Virgin Front Line: Sounds of Reality

Box set release: “Virgin Front Line: Sounds of Reality” (Various)
Release date: 11 August 2014
Label: Universal

On 10 March 1978 Virgin Records launched a label that, throughout the remainder of the decade, would set the benchmark for Roots Reggae: Front Line.

In the space of just under two years, some 46 albums and 26 singles saw issue on the iconic imprint, with its releases consistently of the highest calibre, and rating among the very best music Jamaica had to offer.

Front Line’s brief but glorious existence as the world’s greatest Roots Reggae label is celebrated with this deluxe box set, which across its 5 discs features many of Jamaica’s greatest talents, performing 92 of the most enduring Roots, Dub, Lovers Rock and DJ sounds of the seventies, with over 31 tracks new to CD, of which a third are previously unissued.

Also included in the package is a 52 page booklet, which opens with a typically captivating foreword from John Lydon, whose talent scouting trip to Jamaica with Richard Branson early in 1978 was key to Virgin’s acquisition of some of the finest Reggae recordings of the era.

Peppered with fascinating imagery, including numerous previously unseen shots from the trip taken by world renowned photographer Dennis Morris, every key episode during Front Line’s brief yet glorious history is disclosed, courtesy of fascinating anecdotes from Don Letts, the label’s original manager Jumbo Vanrenen and its designer Brian Cooke, whose original drafts for the iconic imprint are revealed for the first time ever.

As an added bonus, the set also contains four high quality reproductions of classic posters from the seventies, as well as a car sticker, based on the now impossibly rare Front Line Rockers badge from 1976.

This, the most comprehensive collection of Front Line tracks ever to see issue, pays due homage to the legendary label and flawlessly illustrates just why continues to be widely revered by Reggae fans around the world, more than 36 years after its launch.

Full tracklisting available on request.

The Motown 7s Box - Volume 2: music from classic artists on 7" singles

Box set release: The Motown 7s Box - Volume 2
Release date: 2 June, 2014
Label: Universal

Following on from the overwhelming success of Volume 1, USM is proud to present ‘The Motown 7s Box Volume 2’.

Once more we celebrate “The Sound Of Young America”. As with Volume 1, many of the tracks included here were never released at their time of recording, for a variety of reasons.  Some got pushed to one side as albums usually only contained 12 songs and a few more were usually cut at the session - sometimes other Motown artists were given the songs and other versions were released, or it was simply a matter of the tracks being “rejected” at the weekly A+R meeting held with Berry Gordy and his team of songwriters and producers. The result: a source of brilliant recordings to release on highly desirable 7s.

From Universal: “For Volume 2 a few changes to the box packaging have been made. We have adapted the label copy insert into a more substantial four page card leaflet.  Vinyl will also be manufactured at Optimal to give the authentic push out centre hole of the time.  Sleeves will be paper rather than gloss card.  The selection of tracks again represent highly sought after vinyl releases compiled by journalist and DJ Richard Searling.  Boxes will be limited edition and numbered.”

Dire Straits: The Studio Albums 1978-1991

Dire Straits box set

Box set release: Dire Straits - The Studio Albums 1978-1991
Release date: 25 November 2013
Label: Universal

Formed in 1977 Dire Straits, led by Mark Knopfler, were one of the iconic groups of the late 20th Century. When they first appeared on the London live circuit, their timeless music, faultless musicianship and memorable songs quickly connected with music lovers. From the start, it was clear that Dire Straits would set their own path and while the then-current zeitgeist of new wave showed there was an appetite for the new, Dire Straits proved that classic song writing would never go out of fashion.

Working hard touring, writing and recording, they released a series of ever more successful albums and by 1985 they were the biggest selling band in the world. Dire Straits appeal was almost instantly universal. They travelled the globe building an enormous and loyal international following. Their keynote songs, such as ‘Sultans Of Swing’, ‘Romeo And Juliet’ and ‘Money For Nothing’ dominated the airwaves in the 80s and the revolutionary new music TV channels such as MTV propelled the songs to become international standards. They remain one of the most played bands on radio to this day.

THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1978 – 1991 brings together all six of the band’s studio albums:

DIRE STRAITS (1978)
COMMUNIQUE (1979)
MAKING MOVIES (1980)
LOVE OVER GOLD (1982)
BROTHERS IN ARMS (1985)
ON EVERY STREET (1991)

Bernie Grundman mastered the first four titles from analogue masters, with lacquers cut by Grundman and Chris Bellman; Brothers in Arms and On Every Street mastered by Bob Ludwig from digital masters, and cut by Chris Bellman. All are pressed on beautiful 180gm vinyl. The CD running order with full length versions of the tracks have been restored to Brothers In Arms, now presented as a 2xLP set, as well as a double vinyl of On Every Street. With all original artwork restored, the six albums are packed in a handsome box set slipcase . All come complete with download cards and are available as a strictly limited edition.

Super deluxe 'Give Me Strength' Eric Clapton box set to be released

Box set release: Give Me Strength by Eric Clapton
Release date: 25 November 2013
Label: Universal
Listen: on Eric Clapton official website

The fertile year that signalled the spectacular creative resurgence of Eric Clapton will be celebrated with the 25th November 2013 Super Deluxe release of Give Me Strength: The '74/'75 Recordings.

This exemplary collection features no fewer than 29 bonus tracks (12 of them previously unreleased) from the extraordinary period between April 1974 and June 1975, in which E.C. reclaimed and enhanced his status as one of rock’s most legendary guitarists and singer-songwriters.

Give Me Strength houses expanded, remastered versions of his acclaimed studio albums from the period, 461 Ocean Boulevard and There’s One In Every Crowd, the subsequent live set E.C. Was Here (now both remixed and expanded into a double CD), and a disc containing the complete, fabled Freddie King Criteria Studios Session. A sixth Blu-Ray disc adds a newly-available 5.1 Surround Sound mix of 461 and the original quadrophonic mix of both studio releases and the live album.

461 Ocean Boulevard, released in the summer of 1974 and named for the Miami beachfront mansion where the band lived during the recordings, marked Clapton’s return to recording after an absence of three years, and emphatically announced his creative and personal rehabilitation. Previewed by his signature interpretation of Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff, which topped the Hot 100, the album followed suit, leading the Billboard chart for four weeks, and going on to sell four million copies in the US alone. The new edition contains session outtakes and unreleased versions of Getting Acquainted and the album staples Please Be With Me and Give Me Strength.

There’s One In Every Crowd, recorded in Kingston, Jamaica at the landmark reggae studio Dynamic Sounds, was created in a break from the triumphant tour that followed the stunning success of 461. This restored edition offers Clapton’s non-album single interpretation of Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door and a selection of session outtakes and unreleased tracks.

That tour would be commemorated by the E.C. Was Here double set, now expanded across two discs with numerous unissued extras such as versions of Layla, Crossroads and Little Wing. That’s followed by the historic sessions at Criteria, where 461 had been made, in the summer of ’74 with Clapton’s hero Freddie King, for King’s Burglar album. Four tracks from those sessions appear here, including a glorious, 22-minute Gambling Woman Blues.

Rarely in rock history has an artist redefined and augmented their creative oeuvre quite as Eric Clapton did during the 1974-75 season. Give Me Strength: The '74/'75 Recordings salutes this watershed era to stunning effect.

The Motown 7s Box - rare and unreleased vinyl gems

Box set: The Motown 7s Box (vinyl)
Release date: 25 November 2013
Label: Universal

UMC are proud to present THE MOTOWN 7s BOX – a collection of 14 rare and previously unreleased on vinyl gems, with all tracks lovingly restored from the original Hitsville master tapes.

Containing 14 rare and previously unreleased tracks, largely never available on vinyl before, demand is expected to outstrip supply for an item that will be treasured by Motown lovers all across the globe.

The compiler - original Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling - has this to say about the forthcoming set: "Of all the many compilation projects I have initiated over the past 30 years, this one gives me more pleasure than any. As these previously unheard Motown delicacies were being found in the vaults over the last decade, they have all made it onto CD, but for collectors like myself, Motown means vinyl, and to be able to hear and see these brilliant recordings spinning around on our turntables now will be fantastic! I've put together the selections with loving attention, aimed to capture the up tempo Northern Soul sounds, and the more delicate late 60s / early 70s crossover sound of Young America that is also so popular. As for the artists, well how could I fail, it was like being a young kid allowed in the candy store...we have the sensual soul of David Ruffin, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops and The Supremes...the dance floor dynamite of The Originals, Chris Clark, The Temptations, the magnificence of The Isley Brothers, and let's not forget that we also have a legal reissue of the £25000 valued Frank Wilson 45, Do I Love You. Also included are in-demanders from Barbara McNair, The Detroit Spinners, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell and Kim Weston. Universal Music have commissioned an authentic 60s feel to present the beautiful box set collection superbly, and as the pressing is limited to only 2200, it will not be around very long and is certain to become a treasured collectors item”.

The Band: Live at The Academy of Music 1971

CD and DVD collection: Live at The Academy of Music 1971 by The Band
Release date: 30 September 2013
Label: Capitol / Universal

During the final week of 1971, The Band played four legendary concerts at New York City’s Academy Of Music, ushering in the New Year with electrifying performances, including new horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint and a surprise guest appearance by Bob Dylan for a New Year’s Eve encore. Select highlights from the concerts were compiled for The Band’s classic 1972 double LP, Rock Of Ages, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and remains a core album in the trailblazing group’s storied Capitol Records catalog. For the first time, all four of the concerts’ multi-track recordings have been revisited for Live At The Academy Of Music 1971, a new 4CD+DVD collection to be released September 17 by Capitol/UMe. The expansive new collection features new stereo and 5.1 Surround mixes, including 19 previously unreleased performances and newly discovered footage of two songs filmed by Howard Alk and Murray Lerner. Live At The Academy Of Music 1971 takes a deep dive into The Band’s historic shows for a definitive document of the pioneering group’s stage prowess at the apex of their career. On the same date, the collection’s first two discs will also be released as a 2CD set.

Live At The Academy Of Music 1971 is presented in a deluxe, 48-page hardbound book with previously unseen photos, a reproduction of Rolling Stone’s original Rock Of Ages review by magazine co-founder Ralph J. Gleason, an essay by The Band’s Robbie Robertson, and appreciations of The Band and the set’s recordings by Mumford & Sons and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. The collection’s first two discs feature performances of every song played over the course of the four concerts, and the New Year’s Eve soundboard mix on discs 3 and 4 puts the listener in the room for that entire legendary night: Uncut, unedited, taken straight from the master recordings and presented in full for the first time. The set’s DVD presents the tracks from discs 1 and 2 in 5.1 Surround, plus Alk and Lerner’s filmed performances of King Harvest (Has Surely Come) and The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show.

Live At The Academy Of Music 1971 is produced by Robbie Robertson, with co-producers Michael Murphy and Matt D’Amico. The stereo mixes for the first two discs and the DVD’s 5.1 Surround mix were done by Bob Clearmountain, with the stereo mixes for discs 3 and 4 helmed by Sebastian Robertson and Jon Castelli, assisted by Ryan Nasci. The collection was mastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering. The concerts were originally recorded by Phil Ramone with Mark Harman.

By the late 1960s, The Band had become one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world. Robertson, reflecting on the time and the decision to record the Academy Of Music concerts, recalls, “We were in a huddle of playing music, enjoying what we were doing, and I had a feeling, ‘We should capture this.’ To end 1971 with these shows felt, for all of us, like the right thing to do. This is a fulfillment of that extraordinary musical experience that I feel great about sharing.”

Of the set’s complete New Year’s Eve recording, Robertson says, “This is like being there.  It was the final night; there was a thrill in the air.  We were excited about New Year’s Eve, and then Dylan joined us for the encore. When he came out, we thought we could wing it, and wing it we did. We thought, ‘We’re not gonna fall off this wire.’  That whole night had a bit of magic to it.”

The Band’s members shared an extensive collaborative history. Between 1960 and 1962, the then-teenaged multi-instrumentalists Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin), Robbie Robertson (guitar, piano, vocals), Rick Danko (bass, vocals, fiddle), Richard Manuel (keyboards, vocals, drums) and Garth Hudson (keyboards, horns) first performed and recorded together as members of the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins called the Hawks. In late 1963, the Hawks struck out on their own and became Levon & the Hawks, playing and recording under this name in 1964 and 1965.

In 1965, Robertson met with Bob Dylan in New York, just as Dylan was seeking an electric guitarist for his touring band. The Band was born, with all of the former Hawks backing Dylan on the road from October 1965 through 1966 as he incensed audiences in the U.S., Australia and Europe, performing electric sets. Disheartened by the vocally disdainful ‘folkie purist’ audience response to their first plugged-in performances with Dylan, Helm left The Band in November 1965.

After the 1966 tour concluded, The Band woodshedded for the next year in upstate New York, often in the company of Dylan, forging a highly original sound that in one way or another encompassed the panoply of American roots music: country, blues, R&B, gospel, soul, rockabilly, the honking tenor sax tradition, Anglican hymns, funeral dirges, brass band music, folk music, modern rock, fused and synthesized in ways that no one had ever before thought possible.

Helm re-joined The Band in 1967, as the group prepared to record their first full-length album.  Released in 1968, Music From Big Pink received glowing reviews; a journalist for Life magazine wrote that The Band “dipped into the well of tradition and came up with a bucketful of clear, cool, country soul that washed the ears with a sound never heard before.”  While the album only reached No. 30 on Billboard’s chart when it was released, it has become recognized over time as one of the most important albums in the history of rock.

Between 1968 and 1978, The Band released nine albums. In 1989, The Band was inducted into the Canadian Juno Hall of Fame; five years later they were accorded the same honor by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2008, The Band was honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sadly, three members of The Band, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Levon Helm, have passed away, but The Band’s legacy lives on, in their recordings and in their tangible influence on popular music since they first hit the scene, wowing not only Bob Dylan, but many other major players of the day, including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Miles Davis. Making Americana music before the term even existed, Rick, Levon, Garth, Richard and Robbie collectively constituted the only ensemble to ever rightfully earn the sobriquet The Band.

Box set release: October 7 2013

It seems almost incomprehensible that it’s now 25 years since Alex Paterson took his first giant steps under the banner of The Orb. Caught in the escalating rush of acid house and armed with dream-realising new technology, Alex, and whoever else was on his flight path at the time, started pumping their inherent sense of mischief into panoramic soundscapes with heavyweight beats, taking the live electronic experience to new levels.

A quarter century later, the world is a much different place after technology progressed further, changing the way music was created and heard as the next century got under way. By then, The Orb had already charted a fearlessly wayward course, while unleashing one of the most uncompromisingly innovative bodies of work of the last century, no sound too extreme or source too cheeky.

This is why we’re gathered here today - to mark The Orb’s Silver Jubilee with a collection of landmarks from their first two decades, plus a bunch of extra treats. When Alex took those first, tentative steps 25 years ago he was in the throes of the second revolution to erupt in his life after punk‘s big bang. Acid house opened up a new form of anarchy, using machines before they were changed to protect the innocent. There was always attitude in the Orb’s ambience, as Alex declared more than once, “we’ve got the same attitude as punk rock.”

After Alex and first Orb partner Jimmy Cauty’s initial dalliances in Cornwall, the first major statement under The Orb name was 1989’s A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Universe, among early releases on Alex and Youth’s W.A.U. Mr Modo label.

Tellingly, this set starts with a high definition declaration of dance floor domination with the thunderous Orbital Dance Mix of the track which appeared on July, 1990’s A Huge Ever Growing Remix EP.

This key track in Orb lore appears here in three different incarnations, also including 1991’s Aubrey Mix Mk II ambient version from 1991’s Aubrey Mixes: The Ultra World Excursions, with crashing waves and clucking chickens lashing the pivotal melody.  The live version shows how the track could also be cranked into the ultimate, all-going-off set closer. When it provided their 20 minute Peel session in December, 1989, it became the most requested in the show’s history.

The follow-up, Little Fluffy Clouds, (which started life in Alex’s bedroom at the infamous Coach House he was then sharing with Youth), was created at that magical time when sampling technology offered new oceans of possibilities (which turned into a Pandora‘s Box of litigation as claims rained in after these first innocent flurries of exploration).

1990’s Little Fluffy Clouds kicked off with English country narrative from Face The Facts presenter John Waite before the famous Rickie Lee Jones promo interview snippet which came with her Flying Cowboys album. Demonstrating the unlikely sources which separated the genuinely creative from mindless plagiarism, the beats hail from a Harry Nilsson track, introduced by Ennio Morricone harmonica. Coldcut, who’d been developing their own strain of underground sonic science, are here with their aptly-titled Heavyweight Dub Mix.

Next single from 1991’s Adventures Beyond The Ultra World was psychedelic reggae outing Perpetual Dawn, here heard in its Solar Youth version and the first of Andrew Weatherall’s cataclysmic pair of Ultrabass remixes, underpinned by Jah Wobble‘s chest-rattling bass.

Blue Room itself is a stratospheric epic with long-time mucker Steve Hillage's ether-surfing guitar, Miquette Giraudy's ghostly synths plus sirens, NASA astronauts and disemboided vocal, again underpinned by Jah Wobble's inimitable Earth's core-shaking basslines.

Clocking in at a second below the 40 minute limit imposed by chart compilers Gallop, Blue Room was released as a twelve-inch single on June 8, reaching number eight as the  longest single to make the charts. It’s here in three versions - the single edit, live and Excerpt 605 on the rarities disc.

U.F. Orb was unveiled to the media at London's Planetarium. It came as a shocked but air-punching triumph when the album invaded the charts at number one. It continues its mighty presence on this collection with Majestic and Close Encounters appearing in disc two’s remixes.

Close Encounters showed how The Orb could deliver floor-destroying techno, working with Glasgow titans Stuart MacMillan and Orde Meikle, aka Slam, who‘d recently started their Soma label while running the raging inferno of their Slam club. If the original version was dominated by the astonishingly crowd-levitating groove, disc two’s ambient version brings out myriad other subtleties.

Disc three captures the sonic splendour of the live Orb show around this time, drawn from Trekkoner, Copenhagen and Woodstock 2 in 1993-94, hotwiring singles and album highlights with the spontaneous combustion of the duo‘s live mixing, which meant every gig was different. They were also playing a song called Assassin - 1992’s next single. Originally a fluid slab of astral funk draped in radioactive sonic worms, it became a prime example of an Orb piece spreading its wings live in various directions, appearing here as single edit and in two different live incarnations.

1993 saw angry grey streaks appearing in the little fluffy clouds, manifesting as the dark side of The Orb in mid-1994’s abrasive Pomme Fritz (The Orb’s Little Album), fired by rekindled punk spirit with anger often the energy.

Released in July 1994, Pomme Fritz sparked hostility everywhere from record company to press, although it still made number six in the UK charts (though not this set!).

With slate wiped clean, The Orb could move on and make their under-rated masterpiece Orbus Terrarum. This  double-album epic of astonishing complexity, breadth and depth continued Alex’s exploring of a, “collage of noises that had never been heard before in that sort of music”, venturing into avant garde, musique concrete and classical realms, shot with the wildest dub.

With bassist Simon Phillips and percussionist Nick Burton also still around, The Orb set off on the album’s orchestral dub voyages, including the supremely evocative Oxbow Lakes, here in its album version.

Alex could now reflect on “two years of pretty hard labour” which had seen everything change, including record company, management and musical collaborators. There was still pressure to set their controls for the heart of the charts as Orbus Terrarum had just scraped the top 20 while there hadn’t been a huge single, so it came as another surprise when Toxygene reached number four in the singles chart in February, 1997; The Orb’s highest placed single yet. As a result, mothership album Orblivion sold well too.

The hit came with a beautiful slice of Orb-lore. During the ‘90s, The Orb trotted out remixes for a galaxy of artists, from Primal Scream to Robbie Williams, even a U2 knock-back, as Alex stuck to his motto, “you get an Orb track with bits of song on it.” Jean Michel Jarre’s 1977 hit Oxygene was a hugely-influential electronic landmark. To celebrate its 20 year anniversary, the French composer had created a sequel called Oxygene 7-13, The Orb were called to remix Oxygene 8. The composer was not too pleased remarking, “It’s not that I didn’t like it, but I wanted the first wave of remixes to be linked with Oxygene’s theme and textures.’ Alex simply took his remix, retitled it Toxygene (after being out-voted on ‘Toxic Genes’) and released it as first single from the album it had just found a home in, a hit in its own right. The single was released in a pink box containing two CDs with mixes inclusing Ganja Kru’s drum ’n’ bass workout (included here).

Orblivion featured a more streamlined Orb with Alex, Thomas and Andy, plus Steve Hillage, Miquette Girady and tour DJ Lewis Keogh. The object of the exercise this time seems to be how much fun they can have bending melodies and beats into new dimensions. After the ambient exploits of the previous two albums, the vibe around Orblivion was that The Orb were back in a funky mood, without trying to lead or start new trends because they’d already done that.

Next single was Asylum, a pulsing electro beast co-written with tour DJ Lewis Keogh, riding a gently squelching riff draped in lazy steel guitar and Detroit techno melody. The track is here in its album version.

After the unfettered creativity of the Orblivion phase and top five success of the single, darker clouds were again gathering again towards the end of the century. Although recorded through 1999, the delightfully multi-hued Cydonia got caught up in internal record label reshufflings, meaning it wasn’t released until 2000. Named after the area of Mars where the Viking space craft photographed a Sphinx-like face, Cydonia remains one of the most diverse and overlooked items in the Orb arsenal.

The core team of Alex, Andy Hughes, Thomas Fehlmann, Simon Phillips and Nick Burton was joined by Fil de Gonidec (another old Killing Joke mucker), Sabrettes’ Nina Walsh and Freaky Realistic singer Aki Omori, who unleashed her sepulchral vocals on a traditional Vietnamese melody for first single, Once More.

Meanwhile, Nina co-wrote and sang some of Alex‘s old lyrics on second single Ghostdancing, whose lustrous, hallucino-sheened future pop inevitably incurred flak for daring to venture near traditional song forms. This was easily dismissed by Alex: “This may be but they were ORB pop songs,“ while adding that, “Ghostdancing is probably one of the best Orb tunes we’ve ever done.” Disc two features the spectral textures of Mark Pritchard’s sumptuously deep remix.

There we have it: all aspects of The Orb in one boxset: the singles which took them to mass success, remixes which kept the underground happy, the kind of live show which blazed a trail for others to take dance music to the stadiums, plus some of the amazing videos which accompanied most of the singles assembled here.

The Smashing Pumpkins reissue their platinum selling box set, 'The Aeroplane Flies High'

Box set release: The Aeroplane Flies High by The Smashing Pumpkins
Release date: 23 July 2013
Label: Virgin / UMe

As part of the continuing series of reissues of The Smashing Pumpkins' acclaimed catalog via Virgin/UMe, the iconic alternative band is set to release four separate versions, all fully remastered, of their platinum-selling 1996 box set The Aeroplane Flies High: 6-CD +1 DVD; 5-LPs; and Deluxe Digital and Standard Digital editions. The CD/DVD, 5-LP version and digital configurations will be released on July 23.

The original The Aeroplane Flies high was a five-disc box set that featured expanded versions of singles from their acclaimed 1995 double album Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness, including Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Zero, Tonight and Thirty-Three. Mellon Collie achieved Diamond certification by the RIAA for sales of 10,000,000 discs and digital equivalent per disc (5 million copies of the double album).

These new limited edition box sets of The Aeroplane Flies High feature the original 33 track version—remastered by Bob Ludwig—and expanded to 104 tracks (90 audio and 14 audio-visual) encompassing unreleased demos, alternative versions and live recordings. In addition to expanded versions of Aeroplane’s original 5 discs, a 6th disc contains live recordings from the 1996 Mellon Collie tour, while the DVD content is taken from a July 4 1997 performance in Belfort, France. Included is a 46-page book with liner notes written by David Wild, plus extensive track-by-track notes by The Smashing Pumpkins' founder-singer-songwriter-guitarist Billy Corgan for the original release’s 33 tracks. The box set has unique packaging with embossed foil wrap and twinkle stock for jackets. You can view the full tracklisting of each box set and DVD here.

As David Wild writes, “The Aeroplane Flies High is a trip, and perhaps fittingly for Billy Corgan, it was an exciting, exhausting and scary one that reveals a lot about the Smashing Pumpkins at this point in their musical journey.”

Notes Corgan in the 46-page book: “What I like about The Aeroplane Flies High is that it’s almost the existential backwater of the Mellon Collie album. Listening to the music gathered here is a little bit like seeing what goes on behind the walls of Disneyland. I’ve always been fascinated with places that are very well constructed, and finding out what’s really going on just over the fence. You look over that gate and notice that things on the other side are not well painted — or maybe you spot that guy dressed as some character sneaking a smoke on his break.  At least for me, the behind the scenes feel heard on The Aeroplane Flies High represents something revealing not found on the main album. In retrospect, it’s a nice document of how we arrived at the apex of Mellon Collie — and also what standing on that apex did to us personally.”

The Aeroplane Flies High follows 2011’s acclaimed reissues of the band’s groundbreaking first two albums, Gish (1991) and Siamese Dream (1993), as well as 2012’s Pisces Iscariot (1994), the band’s third album, as well as their fourth album, Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness (1995).

As The Smashing Pumpkins get the fully remastered treatment via these reissues, the band is excited to be moving forward by creating new music. They will soon start recording the follow-up to 2012’s acclaimed album Oceania (Martha’s Music / EMI Label Services / Caroline Distribution). It was created by the band — singer/guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist Jeff Schroeder, drummer Mike Byrne and bassist Nicole Fiorentino — at Corgan’s private studio in Chicago as a true album experience for listeners to fully immerse themselves in. It entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at No. 4 and earned the No. 1 spot on the Independent Albums Chart.  Marking the band's 7th studio record, it is “an album within an album,” part of their 44-song work-in-progress Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.  The band launched their 2013 world tour in Mexico this past March and is heading to Europe and Japan for summer dates through August 11.

The Style Council - 'Classic Album Selection' released by Universal

Album reissues: Classic Album Selection by The Style Council
Release date: 15 July 2013
Label: Universal

Tired of the constraints of the Jam, Paul Weller shocked fans and the wider media world and broke up the most popular British band of the early '80s at the height of their success in 1982.  Frustrated by The Jam’s musical direction, he wanted to explore more soulful, jazz and R’n’B paths in his music. He formed a new band with keyboardist Mick Talbot and created a loose collective of musicians, added according to the style of music they were intending to produce, known as Honorary Councillors. Using American musical influences filtered through a fundamental European style, which harked back to some of the early roots of Mod culture, the band created a string of classic singles and albums.

2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the formation of the band and their first hit singles. This 6-album set features all the band’s studio albums as follows:

Introducing The Style Council

  • An extraordinary eclectic intro to the band - a round up of the first few British singles and b-sides.
  • Features the Jam-styled Speak Like a Child (UK no. 4 hit), the radical departure of Long Hot Summer (UK no. 3 hit) and the hard-hitting political Brit-funk of Money-Go-Round.

Cafe Bleu

  • The official debut album released in March 1984, reaching number 2 in the UK album chart.
  • An eclectic and ambitious album combining classic pop with jazzy/beat instrumentals and experimental theme throughout. Blue Note records were a big inspiration around this time.
  • Features top-5 hits My Ever Changing Moods and You’re The Best Thing as well as perennial favourite – Headstart For Happiness - three of Weller’s finest pop songs.

Our Favourite Shop

  • Another diverse collection for the second full-length album and an overtly political statement from Weller - lyrical targets included racism, excessive consumerism and the effects of self-serving governments!
  • No. 1 in the UK - the only Style Council album to reach that spot.
  • Features the top-ten singles – Shout To The Top and Walls Come Tumbling Down, as well as some of Weller’s best songs - Come to Milton Keynes, Boy Who Cried Wolf and Down in the Seine.
  • “I had a total belief in The Style Council. I was obsessed in the early years. I lived and breathed it all. I meant every word, and felt every action. Our Favourite Shop was its culmination.”  Paul Weller 2006

The Cost Of Loving

  • Released in 1987, the album saw the group concentrating on a more extreme, urban-soul style, influenced by soul music pioneer Curtis Mayfield and by the contemporary House music scene of the time, including the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis sound.
  • Includes top-ten hit It Didn’t Matter.
  • Tracks from the album were included in the band’s surreal film Jerusalem.

Confessions Of A Pop Group

  • Probably the band’s most experimental and divisive album, with hints of Beach Boys, classical music (Weller was listening Debussy and Satie, amongst others around this time) and jazz influences.
  • Songs such as the nine-minute title track and the ‘Three Piece Suite’ of The Gardener of Eden, an avant-garde mix of classical and jazz stylings, were new territory for The Style Council, and an even more radical departure from the sound of The Jam.
  • Straight pop-oriented songs exist though – the hit single Life at a Top People's Health Farm, How She Threw It All Away and Why I Went Missing are regarded as lost Weller classics.

Modernism: A New Decade

  • Motivated by the underground club scene Weller chose another new direction for the last album – his take on the UK deep-house or garage scene.
  • Featuring the gospel-tinged Promised Land - the band's final single, Sure Is Sure, which went on to become a big bootleg dance hit throughout Europe and the instrumental - That Spiritual Feeling - one of the key cuts of the then-new acid jazz scene.
  • However upon its completion in 1989, it was rejected by the label Polydor, which led to the band breaking up. It was eventually released in 1998 on the box set, The Complete Adventures of The Style Council.

New box set from Universal - Scott Walker: The Collection 1967-1970

Box set: Scott Walker - The Collection 1967-1970
Release date: Universal
Label: June 3rd 2013

Together for the first time, Scott Walker’s first five solo albums on vinyl and CD. Cut and mastered from the original tapes and presented with their original artwork, The Collection showcases Scott’s self-written material alongside his much-documented interpretations of composers such as Jacques Brel.

The five albums brought together here, released by Scott Walker between 1967 and 1970 are: Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3, Scott 4 and 'Til The Band Comes In. One of the most unique and intriguing artists to emerge in the 60s, these albums are essential to understanding the compelling and fascinating artistry of Scott Walker.

The CD set comes in a hardback, lift-off lid, box-set, each CD recreating the original album artwork and with new, extensive sleeve notes on each album plus rare photos. The comprehensive 16 page booklet is written by Rob Young who edited last year’s compendium No Regrets: Writings on Scott Walker.

The deluxe 5-LP box set features the original album artwork and includes an 11-inch print replicated from Scott 2, plus a 48-page booklet containing Rob Young’s essay. All five LPs come in 180gm heavyweight vinyl. Scott 3 and Scott 4 are reproduced in the original gatefold jackets. In addition there are four interviews courtesy of Rock's Back Pages: Keith Altham – Scott Walker Hides Away In a Gloom World, NME 1970; Chris Welch – Scott: I’m Going to Japan By Train, Melody Maker, 18 May 1968; Keith Altham – Scott Walker: His Own Worst Enemy, NME, 1969 and Chris Welch – Scott Walker Comes In From The Cold, Melody Maker, 1970.

Scott Walker’s first solo album, simply titled Scott, released in September 1967, appeared before The Walkers Brothers’ final official concert (at least until their subsequent mid-seventies reunion).  As with all the albums in this collection, it has to be seen in a context of Walker wanting to escape the pop stardom of The Walker Brothers where his moody reclusiveness was in sharp contradiction to their teen-idol success. The group’s final album, Images (April 1967) had featured three compositions credited to Scott Engel alone, and it was clear his ambitions lay in this direction: as a composer as well as vocalist.

As Rob Young observes in his accompanying notes, Scott “saw him attempting to let go of the schmaltzy ‘big sound’ of The Walkers; Scott would turn out to be a curious, occasionally uncomfortable marriage of three distinct modes: the middle-of-the-road covers made popular by the likes of Tony Bennett, Tim Hardin, Frank Sinatra and Petula Clark; the very different-styled arrangements of Jacques Brel songs; and Walker’s own compositions. It’s the weird chemistry between these approaches that makes Scott – and all four solo albums that followed – such beautifully unsettling experiences.”

On the strength of the Walker Brothers dedicated fan base, Scott charted at number 3, Scott 2 would actually reach number 1 and Scott 3 was another number chart entry. The same eclectic mix of covers and original compositions provided the direction for Scott 2, released March 1968, which opened with Brel’s swaggering Jackie. The song’s reference to ‘opium dens, authentic queers and phoney virgins’ earned Walker a controversial ban from daytime BBC broadcasts, and scheduled TV spots were cancelled. Released as a single, Jackie peaked at 22. He would have two further hits – Joanna and The Lights of Cincinnati, his final chart single in July 1969; neither was included on any album and it was clear Walker preferred to distinguish these more commercial offerings from his more ‘serious’ works.

When discussing the music on Scott 3, released in March 1969, Scott Walker referred critics to grand symphonic works by Beethoven, Brahms and Shostakovich. This was, indeed, serious business from an artist who, in the same month, fronted his own six-part BBC television series, titled simply Scott.

Scott 4, November 1969, did not include the name ‘Scott Walker’ on its sleeve, and the LP label credited the songs to ‘Scott Engel’. It was the only time he used that name professionally, on the first record to be entirely filled with his own compositions (there wouldn’t be another such until 1995). Scott 4’s failure to chart is partly explained by the release just a few months earlier of Sings Songs From His TV Series which reached No. 7 in July 69. The contradictions between Walker the serious artist/songwriter and the more mainstream singer of MOR songs still persisted and continued to haunt him.

Scott Walker’s fifth album, released in 1970, abandoned numerical titling and was named after one of the featured songs, ’Til The Band Comes In. It has since slipped under the critical radar, largely because five of the fifteen tracks are Vegas-friendly, country-tinged covers. The time is now ripe for its reappraisal; Walker’s own writing, the first ten songs on the album, form a kind of Scott 5 in all but name and it’s probably no accident that the covers were held back until the end.

’Til the Band’s uneven mix of originals and covers points directly to what happened next for Scott Walker. As he entered the 1970s, he seemed to lose control of his career direction; two albums of covers followed in the early 70s - The Moviegoer and Any Day Now, then two country-tinged collections in 1974 – Stretch and We Had it All, which saw Walker’s MOR sensibilities come to the fore.  This culminated in the unexpected revival of The Walker Brothers, which began with 1975’s No Regrets. The three year reunion did, however, lead to the masterstroke of Scott’s four tracks on the Walker Brothers’ subsequent (and this time final) album, Nite Flights. These tracks effectively ushered in a whole new phase of uncompromising creativity, enhanced by another solo album, Climate of Hunter in 1984. This, in turn, pointed the way forward to the more challenging direction Scott Walker would adopt in the 1990s and continue into the twenty-first century, on records like Tilt, The Drift and Bish Bosch.

Walker remains as fascinating and compelling an artist today as he was in 1967 when this classic cycle of albums was initiated. He has influenced every generation since kick-started in the 80s by Julian Cope (who compiled an album under the title The Godlike Genius of Scott Walker) and Marc Almond. You can hear the influence of Scott Walker’s in present day bands such as the Last Shadow Puppets and Elbow.

Legendary, but never-before-released Rolling Stones film is made available

Box set release (Blu-ray / DVD / CD): Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 by The Rolling Stones
Release date: 5 November 2012
Label: ABKCO/Universal

ABKCO Films/Universal Music Catalogue are proud to join in the celebration of the Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary by announcing exclusive details of the release of the legendary, but never before officially released film, The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965. The film marked the cinematic debut of the band, and will be released in Super Deluxe Box Set, Blu-ray and DVD configurations worldwide on November 5.

The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 was shot on a quick weekend tour of Ireland just weeks after (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction hit #1 in the charts and became the international anthem for an entire generation. Charlie is my Darling is an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the young Rolling Stones, featuring the first professionally filmed concert performances of the band’s long and storied touring career, documenting the early frenzy of their fans and the riots their live performances incited.

Charlie is my Darling - Ireland 1965 showcases dramatic concert footage – including electrifying performances of The Last Time, Time Is On My Side and the first ever concert performance of the Stones counterculture classic, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. Candid, off-the-cuff interviews are juxtaposed with revealing, comical scenes of the band goofing around with each other. It’s also an insider’s glimpse into the band’s developing musical style blending blues, R&B and rock-n-roll riffs, and the film captures the spark about to combust into The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.

The film was produced by Stones’ manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham who enlisted director Peter Whitehead to travel with the group and film them as (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction rocketed the band to the pinnacle of the U.S. and U.K. charts. Whitehead, who would later capture “swinging London” in Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London, crafted a 35-minute version of the film (director’s cut) that would surface, from time to time over the years, usually seen with grainy visuals and out of phase music. Later, Oldham put together a 50-minute producer’s cut that was first seen in the 1980s. As noted, both the director’s and producer’s cut are part of the DVD, Blu-ray and Super Deluxe Charlie is my Darling release.

The GRAMMY® winning team of producer Robin Klein and director Mick Gochanaur developed the new 65 minute version after researching and locating additional film footage shot by Whitehead and uncovering a source of first generation audio recordings of the band’s concert performances. Painstaking work was done on restoring the footage to come up with the new film that offers a coherent narrative and gives the viewer unprecedented access to the Rolling Stones’ original line-up – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones and Bill Wyman – on stage live and captured, literally, in trains, planes and automobiles as well as backstage and in smoky hotel rooms where they candidly discuss their future. Never-before-seen footage of the band’s early songwriting process is also included as motel rooms host impromptu songwriting sessions and familiar classics are heard in their infancy as riff and lyric are united.

The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 Super Deluxe Box Set  includes both DVD and Blu-ray discs that incorporate the new 2012 version of the film as well as the director’s cut and producer’s cut, plus significant unseen additional performance and other footage shot in Dublin and Belfast in September of 1965, bonus content. The set also includes two audio CDs, one of which is the film’s soundtrack album and the other a compilation of 13 live recordings the band made over the course of their 1965 UK tour.  A 10” vinyl record of the live material is also part of the package, as well as a replica poster heralding the September 4, 1965 date they played in Belfast. The Super Deluxe box is housed in an ingeniously designed luxurious “soft touch” package, each featuring one of over 200 Limited Edition numbered and enlarged cells randomly inserted from the film. There is also a stunning 42 page Collector’s Edition hardcover book that includes 14 never before seen, and painstakingly restored exclusive photographs, including the key art, of the band from the Irish Photo Archive/Lensmen Photo Archive as well as colour photos taken by Marc Sharatt, the Stones’ tour photographer. Reprints of vintage newspaper and magazine articles from the UK and Irish press that offer accounts of the dates and attendant mayhem are included as are essays from American rock journalist and Rolling Stone Magazine staffer David Fricke and GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winning Irish singer/songwriter/actor Glen Hansard. A featured recollection from Reverend Donor Macneice, who was recently located living in Thailand and whose attendance at the ’65 Belfast show nearly cost him his job after he was spotted on the local news is also part of the package.

Both individual Blu-ray and DVD editions of the package mirror the discs featured in the Super Deluxe Box comprising the 2012 version, the director’s cut and the producer’s cut. Simultaneously, there will also be a digital-only release of the 2012 edition of The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965.

The world premiere of The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling – Ireland 1965 will take place this Friday, September 29 at the 50th New York Film Festival with Andrew Loog Oldham in attendance.

November 2012 broadcast premieres are being scheduled for the US and the UK, as well as worldwide theatrical screenings.

To mark the 40th anniversary of their formation in Stockport in 1972, Universal Music will release a five-disc box set, Tenology, by era-defining pop maestros 10cc on 19th November 2012.  Curated by the four original members – Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart, >Tenology features four CDs (two discs of singles, one of selected album tracks, and a further one of B-sides and rarities) and a DVD (featuring all the groundbreaking promo videos and TV performances on Top Of The Pops, BBC In Concert, See You Sunday, Six Fifty Five Special and Pebble Mill).

The packaging for Tenology has been exclusively designed  with input from the four original 10cc members – by legendary British graphic designer Storm Thorgerson, who, as part of Hipgnosis, worked extensively with the band in the 70s and later designed the band’s ’95 album Mirror Mirror. The set also contains a 8500 word essay by Guardian writer and lifelong fan, Paul Lester, and features new interviews.
