a disappointing 29 in the charts. The first extracted single Passionate Friend, despite two appearances on Top of the Pops, barely scraped into the Top 30. Within a year of Wilder’s release, the group had split up.

This new edition features the original album in all its glory, plus a second disc compiled and sequenced by Julian Cope containing all the related singles, B-sides and BBC radio sessions. Cope also provides a track by track guide while Dave Balfe, the Teardrops’ original keyboard player, foil and sometime nemesis to Cope, along with guitarist Troy Tate provide further notes; Balfe’s essay is a particularly honest and revealing account of the recording process.

Disc two is effectively an alternative version of the album, the BBC sessions presenting many key songs in a noticeably different form, closer to how the group used to play them live. One the eve of recording Wilder, bassist Alfie Agius and keyboard player Jeff Hammer (both of whom play on the radio sessions) were jettisoned, leaving only Cope, ever-faithful drummer Gary Dwyer and guitarist Tate. Dave Balfe then returned, whereupon he and Cope proceeded to rearrange virtually every song with a much greater emphasis on synths and experimentation, and with a far more downbeat complexion than the well-crafted psychedelic pop that was their trademark.

The radio sessions also include songs which didn’t make it on to the album; Cope’s take on John Cale’s I’m Not The Loving Kind and the powerful Screaming Secrets, a live tour de force which the group never nailed in the studio. Cope would eventually record it for St Julian.

Disc two also rounds up the B-sides to the three singles taken from Wilder: the infectious Passionate Friend, the punchy, brass-led Colours Fly Away, and the exquisitely plaintive Tiny Children, plus the non-album single You Disappear From View, a last-ditch reversion to the Reward formula, released in 1983 after the group had split up. It’s a rich and varied selection including the more challenging Christ Vs Warhol and Window Shopping For A New Crown Of Thorns, the charming, atypical Rachel Built A Steamboat, Suffocate (a re-recorded version of the song which only appeared on the US version of Kilimanjaro) and a full-on, live Sleeping Gas, recorded at Club Zoo.

Amidst the disbelief and surprise at Wilder’s poor showing, Club Zoo was an outrageously excess all areas six week stint at the tiny Pyramid Club in Liverpool featuring the Wilder line up of Cope, Balfe, Dwyer and Tate plus new bassist Ronnie Francois. Designed to break in the new band, it was more a dress rehearsal for the American tour that followed - a fraught, drug-fuelled disaster which saw the group unravel to a point from which they never really recovered.

Few groups promised as much as The Teardrop Explodes in those heady post-punk days; even fewer groups scaled the same dizzy creative heights. Wilder was their mountain top.

Public Enemy: 25th Anniversary Vinyl Collection released

Vinyl collection release: Public Enemy, 25th Anniversary Collection

Public Enemy are one of the most influential, controversial and radical hip hop groups of all time. True pioneers, the band revolutionised hardcore rap in the late 80’s with a trailblazing blend of political themes and innovative music production.

With a militant outlook and lyrical content condoning revolutionary action and social activism, Public Enemy initially gathered much controversy but soon won widespread acclaim to be regarded as the most influential band of their time.

Public Enemy remain true hip hop legends, marking their landmark 25-year career achievement with a nomination to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

'Pop Art' and 'Velveteen': reissues from Transvision Vamp

Reissues (2CD sets): Pop Art and Velveteen by Transvision Vamp
Release date: 25 March 2013
Label: Universal

Late March sees the release of Transvision Vamp’s first two highly successful album releases from the late 1980s, Pop Art and Velveteen. The albums are being released as 2-CD sets, each featuring a bonus disc of B-sides and rarities.

Signing to MCA in 1986, British rock-pop act Transvision Vamp enjoyed massive chart success in the UK and abroad before disbanding in early 1992. In late 1987 they released a cover version of the Holly and the Italians song, Tell That Girl To Shut Up; a few months later their follow-up single, I Want Your Love, made number 5 in the UK charts. Their debut album, Pop Art was released in October of that year, reaching the British Top 5.

Pop Art was Transvision Vamp’s debut album and is celebrating its 25th anniversary with this 2CD re-issue. Led by the forthright Wendy James, backed up by the songwriting of Nick Sayer and musical muscle of Dave Parsons and Tex Axile, the band provided a splendid antidote to the Stock-Aitken-Waterman dominated pop charts of the late 80s. In the brief finger of time after the breakthrough of acid house and before Madchester, the group brought some old-fashioned punk sparkle to the charts.

The album’s big single I Want Your Love was perfection itself – big, brash, stupid, loud, funny, clumsy, short, spiky, and became a huge hit.  With its snarling guitars and punk rush, it all seemed incredibly exciting, certainly to teenage audiences who had missed out on new wave the first time around.

Pop Art was released in October 1988 and reached No. 4 on the UK charts, where it spent 32 weeks. This expanded edition, through all its mixes, BBC sessions and B-sides demonstrates how hard the group worked and how much intelligence went into their 15 minutes of fame. It was a bold start for a group that were destined for big things and had the chutzpah to put their money where their mouth was.

With its hatful of influences and a barrel load of swagger, Velveteen is the absolute definitive article for the group: 1989 was the group’s high-water mark. Singles were stripped off it and it cruised to the UK No. 1 album slot.

Baby, I Don’t Care was the first single with its cheeky appropriation of the Troggs’ Wild Thing riff and signalled the group’s brief imperial phase. It was a superb hard rocker, full of the requisite joie de vivre of a band achieving their goals.  This was followed by The Only One, bright, synthesizer driven pop; Landslide Of Love, a tremendous Phil Spector homage; and Born To Be Sold, their ultimate list song, stating how artists from Elvis to Margot Fonteyn were there to be sold, and culminated with James singing Sayer’s words that she was going to make her own history.

Velveteen was released in June 1989. It was big, bold, brash, a bit daft, funny and exhilarating, all the things that rock’n’roll is supposed to be.  And Transvision Vamp had rock’n’roll in spades.

Today, with all its bonuses, session material and b-sides, it is a vibrant flashback to when Transvision Vamp were there at the cutting edge, with all the exuberance, passion, anger and naïveté that pop breakthrough acts possess.

Julian Cope - deluxe edition of St Julian out 4 February

Album reissue: St Julian by Julian Cope
Release date: 4 February 2013
Label: Universal

Saint Julian was the first album recorded by Julian Cope for Island Records, following his two albums on the Mercury label.

Encouraged by his new manager, Cope changed his image: cutting his hair, wearing rocker’s leathers and embracing a "Rock God" perspective (as well as investing in a bizarre climbable microphone stand (with integral steps).

To record and tour the album, Cope put together a new backing group, this featured lead guitarist Donald Ross Skinner and drummer Chris Whitten and James Eller (who’d played alongside Cope on the second Teardrop Explodes album, Wilder) and Cope himself on vocals and rhythm guitar. For the album, Cope also played keyboards under the alias of "Double DeHarrison".

Several songs on the album originated from much earlier than the others. Screaming Secrets had been a Teardrop Explodes song which never made it to album, while Spacehopper dated back to late 1970s writing sessions with Ian McCulloch.

The album’s new songs abandoned the collapsing psychedelic styles of Fried in favour of a crisp, punchier and more structured sound, drawing partially on Cope’s professed love for Detroit heavy rock acts such as early Alice Cooper.

Early sessions were supervised by Ramones producer Ed Stasium and delivered the songs World Shut Your Mouth (which became Cope’s biggest solo hit, reaching #19 in the UK in 1986), Pulsar and Spacehopper. The remaining album sessions were produced by Warne Livesey. The parent album was well received and generated two more singles (Trampolene and Eve’s Volcano).

This deluxe version of the album contains all the B-side and remixes which have been sequenced by Julian himself. With notes by Ian Harrison and updated art this is a great testament to one of Julian Cope's best and most-loved albums.

Featuring Dennis Greaves (guitar, vocals), Mark Feltham (harmonica, vocals), Peter Clark (bass, vocals) and Mickey (Stix) Burkley, the show was originally only released as a 14-track 12” vinyl LP, and didn’t include the 7 bonus tracks featured here as The Encore. These have never been available on CD before, making this the first time that the entire show has been made commercially available. In addition, all 21 tracks have been newly remastered in partnership with the band.

The package also includes a very special bonus DVD featuring live footage from the concert, all of which has never been commercially released before.

The album’s accompanying booklet includes sleeve notes from various band members and others associated with Nine Below Zero, as well as a selection of exclusive rare photographs.

Level 42: Running in the Family, 25th Anniversary Edition

Album release: Level 42, Running In The Family – 25th Anniversary Edition
Release date: 8 October 2012
Label: Universal

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Level 42’s double-platinum hit album Running In The Family, Universal Music are proud to announce the reissues of the album in Box Set, Deluxe Edition and standard formats on October 8 2012. The album’s reissue campaign will coincide with an 18-date ‘Level 42: Running In The Family UK Tour’ throughout October.

Running In The Family was Level 42’s seventh LP and, following its release on 28th March 1987, became the group’s most successful album, peaking at #2 during a 54 week stay in the UK album charts. It also produced five UK hit singles: Lessons in Love (#3, May 1986), Running in the Family (#6, February 1987), To Be With You Again (#10, April 1987), It's Over (#10, September 1987), and Children Say (#22 Dec 1987). The album’s success in the UK was mirrored across Europe, with the album reaching #1 in Holland, where all five singles became Top 10 hits, while Lessons in Love reached #1 in Germany, Switzerland and Denmark.

The reissue of Running In The Family will appear across three different packages; a 4-disc box set, a 2-CD Deluxe Edition and a remastered 1- CD & digital download of the original album. The box set will include the remastered original album and 12” mixes, plus a second disc titled Running In The Family - acoustic re-interpretations 25 years on…, featuring exclusive tracks recorded recently by Level 42’s singer & bassist Mark King. Disc 3 features the band’s celebrated live concert at Wembley Arena in 1987 and, for the time on DVD, Disc 4 contains the documentary Fait Accompli: Onstage Offstage Backstage, documenting a year in the life of Level 42. The DVD is complete by the promo videos for Lessons In Love, Running In The Family, To Be With You Again, It’s Over, Children Say and Fashion Fever.

The box set will also come complete with 5 x A5 prints (4 x band members and a replica original tour flyer), a replica 28 page tour programme, a 40 page book featuring photos, memorabilia and a new interview with Mark King.

Speaking in July 2012 about the box set’s acoustic recordings, Mark King said, "Having the opportunity to re-visit the songs of an album that meant so much to me, and re-interpret them with the benefit of 25 years hindsight, was a real pleasure. The only rules I gave myself were that I should play them all on an acoustic guitar. I nearly succeeded. I hope you enjoy the 'new' old stuff."

Regarding the inclusion of Fait Accompli for the first time on DVD, Mark added, “Fait Accompli combines all the elements that made Level 42 one of the world’s biggest bands. It follows us through a hectic, exciting year in our career; from meeting with the record company, through the filming of video promos in New Orleans, to our sell-out world tour. It also provides a unique insight into the band via informative, revealing interviews and the off stage humour, all linked to the music of Level 42.”

Nico - The End, 2 CD edition

Album release: 2 CD version of Nico's The End
Release date: October 1, 2012
Label: Universal

Nico's 1974 album, The End, was her fourth solo release, her fifth collaboration with John Cale (including The Velvet Underground & Nico) and her third with him as producer. John Cale had signed a new contract with Island records in 1973 and Nico was also brought to the label by A&R man Richard Williams, although The End would be only full album she recorded for the label.

The album was recorded in 1973 at Sound Techniques in London, with John Wood (who had also engineered the earlier Desertshore) and Cale. He chose Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music to work on the album with him; between them they provided the entire instrumental framework for Nico and her harmonium. The album was recorded quickly; the arrangements were mostly Nico’s own and Cale was impressed by the new way she enriched her phrasing with Arabic flourishes which he was able to complement with Middle Eastern style percussion.

The End, remastered here for the first time, was a definite move away from the stark, almost classical sound of Nico and Cale’s collaboration on The Marble Index, and the folk motifs employed on Desertshore. It completes her glorious triptych with John Cale.

Island included Nico on the bill of the specially-prepared publicity concert which also launched new LPs from Cale, Eno, and Kevin Ayers. The concert took place at London’s Rainbow Theatre on June 1, 1974 - this date became the title of the resulting live album released only three weeks later. Nico performed two tracks from her new album, The End and a previously unreleased version of Das Lied der Deutschen. Both tracks can be heard on this new edition.

Nico also had a champion in John Peel, appearing twice on his programme during this period. Her first Peel session was recorded on 2 February 1971, ostensibly to promote Desertshore, but she debuted one new song, Secret Side, which was later recorded for The End.  This session was released on vinyl by Strange Fruit but has long been deleted.  Peel invited Nico on the programme again on 3 December 1974. The recording of this session, along with the tracks Secret Side and The Valley of the Kings, which she performed on The Old Grey Whistle Test have been unreleased until now. The Strange Fruit tracks make their CD debut here.

Although critically well received, The End sold poorly and Nico was dropped by Island; she wouldn’t get another recording contract for almost a decade, recording only two further studio albums before her death in 1988.

The End remains one of Nico’s most remarkable records and brilliantly complements her two previous solo albums produced by John Cale. This trilogy undoubtedly represents Nico’s best work, a unique statement from an artist with an uncompromising musical vision.

Steve Winwood - Arc of a Diver, Deluxe Edition released on 24 September

Album release: Arc of a Diver - Deluxe Edition by Seve Winwood
Release date: 24 September 2012
Label: Universal

Arc Of A Diver, originally released in December 1980, is the second solo album recorded by Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith). The album was performed entirely by Steve Winwood himself.

The bonus disc features three extra tracks: Arc Of A Diver (4:14 - the edited US single version), Spanish Dancer (6:08 - radio edit 2010 version) and Night Train (6:30 - instrumental version from the UK 12” single which has never been released on CD before. This version has extra guitar and keyboards and is much longer).

It also features the BBC Radio 2 documentary Arc Of A Diver, The Steve Winwood Story. Kate Thornton tells the story of a great songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer who’s been a key figure in pop music for over forty years.

Immersed in jazz, skiffle and then rhythm and blues, Steve was bought up in Birmingham and it was there with his brother Muff, Pete York and Spencer Davis that he formed the group that was to have such seminal hits as Keep on Running and Gimme Some Lovin. In 1967, Steve moved on to join Traffic, one of the most creative and enduring groups of the 60s and 70s. When Traffic eventually broke up, Steve played sessions with almost everyone in pop and rock. His first solo album came out in 1977 and with singles like Valerie and Higher Love, he'd established himself as a kind of elder statesman of rock.

Universal marks 45th anniversary of 'The Velvet Underground and Nico' with deluxe six-CD collection

Super Deluxe six-CD collection features previously unreleased recordings from Factory rehearsals, Scepter Studios acetate, live performances

"Modern music begins with The Velvets.” - Lester Bangs

When The Velvet Underground & Nico album was released in March 1967 on Verve Records, with its Andy Warhol-designed, peel-off banana cover, it was far from a chart-topper. In fact, as the quote attributed to Brian Eno famously put it, the album may not have sold many copies, “but everyone who bought it formed a band.” And its reputation as a groundbreaker has only increased over the four-and-a-half decades since its original release.

Universal Music / Polydor will celebrate the now-iconic album’s 45th anniversary on October 30 2012 with a multi-format, worldwide release on October 29th and 30th that includes stereo and mono versions remastered from the original tapes, previously unreleased recordings of the band’s rehearsals in Warhol’s Factory and the subsequent rare April 1966 Scepter Studios recordings captured on acetate which feature early, alternate versions of songs later issued on the album.

A limited-edition, super deluxe six-CD box set will also feature a previously unavailable November ’66 live concert performed by the Velvets’ original, five-person lineup — Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Moe Tucker and Nico — at the Valleydale Ballroom in Columbus, Ohio, and Nico’s Chelsea Girl, an album released in October 1967 (seven months after the Velvets’ disc) which featured all the members of the band as well as a teenage folksinger named Jackson Browne. It also includes an 88-page booklet with a new essay by band biographer Richie Unterberger. All remastering, tape transfers and digital assembly was overseen by veteran A&R producer Bill Levenson at the prestigious Sterling Sound Studios in New York; Levenson has been involved with previous Velvet Underground reissues for more than 30 years, working on VU and Another VU in the ’80s, the banana-covered box set in the ’90s and UMG’s first expanded, deluxe edition of The Velvet Underground & Nico in 2002.

This six-CD set captures the Velvets in a crucial period in their development, covering the band’s Factory rehearsals in January ’66, the original Scepter recording sessions that April, then a live show in November, leading up to the March ’67 release, almost a year after the album was finished. Nico’s Chelsea Girl, which came out seven months later in October, completes the set’s almost two-year arc, chronicling the band both before and directly after its historic debut.

The super deluxe set allows fans to compare the mono and stereo versions of the album. Longtime Velvets aficionados have touted the mono mix because of its lo-fi quality, with the music coming off even tougher as a result of its compression.

The Velvet Underground & Nico album has achieved many honours since its release: The Observer placed it number 1 in 50 Albums that Changed the World; Uncut placed it at number 1 of 100 Greatest Debut Albums; it was placed in the top 10 of Mojo's 100 Greatest Albums Ever Made and it continues to consistently top UK polls.

In the US, the earned the original band a slot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; Rolling Stone placed it at number 13 on the list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in November 2003, dubbing it “the most prophetic rock album ever made”; Spin Magazine placed it atop its list of the Top 15 Most Influential Albums of All Time that same year and the album is one of 225 recordings in the prestigious Library of Congress National Recording Registry. In Czechoslovakia, the band gave its name to the Velvet Revolution, which overthrew the Communist regime in that country. Globally, the album is seen just like Sgt. Pepper’s and Pet Sounds, as a seminal, influential high-water mark in rock music history.

Universal will release the album worldwide simultaneously in six different physical and digital versions. Aside from the Super Deluxe edition, The Velvet Underground & Nico will be available in a brand-new two-CD Deluxe Edition which includes a stereo version of the album along with a separate disc of the Factory rehearsals and Scepter Studios sessions. There will also be a digital exclusive and a one-CD original stereo album remaster in both physical and digital form (alongside a remastered vinyl edition).

The deluxe edition and digital reissue of The Velvet Underground & Nico is not only for hard-core fans, but for anyone who wishes to trace the two-year development of a world-class band in the process of creating one of the greatest albums in rock history through rare and previously unreleased recordings.

Neil Diamond's 'Hot August Night' - 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Neil Diamond Hot August Night

Album reissue: Neil Diamond, 'Hot August Night' - 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
Release date: 6 August 2012
Label: Universal

This is gonna be special. I promised that before I came back to this theater that we would do things for you that you would not forget for a while and that’s what we’re about tonight.” – Neil Diamond, 1972

On August 24, 1972, a young singer/songwriter by the name of Neil Diamond took over Los Angeles’ beautiful Greek Theater for 10 sold out nights. The legend of Neil Diamond the performer was unquestionably born on that night; Diamond and his band were at the peak of their game; and this would be captured forever on the two-record set Hot August Night, which changed his life and his legacy. One of Diamond’s most successful albums worldwide, the multiple platinum album in the US spent a mind-blowing 29 weeks on the top of the charts in Australia. Hot August Night is one of the most celebrated and acknowledged albums of his career and arguably one of the greatest live albums ever recorded.

Now, as impressive and wide-reaching as the scope Diamond showcases on the original recording, Hot August Night - 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will be released on July 30, 2012 through Universal Music and covers an even greater array on this re-mastered edition. The new edition features signature hits and fan favourites as well as three previously unreleased recordings, plus stage banter and band introductions unearthed from the archives of 40 years ago: a complete aural experience capturing that magical night.

“This album captures the very essence of Neil Diamond - his vocals, his showmanship, his artistry and his rapport and command of an audience. His original album is a classic. We are honored that he has entrusted us to expand his masterpiece and deliver a deluxe edition that showcases that entire night’s show.” said Bruce Resnikoff, President/CEO, Universal Music Enterprises.

Extra tracks

The unreleased material includes A Modern Day Version Of Love where Diamond shows off all of his skills as a masterful vocalist with this gorgeous rendition of his 1968 chestnut. The Randy Newman-penned I Think It’s Going To Rain Today is a genteel ballad in which Diamond displays his humanity, almost speaking the soft words against the backdrop of a sparse, but theatrical arrangement. And finally there’s Gitchy Goomy, which he introduces as a philosophy lesson to a child learning about life. And like all great children’s tales, this one has just the right mix of morality and infectious fun. Also included are the previously unheard band introductions, nearly ten minutes of a great showman putting on a class in the increasingly lost art of stage banter and showmanship.

Across a musical career spanning nearly five decades, Neil Diamond has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide, has had 56 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100, including 37 top 10 singles and 16 top 10 albums. A Grammy Award-winning artist, Diamond has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and is a recipient of the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. Among Diamond’s many other honors, he has received a Golden Globe Award and 13 Grammy nominations and he was named the 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year. Diamond is currently on tour, with a special stop scheduled in August at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, where it all began.

25th-year anniversary of INXS' landmark 'KICK' album out on September 17th

Album reissue: KICK by INXS
Release date: 17 September 2012
Label: Universal
Listen / watch: Click here for the Youtube showreel.

“By the time we got to KICK we really felt we were in our place in our time. We had been very fortunate to be nurtured by people of great calibre, so why not go the whole distance and really explore, gloves are off, dogs are off the chain, let’s go for it.” - Andrew Farriss, 2012

“We were so caught up in what we were doing we didn’t think about sounding contemporary or not. This slinky rock and roll is what we do.” - Tim Farriss, 2012

“At last we’re not the underdogs” - Michael Hutchence 1989

On September 17th 2012 INXS will be celebrating the 25th year anniversary of KICK by releasing special Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Digital versions of this landmark album. The Super Deluxe Edition will feature amazing unseen personal home movie documentary footage. A taster of this footage is hosted here:
http://petrolelectric.com/kickhomevideo/

Released in 1987, KICK propelled INXS to a new level, cementing their reputation and firmly establishing the band as a force to be reckoned with worldwide. The album changed everything, becoming a slow-burning phenomenon that thanks to its trailblazing lead single, ‘Need You Tonight’, broke out around the world over the next 18 months.  If ever a record embodied the oxymoron ‘complex simplicity’, KICK, the sixth album by INXS – Michael Hutchence, Andrew Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, Tim Farriss, Garry Gary Beers and Jon Farriss – was it. It’s an album so full of surprise, that even from a distance of 25 years, when you listen to it, you’re still waiting and wondering what exactly is about to happen next. The album spawned 4 US top 10 singles in a row including hits such as New Sensation, Devil Inside, and the timeless ballad Never Tear Us Apart, alongside fan favourites Guns In The Sky and Wild Life. Certified eight times platinum in the US alone, Kick sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

INXS’ most world-renowned, career defining and influential album release to date remains a true classic. The 25th anniversary celebrates KICK's remarkable story and its lasting importance, influence and inspiration on today’s music; this is illustrated by the fact that so many artists are still covering and sampling tracks from the record to this day. From Ben Harper’s funky take on Devil Inside, to Professor Green and Liv Tyler’s renditions of Need You Tonight, (the former of which reached top 3 in the UK charts, while the latter was recently used as the synch for the recent global Givenchy campaign), the record has inspired a wide variety of artists in the last 25 years including Snow Patrol, John Mayer, Beck, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Natalie Imbruglia, and Bono. It has also been widely reported that Adele’s “favourite song of all time” is Never Tear Us Apart, and rumour has it she has recorded a version of this song for her 3rd album.

For a group that has enjoyed the highest of highs and the deepest of lows, KICK cannot fail to have a special niche in the hearts of those who made it: it is a fabulous collision of style, substance, musicianship, hard work, integrity, production, marketing, and passion – everything that one of the greatest albums of its era should be.

The anniversary release of KICK will include a Deluxe edition, a Super Deluxe edition and two Download editions. The Deluxe edition set will include 2 CDs, the second featuring remixes and bonus material. The Super Deluxe Edition package of 3 CDs and a DVD will feature demos, remixes, video promos, and unseen documentary footage. It will come with a 64-page art book, which will include never-before seen handwritten lyrics directly from Michael’s family archives, unseen photos, diaries, and interview with each band member, and the record's producer, Chris Thomas. Swing out Sister: It’s Better To Travel – 2 CD Expanded Edition

Swing Out Sister

Album reissue: It's Better to Travel by Swing Out Sister
Label: Universal Music Catalogue / Re-presents
Release date: 16 July 2012

Universal Music Catalogue’s “Re-presents” label takes well known and loved albums from decades gone and quite literally re-presents them in a fresh, new form.  Each 2 CD package features the original album as it was in its entirety plus other exciting material, including original B-sides, alternative mixes, extended versions and edits – many of which have never before appeared on CD. A sure way to whet the appetites of seasoned fans and new discoverers to these classic records alike.

Swing Out Sister’s 1987 chart-topping debut It’s Better To Travel is a warmly organic collection of electronic pop that sets itself apart with its use of real strings and horns as well as lead singer Corinne Drewery’s much-loved and recognisable vocals. The record spawned two Top 10 hits and achieved platinum status as well as earning the band two Grammy nominations and a host of critical praise from the likes of Melody Maker (“spanking, sparkling, radio-friendly little tunes”) and NME (“lush, laidback funky mix with nifty horn section”) .

A chance meeting at Manchester’s now legendary Hacienda club brought Andy Connell and Corinne Drewery together. Andy had proved his musical capabilities with Factory Records’ A Certain Ratio, while Corinne, after graduating from St. Martin’s School of Art in London, found her musical interests had eclipsed her fashion career. Along with ex-Magazine drummer Martin Jackson they combined their diverse influences to produce a series of demos which attracted the attention of several major labels, including Phonogram, who eventually signed the band.

Once Swing Out Sister was formed in 1985, a long-term working relationship with producer Paul Staveley O’Duffy was established, which was to define the future sound of the group. Their unique blend of cinematic jazz pop earned them several chart singles, including Breakout, a UK No.4 Hit, Surrender and Twilight World, resulting in their 1987 debut album, It’s Better To Travel hitting the number one spot in the UK album charts. Success followed throughout Europe, America and the Far East.

In 1988, Swing Out Sister were nominated for two Grammy Awards including ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo’ for Breakout.

Ten studio albums, two live albums and over a decade of live shows have gained Swing Out Sister international success. This newly enhanced 2 CD package has been compiled by Swing Out Sister (Corinne Drewery and Andy Connell); the audio is newly re-mastered; the brand new booklet features sleeve notes written by the band and a host of carefully selected photos.

Executive Producer: Olivia Harrison

Sleeve notes by producer Giles Martin

"In 2009 I was privileged to be invited by Olivia to listen to tapes that George had stored in his library at Friar Park. In the beautiful setting of George’s studio, overlooking the meticulous gardens that he had created, engineer Paul Hicks and I unboxed forgotten reels to hear the music George had left behind. This first collection provides a glimpse of what we found. From early multi-tracks of live takes of My Sweet Lord and All Things Must Pass to more recent tracks like Mama You’ve Been On My Mind, we hear an intimacy to George’s voice and guitar that can only be achieved with live performance devoid of production. I’d like to thank Olivia and Dhani for the honour of being invited into their home to share the work that George gave us all."

About the Living in the Material World documentary

George Harrison: Living in the Material World focuses the imaginative and inspired eye of one of cinema’s most pre-eminent filmmakers on one of the world’s most influential men. The film takes viewers on the musical and spiritual voyage that was Harrison’s life, much of it told in his own words.  The result is deeply moving and touches each viewer in unique and individual ways.

Harrison was bold, an iconoclast. His platinum-selling solo record, All Things Must Pass, was released as a triple album and featured the hit single “My Sweet Lord.” He organized the landmark benefit Concert for Bangladesh — the first major rock concert to address a world crisis. He launched HandMade Films, a key factor in the revival of the British film industry in the 1980s. He spent 30 years restoring one of the great estates and gardens in England, Friar Park. In every aspect of his professional, personal and spiritual life, until his final hours, Harrison blazed his own path.

As his friend John Lennon once said, “George himself is no mystery. But the mystery inside George is immense. It’s watching him uncover it all little by little that’s so damn interesting.”
