Hajk new album out 1 February 2019

yhi_03dA.jpeg

Album release: 'Drama' by Hajk
Release date: 1 February 2019
Label: Jansen Records
More info: Band website

'Drama' – of the interpersonal kind – that’s what Hajk have turned their focus to in 2018. The band burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album last year, garnering support around the world as well as making a name for themselves in their home country of Norway. Now, the highly anticipated follow-up 'Drama' has been announced for February 2019 – a record that both pulls at the heartstrings and urges you to dance away your sorrows. Lead single and first taste of what is to come arrives in the form of the bubblegum-flavoured new cut, 'Dancing Like This'. It's a lyrically melancholy and wide-eyed love song, with an addictive melody that looks to sugarcoat your tears.

Hajk’s 2017 debut received praise from the likes of Astrid S, Sigrid and Kimbra, as well as actress and model, Chloë Grace Moretz. International acclaim came in waves from Noisey, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, Drowned In Sound, V Magazine, The Independent, Indie Shuffle, and more, noting their idiosyncratic, yet supremely catchy pop tunes, while likening them to everything from Fleetwood Mac and Aztec Camera to Dirty Projectors and Little Dragon.

With their second album, 'Drama', a more self-assured band reveals themselves. Sharpened by more studio experience, they have once again produced the record themselves, taking extreme care over every second and minute detail of their work. Blending analogue and digital sounds, switching between programmed arrangements and live takes from the studio, drawing on three lead vocalists and an assortment of guest musicians, Hajk conjured up whatever was necessary to fulfill their creative vision.

The title 'Drama' relates to the drama of humanity and a somewhat naïve yearning for love in a world in which love can sometimes seem in scarce supply.

'Drama' is due for release on February 1st via Jansen Records. First single from it 'Dancing Like This', is out on September 28th, listen here.

Gunship new album out 5 October 2018

GUNSHIP_DAD_Animation_Still_4.jpg

Album release: ‘Dark All Day’ by Gunship
Release date: 5 October 2018
More info: Band website

Today, synthwave pioneers Gunship return with the announcement of a brand new 13-track album titled ‘Dark All Day’ and unveil an epic new anime/live-action video for the title track. The new record is now available for pre-order and will be released on 5th October 2018.

In true Gunship fashion, the band have dusted off the VHS - both video and track are a tribute to the cult 1987 film ‘The Lost Boys’ and feature one of the film's stars Mr. Timmy Cappello - the sexy sax man himself.  Timmy provides a blistering performance on the track and also appears in the video, which sees him reprise his original role from ‘The Lost Boys’ some 30 years later.

Tim Cappello: "Gunship's track 'Dark All Day' is one of the funkiest tracks I've ever played on. The groove is brooding and dark but there's so much passion & power to it, it moves so well, I couldn't stop dancing while I was playing on it. And going doubletime during the choruses, pure genius. The guest singer, Indiana, has so much personality, her voice is so perfect for this, I think she's AMAZING! It was so much fun to reprise my role in The Lost Boys, 30 years later, I kinda felt like a kid again, the hips are holding up :D."

The video and track also features UK singer/songwriter Indiana on vocals, best known for her chart topping song ‘Solo Dancing’ and album ‘No Romeo’.

Watch the video for 'Dark All Day' here

Conceptually, the new video sees Gunship return to The Lost Boys’ fictional town of ‘Santa Carla’ in order to play a show. Unfortunately the years have not been kind to Santa Carla and the town’s infamous vampire infestation has worsened considerably. It's all going to OK though - GUNSHIP have brought the world's most notorious vampire slayers along for the ride as their personal bodyguards…

The new video pays homage to numerous well known vampire slayer characters, including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Blade, Seth Gecko from ‘Dusk til Dawn’, and the Frog brothers from the original film. The video culminates in the ‘death’ of Gunship, and their undead resurrection.

The album artwork also suggests a progression. The new cover art shows the previous album’s sun-design now ominously eclipsed. This signifies the beginning of the ‘Dark All Day’ era, a musical expansion of the band’s sound which sees them exploring darker and more cinematic material in tandem with a renewed focus on the killer hooks and pop sensibility Gunship are known for. Countless horror classics were unleashed on the world during the 1980s; this is Gunship’s love letter to that incredibly creative and artistically rich period.

The video is created in Japanese anime style by ‘Angry Metal Studios’ but, significantly, it switches to live action for the finale - this is the first time that Gunship have revealed themselves, having never appeared in any of their previous videos.

Gunship are well-known for their impressive collaborations with previous material featuring the likes of John Carpenter (director/composer), Lee Hardcastle (The ABC’s of Death, [Adult Swim], 20th Century Fox), Charlie Simpson, Lou Hayter (New Young Pony Club), Martin Grech, Stella Le Page, Miami Nights 1984, Make Up And Vanity Set, Carpenter Brut and more.

The new album 'Dark All Day' sees the band expand on this by collaborating with the likes of tattoo artist, model, musician, author, entrepreneur, and television personality Kat Von D, who provides a seething and haunting vocal collaboration on track 'Black Blood Red Kiss'. Elsewhere on the album, 'When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies' features an innovative segment in which fans submitted recordings of themselves giving uplifting statements, led by self-proclaimed ‘King of the Nerds’ Wil Wheaton (The Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, Stand By Me…).

Similarly, the band channel their love for all things cyberpunk on the track ‘Woken Furies’ which is a tribute to and features voice-over from renowned science fiction author Richard K. Morgan (Altered Carbon). In addition, 'Art3mis & Parzival’ is written in tribute to the book 'Ready Player One', which was recently brought to the screen by Steven Spielberg. The genuine 8-bit pixel art video for ‘Art3mis & Parzival’ was released in April, garnering effusive praise from no less than the author of ‘Ready Player One’ himself Ernest Cline, who described it as “Badass”.

Popular UK artist Una Healy (The Saturdays) also contributes vocals on the album.

'Dark All Day' is availble for pre-order now. The album contains 13 tracks and is available in a deluxe limited edition 180g double-gatefold 45 rpm vinyl set with special lenticular cover, as well as in a brand new Special Edition ‘16-Bit Box Set’ which includes signed CD and a plethora of new GUNSHIP goodies.

Upon pre-ordering the album listeners will receive two instant downloads ‘Dark All Day’, and ‘Art3mis & Parzival’.

GUNSHIP is Dan Haigh, Alex Westaway and Alex Gingell. Gunship’s sound is created with vintage analogue synthesizers and other retro electronic gear from the 1980s. Driven and inspired by nostalgia for a bygone era, Gunship harness this retro approach to birth something fresh and new. Their sound is sonically diverse - blending sweeping fluorescent synth lines with fever pitched and adrenalizing electric bass arpeggios.

Dan Haigh from Gunship describes their sound as “a neon soaked, late night, sonic getaway drive, dripping with luscious analogue synthesizers, cinematic vocals and cyberpunk values, exploding from the front cover of a dusty plastic VHS case which has lain forgotten since 1984.”

Previous praise for Gunship

“… the perfect coalescence of everything I and the rest of our editorial team love: retrofuturism, ’80s references, synthy jams, and way more.” – Nerdist

“…a gleaming synth behemoth that wouldn’t sound out of place soundtracking a medley of all your favourite Eighties sci-fi films.” –  Evening Standard

“Gunship Release One Of The Coolest Music Videos Ever” –  Bloody Disgusting

“British band GUNSHIP have made the most innovative, awesome music video ever” – Zoo Magazine

webFHFOTO1.jpg

Single release: 'Fallen' by First Hate
Release date: Out now
More info: Band Soundcloud

Rising from the snake pit into the international spotlight; the journey continues for First Hate. It all began with the self-titled debut EP ‘First Hate’ (Bad Actors Inc., September 2014), which featured hit singles 'Girls In The Club' and 'In My Dreams', music that transcended genres transforming the Copenhagen underground scene. It was a steady climb for the two Copenhageners, who have spent time on the road with Trentemøller, Communions, Iceage and Lust For Youth. Summer 2015 was spent in the studio producing their follow-up EP ‘The Mind Of A Gemini’ (Escho, March 2016). Sold out headline shows at Lille Vega, Copenhagen and The Waiting Room, London proved the band's popularity was now hitting a wider more mainstream audience with singles 'White Heron' and 'Trojan Horse' getting heavy rotation on national radio.

The rest of the year was spent on the road touring mostly throughout Europe with additional tours in China and North America. A key festival highlight was the triumphant headlining set on the Countdown Stage at Roskilde Festival. Spring 2017 saw the release of their highly anticipated debut album ‘A Prayer For The Unemployed’, which was released May 12th 2017 via Escho. It was  produced by First Hate with guidance by Troels Damgaard Holm and Malthe Fischer.

Now, the duo share the visuals for their latest single 'Fallen', which you can watch HERE

Dark Dark Horse new single out now

DarkDarkHorse-PressShot2018.jpg

Single release: 'And Then We Had Nothing At All' by Dark Dark Horse
Release date: 26 January 2018
Label: Little Fanfare
More info: Band website

Dark Dark Horse premiere new single at Magnetic Magazine

"The song features Stafford’s soaring vocals over a track that slowly builds into a large crescendo. The drums slowly build alongside synths, piano, strings and eventually electric guitar in an epic finale." – Magnetic Magazine

Dark Dark Horse is a Leicester duo comprising of Jamie Ward (producer/multi-instrumentalist) and James Stafford (singer) who collectively create expertly crafted glacial pop-electronica steeped in indie rock sensibilities.

After a break from activity whilst Ward toured full time with globetrotting ‘astonishing’ instrumentalists Maybeshewill, 2017 marked the rebirth of the band. Having released EP, 'Luna II' in April and recently signing a publishing deal with Warner’s W Songs, Dark Dark Horse are ready to return with the elegant and emotive new single ‘And Then We Had Nothing At All’ on January 26th via Little Fanfare.

Listen now via Soundcloud
Listen now via Spotify

“'And Then We Had Nothing At All' is perhaps the most epic and ambitious song we've recorded so far. At over seven minutes long it defies the typical conventions of a single but it's power, beauty and grandeur was something we felt needed its own space.” explains Ward. It's a sound that feels totally organic and blissfully simplistic, yet stylishly layered and polished, simultaneously. “A kaleidoscope of swirling reverse synths, dusty samples from my mother’s children's music classes, pounding drums and sweeping violin… we really threw the kitchen sink at this one.”

Lyrically, Stafford touches on a seemingly darkening impression of the future - in which the struggle between over analysing the present or consciously turning a blind eye to the problems we face, can create a stunned ambivalence towards each. It's a delicate and emotional issue that people have struggled with universally - and one that Dark Dark Horse explore powerfully.

Live: Sebright Arms, London - 8th of February – Supporting HOLY

Bob Holroyd new album due 9 March 2018

Bob Holroyd.jpg

Album release: 'The Cage' by Bob Holroyd
Release date: 9 March 2018
More info: Artist website

The new single 'Inner Mind Sigh' premieres with Clash.

Ranging from ambient minimalism to world music, modern classical to jazz, Bob Holroyd’s music is often hard to pigeon hole. With eight studio albums and six remix albums to his name, Bob’s eclectic and texturally cinematic work has been recognised and remixed extensively by a huge range of artists such as Coldcut, Nitin Sawhney, Four Tet, Francois K, Mogwai, The Album Leaf, T. Williams, Lemonde, Loop Guru, Steve Roach and more, and has been used prominently in mainstream TV and films such as The Dark Knight, Lost, True Blood, The Sopranos, Panorama, Coast and many more. Now Bob is set to release his ninth album ‘The Cage’.

Over the course of his musical career Bob Holroyd has pioneered music that crosses musical and cultural boundaries, and as a result his music is influenced by a diverse array of sights, sounds from around the world. Bob's music includes influences from extensive travels in Africa and Asia, and ranges from intense walls of percussive drumming - as on his cult club classic 'African Drug' - to delicate atmospheric soundscapes, such as the beautiful 'Looking Back' - a track recorded for the 'Sanscapes' project to highlight the plight of the Kalahari Bushmen, with whom he collaborated with. Similarly, he also recorded the Islamic Call to Prayer at Regent's Park Mosque, writing a moving and dramatic piece around the haunting vocal by Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens).

With more recent releases such as the critically acclaimed ‘Blueprint’ and ‘Beachcombing’ Bob looks to himself for inspiration. Citing work in therapy and exploring the complex textures and emotions that make up every moment of our lives as well as exploring the creative process itself as key elements of stimulus. The new album ‘The Cage’ delves further into Bob’s poignant introspection.

“‘The Cage’ is where I have subconsciously imprisoned myself emotionally for years” says Bob, “By keeping out ‘negative’ emotions I have felt safe, but ultimately made myself unapproachable to others, and myself. I had the idea that instead of trying to escape this Cage I should enlarge it to include all emotions, feelings experiences and people - if EVERYTHING is in the Cage then I am more free than if I were keeping all influences out.”

Bob has reflected on this when constructing and recording the album, instead of going into the studio with a set of well-rehearsed and fine-tuned ideas, he has opted for a more organic approach, recording on what felt right on that day. Speaking about the process Bob says, “it has taken a long time to finish some tracks, and there are various other pieces at varying stages of completion, but I have found it incredibly liberating to do only what immediately ‘feels’ right without the constraints that I have put myself under in the past.”

This raw and beguilingly honest take on his new album can be heard instantly in the music itself. There are transcendent ambient cogitations throughout ‘The Cage’, which is made up of twelve tracks of deep emotive encounters, from ruminating to wistful to uplifting and even a little perturbing at times. There are beautifully woven atmospheric textures of light and space, which coalesce to form something, which can only truly be described as minimally complex. Fans of Eno, Laraaji, Max Richter and Peter Broderick will find much to love (Bob also names the likes of David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, Arvo Part, Nils Petter Molvaer, Radiohead, Tavener and more as further influences).

As Bob Holroyd delves further into his own psyche, as well as the world and influences around him, his own brand of quiet sound collages grow not only in their multi-faceted compositions but also in their intelligent and thought-provoking non-verbal prose. Despite any potential preconceptions, Bob creates incredibly personal records, which are free from self-indulgence and pretension, ‘The Cage’ is not too complicated to absorb, it’s not boring or forgettable, but for many, not to mention for Bob himself, it will ultimately be very rewarding.

Press reaction to date

"a beautiful example of the sheer artistry that drives Bob Holroyd's work."
– Clash

“At his best Holroyd is Massive Attack, Mogwai, Simon Fisher Turner, David Toop and Future Sounds of London in an intelligent globally-tinged reflective collaboration. Electronics flutter and strings caress our emotions without it descending into self-indulgent sentimentalism” – DJ Mag

“stunning” – Resident Advisor

“Massive Attack style broody stalking sexiness” – Mixmag

“quite simply the gentlest, most emotionally potent, enveloping piece of electro-acoustic ambient music I’ve heard in a very long time” – Hypnagogue

DATAROCK new album out 9 March 2018

datarock.jpg

Album release: 'Face the Brutality' by DATAROCK
Release date: 9 March 2018
Label: YAP Records
More info: Band website

The return of DATAROCK is finally upon us: the Norwegian act have announced their long-awaited third album Face the Brutality with a few teases: fans can get a glimpse of the new DATAROCK here and here, and stream the first single here. 'Ruffle Shuffle' is a memorable return for the synth act - hooky, stylishly constructed and impeccably produced. Listen to 'Ruffle Shuffle' + Watch the Trailer.

DATAROCK’s infectious brand of indie-dance has seen considerable international attention, including placements with Apple and Google - take one listen to the opening bassline of 'Fa Fa Fa' and you’ll instantly recognise it.

'Face the Brutality' will be the band's first LP since 2009 and first output since their musical (featuring 87 live musicians, as you do), 'The Musical', in 2015. Years in the making, 'Face the Brutality' is an album for the bored and bitter survivors of 2017, an upbeat escape with substance. Pre-order here.

Confusion lies right at the heart of Bergen, Norway’s beloved DATAROCK. Just ask founder Fredrik Saroea to summarize the band’s history and it’ll make your head spin. On their 2009 album Red, for instance, they listed almost fifty members, and their musical, released, with unusual transparency, under the name The Musical in 2015, featured 87 guests. With so many members coming and going, Saroea jokes that the main member of the band has always been the red tracksuit, worn by musicians during DATAROCK’s live performances, for which they’ve become famous. Adding to the confusion, however, even that has now been replaced by a black one.

DATAROCK’s latest album is called 'Face the Brutality' - try not to read anything too deep into that. “We heard a radio show in Canada with that name back in 2004,” Saroea confides, “and thought it sounded hilariously pretentious. Coming from a city of black metal, and with a background in punk and thrash metal, we found the title so utterly wrong for DATAROCK that we’ve always wanted to use it for an album.”

Bewildering as this all may seem, it does nothing to undermine the sincerity of what DATAROCK do. This, perhaps, is hard to credit, given the band's history of red tracksuits and occasionally playful lyricism. There are, too, what one can only describe as Easter Eggs scattered throughout the album: see if you can find the homage to The Faces, or to cult 1985 film The Goonies. But while these may appear light-hearted, they’re also indicative of the genuine artistry central to DATAROCK’s playful aesthetic, one that’s drawn upon Talking Heads and Happy Mondays, The Fall and The Stone Roses, Television and Laurie Anderson, and even Kyle Dixon’s and Michael Stein’s Stranger Things score. As Saroea so eloquently puts it, “Referencing isn’t just something I do for fun, but out of respect for the proud tradition of quality music, a tradition one ought to know pretty well if one aspires to be part of it. As a friend of mine said when we were kids, ‘You know, music isn’t a private, personal matter - it’s a relation-driven individual mastering of tradition and technique.’”

Face the Brutality is full of tradition and technique: the woozy pop of 'Ruffle Shuffle', the laid-back groove of 'Sense of Reason', the wired funk of 'Everything', even going back to Plato and the Greek myth of Icarus on 'Feathers and Wax', proving that Saroea took his education seriously.

Subversive and mischievous, disarmingly modest, effortlessly entertaining, and as daft as they are heartfelt, DATAROCK have been sorely missing from our lives these unsettling recent years. Their ambitions remain humble - “We hope the next album will reach out and put a smile on our fellow bitter and bored friends around the world” - but 'Face the Brutality' might even entertain a handful or two others.

Wild Ones debut album due 6 October 2017

wild-ones.jpg

Album release: 'Mirror Touch' by Wild Ones
Release date: 6 October 2017
Label: Topshelf Records
More info: Band website

Wild Ones (Portland, OR) are sharing another single in advance of the release of their sophomore album, 'Mirror Touch', out October 6th on Topshelf Records. 'Invite Me In' is a sensuous pop cut, which The Line Of Best Fit called "crisp, clean, and understated, with a funky bassline."

Vocalist Danielle Sullivan says," 'Invite Me In' is my favorite song on our record. It's the first track that Thomas sent me that gave me a clear feeling of what 'Mirror Touch' could become. It's about living a guarded life, about constructing a false image of oneself, and how it feels to let someone in despite it all." Listen to 'Invite Me In'.

Nylon premiered the first single 'Paresthesia' calling it "a catchy indie gem with a deeper meaning." GoldFlakePaint premiered 'Standing in the Back at Your Show' calling it "a sumptuous undertaking, one that bleeds an acutely subtle prickliness through the elegant shell of the composition which does its best to hide the such sentiments from view."

Wild Ones delve into the bliss and burden that musicians are tasked with today: create work that captures your spirit, but do it without selling your soul. Self-produced and recorded, they walk the line of DIY oddity and polished pop sheen. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, the band combines the talents of lead vocalist Danielle Sullivan, keyboardist Thomas Himes, drummer Seve Sheldon, guitarist Nick Vicario and bassist Max Stein. Growing up on Cocteau Twins and En Vogue, their sound is a mash of R&B synths, muted guitar, and somber vocal melodies. After 7 years together, they've hit their stride in creating work that poses questions about art and authenticity.

'Mirror Touch', the band’s latest record releasing in October 2017 via Topshelf Records, explores spaces of isolation, loneliness and how it feels when the line between self and other becomes blurred. The record title refers to the condition "Mirror Touch Synesthesia" and the physiological experience of empathy. How can you know yourself, when in public you become everyone else? The songs explore the quest to maintain artistic self-integrity in an industry that seeks to homogenize. Solitary in their process of collaboration, Himes and Vicario produce the music, while Sullivan crafts lyrics and melodies, their attempt at self-preservation against the ever-changing expectations of what music should or should not be. Combining their style of upbeat melodies with a backdrop of darker lyrical themes, an inquiry into their artistic process ultimately reflects a balance between earnest head nods to their favourite sounds with a fierce loyalty to their own sense of self.

Andrew Weatherall new album due 29 September 2017

Album release: 'Qualia' by Andrew Weatherall
Release date: 29 September 2017
Label: Hoga Nord Rekords
More info: Hoga Nord website

The aural collusions of Weatherall, Walsh and an old accomplice and sparring partner in Legrand (11/11/65 - 22/11/11), 'Qualia' is a quandary, a question mark and maybe, just maybe, his finest release in years. It's also a record best defined in the words of Mr Weatherall himself:

"Mr Brackstone, my psychic shepherd, when confronted by the facts would probably say it was cosmic synchronicity but then again he would because he's Jung at heart. Others may cite mere coincidence. These are the facts. I'll leave the metaphysical debate for another time...

It's all about the black notebooks as memorial device and 'The Black Notebook' and 'This Is Memorial Device'. At the same time as reading Mr Modiano and Mr Keenan I was ensconced in the Woodleigh Research Facility investigating a method of composition sparked by a random event too prosaic for the telling; unless of course we go back to 'The Red Book' and see the hand of Jah [the D.M.T molecule that steers human existence] at work. After all it was him/her/non-binary that sent me the "shave your beard off" message. And the "don't buy any more drugs" one.

Whatever your leanings the music on 'Qualia' is the result of images, feelings
and thought processes stirred up by Monsieur Modiano and Mister Keenan channeled through the medium of a sonic noteboook - in itself the memoir of somebody else's life/fiction.

My own black notebooks, like Jean's [Modiano's protagonist] stir the silt of
memory and birth as many mysteries as memories. They also provided the track titles."

Andrew Weatherall. The Woodleigh Research Facility, July 2017.

Third Culture Kings debut album due 19 August 2017

Album release: ‘Is That Light You Carry?’ by Third Culture Kings
Release date: 19 August 2017
Label: Weed Recordings
More info: Band Facebook

‘Is That Light You Carry?’ is the debut record from Third Culture Kings, a new project led by Jan Johansen (Glorybox) and Alap Momin (dälek). Filtering classic vibes through modern interpretation, 3CK reimagine The Velvet Underground or Leonard Cohen as if they had been mixed by King Tubby and Afrika Bambaataa, all the while incorporating influences as diverse as Indian drone, early 80’s synth pads and Miami booty bass.

Still, it’s worth noting that there’s nothing about these recordings that’s rooted in the past: nearly every sound on the record - sans lead vocals and guitar – was created or recorded directly to an iPhone. Momin created the beats, bass and majority of synth lines on his device, while Johansen then recorded backing vocals, second guitar, vibraphone, piano, horns, rhodes, and melodica as voice memos on his that were eventually dropped on top of the finished tracks.

Cuts like ‘Seven Slayers’ send you on an arcane descent into alien subterranea, while ‘Sunshine For Sadie’ floats you across a dreamy, space-like universe. Elsewhere in tracks like ‘Flamingo’ and ‘Higher’, rock and roll guitars are juxtaposed with rattlesnake drums, creating ambient desert soundscapes perfect for an imagined intergalactic western. Throughout the record, hypnotic layers of sound and ambient psychedelics grip you to an electric-folk universe in which slow bubbling beats are matched with woozy flourishes and gently propellant melodies.

There are few acts claiming to channel Vangelis and Suicide at the same time, and even fewer that also shout out their love of Doo Wop, UK Bass, and Chicago House in the same breath, but this international duo manage to strike all those notes and more. Veteran performers who’ve outlasted endless trends and toured the world for the better part of the last two Third Culture Kings aren’t afraid to stretch the boundaries of style. The eclectic, yet cohesive group of songs in their live shows complement bills featuring everything from shoegaze to commercial R&B.

Jan Johansen hails from Copenhagen and has toured all over Europe, the U.S., and Japan with his old band Glorybox sharing stages with acts including Iggy and The Stooges and Marilyn Manson. He's recorded and toured playing guitar, drums, sitar, percussion, keys, and vocals with Serena Maneesh, Neil Halstead (Slowdive/Mojave3), Sufjan Stevens, and many many more. He also currently performs in the Danish indie rock band Ring Them Bells.

Alap Momin, from New York City, better known as the Oktopus was a founding member and producer of the ground-breaking noise/hip-hop group dälek. Over the course of 15 years they released seven full-lengths worldwide while working with labels including Ipecac Recordings, Matador Records, Southern Records, and Tigerbeat 6. They performed alongside an incredible batch of artists, amongst them De La Soul, KRS-One, Tool, Fantomas, Isis, John Zorn, Mike Patton, The Melvins, Moby, Prince Paul, The Roots, Massive Attack, Kraftwerk, Amon Tobin, Sonic Youth, Mars Volta, Saul Williams, and Flying Lotus. Alap has also been a recording and mix engineer for the past 24 years working on music from The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Rye Coalition, Charles Hayward (This Heat), Faust, Will Oldham, David Byrne, Yann Tiersen, Alan Vega, Ted Leo, Eric Bachmann, and many more.

Emelie Hollow single 'Like I Love You' out now

Single release: ‘Like I Love You’ by Emelie Hollow
Release date: Out now
Label: Universal
More info: Artist Facebook

Hailing from Norway, Emelie Hollow is already displaying a sharp musicality and songwriting talent that transcends her 18 years. She has written music with several Scandinavian producers and songwriters already, including Dhani Lennevald (Lykke Li) and Carl Falk (Demi Lovato, Nicki Minaj, One Direction, Ariana Grande) and her brand-new track, the smart pop and R&B flavour of 'Like I Love You' premiered on The Line Of Best Fit last week.

Emelie Hollow was born in Norway to a Norwegian mother and a father from New Zealand. From an early age, she was making and listening to music; learning to play piano, guitar and cello, all the while growing into a great vocalist and in turn, a capriciously talented songwriter. She credits an eclectic range of musicians as having an influence on her sound, from NAO to Carole King to The Weekend.

On the track itself she says:

“For me, 'Like I Love You' is the beginning of a new chapter in my life, where I can explore and work with my music on other new levels. While I wrote the song in Stockholm, I lost my phone in a glass of water but I didn’t have time to be concerned about it because I was digging it too much – the phone survived! Even though it´s scary to release something completely different from what people have heard from me before, I’m really looking forward to presenting 'Like I Love You'. I hope people like it.”

'Like I Love You' is written by Emelie Hollow and written/produced by Dhani Lennevald (Lykke Li) and Carl Falk (Demi Lovato, One Direction, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande).

Vandana EP ‘Nox Anima’ out 21 April 2017

EP release: ‘Nox Anima’ by Vandana
Release date: 21 April 2017
More info: Artist website

Fusing elements of disquieting electronica with alternative pop, Vandana’s angular, intense music embraces womanhood and otherness as if from inside the mouth of a cave. Her multicultural lifestyle, from India to London to Brooklyn, has influenced her wildly eclectic and self-assured material, which arrives steeped in the knowledge of ancient Indian traditions and fables as well as in assorted vehicles of abstract art and thought.

Inspired by musical pioneers like Aphex Twin, Thom Yorke and Miles Davis as well as the vibrancy of Bollywood, the Gothicism of The Cure and the evocativeness of Fever Ray, Vandana also takes her cues from purveyors of subversion like Edgar Allan Poe, Lars Von Trier and Henry Miller. In this latest material, the naturally introverted singer brings her insular and mysterious writing process to life via slow-dripping, throbbing synths, creating an atmosphere that’s arcane, exotic and brooding.

An instinctive and intimate record - and one that was created in Vandana’s home studio during a period of solitary retreat - the six-track EP makes for a truly absorbing listen.

Using a journal in which she writes and draws entirely with her left hand (in esoteric thought, the left hand is associated with receiving), many of her lyrics are the result of this inward-looking process and are thus super cathartic and revealing. It's a maze of sentiments with the emphasis being on a nocturnal space and - as a result - the release is named 'Nox Anima' - meaning Night Soul/Spirit. This in turn, is a nod to the psychologist Carl Jung's description of Anima: the part of the psyche that is directed inward and in touch with the subconscious.

Lead single ‘Vicious’ was inspired by watching a lot of nature documentaries. This song is literally dedicated to the majesty of a creature in pursuit and what it’s like having an unobtainable subject of affection –a fixation over something without being able to physically or tangibly possess it. Elsewhere, ‘Nearly’ documents the seasonal cycles of a relationship, while ‘Jaan’ is a trying but exciting journey through a dense, deep, smoky forest with a loved one- about reconnecting with the primitive animal side.

The whole EP twists about on a mixture of abstract and visceral themes, building you up before submerging you in swirls of throbbing sound that threaten to unsettle your very core.

Bl࣪änk ‘Weary Soul’ new album due 20 March 2017

Album release: ‘Weary Soul’ by Bl࣪änk
Release date: 20 March 2017
Label: Grind Records

Split between Atlanta and the remote northern parts of Sweden - commonly known as Sápmi, the hip-hop meets electro-pop trio Blänk are currently getting ready to release their third album ‘Weary Soul’. Touching on topics such as self-destruction, angst, hope, and finally acceptance, the new record is as much uplifting as it is lachrymose, focusing on emotional emancipation and taking control of your own life.

With their last two albums ‘You’ve never been to Sápmi’ (2009) and ‘Only Built For Northern Lights’ (2015) earning the trio acclaim from across the US and UK, Blänk have gone from strength-to-strength with each release. It is obvious that their evolution across their work, influenced by friends from across the music scene (they collaborated with Noonie Bao on their last record), has transmuted their sound towards their most mature and consummate release yet. This record now sees the trio go it alone bearing brutal yet charming honesty and an empowering confidence.

‘Weary Soul’ is powerful step forward for Blänk, whilst still combining the trio’s signature combination of polar melancholy and the slick yet gritty flow of the nominally southern state of Atlanta. The album is still heavily rooted in hip-hop, however the new record also sees Blänk move into a darker more downbeat atmospheric electro sound, which occasionally takes influence from intermittent soul-infused textures and at times owes itself to a subtle 80’s electro-pop inflection. It’s an incredibly diverse record, which is carried by the contrasting vocals from Simon Trabelsi and Lina Öhman and their lyrical themes - the album surrounds their motivation to turn thoughts of depression and suicide towards thoughts of growth, self-love and self-discovery.

It’s dark, but still hopeful, whilst also exhibiting hubris. ‘Weary Soul’ is the culmination of years of personal challenges and self-work. Valleys, peaks, wins, losses, they're all a part of the journey but their collective weight adds up. Speaking about the album Blänk said, “The album is about baring the pain and perspectives of the weary soul that's lived through it all. At this point it's not about being depressed or celebrating wins, it's about recognising all those things are a part of a larger journey that shapes the person one becomes.”

Losers new album due 9 Sept 2016

Album release: ‘How To Ruin Other People’ s Futures’ by Losers
Release date: 9 September 2016
Label: 61 Seconds Records
More info: Band website

Made up of Tom Bellamy (ex-Cooper Temple Clause), Paul Mullen (ex-YourCodeNameIs:Milo/Young Legionnaire, Eddy TM (DJ/new music radio and club guru) and Dean Pearson (Vennart, British Theatre) and with years of history across a huge range musical landscapes, Losers are the rarest of species, a band with no safety net and no conformist formula to follow. Their previous material has crossed over a huge range of styles and genres with their earlier dance driven material developing all the way into the more rock driven and poignant emotive output of their previous album. Now, Losers are back with another more developed new outlook, as a new band, and more importantly, with their new album ‘How To Ruin Other People’s Futures’.

Loser’s previous album ‘…and so we shall never part’ was received with critical acclaim across a huge range of publications spanning from electronic all the way through to the rock press. The album also saw multiple tracks synced to the likes of the London 2012 Olympics, Game Of Thrones, CSI, Michael Bay’s Black Sails, Xbox title Far Cry 3 and more. Achieving acclaim across the industry ‘…and so we shall never part’ has also earned plaudits from the likes of Zane Low and Rob Da Bank alongside Gary Numan and the legendary Sisters Of Mercy, who both handpicked the band to tour with them in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

For long-time Losers fans ‘How To Ruin Other People’s Futures’ will be seen as a rapid evolution to the bands top form. The new album is a free falling head first descent into the bands new dark, brooding and emotionally brutal sound. Crushing electronics reminiscent of HEALTH collide with instrumental and vocal dynamics and intensity that call to mind the sounds of early-Nine Inch Nails, whilst the lyrics are far more visceral and caustic than before. On tracks such as ‘Chainsaw’ and ‘This Is A War’ Losers exhibit their newly found raw power and abrasive edge, at times calling to mind the electronic punk edge of early-Prodigy albums. The lyrics are contemplative and full of ferocity, however they also induce feelings of transfiguring uplift. ‘How To Ruin Other People’s Futures’ is the culmination of what Losers have been working towards over the past four years, harking back to the more guitar driven, melodic work of their second album, and even the more dance driven sound of their earlier incarnation, whilst eagerly succumbing to their darker and heavier sensibilities.

Speaking about the new album, Tom Bellamy, said: “We had no rules when we began this record. Only to build on the epic noise we had been making in London but this time round having the isolation and alienation of a residential studio in the middle of a Brandenburg forest. The sound that came out is the documentation of a harrowing journey where two band members ended up joining a third in therapy.”

There are countless wonders to unearth and embrace in ‘How To Ruin Other People’s Futures’, the album leads the band on journey into a more expansive, inventive, and adventurous territory than ever before. Losers have proven yet again that they are not willing to be pigeon-holed, and albums that manage to merge such a wide variety of styles and exhibit such a multitude of musical landscapes are rare. Losers have now morphed into a more muscular beast, flexing a heavier, gilt-edged sound than their previous manifestations, producing a romantically damaged but melodically immaculate third album.

KHOMPA album due 2 Sept 2016

Album release: ‘The Shape Of Drums To Come’ by KHOMPA
Release date: 2 September 2016
Label: Monotreme Records
More info: Artist website

In addition to touring Europe numerous times with his instrumental power trio STEARICA, sharing the stage with bands such as Girls Against Boys, Acid Mothers Temple, NoMeansNo, Dälek, Damo Suzuki and Coliseum, as well as working as a session player with several Italian acts, Davide Compagnoni has been hard at work developing his electrifying new solo project KHOMPA: an adventurous mix of drumming, electronics and cutting edge drum triggering technology.

KHOMPA is a unique audiovisual live act whose main elements are: a drummer, a conventional drum kit, 4 drum triggers, a laptop and a stepsequencer. Each drum controls a virtual musical instrument (synthesizers, samplers, etc.) within Ableton Live music software that, in combination with a custom stepsequencer (developed with MaxforLive app), allows Davide to perform real melodies/electronic orchestration without the use of any backing track, loops or click track. 100% live. KHOMPA's live show will also be enhanced by an innovative custom lightning set that will be controlled by the same triggers used for the music.

Musically, ‘The Shape Of Drums To Come’ is a multifarious amalgamation of styles and genres. Whilst it is predominantly an electronic record, in keeping with the title (a tribute to the seminal ‘The Shape Of Punk To Come’ by Refused), the album is laced with a brilliantly challenging punk attitude whilst flirting with the avant-garde, using experimental rhythms and atmospherics. It’s no surprise that the album is due to be released via Monotreme Records (home to the likes of This Will Destroy You, 65daysofstatic and sleepmakeswaves).

Tracks such as opener, ‘Nettle Empire’, combine complex rhythms with mellifluous and harmonious synth based melodies. It’s a clear display of technical prowess, without losing its intricate and well-formed composition and song structuring. Other tracks such as ‘The Shape’ and ‘Louder’ lean more towards the heavier side of the spectrum, sonically sitting somewhere in between the harsh electronic noise of early-HEALTH and Fuck Buttons and Davide’s previous experimental/avant-rock output with STEARICA. Elsewhere, the record continues to develop and evolve with tracks such as ‘Upside-Down World’ moving into an altogether more progressive sound combining ambient and melancholic instrumentation with idiosyncratic Japanese guest vocals from Taigen Kawabe of Bo Ningen. 'Wrong Time Wrong Place' also features guest production and electronics by Davide Tomat from the experimental electronic pop band Niagara (Monotreme Records), of which Davide Compagnoni was a founding member.

This is the first album to ever be recorded live in this way, which is a monumental achievement in itself, however KHOMPA has managed to find the perfect balance between style and substance. ‘The Shape Of Drums To Come’ is a consummated and diverse release with a title that embraces the punk-meets-electronic attitude of the record, as well as the innovative side of the project itself. This album will have a clear appeal to the music tech crowd, but there is also a lot to be taken away from the album for those who know nothing about its methodology and everyone in between.

Aaron Holm – album 'The Boy' out 29 July 2016

Album Release: 'The Boy' by Aaron Holm
Release date: 29 July 2016
Label: Dissolve Records
More info: Artist website

Aaron Holm is a Seattle-based producer and musician writing and performing experimental ambient and electronic compositions deep in the depths of the Emerald City. His fascination with ambient came during 1996 travels throughout Southeast Asia, where he listened to tapes of Future Sound of London, Scorn, and Shinjuku Thief while riding on trucks and longboats in Vietnam and Laos. Upon returning to Toronto, he put together his first electronic music studio in a warehouse above a furrier in Chinatown.

Aaron’s field recordings of the birds of the Pantanal and other tropical sounds are blended into his first album, 'Still Dreaming...' while his later ones, simplifying the accompanying textures, capture his travels through India and Pakistan. He’s also been deeply influenced by ambient and electronic pioneers such as Brian Eno, Future Sound of London, Richie Hawtin, Aphex Twin, Bjork, Massive Attack, and Loscil- who all feed indirectly into his work.

Holm took a decade break from music to focus on software and started three high profile technology companies over an 11-year period in Miami, New York, and Seattle before re-engaging with music and founding Dissolve Records in 2013.  He sits on the Boards of several technology companies and Youth in Focus, a non-profit organisation that empowers urban youth through photography.

His ethereal mixes of real and imagined worlds continue in his organic new album, 'The Boy' in which Aaron explores the violence and isolation of the inner city boy as he grows, detaches and himself becomes a father. Pulsing, warm washes of sound in 'Little One’ explore the emotional push and pull of abandonment and a boy taken in and raised by all mothers. The woman’s voice represents the voice of the ocean calling to love and care for the boy.

Other tracks of note include, ‘Catch a Falling Star’, the story of a father’s love for his child and his heartbreak on hearing of the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown.  On this one Holm says:

“On the morning of the shooting, my daughter’s first grade teacher sent out a recording of the children singing ‘Catch A Falling Star’.  The recording is heard at the track start.  As I heard the news of the school shooting, first graders were the victims, I pulled to the side of the road and cried.  The voices in this track soothe broken hearts and the loss of innocence and brings the boy full circle from childhood to fatherhood.”

Sitting in the same space as contemporary artists like Taylor Deupree (who also mastered The Boy), Susumu Yokota, and Jon Hopkins, this haunting yet beautiful new album is filled with sonic solace, calmly bewitching the listener into a state of pure tranquillity.

SQRD new EP 'Gold' due 15 July 2016

EP release: 'Gold' by SQRD
Release date: 15 July 2016
Label: Fresh Milk
More info: Artist Soundcloud

Developed from a background in jazz and classical music, Swedish-born, Berlin-based artist Carl Robin Kirchmann (AKA SQRD) has soaked up the soul of these two cultural Meccas to develop his unique blend of low key, dreamy electronica. With a master’s degree in mathematical engineering under his belt, Kirchmann’s process for creating music is seemingly drawn from his ability to solve equations, experimenting not only with developing his personal tastes and musical disciplines, but also with various vocal and instrumental textures, effects and rhythms; the result of which is his new EP ‘Gold’.

‘Gold’ sits somewhere between the engulfing and benign sounds of The xx and Four Tet, whilst vocally Kirchmann calls to mind the opaque melodies of James Blake and Active Child. It’s a captivating blend of sonic components, which is more supportive and protective than it is forlorn, however there are still wistful and reminiscent undertones throughout. It is the influence of this beguiling honesty and courage that can be heard across tracks such as title-track ‘Gold’ and ‘Would Run Wild’ where soft and sombre electronics meet melancholic yet resolute vocals, which are accompanied by hypnotic oscillating rhythms. Elsewhere on the EP, tracks such as ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ shows clear yet befitting influence from the likes of Caribou and Moderat, with a higher tempo and timbre than that of the rest of the EP, alongside more complex and densely structured samples and percussion. This contrast across the first and last two tracks of the EP perfectly exemplify the themes running throughout the EP and show a clear journey across not only SQRD’s musical journey but also his personal one.

Thematically, the EP is about the end of Kirchmann’s seven year relationship and the process of finding your own path. Speaking about the ‘Gold’ EP SQRD said, “Writing music was an attempt to handle and process what happened and in the same way to find my own path. I sit for hours and hours, I forget about everything else, and just focus all of my energy on the music. Now when I think about it, this might also explain why I want to do everything on my own - the writing, singing and producing - it makes me feel independent and I can do whatever I want from the initial idea to finished track.

SQRD is constantly exploring how he can push the boundaries of writing electronic music, and his experimentation with different tones and moods both sonically and subjectively is what sets him apart from the rest. It’s rare that an artist is able to define their sound so equivocally yet so proficiently, and this short yet consummated EP is just an introduction of what he is capable of.

Ed Scissor & Lamplighter new album our 15 July 2016

Album release: 'Tell Them It’s Winter' by Ed Scissor & Lamplighter
Release date: 15 July 2016
Label: High Focus Records
More info: Label website

Ed Scissor’s new LP 'Tell Them It’s Winter' ruminates over life and love. The LP settles on the notion that every human being is on the hunt for the same thing.

A key player in the Brit rap renaissance, renowned live performer, acclaimed wordsmith and expert storyteller, Ed Scissor’s development tessellates strongly with his ever-blossoming relationship with Glasgow-based producer Lamplighter. The pair have developed into one of the go-to partnerships in the alt-rap soundscape ever since their debut 'Better.Luck.Next.Life' was released to critical acclaim back in 2012 (even though they rarely find themselves in the same room as one another).

Fast forward four years and the duo’s nu-classical compositions are wiser and more profound than ever before. The camaraderie grows more expansive and ear-opening with every song; the music is rich, expansive and rewarding at every turn.

Lamplighter squeezes life's emotional and existential essence into a box marked ‘hip hop’ before it bleeds back out, leaving a trail of nihilistic retro-futurism and romance. His music makes friends of techno, modern classical composition and synth-led film scores before reducing them down to a solitary minimalistic entity. The result is a window into the way he sees the world - past, present and future.

Scissor writes lyrics that extend beyond the realms of reality into a strange left field. It feels like an alternate reality in his head, fuelled by a heady mix of fantasy and reality, umbrella’d under a now customary gothic shroud.

‘Tell Them It’s Winter’ is the next (and quite possibly final) instalment and both Ed Scissor and Lamplighter are super excited for you to hear it.

Jolly Mare debut album 'Mechanics' due 8 April 2016

Album release: 'Mechanics' by Jolly Mare
Release date: 8 April 2016
Label: Bastard Jazz Recordings
More info: Artist Soundcloud

Fabrizio Martina, the man behind Jolly Mare, is a multi-instrumentalist and champion turntablist, with a master degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Vibration Dynamics under his belt. Nicknamed ‘the new face of Italian disco’, he’s currently a full time producer and DJ, taking part in festivals across Europe from Sonar to Harvey’s Discotheque Stage at Bestival. A graduate of Red Bull Music Academy in New York, he has opened acts from Masters at Work to Roy Ayers, worked with the likes of Soul Clap and Thundercat, and has already been featured in the likes of Pitchfork, Mixmag and Okayplayer with his dream-like brand of electro-funk, disco and house.

Jolly Mare’s debut album 'Mechanics' was conceived as a conceptual journey through the mechanics of groove and the dynamics of love. Featuring dew-eyed disco jams, Jolly Mare takes you on aural journey through a blackhole of futuristic funk and fresh, twinkling midnight beats -complete with crunchy, choppy bass riffs and plenty of jazzy synth action that’s bound to have you up and dancing. Nowhere is this more evident in album opener ‘Hun’ with its breezy, rolling pulse and ‘Hungry Angry’ with its slow laser descent into an earthy, gritty guitar groove.

Here’s what Jolly Mare has to say about the mechanical concept behind the album:

“Digital years come with misconceptions about rhythm and groove. A ball bouncing on the floor without gravity and friction could go on endlessly. A drum pattern looped into a DAW can be infinitely repeated…forever…generating nothing but alienation to the listener. But once hidden driving forces begin to act, the game comes to life. The ball starts jumping less on every repetition, and drums played by a real drummer transmits something entirely different on every bar and rhythm becomes groove. Same with the relationship between a man and a woman: without romantic entanglements, this can be a sterile, impersonal interaction. It’s love that gives anything meaning.”

Lisbon Kid debut album due 22 April 2016

Album release: Lisbon Kid
Release date: 22 April 2016
Label: Wall of Sound
More info: Band website

Comprised of the estimable Soho-based, Portuguese musicians, producers and TV ad composers Danny de Matos and Rui da Silva, electronica duo Lisbon Kid are now gearing up to release their eponymously titled debut album. Made from a beguiling mix of electronica and acoustic instruments, often with ambient landscaping and elements of sound design added to a huge song-based pop sensibility and emotional lyrical content, Lisbon Kid have created a consummate debut record which is as diverse as it is adventurous.

Tracks such as the Balearic ‘Sunburst’ show the duo’s song craft by merging effortlessly infectious textured bassline and synth melodies with hazy and laidback ambient beats. Alternative versions of the track have already appeared on leading compilations such as Café Del Mar, Golden Lounge and Balearic prior to its forthcoming release of the original mix as the debut single. Much like a number of other tracks on the record it is incredibly radio and sync friendly but it is also so much more than that.

Tracks such as ‘Last Weekend’ exhibit a starker, yet more playful side to the duo with a raw almost distorted bassline accompanied by a brutally honest narrated stream of consciousness provided by Tony Bignell (Coming of Age). Elsewhere, the album is strewn with pianos, acoustic guitars, string sections and an expansive percussion section. This is where the album picks up its obvious individuality calling to mind artists from a huge range styles and genres with moments that travel from Air to Royksopp, Cinematic Orchestra to Nick Drake, Zero 7 to Pink Floyd and many more.

The debut also features a number of estimable guest appearances from the likes of Sarah Cracknell (St. Etienne), Lisa Billson (Orbital/Loose Salute), James Craise (featured Professor Green singer), electronic diva Queen of Hearts and Icelandic songstress Hafdis Huld. Each guest appearance contributes further personality and uniqueness to each song adding even more diversity to the album.

Speaking on the new album, Danny de Matos said “We wanted to make a record that we loved that would move people and bring a smile to their faces and a tear to their eye. We’re happy to say we’ve done that.”Rui da Silva also speaking on the album said “After so many years producing music for clubs at 4am, it was really exciting to embark on this new project and be able to explore other sonics, bpm’s and escape the limits of dance floormusic. We had immense fun writing and recording this album between London and Lisbon and I can’t wait to share the results with you all. Music for the morning after the night before."

Live shows have previously seen Lisbon Kid being joined by James Craise (Professor Green). From their beginnings at Canvas Art Gallery in London for a select audience of UK’s cutting-edge advertising industry, Lisbon Kid have already played shows as support for M+A in Shoreditch, and private after-party DJ sets at Soho House for Scarlet Johansson’s ‘Under The Skin’ and their international live debut at the Cannes Festival of Creativity.

Similarly, in demand as leftfield remixers, Lisbon Kid have dub-remixed James McArthur’s ‘Lawn Order’ for Chris Coco’s Melodica label and ‘Confused’ for The Blockheads’ Remixes Album. They have also recently remixed singles from Kids On Bridges and Ekkoes and The Woodentops for Wall Of Sound.

Lisbon Kid very recently signed to the renowned eclectic label Wall Of Sound, who have previously released albums from the likes of: Royksopp, Grace Jones, Mogwai, The Clash, Kids On Bridges and more. The multifarious nature of the label is the perfect fit for the debut album and mirrors Lisbon Kid's individual intent to merge various styles and influences in their songwriting. Speaking on the recent signing Mark Jones (label founder) said in Music Week “It’s great to have Lisbon Kid on Wall of Sound with their beautiful songs and soundscapes that touch you inside and out. I’m actually now officially a Portugeezer!”

Between them both Danny de Matos and Rui da Silva have had success on a worldwide level as award-winning writers and producers over a wide range of genres and projects. It is this combination of talent, experience and personality which has allowed the duo to create a debut album filled with contemplative ambience andemotive and hook driven moments that sink into the mind and beg repeated listening. Lisbon Kid have only just begun, but their proficiency gives the project the feeling that it has been in development for years. This is a debut that loudly broadcasts its intention, Lisbon Kid mean business and we know it.

Gunship to re-release self-titled album on cassette with Commodore 64 game

Cassette / game release: Gunship
Release date: 9 December 2015
More info: Band website

GUNSHIP is a neon soaked, late night, sonic getaway drive, dripping with luscious analogue synthesizers, cinematic vocals and cyberpunk values, exploding from the front cover of a dusty plastic VHS case which has lain forgotten since 1984. Created by Dan Haigh, Alex Westaway and Alex Gingell, GUNSHIP is an evolution of the of the recently popularised synthwave genre, which was originally started by Rosso Corsa records & The Valerie Collective artists.

Today GUNSHIP return with another world first, salvaging yet another relic from the retro gaming hall of fame. The band are re-releasing their critically acclaimed self-titled album on cassette. On side-a the golden cassette features GUNSHIP’s self-titled album and on side-b, Jeff Minter’s classic Commodore 64 game ‘Attack Of The Mutant Camels’. Not only is this the first cassette album release to feature a built in C64 game, but this version of the album will also be the only version of the album to feature the April Towers remix of ‘The Mountain’, which was premiered with Earmilk earlier this year.

Speaking on the new release GUNSHIP said, 'The games for the early video game systems like the Commodore Vic 20, C64, Atari 2600 and latterly the Amiga 500 were huge influences on our imaginations growing up. At that me game development felt like a genuine free for all where unrestricted creativity flourished and imagination was unchecked by the yet to arrive influence of big business and its risk-averse practices. We love this era for its simplistic charm and raw creativity and certainly try to take these influences and values and implement them in GUNSHIP’s music.

We worked with Jed Shepherd at Post/Pop records to cook up a version of our album on gold cassette tape, with our music on side A and a Commodore 64 game on side B to hopefully bring some attention back to this fantastic era in game design. It’s an honour to share a cassette tape with Jeff Minter! The man is a icon in the classic gaming world. His games, including ‘Attack of the Mutant Camels’ and ‘Llamatron’, were cornerstones of our childhood and those influences certainly live on in GUNSHIP’s approach to writing music today.'

GUNSHIP’s debut album has previously received acclaim from the likes of IGN, Nerdist, Bloody Disgusting, WIRED, Metal Sucks, Yahoo, Games Radar, Rockstar, Kotaku, FACT Mag, Digital Spy, Shortlist, Zoo, Kerrang, Big Cheese, Evening Standard, Electronic Sound VICE and many more. The cassette is due for release on 9th December 2015, and can be pre-ordered HERE

Gunship Commodore 64 Competition

It’s time to put your retro gaming chops to the test! To accompany the bands cassette release, in true GUNSHIP style the band have also launched a competition to win a one-off, custom neon pink Commodore 64 to play their new cassette/cartridge release.

The competition is open now and the challenge is simple, visit this online emulator HERE, and attack your keyboard in an effort to reach the highest score possible in ‘Llamatron!

GUNSHIP is more of a story than a soundtrack, written large across an eighties action cinema screen, where the narrative interweaves romance, hope, fear, technology, the threat of nuclear obliteration, and ultimately the need to celebrate life. Both bleak and dystopian at times but also progressive, uplifting and danceable.

GUNSHIP’s sound is created with vintage analogue synthesizers and other retro electronic gear available in the 1980s. The music is driven by retro gear, inspired by nostalgia for a bygone era but they use this approach to yield something fresh and new. The debut album is sonically diverse - blending sweeping fluorescent synth lines with fever pitched and adrenalizing electric bass arpeggios. This musical foundation, sometimes dark and brooding, sometimes romantic, underpins emotive and cinematic vocals.

The album also features guest vocals by Lou Hayter (New Young Pony Club), Martin Grech, and Stella Le Page. Upcoming remixes include Miami Nights 1984, Make Up And Vanity Set, April Towers and Carpenter Brut.

Buy the 16-bit boxed set now:
The GUNSHIP debut album is now available for purchase on iTunes. The album contains 13 tracks - 10 GUNSHIP originals and 3 remixes from leading synthwave artists: Carpenter Brut, Miami Nights 1984 and Makeup and Vanity Set. Purchase the album here
