Live in Concert

As Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers prepare for their live shows at the Royal Albert Hall on June 18and June 20, Universal Music marks the occasion with the first UK DVD and Blu-ray release of the classic Live in Concert show.

Recorded for a two-part PBS Soundstage, this is a fascinating and exciting show, where the extensive covers are just as interesting as the hits. Petty pays tribute to both Elvis and Ray Charles with a King-like romp through I Got A Woman. He also satisfies his J.J. Cale fixation with reworkings of Thirteen Days. The band settles in and plays rarities and personal favourites that have never before been officially recorded as 11 high-definition cameras catch all the action from every angle.

"Electropop as honey-sweet as you'll hear" - The Guardian

"Highly efficient electro-pop, potently infected with acoustic/electronica and a melodic sensibility that takes some beating" - Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times

"One to watch" - Press Association

Single: Lettie, Lucky/Sanctuary (Double A-Side)
Release date: 25 June 2012
Label: Outerworld
Listen: http://www.lettiemusic.com/film

On 25 June acclaimed singer-songwriter Lettie releases a double A-Side single, Lucky / Sanctuary. Featuring two very different yet complementary tracks, the single is taken from her current album Good Fortune, Bad Weather, a record that is racking up some serious attention. Music Week have made it one of their ‘key releases’; The Guardian have described her tracks as ‘electropop as honey-sweet as you’ll hear’; The Irish Times has given the album a four star review, and the Press Association think she is definitely ‘one to watch’. With huge coverage online and lots more expected from key publications over the next few weeks, there is a real sense of momentum building around this artist.

Lettie’s music is a quirky mix of electronica and acoustica, but above all, she has, as The Irish Times reviews editor Tony Clayton Lea puts it, “a melodic sensibility that takes some beating”. These two tracks showcase her incredible songwriting talent, and you can watch videos for both at http://www.lettiemusic.com/film

Box set: Motorhead: The Classic Album Selection
Label: Universal Music
Release date: 11 June 2012

Forming the band after his unceremonious sacking from Hawkwind following an unfortunate narcotics misunderstanding at the Canadian border, then naming them after the very last song he wrote and recorded with the space cadets, Motörhead mainman and force of nature, Ian Fraser Kilmister, or Lemmy to the world, gunned the accelerator and wheel spun his very own ‘silver machine’ into the fast lane of the UK singles and album chart, leaving on-lookers spitting dust from gritted snaggleteeth!

Through varying line-up changes and more ups and downs than a spin on the Whacky Goldmine, Motörhead have released some of the most influential heavy metal rock 'n' roll known to any sub-human, and in doing so, have been widely regarded as spawning the illegitimate genre that became known as ‘speed metal’.

Now six of the band’s best albums are being released all in one box. They are original masters, housed in gate-fold replica wallets with original artwork - a perfect introduction to one of the greatest Metal bands in the world.

Albums included

1. Overkill
2. Bomber
3. Ace of Spades
4. No Sleep Till Hammersmith
5. Iron Fist
6. Another Perfect Day

Single release: Stuttering Song II by Mike Tyler
Release date: June 11
Label: Code 7
Listen: erectionerection.com

Mike Tyler is a celebrated non-academic, post-beat poet and musician in the American tradition. His new single Stuttering Song II is the first to be released in the UK. The track, taken from his forthcoming sophomore album Erection (out August 20th) instantly portrays his inimitably quirky magnetism. Repetitive catchy chords provide the backdrop for his poetically-devised (naturally) and hilariously undemanding lyrics. The single also features a B-side called, well, B-Side. Arranged with drifting acoustic guitar, softly thudded drums and handclaps it’s very much melodiously devised, demonstrating that his poetic skill is equally matched by his musicianship.

All of Mike’s tracks are produced by BL’EVE – an artist more accustomed to the urban scene with a scope of production ranging from artists like Wyclef Jean to Maino. It was their different backgrounds and different musical tastes, but incredible feeling of shared understanding that makes their collaboration so exciting.

Mike comes from the New York City tradition of Lou Reed, mentored in a bar by the American poet Delmore Schwartz (who wanted poets to be as famous as baseball players), Patti Smith (a poet first) and Tom Verlaine of Television.

Stand out moments from Mike Tyler’s career were catalysed by his way with words. Banksy stencilled his words “only the ridiculous survive” outside of London’s Paddington Station, while Beck fell under his charismatic spell while honing his song writing craft. He became known as The Most Dangerous Poet in America after breaking his arm during a reading, and his poem The Most Beautiful Word in the American Language is on people’s Facebook walls, MySpace pages, and blogs, not to mention fridge doors.

Limited edition superpaks including an imported 7" record, CD and stencil will be available from erectionerection.com

Compilation: Great Expectations - The Football Album
Release date: 14 May 2012
Label: Spectrum Audio / Universal Music

This summer, football fans across the country come together for one of the world’s biggest tournaments – Euro 2012, held this year in Poland and Ukraine. Captured here on CD courtesy of Spectrum Audio and Universal Music is a thorough collection of world football’s most recognizable theme tunes, flag waving classics and terrace anthems. This collection of fan favourites is the soundtrack to the highs, the lows and all the singing in between.

Included on this collection are five Top 10 tracks, including two Number 1s. Below is the track listing with “commentary”.

1. Match of The Day Theme - Sacre
Over the years there may have been many version recorded but football TV coverage is simply incomplete without this.

2. Football, Football – Edmundo Ros
This Latin homage to the beautiful game regularly features in TV coverage and is guaranteed to raise spirits.

3. Mas Que Nada – Sergio Mendes
Another Latin classic and football TV favourite this is the aural equivalent of some exquisite Pele dribbling. Pure class and recorded in the golden year of ’66.

4. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da – The England World Cup Squad
This England World Cup Squad serve up a truly unique version of this Ska influenced Beatles classic.

5. Que Sera Sera – Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band
England supporters know only too well, whatever will be, will be and Dexy’s Midnight Runners favourite Geno knew this too in ’66 when he recorded it.

6. Sportnight Theme – Tony Hatch
Mr Hatch should have been knighted for his services to TV themes in the 60s and 70s. This one from 1974 is one of his many sporting classics.

7. Keep on Running – The Spencer Davis Group
This UK No.1 hit from 1965 has provided the sound bed for more training footage TV features at both club and country level than anyone can remember and one spin explains why.

8. On The Ball Theme – John Schroeder Orchestra
Another classic football TV theme tune, this time from ITV’s Saturday’s lunchtime spot way back (and briefly revisited by Gabby Logan).

9. Jerusalem
This piece needs no introduction but this recent version is class, boasting both the Royal Choral Society and BBC Concert Orchestra.

10. Rule Britannia
Flags out as Della Jones and the BBC Concert Orchestra raise the stakes.

11. Land Of Hope & Glory
Seeing as we’re already standing and waving flags we might as well continue.

12. If the Kids Are United – Sham 69
This muscular summer top 10 hit from 1978 was immediately adopted for terrace chants the next season and it’s easy to hear why.

13. Saturdays Kids – The Jam
The Jam were popular with football fans and this cut, reminiscent of the times features a first verse that includes the line ‘…drink lots of beer and wait for half time results’. Perfect.

14. Lily the Pink – The England World Cup Squad
Talking of beer, this UK No.1 for The Scaffold and subsequent good-humoured terrace favourite gets ‘the team’s’ unique vocal treatment. It’s hard not to sing along.

16. Nessum Dorma – Luciano Pavarotti
It’s hard to imagine a time when this classic won’t be associated with the World Cup yet it wasn’t always so, recorded as it was way back in 1973.

17. The Dambusters March
Time to reach for the flag again; we’re on the march to the top.

Directed by Argentinean Roberto Llauro, the video uses the striking image of The Domino Sugar Factory as its centre piece – the same image gracing the cover of the band's anticipated debut UK album release Best Behavior. Doused in electrifying hues and back dropped by swirls of galaxy, the track offers welcome reminiscence of our own baggy scene, sparked by the likes of The Stones Roses, as well as to the band’s interests in krautrock, house music, post-punk and psychedelic rock.

“Otherworldly and wonderful. Alternating between French and English, singer Fionnuala Dorrity sings the songs as Brel did - coquettish during ‘Madeleine’, passionate in ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’ and tortured in ‘Au Suivant’. Highlight of the set though was the concluding ‘Le Moribond’, a rousing and upbeat version which will cast out memories of Terry Jacks and Westlife forever.” - The Word

“Dead Belgian blew us away with a stunning performance of power, beauty and finesse” - For Folk’s Sake

Dead Belgian are a Liverpool-based band playing the music of Jacques Brel. They began life in 2007, inspired to share Brel’s music with all who would listen. Each member brought their own influences to the band, from European folk to progressive rock, stripping the songs to their bare bones and fattening them up again using a ramshackle drum kit, ukulele, guitar, accordion, saxophone, mandolin, clarinet and flute. Dead Belgian have developed a playful and inventive sound that meshes dense melodic patterns, demonic waves of intensity and passages of sparse frailty with vocals that have drawn comparison to Edith Piaf, Anthony Hegarty and Nico.

It is a sound unique to themselves while still capturing the beauty, passion and humour of the original work, a rousing and rowdy back-porch reinvention of Jacques Brel’s honest and poetic stories.

Andy Delamere - percussion, vocals
Fionnuala Dorrity - vocals, guitar, ukulele
Simon James - saxophone, flute, clarinet, mandolin, vocals
Matthew Wood - accordion, vocals

Russian punks Biting Elbows announce their debut UK album release, a self-titled collection of 12 killer, dark, affected punk tracks. Recorded in the darkest recesses of Moscow city, the album was put together in a total of 5 studios, the band being moved on from one venue to the next. A Molotov Cocktail of influences, Biting Elbows draw from the likes of Rancid, The Misfits, The Clash, Sublime and Violent Femmes to reach a punk sound of devastating punch and power.

Opening track and forthcoming single Toothpick gets the record off to a moody start, (calling to mind bands like Rancid at their most bitter and twisted) it’s the story of the sorts of revenge fantasies that follow the end of a relationship. The video for the single was conceived and directed by vocalist / rhythm guitarist Ilya Naishuller and is viewable here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR9pt73L_JU.

An album doused in youthful anger, and fuelled by an inability to accept global injustices, Biting Elbows thematically packs a punch. Rabid Red contemplates police violence; Dustbus, untrustworthy government scheming. Conversely, album closer One Night In ’99 boasts about the closeness in the punk rock community and the great influence that music can have. Naishuller sings ‘I crawl up three flights of stairs like half a zombie… tell me the name of that ridiculously awesome band’.
