Owlle to release debut album, 'France' on November 17

owlle-590.jpg

Album release: ‘France’ by Owlle
Label: Aztec
Release date: 17 November 2014
Listen on: official Owlle website

“Her breakout single, the sparkly synth-laden “Ticky Ticky,” tiptoes across your eardrums and practically forces you out onto the dance floor.” – Nylon

“Darkly danceable electro-pop… all tinged with sadness. You can hear the subtle influences of Bronksi Beat Madonna and the subtle hints of Frank Ocean.”  – Notion

“French electro-pop chanteuse Owlle is set to take the world by storm with her unique fusing of 80s era melody, super danceable beats and a pop-art aesthetic.” – Amelia’s

For French 20-something, Owlle, music is a way to tell stories, a way to embrace freedom and other worlds, and very much expose two sides of the same coin. In Owlle’s world, the things that initially seem quite different from one another can often reveal themselves to be quite closely interlinked. As an arts graduate, on her debut album France, she continually demonstrates that visual art can be as much an influence over recorded output as other sounds themselves can. Having experienced her own light bulb moment at one of Brian Eno’s audio-visual installations, the effects were apparently long lasting; “I’m not sure if I’d ever have dared to start a musical career if it wasn’t for the rush I got when I discovered one of Eno’s audio-visual installations at an art fair. It was called Quiet Club and the way sound and visuals interacted truly fascinated me.”

An atmosphere of contradiction within music is never far from Owlle’s mindset either (“I like mixing different or even antagonistic atmospheres”) and it’s these more mercurial traits that have earned her comparisons to others such as, Chairlift, Lykki Li, Bat For Lashes and Grimes. The signposts can be followed on tracks like Ticky Ticky, with its toe-tapping melancholia and fizzing electronics. or on forthcoming single, and album opener Fog, which somehow manages to feel both claustrophobic and free at the same time. Of the record, Owlle has said that often “there’s the notion of someone running incessantly after something”, and it’s perhaps the pace of Fog that sets this tone for the rest of the album. Whatever her motives, Francebursts with ideas, leads the listener through darkened corridors, and manages to capture that most illusive of pop virtues; Style and Substance. Owlle has both to spare.

Leading into the UK release of France, Owlle has bothered the top of Hype Machine with remixed versions of her own tracks (most notably cuts by St Pepsi and Maelstrom), while Owlle herself has remixed the likes of Sia and Depeche Mode.  Further tracks have featured on mixtapes for i-D, Under Your Sun was featured as one of Daytrotter’s Best Songs of 2013 and she has gone on to support artists like Sebastian Tellier and Phoenix on tour. 2013 saw her play at Lovebox and feature at various discovery festivals in Europe, including The Great Escape, Eurosonic, Reeperbahn and China’s own Strawberry Festival.

Debut album, 'Heal', from AxxoN N gets October release

AxxoN N
AxxoN N

Album release: “Heal” by AxxoN N

Release date: October 13 2014

Label: Domestic Records

Listen on: Soundcloud

Little is known about AxxoN N apart from the fact that this debut recording has been constructed over the last 4 years in the UK, drawing on the surrounding popular culture that is the early 21st entury.

Sourced almost entirely from samples, it’s a enlightening work that is virtually impossible to categorise. Perhaps a distant bastard cousin of Autechre and the more fluid experiments of Kraftwerk around the time of Radio Activity, this music takes the listener on an unpredictable journey which appears to have no final destination. Like all great works, there are more questions than answers.

This work takes on conceptual form, each track addressing and coming to terms with states of deep depression and anxiety.

AxxoN N music is painted out of a deep blue and grey canvas where darkness is omnipresent, but as the music unravels it becomes ever more unpredictable, bright flashes of melody jump out of the dense landscape.

Heal offers the listener a curious concoction of loops and beats which could have been dug up from a distant corner of a future David Lynch film set at a fucked up surrealist shopping channel somewhere high in the Hollywood hills.

If Heal was a planet it would be spinning on more than one axis, throwing its inhabitants out across the universe into a dark future…and is this the true music of the future? A monumental claim perhaps, but it comes very very close.

Who needs mind altering drugs when there is “Heal” by AxxoN N?

Work and Love: the new album from Elliott BROOD

Elliot Brood
Elliot Brood

Album release: “Work and Love” by Elliott BROOD

Release date: 21 October 2014

Label: Paper Bag Records

Listen on: official Elliott Brood website

Toronto trio Elliott BROOD are gearing up to release their highly anticipated new album, ‘Work and Love’ (Paper Bag Records). The album is the follow-up to ‘Days Into Years’, which won a Juno Award in 2013 for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. For ‘Work and Love’, Elliott BROOD withdrew to a farmhouse in Bath, Ontario where they recorded nine songs in two weeks with producer Ian Blurton (The Weakerthans, Amy Millan) - their first time working with an outside producer. The result is their most personal and urgent album to date, with rock influences that nod as much to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, as much as Richard Buckner and Whiskeytown.

Seattle radio giant, KEXP recently premiered “Jigsaw Heart,” the first new song ‘Work and Love,’ calling it the bands “most adventurous album to date”

On ‘Work and Love,’ Elliott BROOD’s two songwriters Casey Laforet and Mark Sasso decided to mine the bare histories of their own lives: penning verses about the ends of relationships and the tests of adulthood, long drives, childhood retreating in a rear-view mirror. ‘Work and Love’ also serves as a eulogy for the moments on the doorstep of manhood: first loves, lost loves, and young men’s just desserts.

Select tracks on the album feature Aaron Goldstein (City and Colour) on pedal steel and John Dinsmore (Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer) on bass. ‘Work and Love’ is Elliott BROOD at their sheerest, facing forward and backward at the same time.

Elliott BROOD have confirmed pre-release shows at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall on 9/17, D.C’s Black Cat Backstage on 9/18 and the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion in Bristol, TN on 9/20-21 (full schedule below). More dates will soon be announced.

New video and tour dates from Happyness

happyness-pic1.jpg

Video Release: “Anything I Do Is All Right”

Watch: on Youtube

Happyness have just unveiled their first ever music video, for “Anything I Do Is All Right”, the lead track from their forthcoming “Anything I Do Is All Right” EP. The EP, out September 1st, is a digital only release which arrives just as the band gear up for a headline run in October. Having spent May on the road with Ezra Furman, appeared at Liverpool Sound City and Live At Leeds, as well as booking in summer appearances at festivals like Reading, Leeds, Bestival, Secret Garden Party and Green Man, the band are set for what is sure to be their busiest tour yet.

The band comment: “One night in Bermondsey, we wanted to make a louder one.  It’s kind of about getting your personality off the internet or the television or pornography or whatever you’re hooked on. We’re going on tour again, it will be nice to get as close as possible to as many people as possible.”

View the video, directed by Adi Parige, here

Taking in a show at London’s Elektrowerkz on October 14th, the band will be translating their trademark brand of bracing, but literate, fuzzy alt rock to live audiences in the UK, before taking their first steps in the USA at this year’s CMJ.

The ‘Anything I Do Is All Right’ EP is released on 1st September and

can be pre-ordered here

. The album Weird Little Birthday is out now.

Westward Ho! - the new album from Police Dog Hogan

police-dog-hogan.jpg

Album release: “Westward Ho!” by Police Dog Hogan

Label: Union Music Store

Release date: 6 October 2014

Listen: on official Police Dog Hogan website

With 8 members in the full line-up and instruments including guitar, accordion, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and trumpet, Police Dog Hogan draw their influences from many different wells. You could call it Americana, country-folk, folk-pop or even urban bluegrass, but it’s difficult to do justice to the sheer range of styles this band can bend to its will.

Their exuberant  mix of country-fried heartbreakers, belting anthems, foot-stomping singlaongs and souvenir tea towels made them a firm favourite on the festival circuit since forming in 2009.  “They’re one of my bands to watch,” says Radio 2 DJ Johnnie Walker. “Great songs, great musicians, and their live shows are really, really good fun.”

Police Dog Hogan’s second album, From the Land of Miracles, attracted praise from many quarters. “No one in their right mind would imagine that the band that play on the opening track Better Go Now come from anywhere other than the heartland of America,” said Maverick magazine’s 5-star review. “But some of James Studholme’s intricate guitar playing comes straight out of the traditional English folk book and would make Richard Thompson proud.”

With an average age comfortably over 40 (23-year old trumpeter Emily Norris is something of an outlier), Police Dog Hogan offer more in the way of experience than innocence. While the members hold down a variety of what might be described as “day jobs” (their banjo player Tim Dowling is a writer and Guardian columnist; lead singer James Studholme runs an advertising production company), they take the music very seriously, and keep up a rigorous touring schedule, recently playing to sell-out crowds at Bush Hall, the Borderline and various venues across the UK, as well as festivals including Camp Bestival, Cornbury, Maverick and Kendal Calling.

This September the band are exporting their unique take on Americana to Nashville, playing two showcase gigs at the Americana Music Association awards. After that they return to the UK to play a string of dates in October, November and December.

Their third album Westward Ho! is due out on the influential Union Music Store label in the autumn. That title - part swashbuckling exhortation, part melancholy seaside postcard - goes some way toward encapsulating Police Dog Hogan’s sound: bold and infectious country-folk wedded to a wry, reflective and deeply English sensibility.

Westward Ho! is produced by the Oysterband’s Al Scott. “I loved Al’s production of the June Tabor & Oysterband’s Ragged Kingdom record, which I think is a classic,” says James Studholme. “He has a certain clarity and  attack, going right back to the Levellers. When I found out he was producing a new CD for our label mates Hatful of Rain (The Morning Key), working with him suddenly sounded like a possibility. He was busy touring with Oysterband, but we were prepared to wait.”

Among its songs of hard won experience, Westward Ho! includes the track Home, a collaboration between Police Dog Hogan and the Music in Prisons charity. This version of Home came about as the result of a joint live gig with Platform 7 - a band made up of ex-prisoners under the wing of Music in Prisons - and was recorded with the aid of several members of the group.

“We’d seen Platform 7 perform,” says Tim Dowling, “and had long talked of doing a show together, but I don’t think any of us were prepared for the impact this song had on the audience. When it came to recording it, we knew that was the version we wanted.”

New EP from Roxanne de Bastion

Roxanne de Bastion EP cover
Roxanne de Bastion EP cover

EP Release: “Seeing You” by Roxanne de Bastion

Release date: 22 September 2014

Label: Hidden Trail Records

Listen: on official Roxanne de Bastion website

“Recalls moments of Martha Wainwright, Joni Mitchell and, more contemporarily, Laura Marling” - Artrocker

“If you ever get a chance to go see her live – definitely do!” - BBC Introducing

Seeing You was recorded in London and produced by Ben Walker (radio 2 Folk Award Nominee). The EP contains 4 new tracks of cutting and clever lyrics, delivered with what BBC6 producer Tom Whalley said to be “one of the most perfect voices [he’s] ever heard”.

Roxanne de Bastion was born in Berlin and grew up both in England and Germany until she set out on her own, leaving Berlin for London, equipped only with her guitar and a one-way ticket. The young troubadour tours throughout the UK, mainland Europe and the United States, all on trains and busses. She self-released her debut album The Real Thing, produced by Gordon Raphael (The Strokes / Regina Spektor) in 2013 and has since then been invited to speak at music industry panels on the subjects of DIY music, copyright and the future of music, along side Fran Healy (Travis) and Ed O’Brien (Radiohead). She has already been championed by Tom Robinson on BBC6, John Kennedy on XFM, Ruth Barnes on Amazing Radio, as well as MTV and Radio Eins in Germany. With Seeing You, Roxanne de Bastion continues to forge her own style and a unique approach to a classic musical genre.

Musically, Roxanne’s compositions are routed in the music of the 1960’s, but the tone of voice is very much her own and the stories told are expressed in a way that could only be now. Her lyrics range from introspective journeys in Seeing You and Same Moon, through to observations on instant gratification and repetition (Rerun) and the tearing down of the East Side Gallery in Berlin, Roxanne’s town of birth (Wasteland).

Memnon Sa release their debut, "Citadel", in October

Album Art.jpg

Album release: “Citadel” by Memnon Sa

Release date: 20 October 2014

Label: Pyramide Noire Records

Listen: on Tumblr

Out from the mists of London emerges Memnon Sa with their debut release ‘Citadel’. Memnon Sa is the new instrumental psych-folk/doom brainchild of the talented Misha Hering (Among the Bones, Holy Mountain Studios). ‘Citadel’ is a masterfully bleak collection of compositions, which combine the crushing suspense of the doom genre aligned against almost Boredoms-esque passages of texture and psychedelic and folk overtones.

You can find comparison for ‘Citadel’ in recent bands by looking to the more atmospheric end of the Doom genre with artists such as Sunn O))) and Boris, but you also find yourself being reminded of dark 1970’s Kraut Rock bands such as Popul Vuh, Tangerine Dream, and Ash Ra Temple which only adds a further transcendental appeal for the album. Memnon Sa lets you make comparisons to these artists and then adds to them further exploring what Misha calls “ancient psychedelia”.

‘Citadel’ works best when experienced as a singular piece of music, but standout tracks such as ‘Heca Emem Ra’ show a dark musical landscape all of its own, sombre but hopeful. By combining an arsenal of instruments such as analogue synths, mellotrons, tape delay and tube amps with undertones of world music you are left with the feeling that you are exploring the dark history of an ancient civilisation.

Memnon Sa creates an environment that combines very primitive forms of excitement and fear, which is very evocative of 1970’s cinema, particularly suspenseful soundtracks such as Solaris and Stalker. This can also be related to more modern films such as Prometheus or Leviathan, which would be suited to the sounds of isolation and mystery that ‘Citidel’ creates. Film is a big influence of Misha’s song-writing process as he states that it is very similar to “what a film composer would be doing, trying to create a musical landscape that evokes certain images”

Albums that manage to merge such a wide variety of styles and exhibit such a multitude of musical landscapes are rare, this is an LP that is drawn from a niche world, but will appeal to many below the surface.

Memnon Sa have produced a debut which is both accomplished and diverse, and only the very start of this journey.

Vomitface unveil new track, 'Huffer'

Stream announcement: ‘Huffer’ by Vomitface
Listen to stream: on Soundcloud

Huffer was written about this time Miley Cyrus came over to hang out our house while Keller was recording a grindcore band when we lived in Nashville. They were doing whatever they could to get blazed, including wrapping their faces in cellophane soaked in paint thinner. We found them in the basement out of their minds. They were mumbling incoherently about cannibalism and the last supper.” - Vomitface

NY ‘Avant-grunge’ band Vomitface release a new track today, ‘Huffer’. You can listen to it on Soundcloud here.

Reaction

  • ‘Sludgy grunge riffs with spazzy art-punk rhythms and wild whispers and howls’ – Stereogum
  • ‘This erratic bunch have some colourful ideas to say the least’ – NME
  • ‘With gritty guitar riffs and in-your-face vocals that are reminiscent of Jeremy Enigk or even River Cuomo at times. It’s as dirty as their name’ - The 405
  • ‘Notwithstanding a name that - alone - will confine them to the deepest layers of the underground for the rest of their days, NJ/Brooklyn punks Vomitface aren’t actually that revolting. We are diggin this new EP’ – The Deli

New track from Nai Harvest

Stream: “Buttercups” by Nai Harvest
Release date: available now
Label: Topshelf Records
Listen: on Soundcloud | Consequence of Sound

Indie-rock two-piece Nai Harvest (signed to Topshelf Records) return with “Buttercups”, their most overtly melodic track yet, and one that pays as many dues to the likes of Ride, Chapterhouse, early Superchunk, classic lo-fi and dreampop as it does the fiery emo and punk spirit of their previous output.

It’s a song about distance, and trying to be fair and honest with someone you’re in love with who lives far away but you’re not in a legitimate relationship with. You’re allowed to do what you want with whoever you want but do you really want to do it or not?

Sounding, as ever, a whole lot bigger than just the two of them, “Buttercups” is the A-side of their split with Playlounge, which sees both bands contributing a new track and, in turn, a cover of each other. The record will be released on 12” flower shaped vinyl (7” playable).

Nai Harvest are:

Ben Thompson – guitar and vocals
Lew Currie – drums

Pre-order the split from Dog Knights Productions here.

Topshelf Records will also have copies of the split available in the US.

Previous press for Nai Harvest

“The intoxicated tantrums of their striking debut ‘Whatever’ have given way to a manageable, strangely enjoyable hangover on ‘Hold Open My Head’… clean guitars cycle in a dream state during the verse and hitch in off-kilter rhythms during the hook”  – Pitchfork

“… their crafty plays on rhythm and dexterously executed shredding are anything but average” – MTV Iggy

“… hook-laden… the track applies the band’s knack for ramshackle punk and emo sensibilities to riffs far meatier and muscular than anything they’ve produced before” – DIY

“… calms down the post-hardcore tendencies of Whatever and veers more towards emo’s indie rock side” – Brooklyn Vegan

“cult Sheffield punks” – NME

Following an explosive UK tour with Gnarwolves in December, the duo followed this with support slots for Real Friends, You Blew It! and Modern Baseball’s UK tour in May and after key festival appearances, including Tramlines and Beacons, they will be on the road again with Superheaven in September.

Virgin Front Line: Sounds of Reality

Box set release: “Virgin Front Line: Sounds of Reality” (Various)
Release date: 11 August 2014
Label: Universal

On 10 March 1978 Virgin Records launched a label that, throughout the remainder of the decade, would set the benchmark for Roots Reggae: Front Line.

In the space of just under two years, some 46 albums and 26 singles saw issue on the iconic imprint, with its releases consistently of the highest calibre, and rating among the very best music Jamaica had to offer.

Front Line’s brief but glorious existence as the world’s greatest Roots Reggae label is celebrated with this deluxe box set, which across its 5 discs features many of Jamaica’s greatest talents, performing 92 of the most enduring Roots, Dub, Lovers Rock and DJ sounds of the seventies, with over 31 tracks new to CD, of which a third are previously unissued.

Also included in the package is a 52 page booklet, which opens with a typically captivating foreword from John Lydon, whose talent scouting trip to Jamaica with Richard Branson early in 1978 was key to Virgin’s acquisition of some of the finest Reggae recordings of the era.

Peppered with fascinating imagery, including numerous previously unseen shots from the trip taken by world renowned photographer Dennis Morris, every key episode during Front Line’s brief yet glorious history is disclosed, courtesy of fascinating anecdotes from Don Letts, the label’s original manager Jumbo Vanrenen and its designer Brian Cooke, whose original drafts for the iconic imprint are revealed for the first time ever.

As an added bonus, the set also contains four high quality reproductions of classic posters from the seventies, as well as a car sticker, based on the now impossibly rare Front Line Rockers badge from 1976.

This, the most comprehensive collection of Front Line tracks ever to see issue, pays due homage to the legendary label and flawlessly illustrates just why continues to be widely revered by Reggae fans around the world, more than 36 years after its launch.

Olde Worlde: "The Blue Musk-Oxen" out on September 1

Album release: “The Blue Musk-Oxen” by Olde World
Release date: September 1 2014
Label: Groundhog Records
Listen: on Olde World website

Olde Worlde is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist, Sohhei Numata. Born in Machida, Tokyo, Olde Worlde releases his brand new album The Blue Musk-Oxen in the UK on September 1st. Recorded, produced and mixed by Brad Wood (The Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Lee, Sunny Day Real Estate, Tortoise) it features current single Stuck In Hibernation – which is picking up airplay across BBC 6 Music, including spins at Lauren Laverne. On The Blue Musk-Oxen, Numata plays guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, piano, keyboard and moog.

As a precocious teenager, fixated on all kinds of musical styles from a very early age, it wasn’t long before he made himself a regular on the city’s busking circuit, absorbing the styles and skills of the city’s broad range of live talent. With much of the local music being sung in Japanese though, Namata looked to learn English from as many sources as he could, learning in person from J-Punk bands he would see live, but eventually settling on American Forces Radio as the medium to best be exposed to his adopted tongue.

Getting to grips with many a 90s US Indie Rock and Power Pop band through his radio, the traits of these come to the fore on The Blue Musk-Oxen. From former single Your Bird’s delicate lilt and simple melody, through to Stuck In Hibernation’s more fractured guitars and buoyant pace, The Blue Musk-Oxen is made a bright, sun-kissed, collection thanks to Brad Wood’s production.

Bonnie Raitt's classic "Nick of Time" to be reissued on special edition vinyl

Album re-issue: “Nick of Time” by Bonnie Raitt
Release date: 21 July 2014
Label: Capitol / USM

On July 21, Capitol Records/USM will release a special vinyl-only edition of Bonnie Raitt’s classic “Nick of Time” in honor of the album’s 25th anniversary. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s tenth album still stands as her signature work and as a turning point in her legendary career. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart, sold five million copies, and won three GRAMMY® Awards, including “Album of the Year.” Rolling Stone ranked Nick of Time as number 230 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

The Nick of Time - 25th Anniversary album was remastered from the original analogue tapes, overseen by both the albums producer, Don Was and engineer Ed Cherney and is being released on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl.

“Personally, I think it may be the best record of my career” says Raitt. “Every record has its charm and its significance, but I think we finally got it right — I could finally say, ‘Yeah, that’s what I had in mind.’ As a mixture of styles, reflected in one record, it was a really good version of what I do.”

“Nick of Time” came along at a fortuitous moment for Raitt, following a difficult few years in which she had been dropped by her long-time label, Warner Bros, and got sober and healthy. The album was produced by Don Was, which initiated a working relationship that went on for several projects (the 1991 follow-up, Luck of the Draw, sold over seven million copies), and spawned four singles, including the hit “Thing Called Love.” Nick of Time was bookended by two landmark Raitt original compositions: the opening title track, a powerful mediation on aging, and the closing cut, “The Road’s My Middle Name,” a rollicking update of the blues that captured her life as a traveling performer.

“It’s a particularly great batch of songs,” says Raitt, “and the synchronicity of finding these songs when I did—the emotional connection and the gratitude that I had to be given another shot—I think that shows. It was kismet to have it come out this well.”

More than just a best-selling artist, respected guitarist, expressive singer, and accomplished songwriter, Bonnie Raitt has become an institution in American music. The recipient of ten GRAMMY® awards—including “Best Americana Album” for her most recent release, 2012’s Slipstream—she appears on Rolling Stone’s lists of both the Greatest Singers and Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Over the years, Raitt has contributed to over 100 album projects, collaborating with the likes of B.B.King, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder. Yet it is the breakthrough of Nick of Time (which received an additional GRAMMY® nomination when it was remixed for Surround Sound in 2004) that serves as the cornerstone of her body of work.

“The success of Nick of Time brought me a level of freedom, and the opportunities to do everything I had wanted to do,” says Raitt. “Nearly every gift in my life now is, in so many ways, because of what happened with that album and the GRAMMYs®. Definitely one of the greatest highlights of my life.”

Us Amongst The Rest: Follow The Truth

Album release: Follow The Truth by Us Amongst The Rest
Release date: September 29 2014
Label: Two Star Records
Listen: on official Us Amongst The Rest website

Us Amongst The Rest are a four-piece brotherhood of Rock emerging from York. An alliance forged through years of gigs and rival bands, playing since 2012, UATR hold nothing back. Channelling their collective psyche to deliver a raw, focussed, and soulful take on alternative rock, their suitably explosive debut effort Follow The Truth is ground zero, a place from which they hope great things will be born.

Recording the album at InnerSounds Studios with Sam and Joe Graves (Axewound, Glamour of the Kill, Asking Alexandria), and working with such classic and iconic figures, has helped bring together the band’s vision for their sound, resulting in an incredibly accomplished debut.

Follow The Truth exemplifies their determination and confidence, and is complimented by an exhilarating honesty. Recent single Bring The Fuel, a track long awaited by a fervent fan-base, is a perfect introduction to newcomers, with its high production values and accomplished musicianship. Elsewhere, tracks like ‘Sliver & Lead’ and ‘Fields of Fray’ set the bar high, calling to mind early Funeral For A Friend.

As a back to back body of work, the tracks that make up Follow The Truth stem from the band’s own personal struggles, confronting harsh realities, mending relationships, love, loss and ultimately the desire to follow your own path. Perhaps it’s the album’s penultimate track Rise that sets out the band’s intentions perfectly, as vocalist Karl Sandor comments; “As a band (and like all bands) the struggle we faced was to swim out of a sea of musicians, all fighting to be heard. Especially in the town we are from it seems there are almost more bands than there are audiences to listen to them. We unintentionally wrote an album to better define us in our hometown of York”.

Us Amongst The Rest are:

  • Karl Sandor – Bass, vocals
  • Danny Beardmore – Guitars
  • Paul Fernandez – Drums
  • Dan Stockdale – Guitars

New single from The Gromble

Single release: ‘Don’t Stand a Chance’ by The Gromble
Release date: 28 July 2014
Listen / more information: on The Gromble’s Facebook page

‘Somewhere between the lines of rock, folk, and the 90s, there is the handcrafted creation known as The Gromble. Put on your sunglasses, roll down those windows, and let The Gromble help you create the memories that will last a lifetime.’ – Indie Shuffle

‘The five-piece have been honing the craft for some time, and it shows. ‘Slam’ is effortless. A dizzying meeting of vocal hooks and harmonies, where the sunny instrumentation drives the track forward through the approaching clouds to create something both endearingly frenetic and warmly delivered. Accept it all with open arms.’ – Gold Flake Paint

After the success of recent single “Slam” which picked up serious hype across Hype Machine, Indie Shuffle and radio stations across the states, LA quintet The Gromble prepare to release the follow up track “Don’t Stand A Chance”.

Demonstrating a true crescendo of clever instrumentation and vocal harmonies, the track climaxes with a thunderously uplifting spirit to rival even Sigur Ros’ Hoppipolla. A sly ploy considering the lyrical content matter..

Hailing from the warm shores of California, the five-piece have established the kind of rare synchronicity that has helped them carve out a charming blend of orchestral alt-folk and indie rock, honed live supporting such acts as The Lemonheads. With the classical intensity of early greats Pavement, Weezer and Neutral Milk Hotel and a taste for the heartland classics, they arrive somewhere between Grouplove, Miniature Tigers, and Vampire Weekend. They take their name from a character in Nickelodeon’s Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, a perfect indicator of their unashamed love for 90’s pop culture and for the sense of humour that runs beneath the surface of their songs.

This is music for when you’re coming of age, music to soundtrack the best years of your life. The Gromble provide something different for everyone in their refreshing refusal to settle for the status quo. As such, they’ve already been championed by such reputable names as VICE, Gold Flake Paint, KROQ, and Indie Shuffle.

Deluxe album reissues from The Jayhawks

Album reissues: “Sound of Lies”, “Smile” and “Rainy Day Music” by The Jayhawks
Release date: July 7, 2014
Label: American Recordings / USM
Listen on: official Jayhawks website

Hailed as pioneers of the alt-country/Americana sound, the Jayhawks emerged from Minneapolis’ mid-’80s scene with a soaring combination of folksy harmonies and power-pop melodies. The band’s status as a major influence, as well as that of being one of the best bands of its generation, are richly deserved.

The June 30th release of expanded versions of 1997’s SOUND OF LIES, 2000’s SMILE and 2003’s RAINY DAY MUSIC complete the band’s remastering of its entire back catalog. All three American Recordings/USM releases contain bonus tracks, new liner notes and expanded booklets. The albums also chronicle the band’s evolution into crunchier rock, purer pop and a sort of twangy, psychedelic vibe before coming full-circle with a spare country-rock sound.

SOUND OF LIES, SMILE and RAINY DAY MUSIC will also be released August 4th as deluxe, 2 LP vinyl editions to ensure maximum fidelity.  The deluxe vinyl reissues will be remastered on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl and also include the bonus tracks.

The Jayhawks formed in 1985 when Gary Louris was in the decidedly small crowd at the first show future songwriting partner Mark Olson did with bassist Marc Perlman and Norm Rogers (the first in a string of drummers, at least until Tim O’Reagan joined in 1995). A self-titled album was released on a local indie label and Minneapolis’ Twin/Tone released some of the band’s demos as “Blue Earth” in 1989. Legend has it that producer George Drakoulias (Black Crowes) heard the music in the background during a phone call to the label; Drakoulias eventually signed the band to Rick Rubin’s Def American records and produced “Hollywood Town Hall” (1992) and “Tomorrow The Green Grass” (1995), making the Jayhawks staples on the then-emerging adult-alternative radio format.

Olson, the folksier member of the songwriting team, abruptly left the band in 1995. The band regrouped and kept the name, but Olson’s departure and a divorce colored Louris’ dark lyrics of the subsequent Jayhawks album, “Sound of Lies.” With pianist Karen Grotberg as a permanent addition and harmony partner, Louris took advantage of his newfound freedom to experiment with ’60s pop and a more electric sound, even getting a little crunchy around the edges on “Think About It.”

Louris’ lyrics took a more optimistic, albeit cautiously so, turn on the ambitious “Smile,” produced by Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, KISS, Alice Cooper). Jen Gunderman stepped in when Grotberg left to raise a family, and this time Louris’ ventures into contemporary pop featured looping and overdubs, turning downright trip-hop on “Queen of the World,” “Somewhere in Ohio” and “(In My) Wildest Dreams.” It may have been an artistic triumph, but even with the twangy “Better Days” and “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,” the album proved to be a bit much for fans of the Jayhawks’ earlier sound and came after the decline of the adult-alternative format. The headline on a New York Times story about the band asked, “What If You Made a Classic, and No One Cared?”

It was after an acoustic tour that Louris, Perlman, O’Reagan and guitarist Stephen McCarthy recorded 2003’s “Rainy Day Music,” a seeming return to form. The first four tracks are a mini masterpiece - the gently chiming “Stumbling Through the Dark” (written by Louris and Matthew Sweet), the twang-meets-“Eve of Destruction” feel of the soaring “Tailspin,” the country gospel harmonies of “All the Right Reasons” and the catchy, bittersweet “Save It for a Rainy Day” (if you’re trolling the songs on YouTube, that is indeed Mary-Louise Parker in the video). Instead of the earnest folk of the Jayhawks’ early days, there’s a sophisticated, spare sound and a Byrds/CSNY/Buffalo Spingfield vibe. Producer Ethan Johns’ credits speak for themselves - CSN, Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Ray LaMontagne, Crowded House, Laura Marling just to name a few.

It will be the basic lineup from the band’s 1997 shows - Louris, Perlman, O’Reagan, Grotberg and Kraig Johnson - that will tour in support of the reissues. Much of July and part of August will be spent on a mix of headlining and festival dates in Europe, followed by a fall tour of the U.S. and Canada. Confirmed dates follow; for a current list of shows go to www.jayhawksofficial.com.

New acoustic album from Richard Thompson out on July 14

Richard Thompson: Acoustic Classics

Album release: “Acoustic Classics” by Richard Thompson
Release date: July 14, 2014
Label: Proper Records
Listen on: official Richard Thompson website

“Acoustic Classics” is a collection of newly recorded, timeless Richard Thompson songs, featuring 14 tracks culled from his 40 plus years in music. The new album contains reimagined and refined versions of some of his best work as a songwriter including “I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight, “Dimming of the Day,” “1952 Vincent Black Lighting” and “Beeswing.”

“I really wanted to have something that would reflect the acoustic shows,” Richard explains,  “But we didn’t have anything like that.  Just some old, slightly scratchy recordings of solo sets that I wasn’t really happy with.”  His last proper solo acoustic release was the live Small Town Romance, and that was more than 30 years ago! In the meantime, the acoustic shows have evolved as a full parallel to his band tours.

Richard Thompson will be touring the UK solo this summer and – like the new record – will display his incomparable guitar playing and his great songs. You can view tour dates on the Serious website.

Thompson was named by Rolling Stone Magazine’s as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all time and considered one of the UK’s most outstanding songwriters and musicians.  The recipient of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, Mojo’s Les Paul Award and curator of the prestigious Meltdown Festival at the Southbank in 2010, Thompson was most recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting by the Americana Music Association.
