The Staple Singers - Faith & Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976

Album release: Faith & Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976 by The Staple Singers
Release date:20 November 2015
Label: UMGI/Concord
More info: Mavis Staples website

UMGI/Concord will release the first-ever comprehensive, career-spanning overview of The Staple Singers, one of the most important American musical acts of the 20th century. Due out November 20th, this limited edition 4-CD box set-titled 'Faith and Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976' -also includes a very special bonus: the earliest known recording of the gospel, soul and R&B group, housed on a 7” vinyl record, marking the first time that this track has been available in any format since the Staples’ self-released edition of 500.

Housed in a deluxe, old-school '45-folio' package, the accompanying book features new liner notes by Mavis Staples, James Miller, Opal Louis Nations and compilation producer Joe McEwen, as well as rarely seen photos of the family band taken over the course of their career.

The long-lost recordings embodied on the 7” record, 'Faith and Grace' and 'These Are They' are the earliest known recordings of The Staple Singers and were made in a friend of Pops Staples’ basement in Chicago in 1953. These have never before been commercially available in any format except the 500 or so copies the Staples pressed themselves on 78 RPM records. The box set also contains the live recording: 'Medley: Too Close/I’m On My Way Home/I’m Coming Home/He’s Alright (Live).' This live performance from 1960 Clarksdale, Mississippi has never before been available in its entirety.

The music of the Staple Singers--best known for their 1970s hits 'Respect Yourself,' 'I'll Take You There,' 'If You're Ready (Come Go with Me),' and 'Let's Do It Again' -is richly embedded into American history and culture. As James Miller writes in the liner notes: 'The Staple Singers are American originals. Like Elvis Presley in the fifties, they took the country gospel sounds of the Mississippi Delta and turned them into a brand new kind of music, a fusion of blues form and raw feeling that was sui generis. Like Bob Dylan in the sixties, they created their own kind of folk music, in part to hymn the progress of the civil rights movement in America. Like Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and Aretha Franklin, they took the music of the black church and made that soulful sound matter to anybody with ears and an open mind in a series of exceptionally popular recordings that made them well-known to a wide audience. And afterwards, even after their belated moment of fame in the early 1970s, their principal members survived into a dignified old age, becoming venerated solo troubadours, performing vernacular American music that sounds as fresh today as it did a half-century ago...The consistency with which this family made rapturous music–as documented on this box set–becomes ever more impressive with the passage of time.'

Explaining The Staple Singers’ special dynamic, notes Miller, 'The group had two primary leads: Pops, a tenor, and Mavis, a skinny girl with a thundering voice. When the Staples harmonized, their blend was high and keening, with Pops singing falsetto alongside his daughter Cleotha, a soprano, and Pervis, a high tenor like his dad, making them sound more like the Carter Family than a conventional black gospel group. Equally unusual was the instrumentation; instead of performing a capella or with keyboard accompaniment, the Staples featured the electric guitar playing of Pops. That’s the first thing you hear on their classic early recordings: finger-picked arpeggios, amplified in a wash of reverb and tremolo, anchoring the bottom of the sound. (‘Pop Staples and his nervous guitar,’ quipped rivals on the gospel circuit.)'

The box set is aptly titled Faithand Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976 as these qualities are hallmarks of The Staple Singers. Their music remains soul-stirring and relevant –these songs bring hope in uncertain times. As always, The Staple Singers take us there.

BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2015 - Lifetime Achievement

LOudon-colr-__.jpg

BBC Radio 2 today announced the recipients of this year’s Radio 2 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The two prestigious lifetime achievement accolades will be presented to legendary musicians Yusuf / Cat Stevens and Loudon Wainwright III at the ceremony which is being held at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff on 22 April. The Good Tradition Award, for an outstanding contribution to the upkeep of a musical tradition, is being presented posthumously to the late Meredydd Evans.

Renowned singer Yusuf / Cat Stevens, who will also be performing at the awards, gained worldwide acclaim for works including Wild World, Father and Son and Morning Has Broken, which remain staples of the folk genre. Following a conversion to the Islamic faith in 1977, Stevens retired from the music business to work with and support causes in education and humanitarian relief. Yusuf / Cat Stevens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2014, subsequently releasing the album, Tell 'Em I'm Gone. Last year also saw Yusuf / Cat Stevens embark upon his acclaimed Peace Train - Late Again international tour, including his first US dates in 38 years.

Al Booth, Editor of Specialist Music, Radio 2 said:

‘To have a musical legend of the calibre of Yusuf performing at the Radio 2 Folk Awards is a testament to the high esteem in which the event is held. I know that everyone in the folk world is looking forward to what promises to be a very special night.’

Grammy Award winning Loudon Wainwright III will also be celebrating his Lifetime Achievement Award with a live performance at the event. He said:

“I'll be happy and gratified, not to mention a bit smug, to receive my award in Cardiff next month. Yes it certainly has seemed like an entire lifetime has whizzed by since the mighty John Peel saturated the UK airwaves in 1969 with my first songs, spinning "School Days" and "The Movies Are a Mother to Me" late at night on BBC Radio.”

Loudon Wainwright III had studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon University, but dropped out to partake in the ‘Summer of Love’ in San Francisco, and wrote his first song Edgar in 1968. He was soon signed to Atlantic Records and was lured by Clive Davis to Columbia Records, which released his first big hit Dead Skunk. His songs have since been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and his son Rufus Wainwright and daughter Martha Wainwright. An accomplished actor, he has appeared in films directed by Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton, on TV in M.A.S.H. and Undeclared, and on Broadway in Pump Boys and Dinettes.

The 2015 Radio 2 Folk Awards will also pay tribute to the late Dr Meredydd Evans, who passed away in February 2015 at the age of 95, with a Good Tradition Award. The Good Tradition Award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to UK folk music. Meredydd’s wide-ranging contributions as a singer, historian, broadcaster and Welsh language campaigner made him a significant, respected and popular figure across Welsh culture. He recorded for the Sain label in Wales and made a classic album of Welsh songs for the American label Smithsonian Folkways during the 1950s. He was Head of Light Entertainment at BBC Wales, working both behind and in front of the camera and an important collector of Welsh traditional song. He will be posthumously honoured and there will be a special tribute performance to him by the 10 Mewn Bws, (10 in a Bus) a project that saw ten young Welsh musicians travel around Wales in an attempt to reinterpret and demystify traditional Welsh music.

The Folk Awards are hosted by Radio 2 Folk Show presenter Mark Radcliffe alongside Scottish Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis. Folk Singer Of The Year-nominated Julie will also perform on the night. Other performers are modern folk rock band The Rails who are nominated in the Best Album and Horizon Award category for the best emerging act and London based duo Josienne Clark and Ben Walker, singing from their nominated Best Album Nothing Can Bring Back the Hour. The pair has also been nominated in the Best Duo category. Welsh folk band 9Bach, who will sing in Welsh, and English folk singer Kate Rusby complete the live line up for the night.

Star guests who will be handing out some of the gongs on the night include 6 Music’s Cerys Matthews, Gavin and Stacey and Stella actress Ruth Jones and singer songwriter Billy Bragg.

The evening will also see singer, songwriter, record producer, playwright, actor and political activist Ewan MacColl inducted into the Radio 2 Folk Award Hall of Fame. MacColl played a vital role in instigating the folk song revival in Britain and is perhaps best known for his much covered songs ‘Dirty Old Town’ and ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’. Throughout his career MacColl produced around 300 songs and scores of albums and 2015 marks the centenary of his birth.

The Radio 2 Folk show has a weekly audience of 812,000 listeners and BBC Radio 2 has weekly reach of 15.3 million. The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards will be broadcast live from 7.30pm-10pm on Radio 2 and will also be simulcast on BBC Radio Wales. From 10pm to 11pm, BBC Radio Wales will be broadcasting the official after show programme presented by Frank Hennessy.

Listeners will be able to watch highlights of the awards on BBC iPlayer for 30 days after the event and also at a later date on Red Button. For more details head to bbc.co.uk/radio2

The Complete Motown Singles: 1972

Compilation release: Various Artists - The Complete Motown Singles Volume 12A: 1972
Label: Universal
Release date: 1 July

The Complete Motown Singles - the acclaimed, long-running series encompassing every Motown single release of the Detroit era - begins its final phase this year with Volume 12A, a 5-disc set of the company’s output from the first half of 1972. The collection contains 113 remastered tracks with a 130-page book that chronicles the story of the year in which Motown uprooted from Hitsville and moved west.

The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 12A: 1972 features Motown expanding into other creative areas. The Four Tops recorded A Simple Game in London with the Moody Blues, while the Jackson 5 and lead singer Michael respectively covered the 1950s hits Little Bitty Pretty One and Rockin’ Robin. MJ also delivered I Wanna Be Where You Are while Marvin Gaye, a year removed from his landmark album What’s Going On, recorded a politically-tinged single, You’re The Man.

Martha Reeves & the Vandellas released their final single, Tear It On Down. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles began their official goodbye with We’ve Come Too Far To End It Now, while Stevie Wonder had a new beginning, issuing the independently-minded single Superwoman and producing his then-wife, Syreeta. The Commodores, a new group from Alabama, debuted on MoWest with the track The Zoo (The Human Zoo). Jr. Walker & the All Stars hit with the sublime Walk In The Night.

This volume features not only hits and B-sides, but rare tracks from a wide variety of artists: David Ruffin, the Supremes, the Temptations, Undisputed Truth, Blinky, Bobby Darin, the Devastating Affair, Eric & the Vikings, Thelma Houston, Rare Earth, Sisters Love, Edwin Starr, Frankie Valli, and more. And, as is expected in this series, Vol. 12A is in “album” style packaging, with a bonus 7” vinyl single – this time, with two songs by the Blackberries never actually issued as a 45. The book features two essays: an introduction by the twin brothers Russ and Ralph Terrana, two key members of the Motown engineering staff, and an overview by Susan Whitall, a longtime writer for The Detroit News, plus detailed track-by-track histories by co-producers Keith Hughes and Harry Weinger, and Grammy®-nominated Bill Dahl.

Electric Eden: Rob Young’s ground-breaking survey of music making in the British Isles

Album release: Electric Eden (2 CD compilation)
Release date: 20 August 2012
Label: Universal Music Catalogue

Universal Music Catalogue is scheduled to release Electric Eden, a new compilation, hand-picked by author and journalist Rob Young, on August 20th 2012. The two-disc set is designed to serve as a companion to Young’s highly acclaimed book Electric Eden: Unearthing Britain’s Visionary Music which was published by Faber & Faber in 2010.

Just as the book mapped out a native British musical voice that reflected the complex relationships between town and country, progress and nostalgia, radicalism and conservatism, so too does this compilation.

It’s a veritable connoisseur’s choice of folk music which collects together such diverse artists as Archie Fisher, Meic Stevens, Bill Fay, Comus, and Mick Softley, even David Bowie - alongside the more expected names such as Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, The Incredible String Band and Nick Drake.

The two disc set is divided into an Acoustic Eden and an Electric Eden and comes with comprehensive, track-by-track notes by Rob Young.

Rob Young comments: 'This compilation is designed to follow the flow from acoustic to electric folk in the late 60s and early 70s, a magical time in British music. I've tried to include a mixture of rarities, unheard versions, familiar names and unjustly neglected heroes and heroines. I'm particularly proud of including a rare original version of 'A Sailor's Life' by Fairport Convention, literally the first time a rock drum kit was ever used on a traditional folk song. History in the making!'

Universal release Great Expectations - The Football Album

Compilation: Great Expectations - The Football Album
Release date: 14 May 2012
Label: Spectrum Audio / Universal Music

This summer, football fans across the country come together for one of the world’s biggest tournaments – Euro 2012, held this year in Poland and Ukraine. Captured here on CD courtesy of Spectrum Audio and Universal Music is a thorough collection of world football’s most recognizable theme tunes, flag waving classics and terrace anthems. This collection of fan favourites is the soundtrack to the highs, the lows and all the singing in between.

Included on this collection are five Top 10 tracks, including two Number 1s. Below is the track listing with “commentary”.

1. Match of The Day Theme - Sacre
Over the years there may have been many version recorded but football TV coverage is simply incomplete without this.

2. Football, Football – Edmundo Ros
This Latin homage to the beautiful game regularly features in TV coverage and is guaranteed to raise spirits.

3. Mas Que Nada – Sergio Mendes
Another Latin classic and football TV favourite this is the aural equivalent of some exquisite Pele dribbling. Pure class and recorded in the golden year of ’66.

4. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da – The England World Cup Squad
This England World Cup Squad serve up a truly unique version of this Ska influenced Beatles classic.

5. Que Sera Sera – Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band
England supporters know only too well, whatever will be, will be and Dexy’s Midnight Runners favourite Geno knew this too in ’66 when he recorded it.

6. Sportnight Theme – Tony Hatch
Mr Hatch should have been knighted for his services to TV themes in the 60s and 70s. This one from 1974 is one of his many sporting classics.

7. Keep on Running – The Spencer Davis Group
This UK No.1 hit from 1965 has provided the sound bed for more training footage TV features at both club and country level than anyone can remember and one spin explains why.

8. On The Ball Theme – John Schroeder Orchestra
Another classic football TV theme tune, this time from ITV’s Saturday’s lunchtime spot way back (and briefly revisited by Gabby Logan).

9. Jerusalem
This piece needs no introduction but this recent version is class, boasting both the Royal Choral Society and BBC Concert Orchestra.

10. Rule Britannia
Flags out as Della Jones and the BBC Concert Orchestra raise the stakes.

11. Land Of Hope & Glory
Seeing as we’re already standing and waving flags we might as well continue.

12. If the Kids Are United – Sham 69
This muscular summer top 10 hit from 1978 was immediately adopted for terrace chants the next season and it’s easy to hear why.

13. Saturdays Kids – The Jam
The Jam were popular with football fans and this cut, reminiscent of the times features a first verse that includes the line ‘…drink lots of beer and wait for half time results’. Perfect.

14. Lily the Pink – The England World Cup Squad
Talking of beer, this UK No.1 for The Scaffold and subsequent good-humoured terrace favourite gets ‘the team’s’ unique vocal treatment. It’s hard not to sing along.

15. World Cup Willie – Lonnie Donegan
His skiffle records influenced John Lennon whilst this, recorded with some foresight in 1965 sought to humorously benefit from our adventures in ’66. Quality.

16. Nessum Dorma – Luciano Pavarotti
It’s hard to imagine a time when this classic won’t be associated with the World Cup yet it wasn’t always so, recorded as it was way back in 1973.

17. The Dambusters March
Time to reach for the flag again; we’re on the march to the top.

18. Theme from The Great Escape
The nation’s lost count of how many times the boys have played their way into and out of trouble!

19. Celebration – Kool & The Gang
Where’s the champagne, we’ve done it?

20. Come On Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners
The end is nigh, so why not sing along to this UK No.1 and party perennial from ’82.

21. Best In Football Theme – Tony Hatch
Another football TV theme, this with sentiment. The team aim to be and we all hope they will be!

22. There'll Always Be An England – The England World Cup Squad
Thanks for reminding us.

Fine Cuts from Marmalade

Fine Cuts album sleeve

Album Release: Fine Cuts: The Best Of Marmalade
Release Date: 5 September 2011
Label: Salvo

Anyone who ever heard Marmalade play at clubs like the Marquee would know that there is a lot more to Marmalade than the hits ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ and ‘Reflections of My Life’.

Here we find 45 tracks which typify what ‘The Marms’ were all about. There are some great rock tracks like Graham’s ‘Empty Bottles’ and ‘Can You Help Me (very much influenced by the style of Crosby, Stills & Nash / Santana, etc who were everyone’s heroes in the late ‘60’s).

There are also some lovely soft-rock titles that really show off the vocal harmonies, and a great version of Dylan’s ‘I Shall be Released’. Fine Cuts is the Best Of Marmalade!” - Junior Campbell, 2011

We were influenced by many types of music and through all of our recordings runs the thread of quality musicianship. We had some fun times as a group and some of it I still remember. I hope you enjoy “Fine Cuts” as much as I did.” - Dean Ford, Los Angeles, 2011

Scottish group Marmalade formed originally formed in 1961 and are best known for their UK number one cover of the The Beatles' Ob-La-Di, Ob-La Da and the major US hit Reflections Of My Life.

These hits are featured on their new album Fine Cuts, which showcases a total of 45 tracks, also including I See The Rain, Cousin Norman, My Little One and many more…

The album was remastered by Finesplice for the finest possible sound quality. A stylish double digi-pack with 12-page booklet, it contains rare photographs plus a comprehensive overview of Marmalades career written by band members Jnr (William) Campbell and Dean Ford.

The Supremes - Let Yourself Go: The 70s albums Volume 2

Limited Edition: only 5,000 albums available.

Album Release: The Supremes - Let Yourself Go: The 70s Albums, Volume 2 1974-1977, The Final Sessions
Release Date: 27 June 2011
Label:
Universal Music

Ask a Supremes aficionado to name the group members and you can bet they will name more than just the pioneering Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. That’s because the group preserved well into the 1970’s, with several smash hits and a huge, devoted following. Their new 3 CD collection from Hip-o Select.com, Let Yourself Go: The 70s Albums Vol. 2: 1974-1977 The Final Sessions, picks up where This Story: The 70s Albums Vol. 1: 1970 – 1973 The Jean Terrell Years left off. In these great recordings, the dynamic Scherrie Payne shares lead vocals with original member Mary Wilson. Long time Supremes’ favourite Cindy Birdsong is back. And the final Supreme Susaye Greene adds her distinctive vocal style to the trio’s last two albums.

Let Yourself Go includes all of the LP’s from this distinctive era, plus numerous bonus tracks, remastered in their entirety for the first time: The Supremes, featuring No.1 Disco hit He’s My Man; High Energy, which includes the group’s final top-40 pop hit, I’m Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking; and Mary, Scherrie & Susaye, exploding with more than 10 dance floor classics. The long-sought-after previously unreleased recordings from this era include several bonus cuts from the sessions; alternate takes with various lead vocals; and an original, alternate mix of the complete High Energy album. Fans will get a whole new take on some of their favourites. All of this great music is housed in a beautifully designed hardcover “book” package in the same format as Vol.1. Inside is a Supremes’ fan’s dream: extensive liner notes with informative and revealing interviews with Mary Wilson, Scherrie Payne, Cindy Birdsong and Susaye Greene, detailing the fascinating story about the group’s final years together. Brand new quotes from legendary Motown writer/producer Brian Holland and other producers from the era. Thoroughly detailed annotations and the definitive listing of a Supremes’ Who’s-Who. And, of course, more rare and never before seen photographs than in any other Supremes CD collection.

Let Yourself Go: The 70’s Albums Vol.2: 1974 -1977 The Final Sessions is the perfect retrospective for the final chapter of a legendary Motown group.

New Wave of British Heavy Metal

Various Artists
Classic Rock Presents: New Wave of British Heavy Metal
Universal Music
Released: 4 July 2011

That most weighty and patriotic of musical vanguards, the new wave of British metal, now over three decades old, continues to inspire and be a cause for celebration of those glorious days of wanton metal abandon. And to acknowledge that great period in heavy music, Universal/Sanctuary Records has teamed-up with those good folk at Metal Hammer & Classic Rock magazine to forge an illustrious 20-track array of sheer power and metal ferocity.

The names speak for themselves – Saxon, Venom, Diamond Head, Girlschool, Angel Witch, Tygers Of Pan Tang...the list goes on...and just like the scene that first produced these great names, the NWOBHM continues to capture the imagination of Metal fans both old and new. Much like the way Punk broke down barricades just a few years before it, the NWOBHM is held aloft today as an era where enough self-belief and grim determination could take a band to a voracious audience without the need for industry tastemakers and record company marketers relying on consumer forecasts to manipulate their next target market.

Well over 200 bands emerged during this period and many released records on their own labels whilst others such as Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Diamond Head would forge lengthy careers recording for major companies such as, EMI and Mercury. The enthusiasm for heavy metal during this period also helped to revitalise the careers of bands from the previous era – such as Motörhead and Deep Purple’s departing vocalist, Ian Gillan – whilst across the pond, bands such as Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer built their new styles on the foundation of this U.K. scene.

As we begin the second decade of the 21st Century, Heavy Metal music has never been in a healthier state and it is fitting that the NWOBHM, three decades prior, is acknowledged as a period when fans took the music into their own hands and reinforced Heavy Metal as music to a way of life, and not just a fashion.
