Dreyfus Jazz Reference 14 albums out 30 November 2018

Dreyfus-Jazz.jpg

Album release: Dreyfus 'Jazz Reference'
Release date: 30 November 2018
Label: Sony BMG

  • Reissue of 14 titles from 'Jazz Reference' collection

  • Available for the first time on vinyl (and CD) with new artwork by Seb Jarnot

  • Digital promo copies and very limited physical copies available upon request

The 'Jazz Reference' series was originally created by Francis Dreyfus at the very start of the 21st century. This incredible catalogue regrouped the biggest names in Jazz at a groundbreaking sound quality.

Almost twenty years later it is still perceived as one of the best ever created. To help a new generation rediscover this amazing collection, BMG is releasing a first selection of 14 titles: from Louis Armstrong’s trumpet or Django Reinhardt’s guitar to the voices of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, only the very best has been kept.

Now, this collection will available for the first time on vinyl, and all formats display a brand new artwork from Seb Jarnot, exclusively created for this special reissue.

Speaking about the collection on it's original release, the late Francis Dreyfus, said:

"Since my early childhood, I’ve been crazy about Jazz. This childhood fascination is what inspired me to create Dreyfus Jazz.

I am releasing these masterpieces in order to discover, through another perspective, a collection of the most beautiful tracks ever recorded before 1960 by the biggest and most renowned creators of the lively and flawless language of jazz.

Who is this anthology for?

It’s for those who already love Jazz, and for those who will find great pleasure in re-discovering it, thanks to the sound quality that is unexpected and unequaled. It’s also for the younger generation who don’t yet realize that they are going to love this music that burnt down from its creative violence and its jubilant swing throughout the entire twentieth century.

First, I had to achieve the near impossible: “Break the wall of sound” in order to enhance the already sublime tracks of yesterday… to make them sound as though they’d been recorded yesterday. Thanks to technological information storage and the resolute research of exceptional sound engineer René Ameline (with never ending passion and patience) it was possible to give a “new youth” to the voice of Ella and Billie, and to offer an unheard freshness to formidable improvisations by Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins. We have included the best sources, the best songs, the best documents and there were no “second takes” or “false starts”.

I wanted to start from the original signals inscribed deeply in the wax, to enlarge and enrich the entire sound spectrum until it was inaudible and mute. It was necessary to carefully clean each chosen song, meaning that every useless scratch and annoying click had to be wiped, whilst avoiding stripping away the original grainy sound. With this we were able to achieve a more spacious sound, offering more depth and fullness compared to the original 78 record collection. The result is spectacular!

This collection is truly unique. From the will of a passionate perfectionist who manifested its conception like bearing a child, it was championed by a team of specialists who are lovers of jazz in all its dimensions: Claude Carrière, Noël Hervé and Daniel Nevers.

To really define the spirit of this adventure, which has lasted almost two years, I cannot think of a better way to conclude but to quote Claude Debussy: “Finally, a savage music with modern comfort”!"

Full list of 14 titles:

  • Billy Holiday – You Go To My Head

  • Charlie Parker – Now’s The Time

Bob Marley 'Kaya' anniversary edition out 24 August 2018

ZUPDATE_Kaya_Article_900x555-900x500.jpg

Album reissue: 'Kaya' by Bob Marley
Release date: 24 August 2018
Label: The Marley Family/Island Records/UMC
More info: Band website

On the 24th of August, The Marley Family, Island Records, and UMC will collectively proclaim the sun is shining in celebration of 40 years of Kaya, Bob Marley & The Wailers’ historic March 1978 release. The album's themes of love and peace have resonated across the world and the record reached the top 5 in the UK albums chart upon original release.

This most special anniversary edition will feature Stephen “Ragga” Marley’s exciting and vibrant new 'Kaya 40' mixes of all ten tracks from the original album alongside its original mixes in 2CD and 180-gram 2LP configurations. (The digital version will be a standalone release of Stephen’s mixes only.) The album will also be available as a limited edition 180-gram 2LP green vinyl version exclusively here.

Listen to the new mix of 'Is This Love' here.

Recorded in London concurrently with the material that ultimately comprised 1977’s Exodus — a record proclaimed by Time Magazine in 1999 to be the Best Album of the 20th Century — Kaya is the perfect sonic-sibling bookend that shares all the joy, spirit, and literal DNA of some of Marley’s most ground-breaking material. Kaya contains a number of the most enduring, heartfelt songs in the entire Marley canon, including 'Is This Love', 'Easy Skanking', and 'Sun Is Shining'.

'Kaya' was initially released just one month ahead of Bob Marley & The Wailers headlining the legendary One Love Peace Concert at The National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on 22nd April 1978, an event that featured 16 of reggae’s biggest acts. One Love Peace was heralded as Marley’s triumphant return to his native soil, following his long exile in London after having fled the country as a result of a December 1976 assassination attempt at his Kingston homestead.

The album was recorded with the then-new configuration of The Wailers that comprised brothers Carlton and Aston 'Family Man' Barrett on drums and bass, Tyrone Downie on keyboards, Alvin 'Seeco' Patterson on percussion, and the I Threes — Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, and Judy Mowatt — on backing vocals, along with newest member Julian (Junior) Marvin on guitar. Two of Kaya’s songs had previously appeared in different arrangements on 1971’s Soul Revolution — the title track, and 'Sun Is Shining'.

Stephen's goal in mixing 'Kaya 40' was to create a balance that drew heavily from the original versions. Using Bob’s vocals from demos from original 'Kaya' sessions that were recorded at different tempos, Stephen synched the vocals with alternate takes and layered it over different instrumental arrangements.  Stephen tried to keep the flavor as authentic as possible. To mix the album, he used a similar minimal approach, basing his version heavily off the classic analog concepts they used in the 1970s.

Bob Marley’s artistic legacy forever endures, and the 40th anniversary edition of 'Kaya' only serves to reinforce just how much we all share the shelter of this special music.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album reissue due 25 May 2018

CYHSY-hi-res2-2017 - Credit to Michael Regan_preview.jpeg

Album reissue: 'Some Loud Thunder' by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Release date: 25 May 2018
More info: Band website

Clap Your Hand Say Yeah’s landmark second album 'Some Loud Thunder' will be reissued with exclusive bonus tracks on May 25th to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its original release. The band will be playing select tour dates in North America, UK and Europe where they’ll perform the album in its entirety. 'Some Loud Thunder' has been remastered by TW Walsh and will be available on vinyl for the first time in several years.

A few words about the album from CYHSY’s Alec Ounsworth.

"Let me explain. Some Loud Thunder was an album written mostly as a reaction to the not unwelcome but still uncomfortable great interest in the band’s first album, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.  Depending on who you asked, in 2007 the band was known alternatively as the “real thing” or a flash in the pan, a band who presented a new paradigm for independent music or whose model was based on sheer luck, a band simply enjoying the process of creation or a (relatively) new band struggling to maintain some sort of illusory artistic foothold.

The general desire to discover the “secret” behind the project (and the irritation that it caused me in interviews, reviews, etc.) was, to a large degree, what drove the creation of the album, Some Loud Thunder. Mostly, this is evidenced in the songs, Some Loud Thunder (“Yes, that was me breaking glass and pretending to start something big, some new taste”) and Satan Said Dance (“Satan” here as the transitory faction of an audience which tends to disappear as soon as any chances are taken), but in others as well.

I think that this album, from the abrasive first track (which was not as much of a fuck you as some think but rather that it simply worked) to the final disintegrating “give up give up give up give up give up” on the song, “Five Easy Pieces,” documents a band that was comfortable taking big chances, somewhat aware of the consequences of taking chances (in an industry that often seems allergic to veering off the beaten path) but ignoring them all the same.  For this, maybe most of all, I am very proud of this album.  For true fans, who allow the opportunity to take such chances and are not afraid to embrace what may at first seem difficult or different, I am eternally grateful. Thanks, Alec"

Sorority Noise hiatus and album reissue due 30 March 2018

sorority-noise.jpg

Album release: 'You're Not As ____ As You Think' by Sorority Noise
Release date: 30 March 2018
Label:  Big Scary Monsters
More info: Band website

Sorority Noise have announced a stripped down re-imagining of their 2017 critically acclaimed album 'You're Not As ____ As You Think'. YNAAYT is available for digital purchase now, and is set to be released physically on March 30th via Big Scary Monsters. Hear the Leonard Cohen cover 'Chelsea Hotel No.2'.

The band also announced, on Friday night, their decision to take a hiatus via the band's Facebook page.

Sorority Noise head to the UK for dates supporting The Wonder Years in April.

Sorority Noise write important songs. They go to uncomfortable places, unafraid to let the darkness in – but they’re also not shy at kicking back until the sorrow subsides. They’re songs of confusion, anger, life, death, mental health and, most importantly, hope. They’re what it means to be human.

That vulnerability has been Sorority Noise’s hallmark since they formed in 2013, but it’s never been as precise as it is on 'You're Not As _____ As You Think', their third album, set for release March 17th via Big Scary Monsters. The album follows the Connecticut-based quartet’s 'It Kindly Stopped For Me' 7” (2016), critically acclaimed 'Joy, Departed' (2015) and debut 'Forgettable' (2014) and is the most collaborative, fully realised version of Sorority Noise to date.

Sorority Noise recorded 'You’re Not As _____ As You Think' with producer Mike Sapone (Brand New, Taking Back Sunday) over the span of 10 days – three times longer than it took to track 'Joy, Departed' – and this increased time allowed the band to hone the songwriting and visceral performances that have launched them onto tours with Modern Baseball, Citizen, Turnover and The Menzingers and into outlets like Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, The Fader, Spin, AV Club and Stereogum.

Singer/guitarist Cameron Boucher, who prefers not to edit or overthink his lyrics, empties both his pen and soul on songs like 'No Halo', 'Disappeared' and 'A Portrait Of',' stark vignettes that find him coming to terms with the death of close friends. He’s had days, weeks and months to confront these and other emotions, and when it came time to write about them, the words spilled out.

So what you’re getting is an emotional bulldozer – an unfiltered, inward look at the last year of the band’s life that’s filled with intimate, visceral details yet remains universally relatable. But even amidst heavy subject matter, Sorority Noise want to give you a sense of resilience. “No matter what I feel, it’s going to be OK,” Boucher says. “Things are going to be tough, but it’s going to be fine in the end – and you have to keep going because you just have to. This is how it’s going to be. You’ve just got to do it.”

It’s in this way that the album’s title comes into view, and it only takes inserting a few adjectives – sad, happy, rich, poor – to realise life is all about perspective. Hardships are inevitable, but so is hope. Rather than living in the shadows, Sorority Noise have learned the only way to move past the struggle is by never stopping moving forward into the sun.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs vinyl reissue out 20 October 2017

YEAH YEAH YEAHS.jpg

Album release: 'Fever To Tell' by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Release date: 20 October 2017
Label: Interscope Records / UMe
More info: Band website

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have announced details of a vinyl reissue of their seminal, ground-breaking debut, 'Fever To Tell', on October 20th through Interscope Records / UMe. The album will be available as a Limited Edition Deluxe Box, Standard LP, and Digital deluxe and standard re-mastered editions. Pre-Order for all editions from Sept 26th, with release on October 20th. 'Shake It', a previously unreleased track from the Fever To Tell era, is available as an instant grat now via all digital formats.

Speaking about the release, the New York trio said, “A friend of a friend kept asking if we were ever gonna put Fever To Tell out on vinyl as it hasn’t been on vinyl in 10 years. That’s not right. So here it is on vinyl for the first time in 10 years plus a time capsule of photos, demos (1st ever recorded,) a mini film documenting our near downfall and other fun memorabilia, from the turn of the century NYC, made with love + the usual blood, sweat + tears of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.”

One of the finest debut albums of recent times, Fever To Tell was released in 2003 and was influential in shaping the sound of the early aughts and beyond. Prior to its release, Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase had already established themselves as a ferocious live force; 'Fever To Tell' introduced a band who could play thrilling and frenetic rock’n’roll one minute and captivating, hushed ballads the next. Its meld of scuzzy riffs, angular grooves and hypnotic hooks set a template that was often imitated over the next decade but the album’s rare chemistry isn’t easily replicated. It’s a snapshot of an era that sounds just as mesmerizing as it enters its 15th anniversary in 2018.

In celebration of and in addition to the reissue, the band has announced shows in Los Angeles (The Fonda Theatre, October 25) and Brooklyn (Kings Theatre, November 7).  These two exclusive underplays join the two previously announced 2017 festival appearances.  Tickets for Los Angeles and Brooklyn dates go on pre sale with the vinyl pre order September 26th, and general on-sale September 29th.

'Fever To Tell' will be released on two physical formats:

The Deluxe Box will be signed and numbered and limited to 2,000 copies worldwide. It contains the original album newly remastered on 2LPs, with nine unreleased demos, eight B-sides and rarities, and five newspaper lyric posters. It also comes with a 164-page hardbound photo book of Nick Zinner’s personal photos and includes pages from Karen O’s personal notebox, an embroidered iron-on patch, sticker, one photo card from Nick Zinner’s personal collection that all three members will sign and a custom champagne cork 8GB USB stick that includes over ninety minutes of video content as well as the twenty-nine audio tracks on the vinyl. To top it all off, all boxes will be wrapped in red fishnet stockings. The first 500 Deluxe Box buyers will receive a bonus cassette with 4 additional exclusive, unreleased demo bonus tracks with handwritten labels by the band.

The LP and Newsprint version contains the original album newly remastered by Stephen Marcussen on black 180g audiophile vinyl for the first time ever and five newspaper lyric posters with exclusive photos by Nick Zinner, Spike Jonze, Lance Bangs, Julian Gross, Patrick Daughters and Cintamani Calise.

The Jam 'In The City' 40th anniversary box set out 20 October 2017

the jam.jpg

Album release: 'In The City' by The Jam
Release date: 20 October 2017
Label: USM-Polydor
More info: Band website

In May 1977, a young 3-piece rock group from Woking in Surrey appeared on Top Of The Pops with an explosive single called In The City. The song fizzed with the energy and sense of purpose and is one of the most incendiary debut singles ever. At the same time, The Jam released their exhilarating debut album, also called 'In The City', and in the very same year it’s follow up 'This Is The Modern World'. To celebrate this 40th anniversary USM-Polydor release a five-disc box set featuring both albums re-mastered as well as unreleased demos and live recordings.

The Jam became one of the most popular bands to emerge from the English punk rock scene of ’77 and had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. In their short career, they achieved 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the UK (including 4 number 1s) and released 6 ground-breaking albums and went on to influence a generation with their music, style, politics and inspiration

Disc 1 - ‘In The City’ - Debut LP from May 1977 – A raw and powerful album that announced the arrival of The Jam, with their 18 year old lead singer Paul Weller sowing the seeds for what the was in store for the future. The Jam's music at this time owed a lot to the harmonies of Motown, the energy of  Dr Feelgood and early Who but with the anger of the current Punk scene. Although Weller's band was obviously headed in a different direction, this debut sits alongside the first albums by The Clash and the Sex Pistols as one of the definitive records from the era. The album includes hit single In The City (which gave the band their first Top Of The Pops appearance, included on the DVD), live favourite (and suggested single) Art School and Paul Weller’s most ambitious early song – Away From The Numbers.

Disc 2 – ‘Demos’ includes 11 demos made for the first album – 6 of which are previously unreleased.

Disc 3 – ‘This Is The Modern World’ the follow-up album, released a few months after debut in late 1977, with iconic Gered Mankowitz cover shot. This hastily released follow-up to In The City has long been the topic of debate among Jam fans. It might not be up there with later classics such as All Mod Cons & Sound Affects but time has been very kind to this album. It clearly paved the way for the refined brilliance of the later albums which possibly wouldn’t have happened without it.  Includes the rousing hit single The Modern World and some of Weller’s early introspective gems – Life From A Window and I Need You (For Someone), as well as The Combine, a track that pointed markedly towards the next album All Mod Cons.

Disc 4 – ‘Live’ includes the previously-unreleased concert from the ‘Nashville’ – September 10th 1977, featuring material from the first two albums. Also features the two legendary John Peel sessions from 1977.

Disc 5 – a DVD featuring TV appearances from the likes of Top Of The Pops and So It Goes plus promo videos from 1977. Includes performances of the hit single All Around The World (which did not appear on either LP)

Includes stunning 144-page book, featuring new liner notes, period photos and a wealth of cuttings, reviews and memorabilia from 1977.

Five LP-style CD wallets with printed inner bags – ‘In The City’ will feature the US version of the LP inner sleeve, also using a Martyn Goddard out-take photo. ‘This Is The Modern World’ will feature an alternative Gered Mankowitz cover image. Also includes five postcards. All housed in a ‘rigid, lift-off lid’ box.

Sex Pistols ‘Never Mind The Bollocks', anniversary edition out 27 October 2017

never mind the bollocks.jpg

Album release: ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’
Release date: 27 October 2017
Label: USM/UMC
More info: Band website

It is now almost 40 years to the day since the Sex Pistols ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’ was released and to mark this significant anniversary USM/UMC are proud to revisit the out-of-print super deluxe edition of the album, which was originally issued in 2012.

Released in limited numbers at the time, this set is widely considered to be the definitive collection. This new, budget priced smaller-sized edition still boasts 3CDs which include the original studio album with 1977 B-sides, a disc of outtakes and one disc of 1977 live material. Additionally there is a DVD featuring 1977 footage of the band playing live from the infamous boat party held on the River Thames, London, the Winter Gardens, Penzance in Cornwall and the Happy House, Stockholm, Sweden.

Bringing it all together is a 48-page hardback book with narrative from music journalist Pat Gilbert plus rare photos from Bob Gruen, Barry Plummer, John Tiberi and Dave Wainwright.

Condensing the very essence of 1977, 'Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols' is the only studio album by the group, released amidst a furore of controversy and outrage, following their being dropped by not one but two record labels, banned from gigging in most parts of the UK and swearing live on TV. From its iconic day-glo cover designed by Jamie Reid in collaboration with the Sex Pistols to its risqué title which led to an infamous court case which the band won, the album encapsulates a moment in time when the Sex Pistols set the world of music on fire.

John Lee Hooker 5 CD retrospective out 29 September 2017

John Lee Hooker.jpg

Album release: 'King Of The Boogie' by John Lee Hooker
Release date: 29 September 2017
Label: Concord Bicycle Music
More info: Artist website

Los Angeles, CA – Craft Recordings, the Catalogue division of Concord Bicycle Music, is proud to announce the release of 'King Of The Boogie', a career-spanning retrospective, honouring blues icon John Lee Hooker. Due out September 29th, the five-CD set delves deep into the catalogue of the influential artist, featuring not only his iconic hits, but also rarities, live recordings and several previously unreleased tracks. Housed in a 56-page book, the collection includes a wide selection of photos, taken throughout the musician’s life, plus new liner notes by writer and John Lee Hooker historian Jas Obrecht, as well as by the artist’s longtime manager and friend, Mike Kappus.

John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was born 100 years ago today, near Clarksdale, Mississippi to a sharecropping family. Throughout the years, there has been some academic debate about his original birth year. However, The Hooker family maintains 1917 as the de facto date. Says daughter Zakiya Hooker, “As we all know there was no great push for accuracy back then in that portion of the community. But we just stick to what my father told us, which was what he was told by his mother.”

As a young man, Hooker worked his way up north to Detroit to pursue his passion of music. By 1948, the artist had a hit on his hands with one of his earliest recordings, 'Boogie Chillun’'. From there, Hooker would record over 100 albums throughout the course of his six-decade-long career, building a diverse collection of fans along the way: from folk musicians and beatniks, to the stars of the British Invasion. The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana are among those who cite Hooker as a major influence. In his liner notes, Mike Kappus recalls that, “Everyone who knew John Lee Hooker loved him and felt privileged to be in his presence. While he influenced generations of musicians with his incomparable style, that impact on musicians stepped up to yet another level once they got to know and, universally, love him.”

In his later years, as the bluesman found himself in one of the busiest, most productive eras of his career, Hooker was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Blues Hall of Fame and Memphis Music Hall of Fame; was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and took home four GRAMMY® awards, plus a coveted Lifetime Achievement award in 2000.

Tasked with narrowing down Hooker’s vast catalogue into five CDs, box set producer Mason Williams curated the collection to narrate the artist’s story. “Even at 100 songs, this set is just a snapshot of John Lee Hooker’s incredible and influential career,” says Williams, “but one that takes you on the long journey he took from his early days in Detroit, to his time in Chicago recording for Vee-Jay Records and up through his later collaborations with Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt and Santana, among others.”

King Of The Boogie will be released as part of a year-long, multi-partner centennial celebration, honouring the music and influence of John Lee Hooker, and will be a companion piece to an exhibit of the same name, which kicks off today at the GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi.  John Lee Hooker: King Of The Boogie includes Hooker’s performance outfits, guitars, photos, awards and, of course, his music. The exhibit will be on display through February 2018, before travelling west to the GRAMMY Museum® at L.A. LIVE. Additional centennial partners include The Blues Foundation, The Delta Blues Museum, Living Blues, Oxford American, the John Lee Hooker Estate, and Epiphone Guitars, who are currently planning the release of a limited-edition John Lee Hooker Zephyr Outfit sometime in early 2018. John Lee’s daughter, Zakiya, has worked closely with all partners on her father’s centennial events, and affirms, “Today, on what would have been my father’s 100th birthday, I am so thrilled to see him celebrated—both with the exhibit, as well as with the announcement of this special collection of music. I know that his fans will be excited to hear rare performances, and to read the touching words of his longtime manager, Mike Kappus, as well as those of the wonderful Jas Obrecht. It was a pleasure to watch this box set come together, and I can’t wait to see it shared with the world.”

The Dream ‘Get Dreamy’ deluxe reissue 3 March 2017

Album release: ‘Get Dreamy’ by The Dream
Release date: 3 March 2017
Label: Round 2 Records

From the somewhat sparse, yet unique catalogue of adventurous, high-quality rock music coming out of Scandinavia in the late 60’s, the sole album ‘Get Dreamy’ by The Dream has been one of the most hunted treasures. Originally released in 1967, the album proves that the youth of Norway were just as happy swinging as their blighty cousins. It also marks the beginning of guitar legend Terje Rypdal’s journey from beat music and pop into new musical territories, which would ultimately lead him to become a key player in the European jazz world.

Any album that opens with a track (‘Green Things’) describing the heartbreak of aliens abducting your love, is clearly out of this world. But ‘Get Dreamy’ somehow fits there, and it doesn’t feel alarming when it takes you with it. Getting lost in the cosmos and making a great time out of it was the aim in ’67 and The Dream follow the tradition well. Having clear references to The Beach Boys (Driftin’), Floyd (‘Aint No Use) as well as some truly lust-filled riffs that sound like unreleased Hendrix tracks from a lost session, The Dream’s highly personal and almost fearless take on free rock and psychedelia was, actually, the first of its kind in Norway. With elements of jazz, glam horror (Hey Jimi), hazy sounding pop and the occasional whimsical Vaudeville-vibes so typical of 1967, it is a special slice of vinyl from the era.

Round 2 proudly presents this rarity and true Norwegian classic, remastered from the original tapes and with liner notes written by Rypdal afficionado and guitar ace, Reine Fiske (Dungen, The Amazing).

Sorority Noise album 'You're Not As _____ As You Think' due 17 March 2017

Album release: 'You're Not As _____ As You Think' by Sorority Noise
Release date: 17 March 2017
Label: Big Scary Monsters
More info: Band website

Sorority Noise have announced 'You're Not As _____ As You Think', their third full length record and follow up to 2015's Joy, Departed. 'You're Not As _____ As You Think' is set to be released on March 17th via Triple Crown Records. Sorority Noise recently released a teaser trailer for the new album that can be viewed here

Sorority Noise have also recently announced they will be touring the US this March with Modern Baseball, Kevin Devine and The Obsessives.

Sorority Noise write important songs. They go to uncomfortable places, unafraid to let the darkness in – but they’re also not shy at kicking back until the sorrow subsides. They’re songs of confusion, anger, life, death, mental health and, most importantly, hope. They’re what it means to be human.

That vulnerability has been Sorority Noise’s hallmark since they formed in 2013, but it’s never been as precise as it is on 'You're Not As _____ As You Think', their third album, set for release March 17th via Triple Crown Records. The album follows the Connecticut-based quartet’s It Kindly Stopped For Me 7” (2016), critically acclaimed Joy, Departed (2015) and debut Forgettable (2014) and is the most collaborative, fully realised version of Sorority Noise to date.

Sorority Noise recorded 'You’re Not As _____ As You Think' with producer Mike Sapone (Brand New, Taking Back Sunday) over the span of 10 days – three times longer than it took to track Joy, Departed – and this increased time allowed the band to hone the songwriting and visceral performances that have launched them onto tours with Modern Baseball, Citizen, Turnover and The Menzingers and into outlets like Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, The Fader, Spin, AV Club and Stereogum.

Singer/guitarist Cameron Boucher, who prefers not to edit or overthink his lyrics, empties both his pen and soul on songs like 'No Halo,' 'Disappeared' and 'A Portrait Of,' stark vignettes that find him coming to terms with the death of close friends.

Omar Rahbany album 'Passport' due 10 March 2017

Album release: 'Passport' by Omar Rahbany
Release date: 10 March 2017
More info: Artist website

An album that took three years to make, with over 180 collaborators from 12 different nationalities, of which include Grammy award winners and critically acclaimed artists, ‘Passport’, by Omar Rahbany, unfolds over 59 minutes. The forthcoming album, ‘Passport’, breaks down barriers between cultures and countries, having travelled across world to complete it. Heavy jazz and classical influences are fused with Arabic and Lebanese overtones throughout the album, meeting in a place where there are no divisions, culturally, linguistically or artistically.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1989, Omar comes from a rich musical lineage. His grandfather, Mansour, and great-uncle, Assi, known colloquially as the Rahbani Brothers, forged Lebanon’s musical identity with their distinct and innovative pieces. Similarly, Omar’s childhood was infused with a rich variety of artistic mediums; his father is a playwright composer and lyricist whilst his mother is famed for her professional dancing.

Omar’s debut album sees him carrying his heredity forwards, whilst innovating and developing his sound. With a deep interest for the German concept of ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ (a total work of art) - an idea that only stimulated his burgeoning creativity - his interests widened to include film and choreography. Omar’s vision of uniting these various aesthetic elements to form one total work of art soon became more pronounced, leading him to compose his first musical at the age of nineteen.

In many ways ‘Passport’ takes forward the idea of ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, the record is a genre all of its own. Omar makes use of the wide variety of the musical tools at his disposal, setting the album apart as an entirely unique body of work. The songs are complex, deeply textured and cinematic, they are as infectious and as diverse as they are accomplished.

Speaking about the album, Omar says, “After a three year journey to perfect every note on Passport, and to achieve the overarching vision of the album, we are now ready to share it with the world. The successfully enriched sounds of Passport are attributed to the 180 talented individuals that took part in making it, all unified by one vision.”

The socio-political situation in the Middle East has also been a big influence on the new album. Most of the world’s ruling civilisations, at one time or another, have left their mark on the city of Beirut. This fact, combined with the effects of globalisation and the internet, has created a city, and indeed a country, which is torn between three languages, eighteen religions and one history that no one can seem to agree upon. This is a nation that undertakes a constant struggle to find its ‘absolute’ identity.

Understanding his own position within this debate has become a personal mission for Omar. Speaking about the impact this has had on the new album he says, “The melting pot of cultures I grew up in, the double-edged sword that shaped me as a person, the confusion, the creativity, the struggle itself is my identity. I am a citizen of planet Earth and my nationality is that of a human being. This is my PASSPORT. And I’m certain that this view is shared by everyone that contributed to the making of the album.”

Mixed at Real World Studios (Manic Street Preachers, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Beyoncé Knowles, Ludovico Einaudi and more), and with every single part of the album written and composed by Omar himself, the album features over 180 guest musicians. Guests on the album include fourteen-time Grammy Award winning producer Steve Rodby (bassist for the Pat Metheny Group), Keith Carlock (drummer for Sting and Steely Dan), Wayne Krantz, Karim Ziad, and Cuong Vu (trumpeter for the Pat Metheny Group), along with accompaniment from the Kiev City Symphonic Orchestra.

The completion of such an ambitious project is owed to Omar’s distinct, original sound and technical proficiency. In many ways this album is an artistic passport, a tool in which the listener can travel freely across a multifarious range of styles, genres and experiences and can submerge themselves in the unknown.

Field Mouse new album 'Episodic' due 5 August 2016

Album release: 'Episodic' by Field Mouse
Release date: 5 August 2016
Label: Topshelf Records
More info: Band website

If 2014's 'Hold Still Life' was the fruition of Field Mouse's evolution from a fiery two-piece in to a fully-fledged band, then new album 'Episodic' is the letting go; the abandonment of past persuasions for something altogether more untamed. Where the band's initial work was self-recorded, by founding members Rachel Browne and Andrew Futral, the new record signifies the first time that the quintet has composed an album together from start-to-finish - and the result is a record that feels altogether more defined.

Recorded in Philadelphia with Hop Along's Joe Reinhart, and written through a twelve month period which delivered sudden family illness and a deteriorating relationship, Episodic is fashioned from ten feverish bouts of guitar-pop; led by Browne's fearsome and fearless vocal and informed by an instrumental backing that underpins the entire record with a vibrant concoction of guitar, drums and keys.

Showcasing the band's ability to switch between mood and tone, the record shifts from the spiky immediacy of tracks such as Accessory and A Widow With A Terrible Secret, to the more spacious moments, such as monumental centre-piece Beacon, without ever losing sight of the scuzzy, melodic pop songs that remain Field Mouse's distinct forte.

Featuring guest turns from Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), Allison Crutchfield (Swearin'/Waxahatchee) and Joseph D'Agostino (Cymbals Eat Guitars),

'Episodic' is the sound of a fully-realized band truly coming in to their own; honest, direct and immensely powerful.

Field Mouse is Rachel Browne (vocals/guitar), Andrew Futral (guitar), Saysha Heinzman (bass), Tim McCoy (drums), Zoë Browne (synth/rhodes/vocals).

Press reaction to date

"With a vintage sound boasting raw post-punk, finely juxtaposed with Rachel Browne's delicate vocals, Field Mouse manage assured nods at the likes of The Cure and Elastica" - NME

"Field Mouse make a tougher and shoegazier racket than the fey-pop of their similarly-named forebears. They also, on Two Ships, nod to ‘90s indie-dance, which will appeal to those who dream of Sarah Cracknell of St Etienne cooing wistfully with Republic-era New Order." –The Guardian

"[Field Mouse] shimmer like Velocity Girl used to do back in the early ’90s..." - Stereogum

Left With Pictures new album 'Afterlife' due 29 April 2016

Album release: 'Afterlife' by Left With Pictures
Release date: 29 April 2016
Label: Organ Grinder Records
More info: Band website

Left With Pictures are an orchestral pop ensemble from London. Formed in 2005, they started with three hard-up, classically trained musicians who forsook the orchestra pit for the sanctuary of their keyboard player’s loft. Armed with synths, guitars, strings, kazoos, found-sounds and a shoestring budget, they began with a series of self-releases and impromptu performances in theatres, bars and bedrooms.

In 2008 LWP signed to Organ Grinder Records – with whom they have released two albums, Beyond Our Means (2009) and 2011’s In Time,an album consisting of 12 songs which were released monthly and premiered by Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music. Over 10 years the band has won critical praise, expanded their live sound, and steadily refined their craft of inventive pop music, where the acoustic and the electronic are intricately combined. Afterlife – their first release in five years – is the result of a band evolving, and pulling apart their sound in order to explore their own innate creativity, much of which can be attributed to the appointment of Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Ghostpoet, Darkstar, Hood) as producer.

Formby acted as a sounding board and as a voice to challenge any comfort zones the band may slip back into after 10 years together, as Tom Walker explains: "Richard’s job as producer was often to gently unpick what we’d done and refocus it. He encouraged us to change arrangements in the studio – often stripping parts away and leaving a broader, more cinematic sound. Richard is a master of vintage equipment – modular synths, old organs, tape delays, etc. – and he always had ideas about which sounds to use and how to distort, bend and re-imagine the music we made."

In many ways it’s the sound of a band reborn, which is fitting when considering their subject matter. Much of what appears on Afterlife very frankly concerns endings, death and renewal – themes which evolved over the course of the writing and recording process. Bloody Mess doesn’t mince its words with the line “I don’t know what my body will to do me today / I’m scared to go to sleep tonight.” Before the album’s lead track Terra Firma (a song very plainly about dying) climaxes in a kind of folktronic, symphonic soup, bolstered by gently swelling strings, ghostly church-pew background vocals and a gorgeous looped synth motif, all preceded by the contemplative lyric “It’s easy to go on without a life you know nothing about, when you spend your days at the water’s edge.”

Indeed, from the lonely nostalgic hum of Last Man On Earth (“Should I hang my St Christopher over the dash? / and find my way back”), through Long Lane’s Elliott Smith ode, to the chilling album closer The Night Watch (“all who love you will be here”), Afterlife is a much more lived-in, otherworldly, and more cohesive body of work that anything the band have done before.

Left With Pictures are Tom Walker, Stuart Barter and Toby Knowles. They are joined live by Alex Gold on percussion and Mike Cranny on bass.

Press reaction to date

'Absolutely beautiful' - Lauren Laverne, BBC 6 Music

'Beyond brilliant...the most heartwarming album of the year.' - Drowned in Sound

'Totally beguiling on every level.' - The Line of Best Fit

Gunship to re-release self-titled album on cassette with Commodore 64 game

Cassette / game release: Gunship
Release date: 9 December 2015
More info: Band website

GUNSHIP is a neon soaked, late night, sonic getaway drive, dripping with luscious analogue synthesizers, cinematic vocals and cyberpunk values, exploding from the front cover of a dusty plastic VHS case which has lain forgotten since 1984. Created by Dan Haigh, Alex Westaway and Alex Gingell, GUNSHIP is an evolution of the of the recently popularised synthwave genre, which was originally started by Rosso Corsa records & The Valerie Collective artists.

Today GUNSHIP return with another world first, salvaging yet another relic from the retro gaming hall of fame. The band are re-releasing their critically acclaimed self-titled album on cassette. On side-a the golden cassette features GUNSHIP’s self-titled album and on side-b, Jeff Minter’s classic Commodore 64 game ‘Attack Of The Mutant Camels’. Not only is this the first cassette album release to feature a built in C64 game, but this version of the album will also be the only version of the album to feature the April Towers remix of ‘The Mountain’, which was premiered with Earmilk earlier this year.

Speaking on the new release GUNSHIP said, 'The games for the early video game systems like the Commodore Vic 20, C64, Atari 2600 and latterly the Amiga 500 were huge influences on our imaginations growing up. At that me game development felt like a genuine free for all where unrestricted creativity flourished and imagination was unchecked by the yet to arrive influence of big business and its risk-averse practices. We love this era for its simplistic charm and raw creativity and certainly try to take these influences and values and implement them in GUNSHIP’s music.

We worked with Jed Shepherd at Post/Pop records to cook up a version of our album on gold cassette tape, with our music on side A and a Commodore 64 game on side B to hopefully bring some attention back to this fantastic era in game design. It’s an honour to share a cassette tape with Jeff Minter! The man is a icon in the classic gaming world. His games, including ‘Attack of the Mutant Camels’ and ‘Llamatron’, were cornerstones of our childhood and those influences certainly live on in GUNSHIP’s approach to writing music today.'

GUNSHIP’s debut album has previously received acclaim from the likes of IGN, Nerdist, Bloody Disgusting, WIRED, Metal Sucks, Yahoo, Games Radar, Rockstar, Kotaku, FACT Mag, Digital Spy, Shortlist, Zoo, Kerrang, Big Cheese, Evening Standard, Electronic Sound VICE and many more. The cassette is due for release on 9th December 2015, and can be pre-ordered HERE

Gunship Commodore 64 Competition

It’s time to put your retro gaming chops to the test! To accompany the bands cassette release, in true GUNSHIP style the band have also launched a competition to win a one-off, custom neon pink Commodore 64 to play their new cassette/cartridge release.

The competition is open now and the challenge is simple, visit this online emulator HERE, and attack your keyboard in an effort to reach the highest score possible in ‘Llamatron!

GUNSHIP is more of a story than a soundtrack, written large across an eighties action cinema screen, where the narrative interweaves romance, hope, fear, technology, the threat of nuclear obliteration, and ultimately the need to celebrate life. Both bleak and dystopian at times but also progressive, uplifting and danceable.

GUNSHIP’s sound is created with vintage analogue synthesizers and other retro electronic gear available in the 1980s. The music is driven by retro gear, inspired by nostalgia for a bygone era but they use this approach to yield something fresh and new. The debut album is sonically diverse - blending sweeping fluorescent synth lines with fever pitched and adrenalizing electric bass arpeggios. This musical foundation, sometimes dark and brooding, sometimes romantic, underpins emotive and cinematic vocals.

The album also features guest vocals by Lou Hayter (New Young Pony Club), Martin Grech, and Stella Le Page. Upcoming remixes include Miami Nights 1984, Make Up And Vanity Set, April Towers and Carpenter Brut.

Buy the 16-bit boxed set now:
The GUNSHIP debut album is now available for purchase on iTunes. The album contains 13 tracks - 10 GUNSHIP originals and 3 remixes from leading synthwave artists: Carpenter Brut, Miami Nights 1984 and Makeup and Vanity Set. Purchase the album here

Tina Refsnes debut album out 6 November

Album release: ‘No One Knows That You’re Lost’ by Tina Refsnes
Release date: 6 November 2015
Label: Vestkyst Records.
More info: Artist website

Hailing from the Norwegian capital of Oslo, Tina Refsnes is a singer-songwriter currently concocting a potent mix of English new-folk and poignant acoustic Americana. Growing up in the small seaside town of Floro, there was an abundance of rain where one could taste the salt from the sea spray up to a mile from the coastline. Growing up, she always longed for the noise and life of a larger city. Despite this her love for the open seascape and mountainous terrain followed her into her songwriting, where she displays elements of Neil Young, Laura Marling and Sufjan Stevens.

She moved to Liverpool and studied and lived there for four years. She loved the sprawling metropolis of urban possibilities, and spent all her time writing songs and playing music. But through her years there, there was always a sensation of not finding the right expression for her writing, so she learned to take her time, saving up her songs so that one day she would be able to do it her way.

Tina had always been fascinated with space in a recording. Her favourite listening experiences were always when you could hear also the person behind the performance - breaths, creaks in floor boards, an out of place thud from strumming your guitar slightly wrong. She wanted the listener to get a physical sense of the distance between him/her and where the performer was situated within the room.

It wasn't till years later, when Tina had moved back to Oslo, Norway that she found what she had been looking for. She heard an album recorded by producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas, The Weather Station) which inspired her to take her songs and travel to Toronto, Canada to find him. Lackritz teamed her and long-time collaborater Eirik Stordrange up with Toronto musicians Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith) and Mike O’Brien (Zeus) and over the course of three weeks, the four of them played together in a single room to form the album.

There is certainly no rush with Tina. 'No One Knows That You’re Lost' is a collection of songs written over a stretch of time - saved up and finally captured here in just the right way. They are songs about small things. Sometimes serious, sometimes observing the world with humour and sometimes from a skewed angle. Songs like ‘Told’ and ‘Upside Down Clouds’ explore growing and learning new things as you get older. ‘Alaska’ longs for the familiar quietness of nature that she grew up with and ‘City City’ and ‘The Heart Wants Its Way’ is an ode to her love of the big city.

Small Faces albums release on 180g vinyl on 22nd June

Album release: Small Faces and In The Beginning
Release date: 22 June 2015
Label: Universal Music
More info: www.thesmallfaces.com

Between spring 1965, when they began rehearsing at the Ruskin Arms in East London's Manor Park, and June 1967, with their farewell Decca release, The Small Faces were emblematic of a fast-moving youth culture. Mod-ish street style peacocks and R&B/soul obsessives to a man, they were young, hip and hyper.

Their self-titled debut album, released in May 1966, includes the hit singles Whatcha Gonna Do About It and Sha-La-La-La-Lee and was well received by music critics and fans alike, rising to number three on the UK album chart and remaining at the top for several weeks.

It represented a three-pronged alliance between the band’s concert set, a couple of Tin Pan Alley-style ’gifts’ bestowed upon them and a clutch of surprisingly assured originals.

Hot under the collar and hastily executed, Small Faces had pop, soul an (rare for a beat combo) very little in the way of 12-bar rock ‘n’ roll. Above all the record caught the flavour of those changing times.

From the Beginning was the (unofficial) retrospective album released in June 1967. It reached number 17 in the UK Album Chart. It is somewhat notorious for being a record put together by the band’s former manager Don Arden after his charges had dispensed with his services and signed with Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate label. It’s a mix of A-sides, first album outtakes and works-in-progress for a second LP and contains an inventive cover of Del Shannon's classic Runaway as well their biggest hit, All or Nothing.

The latter was the highlight of the Small Faces live set, the centrepiece of From The Beginning and, reckoned Steve Marriott, one of two key Swinging London anthems (the other, he said, was The Who’s My Generation). Built on chord changes that would have been second nature to the Stax house band, the song brought Memphis to Pimlico and summoned a career-best performance from Marriott. It had power, soul and in September 1966 it shared the Number One spot with The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine.
