Released in July 1968, In Search of the Lost Chord is regarded by many to be the group’s masterpiece. A concept album, concerning itself with the spiritual and philosophical concerns of the psychedelic era, the group eschewed the use of an orchestra, opting instead for the Mellotron (played by keyboardist Mike Pinder) and other exotic instrumentation, with which they experimented and played themselves, including flute, sitar, tabla and cello.

The Moody Blues have been at the forefront of the UK’s classic rock music scene for over forty years and have continued to be a mainstay of concert stages, recording studios and the airwaves to the present day. During their immensely successful career, they have sold, according to the band’s files, in excess of 70 million albums worldwide and have been the recipients of numerous prestigious awards.

Glen Frey and JD Souther album out 28 September 2018

00602567599623-Cvr.jpg

Album release: Longbranch/Pennywhistle by Glen Frey and JD Souther
Release date: 28 September 2018
Label: Geffen/UMe

Los Angeles – August 3, 2018 – Longbranch/Pennywhistle, the legendary 1969 collaboration between late Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey and longstanding songwriting partner, JD Souther, will make its CD debut as well as return to vinyl for the first time in nearly 50 years on September 28 via Geffen/UMe. The album has been remastered and remixed by acclaimed producer/engineer Elliot Scheiner (Eagles, Steely Dan, Toto) and Souther. Released earlier this year as part of the Glenn Frey box set 'Above The Clouds: The Collection', the eponymous album is being made available as a standalone CD and on 180-gram black vinyl for the first time ever. Pre-order Longbranch/Pennywhistle here.

Longbranch/Pennywhistle represented the budding essence of a songwriting team that would tap into something quite intuitively special that eventually took flight on such well-loved and enduring Eagles tracks to come such as 'Best of My Love', 'New Kid in Town', 'Heartache Tonight' and 'The Sad Café'. Agrees Souther, “Longbranch/Pennywhistle gives you some sort of foundation for what’s to come.”

Produced by Tom Thacker, Longbranch/Pennywhistle boasts an impressive list of top-tier collaborators including rockabilly guitar legend James Burton, slide maestro Ry Cooder, pedal-steel legend Buddy Emmons, Wrecking Crew pianist Larry Knechtel, session drummer Jim Gordon, bass master Joe Osborn, and fiddle player nonpareil Doug Kershaw.

A second album was never cut and the band subsequently broke up. Frey went on to co-found the Eagles, occasionally with Souther’s songwriting pen and vocal harmonies in tow, while Souther mainly focused on a successful solo career (“You’re Only Lonely,”) and the occasional duet with the likes of James Taylor (“Her Town, Too”) and Linda Ronstadt (“Prisoner In Disguise”), in addition to authoring signature hits interpreted by the likes of Dixie Chicks (“I’ll Take Care Of You”) that yet again served to redefine the country genre.

Forever intertwined together in Longbranch/Pennywhistle, Souther and Frey will always represent the pioneering So Cal-transplanted songwriting duo who opened the door on a genre that ultimately knows no limits. Songs like album standouts 'Kite Woman' and 'Run, Boy, Run' serve as the literal seeds of the country-rock movement Frey and the Eagles perfected to a T.

“Glenn Frey was my roommate, best friend, and first songwriting partner in Los Angeles,” Souther says. “We knew we were onto something original, as are most young musicians, including our soon-to-be friends and collaborators Jackson Browne and Don Henley; but quite honestly, we were just trying to do our best work in a very competitive environment. If in doing that we evolved a new architecture of some sort, fine, but remember we were all listening carefully to each other and to the giants before and among us. We listened to Miles, Hank Williams, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Trane, Bach, Cole Porter, Tim Hardin, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and Carole King to name a few. We always said that if you want to make great music you should listen to great music. This album was our freshman project."

Video premiere: 'Carolina' by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real
Release date: Out now
Label: Fantasy Records
More info: Band website

  • Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real premiere their new video 'Carolina' (featuring Lady Gaga) with Rolling Stone.
  • Band perform at The Garage, London on 10 July 2018.

Following the release their new, self-titled album via Fantasy Records, UK tour dates and a critically acclaimed appearance at C2C, Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real have now premiered a new video for album track 'Carolina' with Rolling Stone.

After a decade on the road, on their own and playing behind the legendary Neil Young, Lukas Nelson & POTR have developed into one of America’s most dazzling live acts, attracting a deeply devoted following.

With influences that range literate Texas songsmiths like surrogate ‘uncles’ Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings, to J.J. Cale, The Band, Clapton-era Delaney & Bonnie, Neil and of course, Lukas’ dad Willie Nelson, the new album has been hailed as a major leap forward by publications around the world including Rolling Stone, Associated Press, UNCUT, Mojo, Classic Rock, Country Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Texas Monthly, American Songwriter, Uproxx, All Music and many more.

Recorded at The Village Studios in West Los Angeles, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real was produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer) and features the band’s new six-piece line-up: Lukas Nelson (guitar, vocals), Tato Melgar (percussion), Anthony LoGerfo (drums), Corey McCormick (bass, vocals) along with new members Jesse Siebenberg (steel guitars, Farfisa organ, vocals) and Alberto Bof (piano, Wurlitzer, B3). Jess Wolfe and Holly Lessig of the indie-pop group Lucius contribute angelic background vocals on five tracks and Lady Gaga added stirring vocals to 'Carolina' and 'Find Yourself'.  Elsewhere, the lilting, Glen Campbell inspired gem, 'Just Outside of Austin' features a classic Willie Nelson guitar solo, and piano from Lukas’ 86-year-old Aunt Bobbi.

Praise for ‘Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real’:

  • “At 28, Lukas is the real deal and deserves to be treated seriously independent of his father's legacy.” — Associated Press
  • "Lukas Nelson's live show is a thing to behold, full of frenetic energy and the singer-guitarist's infectious charisma." — Rolling Stone
  • “The sextet’s latest displays a newfound confidence, brokering country-soul, Southern rock, and R&B with some panache.” — UNCUT
  • "This self-titled affair mixes rattling good Southern soul with country-rock"
  • —Daily Express
  • “The band’s best work...the record is a huge leap forward for Nelson, whose improved songwriting prowess is evident." — Entertainment Weekly
  • "Lukas is a force to be reckoned with." — Uproxx

Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders new album due 4 May 2018

jack-ladder.jpg

Album release: ‘Blue Poles’ by Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders
Release date: 4 May 2018
Label: Self Portrait Records
More info: Band website

Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders return with a first taste from their forthcoming album ‘Blue Poles’, the first new music since the May 2017 single 'Susan'.

Jack has also announced solo support dates with fellow Australian Alex Cameron across Europe and the UK in March and April. Stream / watch 'White Flag'.

'White Flag' is an unlikely love song about surrendering to a prison that binds two people together. In the music video we find him in Indonesia, struggling with a special kind of captivity. “It’s written from two perspectives”, says Ladder. “I didn’t want to duet so I sang both parts. It allows for more mystery.” The video and the forthcoming album maintain the recurring bone dry sense of humour that has been a thread through all of his work.

“I’ve got no fingers left to cross, each time I leave you cut one off.”

'Blue Poles' will be the fifth album from one of the most singular characters in Australian music. Sentimental and mournful, sardonic and surreal. Jack Ladder brings that towering and tender baritone to bear on tales of beauty, love, hope and redemption. A master of musical narrative, he conjures lyrics that celebrate the absurdity and sincerity of the human condition in songs that groove in subtle ways.

Burke Reid produced HURTSVILLE (2011), Kim Moyes shaped Playmates (2014), but this time Jack Ladder takes total control of his creative process.  “Blue Poles is the most melodic thing I’ve ever done”, he reflects. “I really pushed myself into some uncomfortable places.”

'Blue Poles' was recorded at Oceanic Studios in Sydney, engineered by Tim Whitten (The Necks, The Church, The Go-Betweens) and mixed in Los Angeles by Noah Georgeson (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom). Once again he’s joined by The Dreamlanders, Australia’s very own misfit supergroup made up of Donny Benet on bass, Laurence Pike on drums and this time two guitarists - Kirin J Callinan and Ben Hauptmann.

He has been invited to tour with some of the world’s most intriguing musicians: Angel Olsen, Weyes Blood, Father John Misty, Florence and the Machine and of late has been touring the US, UK and Europe with dear friend Alex Cameron.

The Black Angels new album 'Death Song' 21 April 2017

The Black Angels: 'Death Song' by The Black Angels
Release date: 21 April 2017
Label: Partisan Records
More info: Band website

The Black Angels have shared the second track from their upcoming album ‘Death Song’, out April 21st on Partisan Records. Called ‘I’d Kill For Her’, the new track just premiered via Dangerous Minds, who called the band “psychedelia’s premier standard bearers”. They also chatted with the band’s Alex Maas about the new project, read/listen here.

Produced by Phil Ek (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, The Shins), ‘Death Song’ features some of the heaviest music these psych rockers have ever put to wax – slow-burning, menacing fuzz earworms meditating on the realities of society and devotion. The album’s opening track, 'Currency', has already earned raves everywhere from the New York Times to NPR Music, who say “heavy psych rarely feels as fresh as it does with The Black Angels”.  Listen to 'Currency' here

On April 22nd, a special limited edition release of ‘Death Song’ will be made available in honor of Record Store Day, including the new album on two glow-in-the-dark vinyl LPs and packaging printed entirely in blacklight-reactive ink. Sneak peek here.

The Black Angels performed at SXSW last week, and kick off an extensive tour next month including a headline set at one of the first-ever shows at new NYC venue Brooklyn Steel. The band will be supported by A Place to Bury Strangers.

The Dream ‘Get Dreamy’ deluxe reissue 3 March 2017

Album release: ‘Get Dreamy’ by The Dream
Release date: 3 March 2017
Label: Round 2 Records

From the somewhat sparse, yet unique catalogue of adventurous, high-quality rock music coming out of Scandinavia in the late 60’s, the sole album ‘Get Dreamy’ by The Dream has been one of the most hunted treasures. Originally released in 1967, the album proves that the youth of Norway were just as happy swinging as their blighty cousins. It also marks the beginning of guitar legend Terje Rypdal’s journey from beat music and pop into new musical territories, which would ultimately lead him to become a key player in the European jazz world.

Any album that opens with a track (‘Green Things’) describing the heartbreak of aliens abducting your love, is clearly out of this world. But ‘Get Dreamy’ somehow fits there, and it doesn’t feel alarming when it takes you with it. Getting lost in the cosmos and making a great time out of it was the aim in ’67 and The Dream follow the tradition well. Having clear references to The Beach Boys (Driftin’), Floyd (‘Aint No Use) as well as some truly lust-filled riffs that sound like unreleased Hendrix tracks from a lost session, The Dream’s highly personal and almost fearless take on free rock and psychedelia was, actually, the first of its kind in Norway. With elements of jazz, glam horror (Hey Jimi), hazy sounding pop and the occasional whimsical Vaudeville-vibes so typical of 1967, it is a special slice of vinyl from the era.

Round 2 proudly presents this rarity and true Norwegian classic, remastered from the original tapes and with liner notes written by Rypdal afficionado and guitar ace, Reine Fiske (Dungen, The Amazing).

Cream 'Fresh Cream' deluxe edition due 27 January 2017

Album releases: 'Fresh Cream' by Cream
Release date: 27 January 2017
Label: Polydor
More info: Fresh Cream website

Late January 2017 sees the deluxe edition release of 'Fresh Cream', the debut album by British, blues boom, power trio, Cream.

The 3-CD + 1 Blu-Ray Audio disc come housed in a gatefold sleeve within a rigid slipcase and includes a 64-page hardback book, featuring new sleeve notes by respected Rolling Stone writer, David Fricke. The set comprises various alternate and new stereo mixes plus several, previously unreleased BBC sessions.

A special 6LP 180g Vinyl edition of 'Fresh Cream' will also be released in April 2017.

Originally released in 1966, at the height of the UK blues bloom, 'Fresh Cream' showcased the not inconsiderable talents of three of the then music scene’s brightest lights: Eric Clapton fresh from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers; drummer, Ginger Baker straight from the Graham Bond Organisation and versatile bassist and musician, Jack Bruce who, at the time, had just left Manfred Mann. Collectively the three had decided to give up their roles as much sought after sidemen to form their own super group.

Coming together as Cream in the early summer of 1966, the trio moved at impressive speed to make the release of 'Fresh Cream' in December of the same year. Highlights include the racing harmonica work-out and the call and response excitements on Muddy Waters’ Rollin’ and Tumblin’, a spine-tingling vocal on the Willie Dixon classic, Spoonful, as well as the self-penned Sleepy Time Time, which gave Clapton a free hand to wake up all and sundry. Their rousing treatment of the traditional standard, Cat’s Squirrel alerted listeners to just how well Clapton, Baker and Bruce musically complemented each other.

Both formats are also available in a Special Edition Deluxe Box that will include both Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film and bonus content, as well as an exclusively produced Bob Dylan magazine that features reproductions of historical articles about the artist, plus three high-quality lithographic photo prints of Dylan, all in a deluxe portfolio.

Produced by Jeff Rosen (American Roots Music) and Nigel Sinclair (The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years),  along with Susan Lacy (American Masters) and Anthony Wall (BBC Arena), the 3 ½-hour film focuses on Dylan’s life and music from 1961 to 1966, detailing the artist’s journey from his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota through his emergence in the folk music scene of New York’s Greenwich Village to his controversial decision to go “electric” and his rise to the pinnacle of international fame and cultural impact.   No Direction Home: Bob Dylan features rare performance footage and interviews with artists and musicians whose lives intertwined with Dylan’s during this era, while Dylan himself talks openly and extensively about this critical period in his career in interviews shot exclusively for this film.

The film features rare treasures from Dylan’s extensive film, tape and photograph collection, including footage from Murray Lerner’s film Festival documenting Dylan’s performances at the 1963, 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, previously unreleased outtakes from D.A. Pennebaker’s famed 1967 documentary Don’t Look Back, and interviews with Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur, and many others.

The film met with enthusiastic audience reception and universal critical acclaim when it first premiered on PBS, BBC and other prestigious international outlets in the autumn of 2005 and simultaneously released on DVD.  Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun Times, “[The film] creates a portrait that is deep, sympathetic, perceptive and yet finally leaves Dylan shrouded in mystery, which is where he properly lives.”  Frazier Moore of Associated Press called it, “a film I recommend not only to Dylan devotees and neophytes alike, but also to anyone trying to reconnect with where America was then, and grasp where it is today.”  The Hollywood Reporter’s Glenn Abel wrote that the film was, “as good as it gets in music documentaries,” while Variety’s Phil Gallo predicted that “some of the footage will startle even the most dedicated Dyalnologists.”

'No Direction Home: Bob Dylan'; A Martin Scorsese Picture is a production of Spitfire Pictures, Grey Water Park Production, Thirteen/WNET New York and Sikelia Productions, in co-production with Vulcan Productions, BBC and NHK.

D Generation announce first album in 17 years

Album release: 'Nothing Is Anywhere' by D Generation
Release date: 29 July 2014
Label: Bastard Basement
More info: Band website

D Generation - Jesse Malin, Danny Sage, Howie Pyro, Richard Bacchus and Michael Wildwood – is widely regarded as one of the most important and unsung rock 'n' roll bands of the past 25 years.  On 29th July these five childhood friends will release 'Nothing Is Anywhere' (Bastard Basement Records), their first album in 17 years. The band will return to Irving Plaza in NYC on July 30 (tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here), for a hometown record release show, with additional tour dates to follow.

Produced by guitarist Danny Sage, 'Nothing Is Anywhere'; is a first-or-second-take album, recorded in basements under Avenue A and the Magic Shop in NYC. “We’ve finally made a record that represents us,” says Sage. “We make a really good noise on stage, and this album is a little more snotty, nasty.  The needles are in the red a bit more.

”In the bombed-out warehouses of early-90s Brooklyn, D Generation formed as a reaction to the culture. “We decided to do another record because we still have a fire under us,” says Jesse. “The world is even more full of shit than it was when we were in our 20s. One digitally connected highway of invasion and disposableness, burning through the planet and time.” 'Nothing Is Anywhere' became an escape, both a continuation of their lives and a way to remember where they came from.

On the autobiographical 'Apocalypse Kids,' D Generation might have summed up their story in four lines: "slip through the cracks like a criminal / lost in a packet full of chemicals / from 7th Street to The New York Times."

“We grew up together as misfits who always turned towards music as an escape and a way out,” says Jesse. “We always had each other”.

“Bands should be a gang, a brotherhood,” adds Malin, who began playing music with Danny in Queens at age of 13. “We’ve all known each other forever,” says Sage. “We’re like a weird family that you can never leave, but somehow it all makes sense.”

Small Faces albums release on 180g vinyl on 22nd June

Album release: Small Faces and In The Beginning
Release date: 22 June 2015
Label: Universal Music
More info: www.thesmallfaces.com

Between spring 1965, when they began rehearsing at the Ruskin Arms in East London's Manor Park, and June 1967, with their farewell Decca release, The Small Faces were emblematic of a fast-moving youth culture. Mod-ish street style peacocks and R&B/soul obsessives to a man, they were young, hip and hyper.

Their self-titled debut album, released in May 1966, includes the hit singles Whatcha Gonna Do About It and Sha-La-La-La-Lee and was well received by music critics and fans alike, rising to number three on the UK album chart and remaining at the top for several weeks.

It represented a three-pronged alliance between the band’s concert set, a couple of Tin Pan Alley-style ’gifts’ bestowed upon them and a clutch of surprisingly assured originals.

Hot under the collar and hastily executed, Small Faces had pop, soul an (rare for a beat combo) very little in the way of 12-bar rock ‘n’ roll. Above all the record caught the flavour of those changing times.

From the Beginning was the (unofficial) retrospective album released in June 1967. It reached number 17 in the UK Album Chart. It is somewhat notorious for being a record put together by the band’s former manager Don Arden after his charges had dispensed with his services and signed with Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate label. It’s a mix of A-sides, first album outtakes and works-in-progress for a second LP and contains an inventive cover of Del Shannon's classic Runaway as well their biggest hit, All or Nothing.

The latter was the highlight of the Small Faces live set, the centrepiece of From The Beginning and, reckoned Steve Marriott, one of two key Swinging London anthems (the other, he said, was The Who’s My Generation). Built on chord changes that would have been second nature to the Stax house band, the song brought Memphis to Pimlico and summoned a career-best performance from Marriott. It had power, soul and in September 1966 it shared the Number One spot with The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine.

New album from Hayseed Dixie: "Hair Down To My Grass"

Album release: "Hair Down To My Grass" by Hayseed Dixie
Release date: 12 January 2015
Listen / more information: on official Hayseed Dixie website

“I enjoyed this and...on further investigation...it’s not good...it’s fabulous!” - Brian May, Queen

“This is great! I can’t wait to get the royalty check!” - Gene Simmons, KISS

Hayseed Dixie began in the summer of 2000 in the fertile valley of Deer Lick Holler, deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee USA. In this area which was completely isolated from outside cultural and musical influence, the boys grew up playing the traditional music of their forefathers on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar and acoustic bass.

All of this changed abruptly one afternoon when a stranger crashed his car into a stately old oak tree on a particularly dangerous curve, which the locals refer to as the “Devil’s Elbow.” Sadly, the stranger expired, but his legacy lives on! As the boys searched through the wreckage looking for identification, they discovered several vinyl AC/DC albums. After playing these back on an old Edison 78rpm Victrola, everyone agreed that the songs were rather fine country music . . . and that the Lost Highway of Brother Hank Williams and this Highway To Hell of AC/DC were indeed the exact same road!  And the rest is now enshrined in musical history.

Hayseed Dixie are now the acknowledged creators of the musical genre, Rockgrass. They have released 15 albums since 2001, consisting of both original material and reinterpretations of previously rendered songs, selling a combined total of over 500,000 copies. They have also performed over 1,000 live shows in 31 different countries.

More recently, Hayseed Dixie have been exploring the inspired catalogue of the stadium rock of the 1970’s and 1980’s. This interest began during a 2014 Spring tour of Germany, in which the band heard the song “Eye of the Tiger” 6 different times on 6 different German radio stations in a single day while driving between Dortmund and Frankfurt. “As the seed is planted, so the tree shall grow” - this very quote appears on the inner sleeve of the 1980 album “Escape” by Journey. How true indeed.

“Hair Down To My Grass” is the newest release from Hayseed Dixie and was recorded in the Mountains of Cumbria in a converted barn.

Hayseed Dixie are:

  • John Wheeler aka Barley Scotch - guitar, fiddle and singing
  • Jake Bakesnake Byers - bass and harmonizing
  • Hippy Joe Hymas - mandolin and harmonizing
  • Johnny Butten - banjo and harmonising

Tracklisting

  1. Don’t Stop Believing
  2. Eye Of The Tiger
  3. The Final Countdown
  4. We’re Not Gonna Take It
  5. Summer Of 69
  6. Pour Some Sugar On Me
  7. Dude Looks Like A Lady
  8. Livin’ On A Prayer
  9. Wind De Veränderung
  10. We Are The Road Crew
  11. Comfortably Numb
  12. Don’t Fear The Reaper

Press quotes

“The Hayseed’s berserk hedonism is indeed refreshing! ***** (5 Stars)” - The Guardian

“Hayseed Dixie highlights the worth of mountain music to all things rock: energy, dirt-punk rhythm, careening harmonies and the fundamental right of all no-good fuck-ups to raise hell come Saturday night.” - Uncut

“Superlative musicians with a deep love and understanding of the dynamics of both modern rock and ancient hillbilly music” - The Times

Dire Straits: The Studio Albums 1978-1991

Dire Straits box set

Box set release: Dire Straits - The Studio Albums 1978-1991
Release date: 25 November 2013
Label: Universal

Formed in 1977 Dire Straits, led by Mark Knopfler, were one of the iconic groups of the late 20th Century. When they first appeared on the London live circuit, their timeless music, faultless musicianship and memorable songs quickly connected with music lovers. From the start, it was clear that Dire Straits would set their own path and while the then-current zeitgeist of new wave showed there was an appetite for the new, Dire Straits proved that classic song writing would never go out of fashion.

Working hard touring, writing and recording, they released a series of ever more successful albums and by 1985 they were the biggest selling band in the world. Dire Straits appeal was almost instantly universal. They travelled the globe building an enormous and loyal international following. Their keynote songs, such as ‘Sultans Of Swing’, ‘Romeo And Juliet’ and ‘Money For Nothing’ dominated the airwaves in the 80s and the revolutionary new music TV channels such as MTV propelled the songs to become international standards. They remain one of the most played bands on radio to this day.

THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978 – 1991 brings together all six of the band’s studio albums:

DIRE STRAITS (1978)
COMMUNIQUE (1979)
MAKING MOVIES (1980)
LOVE OVER GOLD (1982)
BROTHERS IN ARMS (1985)
ON EVERY STREET (1991)

Bernie Grundman mastered the first four titles from analogue masters, with lacquers cut by Grundman and Chris Bellman; Brothers in Arms and On Every Street mastered by Bob Ludwig from digital masters, and cut by Chris Bellman. All are pressed on beautiful 180gm vinyl. The CD running order with full length versions of the tracks have been restored to Brothers In Arms, now presented as a 2xLP set, as well as a double vinyl of On Every Street. With all original artwork restored, the six albums are packed in a handsome box set slipcase . All come complete with download cards and are available as a strictly limited edition.

2-CD Deluxe Edition of The Kinks' 'Muswell Hillbilllies' announced

Album reissue: Muswell Hillbillies, 2-CD Deluxe edition, by The Kinks
Release date: October 7th 2013
Label: Universal
More info: on official site

“I'm a 20th century man, but I don't want to be here," declares Ray Davies on ‘Muswell Hillbillies’ opening track, with a typically wry statement-of-intent. Originally released November 1971, this classic Kinks album was the follow-up to the seminal ‘Lola vs Powerman’ album and the first with their new label RCA.

Written and produced by Ray Davies, ‘Muswell Hillbillies’ was something of a departure for the Kinks, musically reflecting their fascination with America while lyrically embracing their British roots.

This new 2-CD deluxe version features 5 previously unreleased tracks, including ‘Lavender Lane’ and early demo ‘Nobody’s Fool’, as well as alternative song versions and BBC sessions. All have been re-mastered from original tapes by well-known Kinks archivist Andrew Sandoval, and includes a booklet designed by award winning art director Phil Smee.

The album is a total joy and veers effortlessly from rowdy blues and boozy vaudeville to the country sound of its title track and music-hall fuelled ‘Alcohol’.

‘Muswell Hillbillies’ ranks amongst the Kinks' best, which is really saying something.

In 1971 the Kinks line-up was: Ray Davies (guitar and vocals); Dave Davies (guitar and vocals), John Gosling (keyboards), John Dalton (bass), Mick Avory (drums).

A new Ray Davies book - Americana: The Kinks, The Road and The Perfect Riff is published by Virgin Books this autumn.

'Zone-O-Tone': the new record from Andy Fairweather Low and the Lowriders

Andy Fairweather Low's new album

Album release: Zone-O-Tone by Andy Fairweather Low and the Lowriders
Label: Proper Records
Release date: September 16
Tour: October - December 2013
Listen: on official website

Zone-O-Tone” contains twelve new songs I’ve written that were inspired by the music of Stax and Atlantic soul, The Four Aces, Josef Locke, Johnny Kidd, Lonnie Donegan, The Shadows and many more. I am of my time, so are the songs and so is this album!” Andy Fairweather Low

Andy Fairweather Low came to prominence in the late Sixties as the lead vocalist with Amen Corner and scored several hits, including the number 1 (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice. He went on to enjoy a successful solo career, and enjoyed another huge hit with Wide Eyes And Legless. But his solo career was put on hold as he became increasingly popular as a sideman and soon became known as the “ultimate guitarist to the stars”, building an extraordinary reputation that has endured to this day as he’s played a crucial role working with the likes of Eric Clapton, The Who, George Harrison, Roger Waters, Bill Wyman and many more.

Fortunately for us, Andy Fairweather Low has somehow found time to make a brand new record of his own. Zone-O-Tone features twelve new songs which draw heavily on his diverse musical influences. The musicians featured on this terrific project are also touring with him from October and are a who’s who of the best players on the rock scene. Joining Andy is Paul Beavis on drums (Thea Gilmore, Robbie Macintosh & Sunday All Over The World), Nick Pentelow on saxes and clarinet (Roy Wood, Roger Chapman and Gary Moore) and long standing associate Dave Bronze on bass (Clapton, Concert For George, Dear Mr Fantasy tribute to Jim Capaldi).
