Stillness and Panic - third album from Hanne Kolstø

Album release: Stillness and Panic by Hanne Kolstø
Release date: 7 May 2014
Label: Jansen Plate Production
Listen on: official Hanne Kolstø website

Hanne Kolstø maintains her frequency and releases her third solo album in three years. She also keeps the core of her music, the musical landscape in which everything is allowed: electronica, noise, acoustic guitar, loops, sounds of burning rubber and her father’s brass band in Sykkylven, Norway. This enchanting ugly-beautiful sound has made her a favourite with the critics, and also landed her a nomination for the Norwegian Grammy award in the “Best pop album in 2012” category.

Stillness and Panic was recorded with old marching band instruments and pianos in her childhood home and the chapel where she once started as a soloist in the children’s choir. The soundscape is bigger than on any other Kolstø record, but her voice and lyrics are indisputably at the core of her music.

This music was written after Kolstø moved to the west of Norway, to Sunnmøre, and took a few months off from her otherwise continuous touring during the past few years. The silence, and the reflections made on long, solitary hikes alone in the alps of Sunnmøre, western Norway, are apparent in deeply personal lyrics and in the album’s title.

Like the two previous albums, this one is produced by Øyvind Røsrud Gundersen.

Acclaimed electronic blues duo Vienna Ditto to release new EP

EP release: Ugly by Vienna Ditto
Release date: 14 October 2013
Listen: on Bandcamp.

Female-fronted electronic blues duo Vienna Ditto will be releasing their new EP, Ugly on Monday 14th October on Ubiquity Project Records as a free download.

The 3-track EP blends their country blues and gospel influences with primitive ‘voodoo electronics’ and clattering junk percussion (instruments used include a 57 foot narrowboat), bringing Juke House to the Juke Joint.

The band members, Hatty Taylor and Nigel Firth, first met when he started teaching her guitar around 2000, when she was 11. The lazy tyke never practiced but did have a most arresting voice. After a couple of years they lost touch, but bumped into each other in the street in 2009.

They recorded an electronic version of Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire the next week, and the week after one of their own compositions, Long Way Down, which somehow ended up being played on Huw Stephens’ Radio One show. An appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival followed and the band have since been given a Maida Vale session for Tom Robinson on BBC6 and have appeared on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks Music Show.

They have been given airplay on Radio One, BBC6 Music and XFM and received glowing reviews in Q Magazine, Artrocker and The Fly. Their last single I Know His Blood was made a single of the year by Nightshift Magazine, BBC Berks and BBC Oxford and they were made unsigned band of the year 2012 by The Ocelot.

Reaction

  • “With Smoky-voiced femme fatale Hatty Taylor on vocals, London-based three piece Vienna Ditto mix wild-eyed rockabilly riffs with sparse, atmospheric electronica.” Q Magazine
  • “Exceptional...a breathtaking musical melting-pot that almost defies definition.” Fortitude Magazine
  • “Portishead doing a Tarantino soundtrack” Huw Stephens, Radio 1
  • “Fantastically dirty… one of the catchiest choruses l’ve ever heard… made me want to dance round my bedroom with my hairbrush” The Fly Magazine

Listen: get free download taster ‘Endless Fantasy

Anamanaguchi is an explosive New York City indie/dance hacker boy band that dreams of playing pop punk at raves. They use vintage video game hardware - and they do it really well. So they decided they should unleash their anthemic electronic in the UK, release the album proper on Alcopop! Records (Johnny foreigner/ Fight Like Apes) and introduce themselves to our lucky nation for a long weekend in September.

Almost selling out downstairs at The Garage off the back of a single tweet and facebook message, the band decided to add a select few dates, stick a toe in the cold British waters – and play the following dates:
  • 13th September: Superbyte Festival: Manchester Jabez Clegg
  • 14th September: Southsea Festival (Alcopop! Vs BSM Stage headliners at Edge of the Wedge)
  • 15th September: London Garage
  • 16th September: Brighton The Haunt
In celebration, they’re also releasing a new free download, taken from the album: Endless Fantasy.

Boasting an incredible fanbase who raised them over $277k via kickstarter fund in just 30 days, Endless Fantasy hit Number 1 in the US Billboard Heatseekers chart in the US alongside an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, with former credits including the Scott Pilgrim Video Game soundtrack (which debuted at Heatseekers Number 3) and a track on video game Rock Band.

Taking their roles as the ultimate rave boy band seriously, Anamanaguchi have got it all sorted out. Ary is the kind of poster-boy cool Select readers wouldda drooled over, Luke is the edgy party dude, Pete wields strong dance-floor grooves like deadly weapons, and James does tech wizadry the smart kids will LOVE (he’s responsible for all the DIY sound-and-light electronics the band uses). Take That and ANAMANAGUCHI.

Anamanaguchi are: Lead songwriter Peter Berkman, bassist James DeVito, guitarist Ary Warnaar and drummer Luke Silas.

Reaction to date

  • “8-bit synths and appropriately fuzzed-out beats” – Pitchfork
  • “awesome overload that has to power to make both eyes and smiles widen” – theneedledrop.com
  • “Endless Fantasy is a "rad" experience. It's fun, it's fast, it's full of energy and life, and it's what chiptune should really be” – Muzik Discovery

  • “There's an addictive quality to an album like this”– The 405

Anamanaguchi: “8-bit synths and appropriately fuzzed-out beats” – Pitchfork

Album release: Endless Fantasy by Anamanaguchi
Release date: 30 September 2013
Label: Alcopop!
Listen: on official Anamanaguchi website

Anamanaguchi are an American chiptune indie rock band made up of hackers and producers born & raised on the Internet from New York City. They make "loud, fast music with a NES from 1985” - and they do it amazingly well.

Boasting an incredible fanbase who raised them over $100k kickstarter fund in under 24 hours, with former credits including the Scott Pilgrim Video Game soundtrack (which debuted at Number 3 on Billboard Heatseekers Chart) and a track on video game Rock Band, September sees the release of their new album Endless Fantasy worldwide.

Anamanaguchi started in Pete Berkman’s basement in the suburbs of New York where Weezer, snacks and Super Nintendo lived in equal rotation. At 15, he began experimenting with creating punk music using an 8-bit NES. Following bass player James DeVito to NYU’s Music Technology program, Pete met Ary Warnaar who grew up in LA on raves, fashion and lazer tag. Ary began writing for the band, lending a more academic electronic-influence to Berkman’s capricious pop sensibilities. Later that year Luke joined as the band’s drummer via a MySpace message and then the band had fully formed.

Anamanaguchi is serious about being happy. They’re part of a wave of young Internet romantics, nostalgic for a future they know may never come, but can see the seeds of it in the beauty that surrounds them. They’re making emotional dance music for the video game generation and aren’t afraid to claim it. Anamanaguchi was born past cynicism and indifference; they’re in love with the universe and aim to celebrate magic-made-real with their music. The band is interested in breathing life into low-tech machines and making expressive, emotional melodies using the simplest, rawest electronic tones available.

Anamanaguchi is what the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would’ve been if they were a boy band. Ary is cool but rude, Luke is a party dude, Pete leads, and James does machines (he’s responsible for all the DIY sound-and-light electronics the band uses).

Their upcoming album Endless Fantasy is about reality and dreams, being young and searching for agency in an infinite existence. Its 22-tracks explore dreamworlds of all kinds from polygon forests, to Tokyo drifting hills at 100mph, to the lifestream from Final Fantasy VII.

They teamed up with editors from Tim & Eric to make their first music video, Meow – a fever dream version of The Warriors set in the perfect arcade. The video lives as a David Lynch by-way-of John Hughes ode to the victorious feeling of suburban escapism through friends and fun.

Anamanaguchi are lead songwriter Peter Berkman, bassist James DeVito, guitarist Ary Warnaar and drummer Luke Silas.

Black Onassis - Desensitized: new album from former Kasabian member out 23 September.

Album Release: Desensitized by Black Onassis
Release date: 23 September 2013
Label: Minus Man Records
Listen: on official Black Onassis website

Black Onassis is the new project of former Kasabian member Chris Karloff. As a founding member, lead guitarist and one of the chief songwriters for Kasabian throughout their swift ascent to global fame, Karloff admits it was a kick in the teeth to leave the band back in 2006. But now he’s joined forces with NYC musician Nick Forde as well as a host of special guest vocalists to enjoy some new-found creative freedom.

After his departure from Kasabian, Chris left his native home of Leicester, England to move to New York City – a completely different change of pace. Still feeling the burn from the separation, he used that, along with the influences of his new home, as inspiration to form something different. Something that gave him a chance to express himself more freely and be as openly creative as he liked. Karloff’s signature dance-laden songwriting has endured with a subtle sonic shift as he is now able to freely express his own compelling influences, from the stylistically metropolitan symphonics of Parisian house, krautrock and trance hypnoticism, to the classic sound of those acts which have become emblazoned in music history – all firmly anchored in interesting melodic structures and delivered with professional musicianship. Karloff has carefully constructed an album that expertly mixes psychedelic guitar rock with propulsive, throbbing electronic beats.

"'Electronic music to me is surprisingly soulful, there is a warmth that comes from the simplicity of sounds, something inconspicuously expressive and emotional," he says. "Growing up it was everywhere. Artists like Vangelis, Kraftwerk, The Prodigy and Tangerine Dream were massive influences on the songs I wrote with Kasabian, and even more so now. But rock music has always played a massive role as well, and I'm inspired by artists like Jimi Hendrix, Primal Scream and Nirvana. I try to fuse these two worlds to create the kind of music I want to listen to".

Karloff creates this sound with help from NYC musician and good friend Nick Forde (bass, keyboards) and rather than opting for a traditional lineup with a lead singer, they chose to work with guest vocalists. Lines went out to Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit, Morgan Kibby of M83 / White Sea, Ben Gautrey of The Cooper Temple Clause / Type Two Error, and friend Steven Young of The Black Marquee.

"Working with multiple singers makes writing every track a unique experience, a new musical adventure” says Chris. “A voice can change the whole dynamic of a song, and it's really freeing and feels limitless to write without being constrained by the vocal abilities or stylings of one person."

When it came time to start playing live, Black Onassis knew their unconventional lineup could pose a problem. To compensate for the fact that they would be touring with no singer, the band incorporate a huge visual element to the show. As Chris explains, "The fusion of sight and sound is the perfect marriage in terms of stimulation, and we wanted to put a lot of thought into making it an overall experience for our fans." The band teamed up with filmmakers and visual artists to put together a presentation that is tailor-made for each song. The result is an extreme and elaborate visual and sonic environment that floods the senses and takes people on a 60 minute journey through the album.

The project has already drawn critical intrigue. Innocence Blitz had NME heavily tipping the project as one to watch, while Mojo featured the band very early on. Having taken the necessary time to nurture it independently, Chris Karloff and his new band of brothers are ready to officially release. Desensitized comes out September 23 on their own label Minus Man Records.

‘[Chris Karloff] is, sonically speaking, something of an approaching mastermind […] there's something quite meaty about his new tunes’ – Matt Wilkinson, NME

The Capsules: 'Northern Lights & Southern Skies' out June 24

Album release: Northern Lights & Southern Skies by The Capsules
Release date: June 24, 2013
Listen: on Youtube

The Capsules have a tendency to have sleepless nights and write pensive, late-night reveries. When they emerge from these states, they bring with them a soundtrack to the half forgotten memories that pass through the space between reality and whimsy.

The songs on Northern Lights & Southern Skies unfold in the place where the heart is open to the mysteries of the universe and help us gain a bit of insight into the experiences of love, loss, and longing that makes us human. Julie Shields has a comforting voice that sounds like your best friend whispering in your ear, while the melodic bass of Jason Shields and Kevin Trevino’s understated drumming keep things deceptively simple.

The Capsules decided to expand their pallet on Northern Lights & Southern Skies and used less guitar and more keyboards, loops and electronics than they have on previous efforts. They still have their otherworldly aura, but there’s also a dark edge that keeps everything rooted to the earth.

Jason and Julie started writing music together in high school. In the process, they fell in love, got married, and started their first band, which was called Shallow. At an age when most people are trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives, they were already signed, professional musicians touring the world.

After Shallow ended, Julie and Jason continued writing, looking for a drummer to compliment their lush, bright pop lullabies. Kevin Trevino had been a fan of Shallow and, after a few rehearsals under the newly formed name The Capsules, the trio clicked. They started touring, making records and winning fans, including Steven Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, who asked them to write a song for the show. Their songs have also been used in several video games, including the megahit Borderlands 2. They have shared the stage with lot of great acts including The Flaming Lips, Garbage, Low, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Pinback, Juliana Hatfield, and The Mountain Goats.

Look out for videos for Across the Sky and Our Apocalypse, then they’ll be playing select dates while they continue to explore new sonic territory that will allow them to take their heart wrenching visions into even more exciting musical and emotional dimensions.

'Portishead doing a Tarantino soundtrack' - acclaimed duo Vienna Ditto release debut EP

EP release: Liar Liar by Vienna Ditto
Release date: 22 April 2013
Listen: on Bandcamp

Recorded in a chilly boat, a dank basement and an old temperance hall, Vienna Ditto’s debut EP, Liar Liar, is a DIY diary of their first, turbulent, two years. Recorded and produced by the band themselves, the tapes were then rescued and mixed by Umair Chaudhry at Silver St Studios. The result is intelligent yet memorable, spooky but accessible electronica mixed with dirty guitar riffs – or, as Radio 1’s Huw Stephens puts it, ‘Portishead doing a Tarantino Soundtrack’.

The band – comprising vocalist Hatty Taylor and guitarist Nigel Firth – jerked into life in April 2009 when a hastily-recorded demo from their second rehearsal was played on Huw Stephen’s Radio One show. An appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury 2009 followed, as did a Maida Vale session for Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music and an appearance on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks Music Show.

Released in November 2009, their debut single Long Way Down gained airplay on Radio One, BBC6 Music and XFM, and was given glowing reviews in Q Magazine, Artrocker and The Fly. The band are currently working on their debut album.

Berlin electro meets Buenos Aire tango in 'Tangowerk' by NHOAH

Album release: Tangowerk by NHOAH
UK release: March 11 2013
Label: R.O.T Records
Listen: on official site

Tangowerk is esteemed Berlin producer Nhoah’s first solo album. Having previously collaborated with the likes of successful German rock band Mia. and the Pogues, he has paved out a successful career as a producer, creating gold and platinum records. Now, fusing personally treasured cultures, Nhoah brings together Berlin electronic music and Buenos Aires tango for a highly expressive debut.

From this passionate collision between two worlds, Nhoah has created a multi-faceted album, with tango orchestration, synthpop, shellac sounds and electronic stylings. In the 1980’s Nhoah quickly became fascinated with using computers to manipulate the gramophone sounds of his childhood, recreating them with analogue radio techniques and close harmony effects. His evolution into glamour was via synthesizers and his time in Berlin's gay and transvestite scenes, hence the androgyny and eroticism of the Tangowerk model - the pull of traditional tango, offset by the explosive energy of electronica, with theatrical vocal performances, and authentic passion and longing. Music that easily lends itself to club and dubstep remixes, as exemplified by previous single ‘Innocent’ feat. Lulu Schmidt.

In developing this project, Nhoah enlisted friends, artists and agitators from the Berlin music and art scene. In Buenos Aires, they searched for the highest degree of artistic collaboration and found it in an intense creative process that moves from meetings with Argentinian musicians, to extraordinary studio sessions, to late night odysseys through tango and burlesque clubs.

An interesting listen on record certainly, but when taken to the stage Tangowerk turns into a spectacle. Between three and twelve musicians and dancers accompany Nhoah in performance with exalted costumes and advanced video animations. All the while the ears are educated in the compatible mix of electronic club sounds and tango rhythm. 58 minutes of video content available in the ‘CD + DVD’ package, featuring official videos, tango dance performances and a ‘making of’, is necessary in realising the true aesthetic of Tangowerk.

Having already been released in Germany, Nhoah has reached worthy critical acclaim for Tangowerk. It was nominated for the “German record prize” and the “ECHO newcomer of the year.”

Watch the video for ‘Ob Ich Dir Treu Sein Kann’ (‘If I Can Be True To You’) featuring the delightfully whimsical Berlin Comedian Harmonists here. Or watch the subtitled EPK explaining the whole project here.
