thenewno2 announce release of their debut original score

thenewno2

Soundtrack release: Beautiful Creatures Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Label: Watertower / Sony Music
Release date: February 12 2013
Listen: on SoundCloud

Critically acclaimed thenewno2 have announced the release of their debut original score and soundtrack for Beautiful Creatures. Beautiful Creatures Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (WaterTower Music) will be available February 12 both digitally and through all major retailers. The soundtrack features an original score and two unreleased thenewno2 tracks, including Run To Me with Ben Harper and Liela Moss (The Duke Spirit) as well as Never Too Late also featuring Liela Moss. Beautiful Creatures Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the companion to the February 14 theatrical release of Alcon Entertainment’s Beautiful Creatures, directed by Oscar nominee Richard LaGravenese from his adaptation of the first novel in the best-selling series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons, Oscar nominee Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann and Academy Award winner Emma Thompson.

thenewno2 (whose 2012 sophomore album thefearofmissingout was praised by NPR Music for radiating a “restless energy that helps it sound both independent-minded and eager to please”) is led by Grammy Award winner Dhani Harrison, three-time Grammy Award winner Paul Hicks and composer Jonathan Sadoff. Always expanding their collective, thenewno2 enlisted close to a dozen talented musicians to showcase their talents throughout their original score, including Ben Harper, Liela Moss and Tony Hicks (The Hollies), father of Paul Hicks.

thenewno2 created the score over an extensive three-month period in both their hometown studio in Santa Monica, CA and in London, England,  where they recorded in the famed Abbey Road’s Studio 2 with a 54-piece London based orchestra. While this was Harrison’s first time recording at Abbey Road, this was a homecoming for Paul Hicks. His 12-year tenure at Abbey Road included producing Let It Be Naked and working on the acclaimed Beatles re-masters, as well working with artists such as Paul Weller, Manic Street Preachers and Placebo.

In dreaming up the score, LaGravenese wanted a sound for Beautiful Creatures that he had not heard before.  thenewno2 delivered a melody-driven soundscape that infused electronica and modern rock with a Southern Gothic sultriness, creating a new genre they dubbed ‘swamptronica.’ “Their ideas, their excitement and their creativity knocked me out,” says LaGravenese of thenewno2. Marveling at the score’s melodic power and richness of sound, LaGravenese deems thenewno2 no mere musical outfit, but “three composers forming one unit, each with a distinct, savant-like talent, with equal parts genius and madness.”

In anticipation of the release, the band is currently streaming Never Too Late. Listen and embed via SoundCloud or www.thenewno2.com.

Legendary, but never-before-released Rolling Stones film is made available

Box set release (Blu-ray / DVD / CD): Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 by The Rolling Stones
Release date: 5 November 2012
Label: ABKCO/Universal

ABKCO Films/Universal Music Catalogue are proud to join in the celebration of the Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary by announcing exclusive details of the release of the legendary, but never before officially released film, The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965. The film marked the cinematic debut of the band, and will be released in Super Deluxe Box Set, Blu-ray and DVD configurations worldwide on November 5.

The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 was shot on a quick weekend tour of Ireland just weeks after (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction hit #1 in the charts and became the international anthem for an entire generation. Charlie is my Darling is an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the young Rolling Stones, featuring the first professionally filmed concert performances of the band’s long and storied touring career, documenting the early frenzy of their fans and the riots their live performances incited.

Charlie is my Darling - Ireland 1965 showcases dramatic concert footage – including electrifying performances of The Last Time, Time Is On My Side and the first ever concert performance of the Stones counterculture classic, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. Candid, off-the-cuff interviews are juxtaposed with revealing, comical scenes of the band goofing around with each other. It’s also an insider’s glimpse into the band’s developing musical style blending blues, R&B and rock-n-roll riffs, and the film captures the spark about to combust into The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.

The film was produced by Stones’ manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham who enlisted director Peter Whitehead to travel with the group and film them as (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction rocketed the band to the pinnacle of the U.S. and U.K. charts. Whitehead, who would later capture “swinging London” in Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London, crafted a 35-minute version of the film (director’s cut) that would surface, from time to time over the years, usually seen with grainy visuals and out of phase music. Later, Oldham put together a 50-minute producer’s cut that was first seen in the 1980s. As noted, both the director’s and producer’s cut are part of the DVD, Blu-ray and Super Deluxe Charlie is my Darling release.

The GRAMMY® winning team of producer Robin Klein and director Mick Gochanaur developed the new 65 minute version after researching and locating additional film footage shot by Whitehead and uncovering a source of first generation audio recordings of the band’s concert performances. Painstaking work was done on restoring the footage to come up with the new film that offers a coherent narrative and gives the viewer unprecedented access to the Rolling Stones’ original line-up – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones and Bill Wyman – on stage live and captured, literally, in trains, planes and automobiles as well as backstage and in smoky hotel rooms where they candidly discuss their future. Never-before-seen footage of the band’s early songwriting process is also included as motel rooms host impromptu songwriting sessions and familiar classics are heard in their infancy as riff and lyric are united.

The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 Super Deluxe Box Set  includes both DVD and Blu-ray discs that incorporate the new 2012 version of the film as well as the director’s cut and producer’s cut, plus significant unseen additional performance and other footage shot in Dublin and Belfast in September of 1965, bonus content. The set also includes two audio CDs, one of which is the film’s soundtrack album and the other a compilation of 13 live recordings the band made over the course of their 1965 UK tour.  A 10” vinyl record of the live material is also part of the package, as well as a replica poster heralding the September 4, 1965 date they played in Belfast. The Super Deluxe box is housed in an ingeniously designed luxurious “soft touch” package, each featuring one of over 200 Limited Edition numbered and enlarged cells randomly inserted from the film. There is also a stunning 42 page Collector’s Edition hardcover book that includes 14 never before seen, and painstakingly restored exclusive photographs, including the key art, of the band from the Irish Photo Archive/Lensmen Photo Archive as well as colour photos taken by Marc Sharatt, the Stones’ tour photographer. Reprints of vintage newspaper and magazine articles from the UK and Irish press that offer accounts of the dates and attendant mayhem are included as are essays from American rock journalist and Rolling Stone Magazine staffer David Fricke and GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winning Irish singer/songwriter/actor Glen Hansard. A featured recollection from Reverend Donor Macneice, who was recently located living in Thailand and whose attendance at the ’65 Belfast show nearly cost him his job after he was spotted on the local news is also part of the package.

Both individual Blu-ray and DVD editions of the package mirror the discs featured in the Super Deluxe Box comprising the 2012 version, the director’s cut and the producer’s cut. Simultaneously, there will also be a digital-only release of the 2012 edition of The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965.

The world premiere of The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 will take place this Friday, September 29 at the 50th New York Film Festival with Andrew Loog Oldham in attendance.

November 2012 broadcast premieres are being scheduled for the US and the UK, as well as worldwide theatrical screenings.

O Brother Where Art Thou? - Deluxe Edition

Album release: O Brother Where Art Thou? - Deluxe Edition
Release date: August 29, 2011
Label: Universal

It has been a decade since one of the most unlikely successes in music history was released. O Brother, Where Art Thou? is one of the 10 top-selling soundtracks of all time (according to the RIAA), the No. 1-selling soundtrack and the 17th biggest album of the 21st Century, with more than nine million albums sold. On August 29, Universal will celebrate this 10th Anniversary with an expanded two-CD set, O Brother, Where Art Thou? – Deluxe Edition, with legendary original producer T Bone Burnett personally involved in all aspects of this release.

The album that rocketed bluegrass, roots and even Americana music from the 20th Century into the new millennium features a 14-track bonus disc.  Twelve of these newly-released songs were recorded during original sessions for the film, most of which went unheard on-screen. This release marks the first time these tracks have been made available in any format.
Produced by 12-time GRAMMY® Award- and Academy Award-winner T Bone Burnett, the original O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack from the 2000 film — written, directed and produced by the Coen Brothers and starring George Clooney — shot to No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 and Country charts and became a bona fide music phenomenon, despite scant radio airplay.  Along with 'Album of the Year' honors, the album won GRAMMYs® for I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow performed by Dan Tyminski, Harley Allen and Pat Enright, and O Death by the legendary Dr. Ralph Stanley.

The second disc of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? – Deluxe Edition features artists who appeared on the original album (John Hartford, Norman Blake, the Fairfield Four, the Cox Family and the Peasall Sisters) plus some who did not (Colin Linden, Alan O’Bryant, Ed Lewis and Van Dyke Parks). The disc’s previously recorded tracks are Tom Devil by Ed Lewis and the Prisoners, and I’ll Fly Away by the Kossoy Sisters.

The music from O Brother, Where Art Thou? spawned an award-winning hit album and a groundbreaking Nashville concert.  The resulting documentary film of that show, Down From The Mountain, led to another GRAMMY®-winning album and a sold-out U.S. tour.  A decade later, this landmark album, alternate versions of many of its songs, and other recordings from the film have been brought together for the first time to introduce new fans to this great music and reward longtime fans with a new treasure trove of musical gems from the original sessions.

Paul: music from the motion picture

Paul: Music From The Original Motion Picture
Feb 21 2011, Universal Music

In the comedy-adventure Paul, two best friends Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) have saved for decades to take a sci-fi fan’s trip of a lifetime: a pilgrimage to America’s UFO heartland to track legendary hot spots of extraterrestrial activity. But when a close encounter with an alien named Paul derails the plans…their dream vacation turns into a road trip that will rock their universe forever.

Hunted by federal agents and the fanatical father of Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig of Date Night, Knocked Up), a young woman whom they have accidentally kidnapped, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling plan to return Paul to his mother ship in one piece. And as two nerds fight to help save an awesome little green man, Paul might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Directed by Gregg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) and from a screenplay written by frequent collaborators Pegg & Frost, Paul co-stars an impressive comedic supporting lineup that includes Jason Bateman (Hancock), Bill Hader (Pineapple Express), Blythe Danner (Little Fockers), Joe Lo Truglio (Role Models), John Carroll Lynch (Get Smart), Jane Lynch (Glee), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) and Sigourney Weaver (Avatar).

Of course no road movie is complete without a batch of great songs designed to keep the heart pumping, and Paul certainly delivers. In keeping with the well documented love of sci-fi that both Pegg and Frost share, each track has some link to science fiction. It is a more than diverse collection of classics from a range of genres such as punk (Another Girl Another Planet – The Only Ones), soul (Just The Two Of Us – Bill Withers and Grover Washington Jr., Got To Give It Up - Marvin Gaye), rock 'n' roll (Flying Saucers Rock N Roll - Bill Lee Riley), 70s pop/rock (Hello It’s Me - Todd Rundgren, Dancing In The Moonlight - King Harvest, All Over The World - ELO), reggae (I Chase The Devil – Max Romeo) and the 50s sci-fi inspired Planet Clare by B52’s. The film also features Cantina Band’s Syd Masters & The Swing Riders, a rock-a-billy cover of the music playing in the bar on Tatooine in Star Wars: A New Hope – Simon Pegg’s favourite film.

The collection also features exerts from David Arnold’s original score. The complete track listing is as follows:

1. PAUL OPENING TITLE  - David Arnold
2. ANOTHER GIRL ANOTHER PLANET – THE ONLY ONES
3. ROAD TRIP NUMBER 1 - David Arnold
4. JUST THE TWO OF US - BILL WITHERS & GROVER WASHINGTON JR.
5. PASSPORT - David Arnold
6. ROAD TRIP NUMBER 2 - David Arnold
