Frank Zappa Publicity Photo Apostrophe5x5-no text.jpg

Album reissue: ‘Apostrophe’ by Frank Zappa

Release date: 20 October 2014

Label: Universal

Listen on / more information at: official Frank Zappa website

The Zappa Family Trust presents more freshly remastered music with the 40th Anniversary Edition of Frank Zappa’s Apostrophe (’) on audiophile quality 180-gram vinyl.  Cut directly from the original quarter-inch stereo analogue master tapes, the special edition of the iconic 1974 album will be released on 20 October 2014.

Featuring definitive Zappa cuts “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” and “Cosmik Debris” among its original nine tracks, Apostrophe (’) was Zappa’s highest-charting album, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard 200.  The Gold-certified album has been remastered for vinyl by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering and manufactured for the world at Pallas Group in Germany.

The 40th Anniversary Edition of Apostrophe (’) continues the Zappa Family Trust’s ongoing commitment to the restoration of Frank Zappa’s albums on audiophile quality vinyl.  Joe Travers, Vaultmaster, Zappa Archives, is working on the new LP releases with Bellman.

In 2012, when the rights to the iconic composer’s masters reverted back to Zappa Records and the Zappa Family Trust – headed by Zappa’s widow Gail Zappa – the family made his entire recorded catalogue available on iTunes for the first time and began remastering the albums for reissue on vinyl. Presented with proper care and attention to detail, the releases honor the iconic legacy of the Composer, Guitarist, Bandleader, Filmmaker and Irrepressible Wit.

Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. The official biography: Frank Zappa, American composer, fl. 1940-1993.

Wampire to release new album on 27 October

Wampire Bazaar cover
Wampire Bazaar cover

Album release: “Bazaar” by Wampire

Release date: 27 October

Label: Polyvinyl

Listen on: Wampire official site

Following the release of their debut album, “Curiosity”, in 2013, Wampire went from a duo most accustomed to playing house parties around their hometown of Portland to a five-piece band performing in venues all over the world with groups such as Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Foxygen, and Smith Westerns.

That 12-month span saw Wampire play more shows in more cities, countries, and continents than in all their previous years together combined - a nearly non-stop barrage of new and memorable experiences that, above all else, forced the band members to become more fully immersed in music than at any other time in their lives.

As a result, when founding members and primary songwriters Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps returned home at the tail end of the year, they immediately dove into the process of working on a new album in order to capitalize on the creative energy that had been steadily amassing during their days, weeks, and months on the road.

Says Phipps of that moment in time, “I holed up in a tiny room within a friend’s warehouse and began knocking out as many different songs as I could. I tried not to look back, just wanting to explore everything I could possibly create. I started to feel like I was becoming a Kafka-esque insomniac musical novelist at one point.”

The reference to the German writer is an apt one for a band that has always imbued its disarmingly off-kilter pop with tinges of paranoia and surrealism (both lyrically and musically), but even more fitting is the title of Wampire’s new record: Bazaar.

Like the tantalizing blend of exotic treasures and captivating sensations its namesake suggests, Bazaar continually offers listeners a variety of unexpected and alluring sonic flavors over the course of its nine tracks - ranging from raucous riffs (“Bad Attitude”) to seductive sax (“Wizard Staff”) to charmingly catchy choruses (“The Amazing Heart Attack”).

As with their previous full-length “Curiosity”, Wampire recorded “Bazaar” with trusted producer Jacob Portrait (of Unknown Mortal Orchestra), though this time around the sessions took place at The Museum, a studio in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, and were done directly to tape.

Far from home once again, Tinder and Phipps used the city to their advantage — writing lyrics on the 40-minute bus ride to and from their temporary residence in Bed-Stuy and rushing to a shop down the street to buy a guitar - one that looked and felt like it had been buried in dust for decades and had just the right analog sound - as their allotted studio time was winding down.

Another important change was the addition of touring drummer Thomas Hoganson to the recording and songwriting process. Though Tinder and Phipps had previously sought to minimize distractions in the studio by just working with each other, Hoganson’s diverse musical abilities (in addition to drums, he also plays piano and saxophone on Bazaar) made him an ideal collaborator.

And so, after a year spent in vans and on planes, in European clubs, Australian beaches, and everywhere in between, Wampire emerged with more confidence, a stronger vision, and what is undeniably their best batch of songs to date.

For evidence of this, check out the album’s first single “Wizard Staff” above now and see below for all of the band’s upcoming tour dates, including a September run with Temples. Bazaar will be available on CD, LP (Polyvinyl e-store limited edition of 300 on 180-gram clear purple, black), cassette and digitally.

Dearly Beloved announce more UK and European dates

dearly-beloved-tour.jpg

Tour announcement: Dearly Beloved, UK and Europe

Dates: Sept - Oct 2014

More information: on Dearly Beloved website

Dearly Beloved is a monster of a band. Echoing through the snowy valleys and the jagged edges of the Great White North come the rapid, urgent bass lines of Rob Higgins and the confrontational wails of co-vocalist Niva Chow. The pair drive their music forward like an apocalyptic oil tanker from some Mad Max-ian dystopic future. Bred for the road like a rabid beast, Dearly Beloved tours non-stop, opting for frequent jumps across the pond to the UK and Europe when their home base of Canada simply becomes too small for their ferocity.

Although fully-fledged progenitors of the stoner rock tradition, their influence has as much to do with Fear and Black Flag as it does Kyuss and Black Sabbath, mixing the speed and primal energy of hardcore punk with the brooding and psychedelic atmosphere of those in the stoner camp. All you need to know about Dearly Beloved is that they create a gigantic rumble, resonating somewhere deep within the earth below you: it shakes the foundations of your soul, and it might be one of the loudest sounds you’ve ever heard.

Their latest album Enduro, available on LP worldwide via Aporia Records, was recorded in ten maniacal days at Joshua Tree’s Rancho de la Luna, overseen by Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal, ex-Queens of the Stone Age) with Higgins himself at the controls. The band spent another ten at Phoebe St., their own studio in Toronto, to finish tracking before the album was given a pristine mix down in Seattle by Grammy Award-winning producer, Adam Kasper (Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam). Enlisting an A-grade line-up of contributors such as Chris Goss (Masters of Reality) for some trebly and frantic guitar duties and Los Angeles-area drum guru Dave Elitch (Killer Be Killed, Antemasque, ex-Mars Volta) as well as Canadian indie rock lone wolf, Eamon McGrath, the record is a document of the ballistic energy laid to wax when four Canadians leave their winter climate for a psychedelic and drug-fuelled experience deep within the heart of the High Desert.

Like the band itself, Enduro is road tested: Higgins broke the record in at full volume, blasting through the Mojave at top-speed to make sure the message was being accurately sent, right before returning home to Toronto to begin his rigid touring schedule. It’s a record built for breaking boundaries, both physical - volume, speed, strength - and musical, in the way it effortlessly mixes countless genres that all have one thing in common: that they’re as loud as fuck.

Pablo Clements and James Griffith (UNKLE) release new mini album as Toydrum

toydrum.jpg

Mini-album release: Distant Focus Volume 1 by Toydrum

Release date: 29 September 2014

Format: Digital / Limited edition 12” heavy weight vinyl

Label: Underscore

“A mad professor whose obsession with discovering obscure music from every corner of the world is a constant source of inspiration“. - James Lavelle

“The TOY ROOMS is a great studio run by great people. Full of Pablo Clements’s endless collection of musical toys, the Toy Rooms has become our studio heartland.”  - Nick Cave

“Along with Weatherall  I think Pablo Clements is one of the most creative musical minds I’ve met from my generation. “ - David Holmes

While James Lavelle has put UNKLE on hold, Pablo Clements and James Griffith, members of the seminal project since 2007, have forged a new musical partnership, TOYDRUM and are based in their own studio in Brighton, the TOY ROOMS. They produce and compose for an eclectic mix  of projects. They are releasing their first Mini Album on their own UNDERSCORE label on 29September.

Pablo Clements began his musical career with the PSYCHONAUTS while growing up in Yeovil Somerset, amidst a burgeoning breakbeat revival in nearby Bristol. Pablo and his musical partner Paul Mogg spun, scratched and mixed their way on to the decks of the local pirate radio station and were soon running their own club nights, recording music and compiling mix tapes.

Legend has it that one of these tapes was the only earthly possession that their Yeovil pal Tim Goldsworthy (original UNKLE member/co-founder of the MO’WAX record label) had left after he and his luggage had been separated in transit from London to Los Angeles. Attending a party thrown by the Beastie Boys, Goldsworthy played the PSYCHONAUTS tape. Almost instantly, their world went crazy. They were offered four major record deals before they had properly recorded a single piece of music.  Deciding to sign with MO’WAX, they took their time settling into their craft and playing spectacular DJ shows with four record decks and a sampler.  LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, has cited debut PSYCHONAUTS album “Songs for Creatures” as a major influence on their own work.

Moving to London in 1996, Pablo Clements began to work regularly for MO’WAX as a mixer and multi-instrumentalist. He officially became a member of UNKLE in 2007, co-producing their “War Stories“ (July 2007) album. Alongside bassist and guitarist James Griffith (BIG IN JAPAN & LAKE TROUT) they toured the world, and over the next few years saw a number of UNKLE releases that they were creatively responsible for: ‘More Stories (January 2008),  ‘End Titles Stories For Film’ (July 2008),  ‘End Titles Redux’ (December 2008) ‘Where Did The Night Fall’ (May 2010) and ‘Where Did The Night Fall Another Night Out (April 2011) featuring collaborations with Ian Astbury, Queen Of The Stone Age, Nick Cave, The Black Angels, Mark Lanagan, Sleepy Sun and many more.

Both Clements and Griffith have extensive musical histories spanning many collaborations and projects, and they continue as a prolific and productive force at the TOY ROOMS studio today. The upcoming mini-album is the first of a series of releases which comprehensively demonstrates their continued creativity and ability to deliver music that matters.

New album from Adam Cohen: We Go Home

Adam Cohen's We Go Home - album cover
Adam Cohen's We Go Home - album cover

Album release: “We Go Home” by Adam Cohen

Release date: 15 September 2014

Label: Cooking Vinyl

Listen on: Adam Cohen website

“I thought I’d learned my lesson on the last record. Apretty towering lesson. That what’s most important to me are my roots, my family, my home and ultimately ‘knowing thyself’.”

Three years ago and three albums into a career that began with his 1998 self-titled debut, Cohen decided that he and the music business should call it quits. Talked into giving it one last go, he released his best and biggest album to date. Like A Man (2011) was an elegant, intimate beauty. His songs, performed on a nylon-string guitar, both had a deep connection and engaged in deep personal conversation with one of his greatest musical influences, Leonard Cohen. Adam’s father. As MOJO said, this was an album in which Adam Cohen “set about a quiet rapprochement with his DNA.” It was also, as Leonard Cohen said, an album of “world-class love songs.” A critical and commercial success, it brought Adam a gold album, a long world tour and great anticipation for the follow-up.

In a break between concerts, he went into the studio and emerged with a new album, which he scrapped. It didn’t feel honest. “I realized that I needed desperate measures to keep me honest and also to relieve me of the anxiety of following up the only successful record I’ve ever made. However deliciously I had been in orbit, touring with that record, I needed to tap into something more terrestrial, more rooted and real.”

We Go Home, Cohen’s fifth album, is by all definitions homemade. He recorded his songs in rooms as familiar to him as his name. Since the band was playing in Europe, Adam decided to set up shop in the little white house on the Greek island of Hydra where he had spent much of his childhood. “Making an album in the comfort of home on makeshift equipment with this band of touring musicians who had become my family immediately offered a beacon of hope that no studio, or session players or priceless gear ever could.” They continued recording in Montreal, where Adam was born, in the house where he spent his earliest years. “I knew I was painting a target on my back, making my album in the so-called homes of Leonard Cohen, but they’re my homes too. These are the walls that saw me grow up the most and that I needed to come back to. My muse is my home”

Some of the themes on We Go Home continue the conversation that Like A Man began. “I want the songs to speak for themselves”, says Cohen, “but what I can say is that the songs on this record mostly chronicle conversations I’ve either had with my old man, or want to have with my boy”, Adam’s seven-year-old son Cassius, “and a few conversations I’m having with myself. And, of course, there are love songs.” What’s different is the tone—richer and fuller this time, more diverse, making the most of the three-piece band and three-piece string section from his tour. The nylon-string guitar is still there, but there are also piano songs - the title track’s tenderness and self-mocking humour recalling one of Cohen’s other great musical influences Randy Newman.

“My last album was about me finally claiming my belonging to a tradition and finding my voice within that tradition. My new album,” Adam Cohen states, “is about me raising my voice.”

We Go Home is released in September. Adam Cohen’s European tour, featuring the band and string section, begins in Denmark, culminating in a concert at London’s Bush Hall on 15th October.

New track from Nai Harvest

Stream: “Buttercups” by Nai Harvest
Release date: available now
Label: Topshelf Records
Listen: on Soundcloud | Consequence of Sound

Indie-rock two-piece Nai Harvest (signed to Topshelf Records) return with “Buttercups”, their most overtly melodic track yet, and one that pays as many dues to the likes of Ride, Chapterhouse, early Superchunk, classic lo-fi and dreampop as it does the fiery emo and punk spirit of their previous output.

It’s a song about distance, and trying to be fair and honest with someone you’re in love with who lives far away but you’re not in a legitimate relationship with. You’re allowed to do what you want with whoever you want but do you really want to do it or not?

Sounding, as ever, a whole lot bigger than just the two of them, “Buttercups” is the A-side of their split with Playlounge, which sees both bands contributing a new track and, in turn, a cover of each other. The record will be released on 12” flower shaped vinyl (7” playable).

Nai Harvest are:

Ben Thompson – guitar and vocals
Lew Currie – drums

Pre-order the split from Dog Knights Productions here.

Topshelf Records will also have copies of the split available in the US.

Previous press for Nai Harvest

“The intoxicated tantrums of their striking debut ‘Whatever’ have given way to a manageable, strangely enjoyable hangover on ‘Hold Open My Head’… clean guitars cycle in a dream state during the verse and hitch in off-kilter rhythms during the hook”  – Pitchfork

“… their crafty plays on rhythm and dexterously executed shredding are anything but average” – MTV Iggy

“… hook-laden… the track applies the band’s knack for ramshackle punk and emo sensibilities to riffs far meatier and muscular than anything they’ve produced before” – DIY

“… calms down the post-hardcore tendencies of Whatever and veers more towards emo’s indie rock side” – Brooklyn Vegan

“cult Sheffield punks” – NME

Following an explosive UK tour with Gnarwolves in December, the duo followed this with support slots for Real Friends, You Blew It! and Modern Baseball’s UK tour in May and after key festival appearances, including Tramlines and Beacons, they will be on the road again with Superheaven in September.

Olde Worlde: "The Blue Musk-Oxen" out on September 1

Album release: “The Blue Musk-Oxen” by Olde World
Release date: September 1 2014
Label: Groundhog Records
Listen: on Olde World website

Olde Worlde is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist, Sohhei Numata. Born in Machida, Tokyo, Olde Worlde releases his brand new album The Blue Musk-Oxen in the UK on September 1st. Recorded, produced and mixed by Brad Wood (The Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Lee, Sunny Day Real Estate, Tortoise) it features current single Stuck In Hibernation – which is picking up airplay across BBC 6 Music, including spins at Lauren Laverne. On The Blue Musk-Oxen, Numata plays guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, piano, keyboard and moog.

As a precocious teenager, fixated on all kinds of musical styles from a very early age, it wasn’t long before he made himself a regular on the city’s busking circuit, absorbing the styles and skills of the city’s broad range of live talent. With much of the local music being sung in Japanese though, Namata looked to learn English from as many sources as he could, learning in person from J-Punk bands he would see live, but eventually settling on American Forces Radio as the medium to best be exposed to his adopted tongue.

Getting to grips with many a 90s US Indie Rock and Power Pop band through his radio, the traits of these come to the fore on The Blue Musk-Oxen. From former single Your Bird’s delicate lilt and simple melody, through to Stuck In Hibernation’s more fractured guitars and buoyant pace, The Blue Musk-Oxen is made a bright, sun-kissed, collection thanks to Brad Wood’s production.

Tracklisting

  • Wishing You Well
  • Your Bird
  • Number City
  • Thinking About You
  • A Girl Across The Country
  • Lemon Cake
  • Beating
  • Stuck In Hibernation
  • Realize Poppies

Kishi Bashi UK and Europe tour dates announced

Tour date announcement: Kishi Bashi
More information on: official Kishi Bashi website

Since the profoundly successful release of 151a two years ago, Kishi Bashi has toured relentlessly, captivating audiences across the globe with his loop-based live show, and fostering a groundswell of devotees. Now, with a new album under his belt, he hits the road again with an arsenal of exciting performances to be unleashed on audiences across the UK and Europe.

151a was crafted over a four-year period while Kishi Bashi, the pseudonym for artist K. Ishibashi, was touring and recording with Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal (where he was a full-time member and co-producer). In late 2012, after the success of 151a, Kishi Bashi decided to focus solely on his own music and began composing the new material, which led to the songs that are featured on Lighght.

‘Lighght’ takes its title from the one-word poem by minimalist poet Aram Saroyan, and he record (which is pronounced “Light”, by the way) continues and expands the sound of his critically acclaimed debut, 151a, which earned Kishi Bashi the title of “Best New Artist” for 2012 by NPR.

Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation on Lighght. Bright and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements, gentle ballads, Philip Glass-inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments that flirt with ‘70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes). If this sounds jarringly kaleidoscopic, that’s because it is. But it works.

Tour dates

You’ll find current tour dates below. The most up to date information regarding dates will be on Kishi Bashi’s official site.

New single from The Gromble

Single release: ‘Don’t Stand a Chance’ by The Gromble
Release date: 28 July 2014
Listen / more information: on The Gromble’s Facebook page

‘Somewhere between the lines of rock, folk, and the 90s, there is the handcrafted creation known as The Gromble. Put on your sunglasses, roll down those windows, and let The Gromble help you create the memories that will last a lifetime.’ – Indie Shuffle

‘The five-piece have been honing the craft for some time, and it shows. ‘Slam’ is effortless. A dizzying meeting of vocal hooks and harmonies, where the sunny instrumentation drives the track forward through the approaching clouds to create something both endearingly frenetic and warmly delivered. Accept it all with open arms.’ – Gold Flake Paint

After the success of recent single “Slam” which picked up serious hype across Hype Machine, Indie Shuffle and radio stations across the states, LA quintet The Gromble prepare to release the follow up track “Don’t Stand A Chance”.

Demonstrating a true crescendo of clever instrumentation and vocal harmonies, the track climaxes with a thunderously uplifting spirit to rival even Sigur Ros’ Hoppipolla. A sly ploy considering the lyrical content matter..

Hailing from the warm shores of California, the five-piece have established the kind of rare synchronicity that has helped them carve out a charming blend of orchestral alt-folk and indie rock, honed live supporting such acts as The Lemonheads. With the classical intensity of early greats Pavement, Weezer and Neutral Milk Hotel and a taste for the heartland classics, they arrive somewhere between Grouplove, Miniature Tigers, and Vampire Weekend. They take their name from a character in Nickelodeon’s Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, a perfect indicator of their unashamed love for 90’s pop culture and for the sense of humour that runs beneath the surface of their songs.

This is music for when you’re coming of age, music to soundtrack the best years of your life. The Gromble provide something different for everyone in their refreshing refusal to settle for the status quo. As such, they’ve already been championed by such reputable names as VICE, Gold Flake Paint, KROQ, and Indie Shuffle.

Dr John's to release Louis Armstrong tribute disc

Album release: “Ske-Dat-De-Dat The Spirit of Satch” by Dr John
Release date: 1 September 2014
Label: Proper Records
Listen on: official Dr John website

New Orleans musical giant pays tribute to fellow Crescent City legend Louis Armstrong with star-studded, divinely-inspired new tribute disc. Special guests include Bonnie Raitt, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Shemekia Copeland, Terence Blanchard and Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and six-time GRAMMY®-winner Dr. John is New Orleans’ most prominent living musical icon. The embodiment of his hometown’s freewheeling creative spirit and multiple musical traditions, he’s built a visionary, idiosyncratic body of work that’s deeply rooted in the Crescent City’s myriad blues, R&B, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll traditions.

So it’s fitting that Dr. John’s new album on Proper Records, “Ske-Dat-De-Dat The Spirit of Satch”, pays heartfelt tribute to another larger-than-life New Orleans legend: the seminal trumpeter and vocalist Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, whose musical innovations created the template for 20th-century jazz, and whose playful attitude and life-embracing spirit made him a beloved figure whose worldwide appeal transcended music.

“He’s the most famous guy that ever came out of my neighbourhood,” notes Dr. John. “He became a legend all over, for his trumpet playin’ and everything else, and he was the United States’ ambassador to the world.”

Ske-Dat-De-Dat The Spirit of Satch honours Armstrong’s musical genius as well as his effervescent personality with 13 classic numbers drawn from various phases of Armstrong’s five-decade career, with Dr. John joined by a stellar supporting cast that manages to update the material while maintaining the music’s timeless emotional appeal.

The subtitle The Spirit of Satch is particularly appropriate given the album’s birth cycle, which Dr. John says was set into motion when the late Armstrong—whom he’d only met once during his lifetime, in the office of their mutual manager Joe Glaser—came to him in a dream.

“Louis’s spirit came to me and told me to do something, that’s how this whole thing started,” says Dr. John, who’s previously released tribute albums to musical giants Duke Ellington and Johnny Mercer. “Louis told me, ‘Take my music and do it your way.’  It was the most unexpected thing in the world to me, to have Louis’ spirit show up like that, but he gave me a concept of where to roll with it that was spiritually correct. That made me feel very open to try some different things, because I felt that his spirit had ok’ed this record.”

Prior to making the album, Dr. John honoured Satchmo on stage, presenting rapturously received tribute concerts, dubbed “Props to Pops,” at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music in March 2012 and at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2013.

Field Mouse: Hold Still Life

Album release: “Hold Still Life” by Field Mouse
Release date: 22 July 2014
Label: Topshelf Records
Listen: on official Field Mouse website

A make-your-own CD recording booth was privy to Rachel Browne’s first recording in 1999, a cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl”. It would be another many years before she enrolled at SUNY Purchase, where she majored in music composition and met Andrew Futral, a producer and musician. The two began collaborating musically and in 2010 Field Mouse was officially formed. Eventually they expanded into a four piece, with the addition of Saysha Heinzman on bass and Tim McCoy on drums.

A mix of dreamy reverb-tinged guitars and synthesizers, Field Mouse blends the hard edges of indie rock with the warmer stylings of dream pop and shoegaze. Their songs lure you in with saccharine melodies and soothing vocals, and turn on you without warning with biting lyrics and a thick layered wall of fuzz guitar. It’s a blend Browne and Futral have spent years working to perfect, and it shows in their live performances and recordings. The upcoming LP, co-produced by Futral and Browne, marks Field Mouse’s first full-length. The album was recorded at Seaside Lounge, Brooklyn & Let Em In, Brooklyn and mixed by Kyle Gilbride (Swearin’, Waxahatchee, Upset).

The band released their first 7” single in February 2012, You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom, on Small Plates Records. This was followed in October 2012 with another 7” release, How Do You Know, through Lefse. Field Mouse was eventually rounded out with the addition of Saysha Heinzman on bass and Tim McCoy on drums, and in Spring of 2013 the band embarked on a six-week tour supporting Laura Stevenson as she played across the U.S.

Upon their return from tour the band wasted no time arranging their album. Inspired by burgeoning adulthood, social overload and isolation, life in New York, and the realization that life is going by with a terrifying swiftness (plus a handful of breakup songs to boot), the band wrote and recorded their album in late 2013. It marks the first full-length album that’s been written and released as a full band.

Writing and performing as much as possible, Field Mouse shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and hopefully will be coming to your town. Just don’t expect any covers of “Just a Girl.”

You Blew It! to release Weezer covers EP

EP release: “You Blue It” by You Blew It!
Release date: July 15 2014
Label: Topshelf
More information / pre-orders: via Topshelf website

Orlando, FL’s You Blew It! have announced details for their upcoming Weezer covers EP called “You Blue It”. Topshelf Records will release the EP digitally on July 15, followed by a vinyl release on August 12.

The 5-song EP, consisting of You Blew It!’s take on 5 classic Weezer tracks, follows on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the beloved alternative rock band’s eponymous debut studio LP, commonly referred to as “The Blue Album”.

You Blew It! front man Tanner Jones says, “The Blue Album means a lot to us. Aside from them being one of the few bands we can unanimously agree on, they’re one of the most defining bands of our generation. I’m not sure that we would be a band without Weezer, so this was just the best way we could come up with to pay tribute to them. Plus holy shit it was fun. Oh and “You Blue It” was too good of a pun to pass up so whatever.”

“You Blue It” was engineered by Matt Wilbur and Matt Burns and produced by Wilbur, Burns, and You Blew It. It was recorded at Vanguard Room in Lakeland, FL and mastered by Dan Coutant at Sun Room Mastering.

Andrea Balency's "Walls" EP out on June 23

EP release: debut EP ‘Walls’, co-produced by Airhead
Release date: 23 June
Label: Bataille Music
Listen on: official Andrea Balency site

A 22-year-old part-Mexican, part-French digital native world citizen (now living in Paris, but previously in NY, Mexico DF, London and Buenos Aires), Andrea Balency was spotted in 2010 as one of the most promising and exciting musical presences in the Mexican art-rock scene and singled out by James Blake (R&S, Universal), Inc. (4AD), Au Revoir Simone (Moshi Moshi) and Mount Kimbie (Warp), among others, as a supporting act. In April 2013 she was chosen by The Cure to open the closing gig of their worldwide tour in the main Mexico DF stadium “Foro Sol” for 50,000 people.

She played SXSW and Sonar before settling in Paris to start working on a new EP, WALLS, an eclectic mix of elegant hooks and soul-tinged indie electronica to be released on the 23rd of June 2014.

Having recently collaborated with avant-garde US and UK-based producers like Nick Hook & Los Angeles electro wunderkind Salva, she secretly supplied lead vocals on James Blake’s collaborator Airhead’s critically acclaimed single “Autumn”. Following a standout collaboration with New York based rapper Kilo Kish and with former Young Turks act We Are Shining’s new track co-written by FKA Twigs due to be released, Andrea sheds her high-brow classical piano training, blue-eyed English soul and both French and South American folk inspirations to plunge into washes of expansive electronica and dreamy, suggestive vocal textures in her solo project.

“You’ve Never Been Alone”, the first single from the WALLS EP, was co-produced by Rob McAndrews aka Airhead, recently acclaimed by Pitchfork for his debut album “For Years” (R&S, 2013), and mixed by the stellar French sound engineer Stephane “Alf” Briat (Air, Phoenix, Sebastien Tellier, Francoise Hardy, etc.). The song gives an original, continental answer to the UK based “twisted R&B-sung-by-cutely-breathy females scene” (The Guardian) that has been much-trumpeted lately. With its interrupted, intricately detailed and effects-washed sound, “You’ve Never Been Alone” is an idiosyncratic yet fiercely melodic, groove-based pop hit. Throughout her EP, Andrea explores relationships, restlessness and dislocation, using a smorgasbord of sounds to dig down into the heart of her nomadic upbringing.

File Andrea’s ethereal deep soul dubstep sounds and her fairy-like unique voice next to AlunaGeorge, FKA Twigs, Little Dragon, The XX & SBTRKT and you will not regret it. Currently writing her first album, which will feature a collaboration with Mount Kimbie, Andrea Balency is a beautiful singer you don’t want to mess with. It’s time to let you go.

Reaction

“Here’s a new name for you, Andrea Baleeency, franco-mexican, You’ve Never Been Alone” – Gilles Peterson, BBC 6Music (Single Premiered on his 6Music Worldwide show, May, 2014)

“Exquisite new single. Suitable for majestic casual lovers and dance floor demons. It sounds a bit like a nouveau electronica version of CocoRosie, with that light voice staggering against broken beats. Stunned from first listen.” – Indie Shuffle

‘Sounds incredible.’ – Red Bull Music Academy

White Reaper to release EP

EP release: White Reaper (eponymously titled)
Release date: 24 June 2014
Label: Polyvinyl
More information and pre-orders: on Polyvinyl website

“You have the feral snarl of MC5, the itchy, rhythmic spasms of post-punk, golden-era tunefulness, and a clash of time-stamped production tricks—the curiously EQ’d drums sound like they’re being recorded through a tin-can phone connection while an eerie keyboard riff lends a touch of browned-out psychedelia.” - Pitchfork

From the increasingly fertile DIY scene of Louisville, KY, emerges White Reaper - an incandescent power trio who is ready and willing to blow out eardrums far and wide.

The band - formed by Tony Esposito (vocals/guitar) and twin brothers Nick (drums) and Sam Wilkerson (bass) - combine sparkling hooks and fluid, fluttering rhythms to create psychedelia-tinged garage punk that make heads bob without sacrificing an ounce of sonic bite.

Having cut their teeth playing a number of raucous local and regional shows that left everyone’s ears ringing and no pores devoid of sweat, the group is ready to unleash their eponymous debut EP - a six-song blitzkrieg that traces the band’s present and future. While dingy and jangly single “Conspirator” scratches the itch left behind by Jay Reatard, infectious stand outs “Cool” and “Funn” will undoubtedly make the ears of the Ty Segall/Oh Sees sect perk up.

Affectionately known as “Tony and the Twins,” White Reaper have six tracks in their pocket, a few future surprises up their sleeves, a thunderous live show, and they’re just getting started….

Track listing

Cool
Funn
Half Bad
She Wants To
Conspirator
Ohh (Yeah)

Seminal indie-rock act Braid return with new album

Album release: ‘No Coast’ by Braid
Release date: July 8 2014
Label: Topshelf Records
Pre-order: on Topshelf Records website

Topshelf Records and seminal ’90s indie-rock band Braid are pleased to announce the band’s first full-length studio album in 16 years, ‘No Coast’. Being released on Tuesday July 8, ‘No Coast’ was produced by Will Yip and contains 12 of the most technically and lyrically creative songs ever penned by the Champaign-Urbana, IL- based quartet. Featuring a rousing collection of textures, as well as the combined signature vocals provided by guitarists Bob Nanna and Chris Broach, No Coast presents itself as the fitting follow-up to the career defining, 1998 indie-rock classic Frame & Canvas.

Since its inception in 1993, Braid released a number of compilation songs, 7” material and full-length albums that are still regarded as indie-rock benchmarks. 1998 was the defining year for Braid. The band played almost 200 shows that year, toured Europe twice (first with The Get Up Kids then with Burning Airlines), and Polyvinyl Record Co. released Frame & Canvas, the quintessential Braid album, recorded and produced at DC’s Inner Ear studios with J. Robbins. The record was released in April 1998 and met with more success than neither Braid, nor Polyvinyl, had ever imagined.

By early 1999, Braid was ready for a break and, ultimately, ended up deciding to call it quits. The last five days of the band were captured by the Bifocal-directed Killing A Camera documentary. Nearly a year later, Damon, Todd and Bob emerged as Hey Mercedes with some additional friends while Chris went on to start The Firebird Band and Lucid Records.

In mid-2010 the members of Braid - Chris Broach (guitar/vocals), Bob Nanna (guitar/vocals), Todd Bell (bass), and Damon Atkinson (drums) - discussed the possibility of working on a new release as well as performing a number of reunion shows that eventually led to their Closer To Closed EP and their Frame & Canvas tour in 2012 where they performed the album front-to-back in addition to a number of fan favorites. This burst of activity was a welcome return for the band that’s also made fans excited for what was possibly next beyond the release and brief stint.

Now in 2014, Braid has returned with a fresh set of material on No Coast that is more of a rebirth of the band rather than a simple reunion. “I think we feel like we want this to be an introduction to Braid more than a follow-up to previous material,” Chris Broach said. “We wanted to capture the spirit and dynamic tension that comes from having two guys up front that have a lot to say and a rhythm section that helps shape the songs. We spent a lot of time looking to where we could give each instrument its own space on the record - everything has its place, and its very deliberate.”

“The drive has always been there to create new, exciting material that would speak to all of our fans, old and new,” Bob Nanna adds. “We’re excited with how the record turned out and look forward to Braid’s busy future.”

Girl Band announce summer tour

Tour announcement: Girl Band
Dates: 23 May - 22 June 2014
More information and updates: on official Facebook page

“Girl Band’s 2012 debut EP, France 98, could’ve passed for a product of Sub Pop circa 1988. The irascible (and all-dude) Irish foursome proved they were after something more than flannel hand-me-downs” - Pitchfork

“Rules in excelsis” - The Quietus

“Noise-pop genius” - Drowned In Sound

“This boyish quartet from Dublin deliver visceral, invigorating music with nods to Daft Punk and Nick Cave” – The Guardian

“Gnarly alternative to moon eyed psychadelia, chanelling the sick lurch of Nirvana and Mudhoney through Pissed Jeans’ cleverly gormless humour… Abrasive, unrestrained and exhilarating” – NME

“A simply thrilling, terrifically pulse-quickening noise. Feral yet accessible…an alert, succinct display of how to match urgently funky post-punk to no wave-style white noise” – Clash

“Girl Band blow minds when they take to the stage with their brand of amped-up post-punk. This is a special band.” – DIY

Still wet behind the ears and fresh from their uni exams, Girl Band will be spending their entire summer on the road this year. With dates across the breadth of the UK as well as a wealth of shows and festivals across Europe, including Primavera (on the Vice stage), the Irish foursome are quickly establishing themselves as live circuit stalwarts. And for good reason.

On stage they are a wall of noise. Disparate and desperate in equal measure. Their music is all sinew and wires, burgeoning excitement - in their heads as much for the dance floors as it is for punk dives. Their last London headline show attracted nearly 250 people to The Old Blue Last with one-in one-out before 8pm, while both of their shows at The Great Escape festival 2014 had crowds cramming in shoulder to shoulder to witness the feral noise.

They’ve had worldwide acclaim for their latest singles including 7” “Lawman” and the 25 second long Record Store Day sell out “The Cha Cha Cha”, not to mention their earlier releases including their longest player to date, the six track EP, France 98. Perhaps the most groundbreaking of all was their cover of Yorkshire techno artist, Blawan, and his “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage”, streamed exclusively via The Quietus.

They will be playing the following shows over the summer:

  • 23.05 – Life Festival, Mullingar (ie)
  • 28.05 - Ubu, Perpignan (fr)
  • 29.05 – Primavera, Barcelona (es)
  • 02.06 – Dog & Parrot, Newcastle
  • 03.06 – The Bell Jar, Sheffield
  • 04.06 – Bloc, Glasgow
  • 05.06 – Electric Circus, Edinburgh
  • 06.06 – Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds
  • 07.06 – The Prince Albert, Brighton
  • 09.06 – The Cookie Jar, Leicester
  • 10.06 – The Portland Arms, Cambridge
  • 11.06 – The Shacklewell Arms, London
  • 12.06 - L’Envers, Bordeaux (fr)
  • 13.06 - Charada, Madrid (es)
  • 14.06 - Whipporwill, Oviedo (es)
  • 15.06 - Ibu Hots, Vitoria-Gasteiz (es)

  • 22.06 - Ekko, Utrecht (nl)

Lukas Batteau: Dance (for the Dead)

Single release: ‘Dance (for the Dead)’ by Lukas Batteau
Release date: 23 June 2014
Label: RnR Live
Listen on: Lukas Batteau official site

Melancholy and melodic, unpolished and emphatic: some words to describe the music of the Dutch singer-songwriter Lukas Batteau. He will be launching his first single, ‘Dance (For The Dead)’ on June 23rd in the UK. A very promising upbeat prelude to the album ‘Wasteland’, scheduled for this year.

In this single many characteristics of Lukas Batteau’s music come together. The driving banjo and his distinctive voice cause goose bumps in both the higher and the lower registers. Somewhere towards the end of the song he slows down, to then intensify with a refined final sprint. B-Side ‘Waterside’ similarly enthrals with a dark thumping beat and an overriding fluidity of its namesake.

Lukas Batteau grew up in South Korea, The Netherlands, and America, finding some steadiness in his guitar and voice at fifteen. Inspired by nineties bands like Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and Radiohead, he took to songwriting. Melodic, melancholy songs, soulful without getting too heavy. In 2008 he released his successful first EP ‘All Dressed Up And Nowhere To Go’. In 2012, in collaboration with hometowners Jelte Heringa, Nicky Hustinx, and Merijn van de Wijdeven, a well received second untitled EP.

Since the release of his first EP, Lukas Batteau has performed on many stages, like Paradiso and Melkweg in Amsterdam, Ekko and Tivoli in his home town. He even briefly toured the US, playing at the famous New York club The Livingroom. He has opened for international artists like Tracy Bonham, Gomez and Megafaun.

The Motown 7s Box - Volume 2: music from classic artists on 7" singles

Box set release: The Motown 7s Box - Volume 2
Release date: 2 June, 2014
Label: Universal

Following on from the overwhelming success of Volume 1, USM is proud to present ‘The Motown 7s Box Volume 2’.

Once more we celebrate “The Sound Of Young America”. As with Volume 1, many of the tracks included here were never released at their time of recording, for a variety of reasons.  Some got pushed to one side as albums usually only contained 12 songs and a few more were usually cut at the session - sometimes other Motown artists were given the songs and other versions were released, or it was simply a matter of the tracks being “rejected” at the weekly A+R meeting held with Berry Gordy and his team of songwriters and producers. The result: a source of brilliant recordings to release on highly desirable 7s.

From Universal: “For Volume 2 a few changes to the box packaging have been made. We have adapted the label copy insert into a more substantial four page card leaflet.  Vinyl will also be manufactured at Optimal to give the authentic push out centre hole of the time.  Sleeves will be paper rather than gloss card.  The selection of tracks again represent highly sought after vinyl releases compiled by journalist and DJ Richard Searling.  Boxes will be limited edition and numbered.”

'Taste My Sword of Understanding': new album from Opium Warlords

Album release: Taste My Sword of Understanding by Opium Warlords
Release date: June 16 2014
Label: Svart Records

Taste My Sword Of Understanding is the third offering of OPIUM WARLORDS, the final project of Sami Albert Hynninen (REVEREND BIZARRE, THE PURITAN, SPIRITUS MORTIS, ARMANENSCHAFT, AZRAEL RISING, THE CANDLES BURNING BLUE, KLV, TÄHTIPORTTI, MARCH 15 and ORNE).

In comparison to the earlier albums Live At Colonia Dignidad (Cobra, 2009), and We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky (Svart, 2012), it takes a few steps towards more conventional and easy-to-listen-to levels, but still can’t be mistaken for the average force-fed background bubblegum hum you might hear on the radio.

Composed between 1994 and 2009, recorded in 2010, mixed in 2013 – ripened, literally, with blood, tears, sweat, and exotic neurochemical fluids – Taste My Sword Of Understanding is at the same time minimal and complicated, light and heavy; sometimes gentle and soothing, sometimes raw and cruel, but always real and naked, and this time you may find  – among all the repetition, weird noises, and floating on the drone and ultra-light chimes – even some essence of epic Heavy Metal on board.

Opium Warlords on this album were: Sami Albert Hynninen, with Erkki Virta (PROTECTED ILLUSION, L.A.M.F., THE PURITAN) and Laura Länsimäki (MARIA, ARMANENSCHAFT).

It was recorded and co-produced by Jouni Leppikangas and mastered by Joona Lukala, both of who also worked on We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky and MARCH 15 album Our Love Becomes A Funeral Pyre (Svart, 2014).

TRACK LIST: The Sadness Of Vultures / The Self-Made Man / The God In Ruins / The Solar Burial / The Land Beyond The Pole / Mount Meru / This Place Has Been Passed / Manisolas From Misandria / In Melancholy Moonless Acheron
