New single, 'Dorothy', from Syd Arthur

Single release: Dorothy by Syd Arthur
Release date: November 12 2012
Label: Dawn Chorus Recording Company
Listen: Tracks available on Syd Arthur official site

Praise for debut album On An On (July 2012):

'Dorothy begins with a calmative wash of heat-have guitars, then cedes to a lazy, joined at the hip groove that's a small marvel of poise and subtlety.... Enchanting' - Mojo

‘Dizzyingly intricate… they bristle with energy and ideas’ - Q

‘Strong compositional ideas… a careering piece’ - Uncut

‘Absurdly talented’ - Word

‘Syd Arthur are sons and heirs of those Canterbury musicians who did sometimes whimsical, sometimes intense things with psychedelic and progressive rock’ -The Guardian

Syd Arthur, a quartet of Canterbury-based devotees of sound immersed in the simple pleasures of songwriting, performance and exploratory musical interplay, will release forthcoming single Dorothy on November 12; their first release since summer 2012’s critically acclaimed debut album, On An On

Greatly inspired by the sonic pioneers of the late 60s and early 70s, they have patiently learned how to engineer, produce and mix themselves, using an innovative hybrid of analogue and digital techniques. Naturally, in 2009, Wicker Studios, their own studio space was created, followed by their record label, Dawn Chorus Recording Company. Syd Arthur may revel in the music of decades long past but, as psychedelic rock goes, they match the hallucinogenic sounds of modern contemporaries like Wolf People, Black Mountain, Tame Impala, even Making Dens era Mystery Jets - with imaginative, whimsically sweet, melodies.

After the huge critical success of their debut album, On An On, Dorothy finds the band in a suitably whimsical state, the instruments and textures are given a chance to shine with swirling keys taking an integral role. Lyrically, the poetry, honesty and mystique of Liam Magill’s vocals are at the forefront, as he muses on life.

Syd Arthur’s intricate, high-energy live sets, which to date include Glastonbury and Secret Garden slots, have resulted in a large following – one that is also burgeoning in Europe as they continue to pick up tours in France, Belgium, The Netherlands and most recently Italy. This is an accomplished live band. Dorothy looks set to further cement Syd Arthur as a band to watch heading into 2013.

Honningbarna announce UK and Ireland live dates

Tour info: Honningbarna - UK and Ireland tour

Honningbarna are a group of teenage punks from Norway; their name translates to "The Honeychildren", and they have been kicking up a big fuss in their own country, having already won the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy this year and being nominated for Best Newcomer. They’re an energetic, uncompromising and driven live presence, with a lead singer who also plays, unconventionally, a cello.

Following legendary shows at Iceland Airwaves, by:Larm and Roskilde, and a quote from Clash calling them the "most exciting band in Norway", they're heading over to the UK and Ireland for just a handful of shows in April.

Musically a potent mix of political lyrics against apathy and melodic aggression, they have already overcome tragedy in the last year, losing their original drummer in a car crash and only continuing as a band with the support of their families and a wish from his own. They're currently distributing new demos direct to fans, who are then encouraged to share with everyone they can.

Musically, they make hardcore punk with shards of lo-fi, post-punk and melody. In places it's like you're listening to a much skinnier, much younger F*cked Up. There's a few similarirties to Ice Age and Kverlertak in there too, inevitably with the latter also choosing to sing in their native language, and there is no shortage of riffs.

2012 live dates in UK / Ireland

  • 10th April at Whelan's in Dublin
  • 11th April at The Shackwell Arms, London
  • 12th April at Wide Days, Edinburgh

New live dates from The Undertones

Following the heavy demand for tickets for their April 2011 shows, seminal Derry band The Undertones are continuing to celebrate their 35th Anniversary by scheduling more live dates for December 2011. As during the April shows, they will play their debut album, The Undertones, in its entirety and are appealing for members of their original fan club to get in touch.

It’s been a long road from their first show in February 1976 at St Mary’s Scout Hall in Derry, but 2011 has seen resurgence in interest in the band with shows in the UK, Europe and America.

As in April, the band are keen to reacquaint themselves with members of their former fan club, the ‘Rocking Humdingers Club’, and have put out a Missing Persons Search. Mickey Bradley of the band says: ‘‘We recently came across the original membership book from 1982 containing the names of the Rocking Humdingers and thought it would be good to see them again. The response in April was great and as some members could not make the shows then, we hope they will be able to this time.”

The band hope to hear from these long-time fans and have promised the first 50 who get in touch free entry into a show of their choice, a copy of The Very Best Of The Undertones and a tour t-shirt. Those interested should contact the band via at: (this offer is not open to those who did come in April.)

In addition to the extra live dates, the band are releasing their most recent two CDs - 2003's “Get What You Need” and 2007's “Dig Yourself Deep” - digitally in December 2011.
